Travelling seemed like falsehood to me. I grew tired of backpackers expressing too much praise about how petting a baby elephant in Thailand “transformed” them. Globe-traveling to me held no more promise than finding a few bills in the pocket of an old coat. I needed something deeper than an Eat, Play, Love moment.
One day, Vasilis, my Greek best friend, reminded me of our decade-old promise: after our final exams, I would visit his hometown in Athens. Maybe, it was time to make good on that promise.
I finally boarded the plane. Vasilis picked me up at the airport. I smiled, thinking how improbable this moment seemed all those years ago.
The decade-long wait proved to be well worth it. Every step through the ancient streets revealed new wonders. However, none of them truly mattered. What would forever alter my perception of travel was a chance encounter with a local.
Vasilis and I were wandering Athens when a special sound caught our attention — a rhythmic clinking disturbing the quietness of the residential street. Curiously, we followed the sound to a humble workshop. Inside, a welder (焊工) gave no mind to our presence behind him. He wore no flashy protective suit — this was just another day for him, another dance with fire and metal that had become second nature. Under the sunshade, his orange cat rested in the comforting warmth...
As the man continued welding, I felt a bit of envy. I envied his peace and contentment. I admired the simplicity he embodied. I imagined the welder happy, finding fulfillment in his craft (手艺) and returning to his loving family...The moment moved me to tears. Leaving the workshop, rain blending with tears, I realized how easily life’s poetry could pass unnoticed.
Home again in Montreal, I stop simply pursuing better things, better experiences and better people that are never grasped. I realize the real journey is inward — to appreciate life’s ordinary magic. That sure beats petting any baby elephant. I may not have returned home “transformed,” but I’ll always think of the welder and his cat.
4. Which aspect of travelling makes the author feel uneasy?
A. Shortage of adequate funds. B. Discomfort in dietary habits.
C. Overstatement of travel’s effects. D. Danger of petting baby animals.
5. What drove the author to go to Athens?
A. Meeting a commitment. B. Exploring a unique landscape.
C. Receiving further education. D. Escaping from the current life.
6. What does the underlined word “poetry” in paragraph 6 probably refer to?
A. Poems written by masters. B. Peace and simplicity.
C. Spirit of craftsmanship. D. Special sound in the street.
7. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Friendship Lasts Forever B. Travelling Shapes a Better Self
C. Pursuit of Happiness Never Stops D. The Ordinary Makes Extraordinary
C 5. A 6. B 7. D
由文章第一段中“Travelling seemed like falsehood to me. I grew tired of backpackers expressing too much praise about how petting a baby elephant in Thailand “transformed” them.(对我来说,旅行似乎是骗人的。我已经厌倦了背包客们对在泰国抚摸小象如何“改变”了他们的赞不绝口。)”可知,旅行影响的过度陈述让作者感到不安,觉得是骗人的。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第二段中“One day, Vasilis, my Greek best friend, reminded me of our decade-old promise: after our final exams, I would visit his hometown in Athens. Maybe, it was time to make good on that promise.(有一天,我最好的希腊朋友瓦西里斯让我想起了我们十年前的约定:期末考试结束后,我要去他的家乡雅典。也许,是时候兑现这个承诺了。)”可知,为了兑现履行承诺,作者去了雅典。故选A。
由文章倒数第二段“As the man continued welding, I felt a bit of envy. I envied his peace and contentment. I admired the simplicity he embodied. I imagined the welder happy, finding fulfillment in his craft (手艺) and returning to his loving family...The moment moved me to tears. Leaving the workshop, rain blending with tears, I realized how easily life’s poetry could pass unnoticed.(当那个人继续焊接时,我感到有点嫉妒。
通读全文,尤其是由文章最后一段“Home again in Montreal, I stop simply pursuing better things, better experiences and better people that are never grasped. I realize the real journey is inward — to appreciate life’s ordinary magic. That sure beats petting any baby elephant. I may not have returned home “transformed,” but I’ll always think of the welder and his cat.(回到蒙特利尔的家,我不再简单地追求更好的事物、更好的经历和更好的人,而这些都是永远无法抓住的。
C
Teenagers across the world eagerly await the day they become legal adults, to be free from the dependence of their parents and to practice the full rights of their citizenship. The situation is no different in South Korea. Here, the legal age of adulthood is 19. Ten years ago, the legal age was 20, but this was lowered by a year in 2013 based on recognition of the early maturity of modern teenagers. Now, from their 19th birthday onwards, South Korean teenagers can vote, get married and work full-time.
Unlike most other countries, the South Korean government celebrates this transformation into adulthood with an official “Coming-of-Age Day”, which falls on every third Monday of May. Its first written record of celebrating adulthood dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty, where King Gwangjong gifted Prince Wang Juan outfit (服装) reserved for male adults in 965.
By the late Joseon Dynasty, the ceremony marking adulthood developed into a full-grown event for the middle and upper classes, celebrated by their 15-year-olds. In this period, one of the most symbolic changes that adults-to-be went through was that boys would tie their long flowing (飘逸的) hair into a topknot (结) and cover it with at all black hat made of horsehair; likewise, girls put their hair, which they let fall as single braids (辫子) in youth, up into a knot and set it with a long hairpin (发簪).
Today, the traditional coming-of-age ceremonies still live on, supported largely by government and public interests. But a set of very different customs has also been added. Unless they apply to participate in publicly-held ceremonies or attend schools that provide these series, 19-year-olds celebrate the third Monday of May the modern way, by having a nice meal with family or drinking with their friends.
8. What led to the legal age of adulthood being lowered by a year in South Korea?
A. The realization of youth’s earlier maturity.
B. The plan to reduce economic pressure on families.
C. The determination to satisfy teenagers’ expectations.
D. The requirement for youth’s earlier practice of voting rights.
9. Who received South Korea’s first recorded coming-of-age celebration according to the text?
A. Prince Wang Juan in the Goryeo Dynasty.
B. King Gwangjong in the Goryeo Dynasty.
C. An upper-class 15-year-old in the Joseon Dynasty.
D. A middle-class 15-year-old in the Joseon Dynasty.
10. What marked the important change in celebrating adulthood during the Joseon Dynasty?
A. A new type of hairstyle. B. A specific birthday outfit.
C. Making one’s own hat with horsehair. D. Replacing short hairpins with long ones.
11. What does the last paragraph suggest?
A. Publicly-held ceremonies require group application.
B. Traditional ceremonies should be more widely practiced.
C. Teenagers nowadays prefer to celebrate adulthood at home.
D. Society has seen a wider range of adulthood celebrations.
A 9. A 10. A 11. D

根据第二段第二句“Its first written record of celebrating adulthood dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty, where King Gwangjong gifted Prince Wang Juan outfit (服装) reserved for male adults in 965.(最早的成人庆祝文字记录要追溯到高丽时期,公元965年,广宗王将成人服装赠给了王伷王子)”可知,高丽王朝时期的王伷王子接受了韩国第一个有记录的成年庆典。故选A。
根据第三段第二句“In this period, one of the most symbolic changes that adults-to-be went through was that boys would tie their long flowing (飘逸的) hair into a topknot (结) and cover it with at all black hat made of horsehair; likewise, girls put their hair, which they let fall as single braids (辫子) in youth, up into a knot and set it with a long hairpin (发簪).(在这一时期,即将成为成年人的人所经历的最具象征意义的变化之一是,男孩们会把他们飘逸的长发扎成一个顶髻,然后戴上由马毛制成的黑色帽子;同样地,女孩们把年轻时散成单根辫子的头发扎成一个结,然后用一个长发夹扎起来)”可知,在何塞王朝,庆祝成年的重要变化是发型的变化。故选A。
根据最后一段前两句“Today, the traditional coming-of-age ceremonies still live on, supported largely by government and public interests. But a set of very different customs has also been added.(今天,传统的成人仪式仍然存在,主要是由政府和公共利益支持的。但也增加了一套非常不同的习俗)”可推知,最后一段表明社会上庆祝成年的方式越来越多。故选D。
D
The ocean is home to more than 200,000 known species and as many as 2 million that we have yet to discover. And, it is also home to 24.4 trillion pieces of microplastics. In 2022, researchers spotlighted how bad marine microplastic pollution, is getting: The total amount of microplastics on the bottom of oceans has greatly increased. in the past two decades.
Microplastic particles don’t just end up at the bottom of the ocean. Animals are eating them — at least 1,500 species have been reported to ingest plastic. And a lot of it. For example, whales in New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf consume roughly three million microplastics daily, according to research published in Science of the Total Environment, which analyzed whale waste to see how much microplastics were present.
“Other research has shown that if plastics are small enough, they can cross the gut(肠道) wall and get into internal organs though the long-term effects are still unclear. Plastics can also release chemicals that are harmful to digestive system,” says Kahane-Rapport. “This is concerning, and while we do not yet understand the long-term health-effects, it is likely not a good sign for whales and their prey(猎物) to eat a man-made material like plastic.”
This is obviously bad for whales, but it also has effects on humans and the ocean at large. We are also part of these food chains and are consuming microplastics regularly. They are in our bottled water, in our table salt — they are even in our house dust and in the air we breathe. And we still don’t know what the health effects are. Meanwhile, the impact on whales — and what it indicates — is troubling on many fronts. “Whales are ecosystem engineers,” says Kahane-Rapport. “They can spread the nutrients that they consumed and serve as ecosystem guards — when whales are not healthy, other parts of the system will suffer.”
Kahane-Rapport says more research is needed. “The next research step will be to determine how much plastic the whales excrete(排出) and how much is left in their bodies. Following that, we would be able to determine the direct health effects on their tissues.”
12. What does the underlined word “ingest” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Deal with. B. Bring up. C. Take in. D. Spread out.
13. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Researches show contradictory results.
B. Digestive system is the most affected part.
C. Small plastics are more harmful than big ones.
D. Much about microplastics’ harm remains unclear.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The various sources of pollution.
B. Tab chain reaction of microplastics.
C. Possible solutions to plastic pollution.
D. Growing awareness of ocean protection
15. What will the following research focus on?
A. Microplastic pollution to the ocean bottom
B. The sufferings of other ocean creatures.
C. Whales’ contributions to the ecosystem.
D. The amount of plastic in whales bodies.
C 13. D 14. B 15. D
文章划线单词上文讲到“Microplastic particles don’t just end up at the bottom of the ocean. Animals are eating them — at least 1,500 species have been reported (微塑料颗粒不仅仅最终到达海底。动物正在吃它们——据报道至少有1500种……)”以及下文“For example, whales in New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf consume roughly three million microplastics daily(例如,新西兰豪拉基湾的鲸鱼每天消耗大约300万个微塑料)”可知,鲸鱼正在吃掉这些塑料微粒。 “Take in”符合这个意思。
文章第三段讲到“Plastics can also release chemicals that are harmful to digestive system,” says Kahane-Rapport. “This is concerning, and while we do not yet understand the long-term health-effects, it is likely not a good sign for whales and their prey(猎物) to eat a man-made material like plastic.”(塑料也会释放出对消化系统有害的化学物质,”Kahane Rapport说。“这令人担忧,虽然我们还不了解其对健康的长期影响,但鲸鱼及其猎物食用塑料等人造材料可能不是一个好兆头。”)”可知,我们对微塑料的危害仍知之甚少。因此,从第三段可以推断出关于微塑料的危害,目前还不清楚。故选D。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第四段讲到“We are also part of these food chains and are consuming microplastics regularly. They are in our bottled water, in our table salt — they are even in our house dust and in the air we breathe. And we still don’t know what the health effects are. (我们也是这些食物链的一部分,并且经常食用微塑料。它们存在于我们的瓶装水、食盐中——甚至存在于我们家的灰尘和我们呼吸的空气中。我们仍然不知道对健康的影响是什么。)”可知,本段主要展示微塑料的连锁反应。故选B。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。文章最后一段讲到“The next research step will be to determine how much plastic the whales excrete(排出) and how much is left in their bodies. Following that, we would be able to determine the direct health effects on their tissues. (下一步的研究将是确定鲸鱼排泄出多少塑料,以及它们体内还剩多少塑料。之后,我们将能够确定对其组织的直接健康影响。)”可知,接下来的研究将关注鲸鱼体内塑料的数量。故选D。
