Evangeline Iarossi is a softball (垒球) player from Tampa, Florida. She played with a softball league, but her community faced several problems. One of them was a lack of available fields for practices and games.
Her local league had some baseball fields, but only one softball field was available. That meant many of her practices were canceled. When the baseball teams needed room, they’d often take over the softball field, making it even harder to practice and play. Iarossi’s team would end up on a T-ball field. “A lot of girls don’t get practice, and they are dropping out,” she said. “When they couldn’t practice because they couldn’t get on the fields, they didn’t improve and finally quit because it was not fun for them anymore.”
Instead of letting others deal with the problem, Iarossi decided to send a handwritten note to the city’s leader, who was a basketball star at the University of Tampa. Her goal was to get support for the cause, but it did much more. Her note inspired the city’s government to provide the funding from an entertainment company to build more fields that are accessible to everyone.
“I said it’s not the 1800s anymore,” Iarossi commented. “Girls would like to play sports too.” It even led to an appearance on a well-known show to discuss her efforts. “I hope that all girls get to play softball, and that it’s just fair for all in sports.”
4. Why did many of the girl softball players give up halfway?
A. They were afraid of getting on the fields. B. They found it hard to play softball well.

6. Which words can best describe Iarossi?

7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Win Support for Girls’ Play Opportunities. B. Call for Fairness in All Sports.
C. Public Support Is the Key to Success. D. Practice Makes Perfect.

Being able to run 26. 2 miles means you’ re in good health, right? Not exactly. We’ve already found some of the benefits (好处) of long-distance running, but now we’ll see the darker side of the marathon.
Marathoners who die in training or on the race course usually make headlines because these tragedies seem so unusual — who could be in better health and less likely to die than a runner? At the age of 52, Jim Fixx, a celebrated runner, died in 1984. In this condition, the arteries (动脉) walls become thickened, causing less blood to flow through them. In 2007, 28-year-old Ryan Shay died while competing in the U. S. Olympic marathon trials. His death was caused by an irregular (不规则的) heartbeat.
It’s obvious that running affects the heart, but did you know running can increase the size of the heart? Hearts can become bigger when an athlete is doing physical training. The body supply the increased amount of blood needed by increasing the size of the organ. After that the hearts can lead to irregular heartbeat, which can lead to heart failure.
Some marathoners think their fitness level absolves them from health problems. This simply isn’t the case. Medical examinations can find the risk factors that kill and injure runners. There are ways to reduce your risk factors. Don’t think you can eat or drink whatever you want because running will burn off the calories — diets rich in fat can lead to heart problems.
In addition to these life-threatening aspects of the sport, there are other sports injuries to be aware of. Most of these are overuse or over-training injuries that can be prevented by resting properly. While you should approach the sport with caution (谨慎) , you should also have fun running.
8. Why were the examples of Jim Fixx and Ryan Sha y given?
A. To show the possible danger of the marathon. B. To take pity on their death.
C. To tell the importance of regular exercise. D. To call on people not to exercise by themselves.
9. How does the heart manage to provide the increased need of blood?
A. By beating faster. B. By enlarging itself.
C. By beating more heavily. D. By working with other body parts.
10. What does the underlined word “absolves” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Shapes. B. Separates. C. Frees. D. Advises.
11. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Having a rest after injuries. B. Paying more attention to other injuries.
C. Stopping running completely. D. Being careful and having fun running.
D
Gustavo Dudamel comes back for another show. It’s the first night for the Los Angeles Philharmonic in California. When people see the conductor, the noise inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall gets louder. Dudamel walks to the stage and raises his head and arms. The group starts playing the Star Wars theme. At the end, people all jump up. It’s the kind of response you’d see at a concert by Taylor Swift, a very popular pop singer.
Dudamel says later that music is not just for fun. It brings us together even if we come in feeling very different. Under Dudamel’s leadership, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has spread the uniting power of music across differences in money, class, color and age. And its Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) has worked with more than 1,500 kids, giving them instruments and lessons so they can perform.
Dudamel grew up in a working- class family in Venezuela. His mom was a singing teacher. His dad played in a band. But what was more important for Dudamel’s music al growth was El Sistema, Venezuela’s national classical music education and performance program for poor kids. Dudamel joined when he was 5. It was El Sistema that gave him a violin three years later.
The YOLA program started in 2007, after Dudamel showed El Sistema’s work in Venezuela to members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic organization. The roots (根) Dudamel put down in Los Angeles have spread far beyond Disney Hall. In October 2021, the Beckmen YOLA Center opened its doors in Inglewood, California. The former bank building had been turned into a place for lessons, recording and performance.
Dudamel remembers someone once said: The young musicians shouldn’t be satisfied with a program that is just “good enough”. They should be given the best instruments, the best teachers, and the most inspiring places to grow and do well.
12. Why is Taylor Swift mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show Dudamel’s popularity.
B. To lead in the topic to discuss.
C. To explain the difficulty in conducting.
D. To compare the differences between Taylor Swift and Dudamel.
13. What is the purpose of YOLA?
A. To offer chances to adult musicians. B. To get the youth of different backgrounds together.
C. To provide musical education for the young. D. To help schools with music lessons.
14. What helps most in Dudamel’s musical development?
A. His parents’ experience. B. His natural ability in music.
C. The YOLA program’s support. D. His study in El Sistema.
15. What can be learned from paragraph 4?
A. The YOLA program has achieved more than expected.
B. The bank building was perfect for performance.
C. The Disney Hall cannot hold all of the YOLA members.
D. California needs more support for young musicians.

Lily loved her math notebook more than any other school thing — it was full of carefully stressed notes and neatly solved problems. Each page showed how hard she’d worked to learn math. She carried it everywhere putting it in her backpack every night and checking it twice each morning, knowing those pages helped her get better at math lately.
But one Monday morning, she felt scared when her fingers touched nothing but empty space in her backpack. “Where is it?” she said softly, opening the bag wide and pouring out its things onto her desk. Pencils and a half-eaten chocolate bar fell out, but no notebook. She searched her desk, looking through textbooks. Then she knelt down to look at the classroom floor, even checking under nearby desks, but it was gone.
Just as she planned to run to the teacher for help, she saw her classmate Mia was flipping (快速翻动) through a notebook that looked exactly like hers. Mia was good at math too and. they had competed for the top grade last month. “That’s mine!” she rushed over, her voice shaking with anger and fear. “Did you take it to copy my notes? I spent hours writing them!”
Mia’s face turned red. “No, this is my notebook! I bought it last week.” She held it out. But Lily didn’t listen. She thought about their recent competition. “You’re lying!” she said sharply.” I have star stickers (贴纸) on the cover — just like that!”
The argument got louder and their classmates stared. Some whispered, others leaned (倾斜) in to watch. Mia pressed her lips tight. She sighed, closed the notebook gently, put it in her bag, grabbed her backpack, and walked away quietly. Lily stood there, still angry, but suddenly not sure if she’d been right.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11.

G. Getting started is often difficult, so here are some tips on how to write a book.
【答案】16. G 17. F 18. D 19. E 20. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了如何写一本书,包括明确写作目的、设置合适的工作空间、确立每日和每周的写作目标以及尽早并经常获取一般性意见。
【16题详解】
上文“Anyone with a story to tell can write a book, either for their own enjoyment or to publish for all to see.(任何一个有故事要讲的人都可以写书,要么是为了自己的享受,要么是为了出版让所有人都能看到)”说明写书这件事是普遍可行的。
上文“Make clear why you’re writing a book.(弄清楚你为什么要写书)”说明要明确写书的目的。空处和前文为顺接关系,说明在开始写书之前要思考写书的原因。所以F项“在你开始写作之前,问问自己为什么要写这本书。”符合语境,“ask yourself about your reasons”与标题“Make clear why”呼应,“Before you start writing”强调动笔前的思考,与后文疑问句形成逻辑衔接。故选F。
【18题详解】
上文“There’s no one perfect workspace for every writer. Some prefer a tidy desk in a quiet room.(没有一个适合所有作家的完美工作空间。有些人喜欢在安静的房间里有一张整洁的桌子)”说明不同的作家有不同的工作空间偏好。空处和前文为转折关系,对比不同工作环境。所以D项“然而,有些人在嘈杂的咖啡馆里工作得最好。”符合语境,“others work best in a noisy coffee shop”与“Some prefer a tidy desk”形成 “一些人……另一些人……” 的并列结构,符合“没有完美工作空间”的论述。故选D。
【19题详解】
上文“Instead of hoping to produce 10 pages at a time during a random flash of creativity, try setting a goal to write 1 page each day.(与其希望在随机闪现的灵感中一次写出10页,不如试着设定一个每天写1页的目标)”说明要设定合理的写作目标。空处和前文为顺接关系,说明如何设定写作目标。所以E项“根据你的写作速度和截止日期来设定你的写作目标。”符合语境,“Set your writing goal”呼应主题,“based on writing speed and deadlines” 解释设定目标的依据,与“1 page each day”的具体例子形成补充说明。故选E。
【20题详解】
下文“Don’t wait until you’ve completed an entire book before showing it to anyone. Let someone you trust look over each chapter and offer general opinions on the quality of the work, rather than editing for style and grammar.(不要等到整本书都写完了才给别人看。让你信任的人审阅每一章,并对作品的质量提出总体意见,而不是对风格和语法进行编辑)”说明本段主要介绍不要等完书再给人看,让信任的人逐章给出总体意见。所以B项“尽早并经常获得总体意见。”适合作本段主旨句。“early and often”对应“don’t wait until completed”,“general opinions”与后文“offer general opinions”关键词复现。故选B。

【答案】 As soon as she got home, Lily’s mom gave her a notebook. “Lily, I found your notebook in the laundry room. It must have slipped out of your backpack when you put it on the floor while doing laundry this morning,” her mom explained. Lily’s heart sank. She realized she had made a terrible mistake. She quickly grabbed her backpack and rushed to Mia’s house, her mind racing with what to say. When she arrived, she took a deep breath and knocked on the door. “Mia, I’m really sorry. I found my notebook at home. I was wrong to accuse you,” Lily said, her voice filled with regret.
Mia responded with a smile. “It’s okay, Lily. I knew you didn’t mean it. We all make mistakes sometimes. And I’m glad your notebook is found,” Mia said kindly. Lily felt a huge weight lifted off her shoulders. She thanked Mia and promised to be more careful in the future. From that day on, Lily and Mia’s friendship grew stronger. They learned that trust and understanding were more important than winning a competition, and they supported each other in their studies, making their math classes even more enjoyable.
