Many people might think that if they had more money, then they would be happier in life. For example, when we see others with expensive clothes or nice cars, it’s natural to envy them and wish we could have the same. But the things that money can buy cannot bring happiness to a person for a long time.
Is that really true? Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. But it’s not having money that brings happiness. Instead, it’s giving money to others that makes people happy. It could be buying a gift for a friend or a family member. It could be buying a homeless person food to eat. It could be giving money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel? Whether it is a small or large amount of money, people feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too.
This connection (关联) between your happiness and the happiness of others is called “ubuntu (乌班图精神)” in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa. He asked some children to race to a nearby tree. The first child to touch the tree would get a sweet treat. Surprisingly, all the children held hands and ran together. They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they did this. The children simply said they could only enjoy the treat if everyone could share in the joy. It seems that the key to happiness lies not in how much money we have, but in how we choose to share it.
( ) 31. What does the underlined word “envy” probably mean?
A. Support. B. Admire. C. Accept. D. Value.
( ) 32. When do people feel happier according to the text?
A. When they buy something. B. When they make more money.
C. When they give money to others. D. When they get gifts from others.
( ) 33. How does the writer explain the idea of happiness connection in Paragraph 3?
A. By asking questions. B. By making a survey.
C. By showing a fact. D. By sharing a story.
( ) 34. What does the writer try to tell us?
A. Buying new things can make people happy.
B. The key to happiness is to make others happy.
C. If you want to be happy, you can visit Africa.
D. People who have a lot of money might not be happy.
( ) 35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Ways of Making Money
B. Keys to Achieving Success
C. Suggestions on Spending Money
D. The Connection Between Money and Happiness

Work Songs
Work songs are also called “haozi”. People sing them when they are in heavy work, like moving big rocks or pulling boats by the river. Work songs can always light up the spirits of working people.
According to different jobs, there are different kinds of work songs: field work songs, boatman work songs, fisherman work songs and workshop work songs.
Work songs have four features (特点). First, they are always expressed in a very direct way, which makes it possible to show the feelings naturally. Second, their rhythms (节奏) change with the physical movements of working groups. Some rhythms are heavy and strong, while others are short and light. There are also long and comforting ones. Third, because of the nature of physical work, the music forms of work songs are simple and repeated. Fourth, the singing is done through a leading singer and answering singers. The leading singer would sing to the group to encourage them, and then the answering singers would sing together by repeating part of the leading singer’s sentences.
For thousands of years, work songs have played an important role in the struggle of working people against nature. They show the wisdom of brave working people. Therefore, they have both historical and cultural values.

前文提到“failed in her science project”,项目失败后心情低落,应选用hopeless(绝望的)。

的固定结构是such a+形容词+单数名词,such a kind girl,应选用such a。so后接形容词/副词,无so a用法。
根据前文“Emma kept looking for chances to help others”,此处sharing snacks with a lonely student是具体善举,与别人一起用snacks用sharing(分享)。
根据“Confused, she ____ the pages carefully but saw no key”可知她在寻找钥匙,寻找钥匙用searched for(寻找)。took up“占据”、went by“流逝”、put through“接通”均不符合动作语境。
根据下文“Your project is creative, don’t lose heart.”可知在科学展前紧张时,朋友给予的是encouraged(鼓励)。
前句“She felt proud of what she had done”与后句“she did not win a prize”是让步关系(没获奖,但仍自豪),应选用although。because“因为”、if “如果”、since“既然”均逻辑不符。

It was the last math exam before summer. But Scott didn’t worry. He was the best math student in the class, and he never had to work very hard at it. It used to make the other students mad because he never studied, yet he always got the best marks.
As usual, he was the first one done. The next day, a call came to his house and he was asked to go to the school.
When he arrived at the school, the headmaster was there to meet him. “Wow!” he thought. “I must have scored 100 percent on the exam!” But what the headmaster said next left Scott surprised. “You failed,” she said. “Since you were a little kid, you have found math easy. You surely have the gift for math but you waste it. It’s time to know that you can’t just walk into an exam unprepared.”
The headmaster continued, “I was like you when I was a girl. My gift was in science. I didn’t need to study for science at all. I was the best in my class. But one day, I failed a big exam. You see this picture? It was given to me by my science teacher that day. This ugly-looking bird is called a buzzard (秃鹫). Read what it says at the bottom.”
Scott read it aloud, “Welcome to the Buzzard Club. Remember, it’s not about brains. It’s about hard work.”
“A buzzard can only fly if it gets a running start,” the headmaster explained. “It can’t just fly into the air like other birds. But once it’s in the air, it can fly very high.

Stay Positive and Be a Sunny Teenager
As teenagers, we may face different problems in our daily life. For me, the biggest challenges come from study pressure and peer relationships.
Last term, I struggled with heavy schoolwork and often felt stressed, which even affected my friendship with classmates. Later, I tried two ways to solve them. First, I made a daily study plan to manage my time better, and asked teachers for help when I met difficulties. Second, I started to communicate more with my classmates, and we even studied together after class.
From my experience, I realized that we should face problems bravely instead of avoiding them. Talking to people we trust is also a good way to cheer ourselves up.
