Yuan Rishe’s love for the environment came from a story she heard as a child: A German woman couldn’t find a way to recycle her used batteries (电池) in China, so she brought them back to Germany.
After learning that batteries could cause pollution, Yuan started saving the used ones from her toys in a bag. When she heard that a children’s group was recycling used batteries, she sent them there right away. To her surprise, the group sent her a thank-you note, which led her on the way to environmental protection.
In 1999, 6-year-old Yuan organized a paper recycling activity. Her team put a box at the back of their classroom and used it to collect waste paper. The money they made by selling waste paper was then used to buy trees. The activity also made Yuan the only student to win a Ford Conservation and Environmental Grant (福特汽车环保奖) in 2001.
In 2004, Yuan made a big plan: to plant 2,008 trees on wasteland together with other children before the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games! However, many students doubted whether she could find land to plant trees. Yuan then turned to Wei Guiying, an environmentalist, for help. Wei offered a small land without thinking twice. Besides, with the help of students across the country, Yuan succeeded at last.
Now, Yuan is a primary school teacher. She hopes to help her students realize the importance of environmental protection. “It’s great to see them changing little by little and learning from every activity,” she says.

A. Because she wanted to win a big prize.

Do you speak a dialect (方言) in daily life? As many Chinese people speak Mandarin (普通话), some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
Today, people in Taiyuan usually speak their hometown dialect when communicating with their family and other local speakers. A survey about “passing down Taiyuan dialect” was made recently. Here are the results.
Opinions of passing down Taiyuan dialect
Chart Ⅰ
This project pays attention to how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world.
How did China make the language resource library?
A big national effort has been put into this project. Over the last five years, more than 350 universities and research groups have joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000 dialect speakers. People can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips (音频片段) and over 5 million videos in the online library.
Chart Ⅱ
The project is now entering its second part. This includes creating digital (数字化的) tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.
According to British expert Harold Palmer, dialects are the key to storing (储存) local cultures. Language truthfully shows the history, beliefs and culture of an area. So it is important to protect the dialect.

【74题答案】
【答案】A possible version:
Putting yourself in other people’s shoes is a kind of communication skill. It allows us to better understand each other. Also, it is necessary for everyone to learn it.
One day, I asked my parents to take me to a bookshop, but they were too busy. I got mad and argued with them. After leaving home angrily, I returned and found nobody. Then I realized how tired they were — working hard but still caring for me. That evening, I apologized. My father said life becomes beautiful when we learn to put ourselves in others’ shoes.
I’ve learned that understanding comes first. When something unpleasant happens, think from a different angle.
