Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm-up & Lead-in (5 mins)
Show pictures of Blue Sky Rescue volunteers (from 1a). Ask: What do you think they are doing? Have you heard of Blue Sky Rescue?
Activate prior knowledge about volunteer work (link to Unit 8 theme).
Step 2: Pre-reading (5 mins)
Look at 1b: What is a “hook” in a speech? What is a “call to action”?Explain briefly (hook: start with a story/fact to interest the audience; call to action: encourage people to do something).
Predict: What might the speech be about?
Step 3: While-reading (20 mins)
Skimming (1b): Read the speech quickly. Find: What kind of hook does the speaker use? Which paragraph has a call to action?
Scanning (1c): Read again. Match paragraph summaries (e.g., Para 1: greets audience; Para 2: tells a story; Para 3: talks about work done; Para 4: what he learned; Para 5: invites to volunteer).
Close reading (1d): Read carefully. Answer questions:
When did he join Blue Sky Rescue? Why?
What has he learnt?
What difficulties do they face?
Why is he willing to risk his life?
What qualities should a volunteer have?
Discuss in pairs: Why does the speaker say “Help others, help yourself”?
Step 4: Post-reading (10 mins)
1e: Discuss the sentences (Help others, help yourself; The rose in your hand...) in groups. Share opinions: Do you agree? Why?
Connect to real life: Have you ever helped others? How did it make you feel?
Step 5: Summary (5 mins)
Recap the speech structure (hook, story, work done, learning, call to action).
Key phrases: sign up, make a difference, voluntary, teamwork, value of life.

Teaching Reflection
Did students understand the speech structure? Were they able to identify the hook and call to action?
Were the discussion questions (1e) meaningful? Did students connect to real-life volunteering?
Adjustments: If students struggled with “hook” concept, use more examples next time.
教学评价Teaching Evaluation
Observe students’ participation in discussions (1a, 1e) and their ability to answer 1d questions.
Check homework (retelling, speech writing) for understanding of content and structure.
Assess group work: Did students collaborate well? Did they share ideas effectively?
