①Did you know that when you surf the web, websites in some countries put secret software on your computer? The software collects a large amount of information about you and sends it to internet companies. The Internet companies sell it to other businesses. Your personal information can also be gathered from social media sites. There are many ways your information can be used.
②First, companies collect your information and record all your online habits. They find out where you live, what websites you visit and what you do online. With this information, they can guess other things about you. For example, they can guess if you are a male or female, how old you are and your interests. The companies use this information to decide which ads are best for you. Two people can go to the same website, but they will see different ads. For example, someone who likes sports could see ads for trainers, and someone who likes films might see ads for a film.
③Your personal information could also be sold. Some companies collect information, so they can sell it to other businesses. A business that collects and sells personal information is called a data broker. When data brokers sell your information, a lot of different companies will know your online habits. Then the companies will advertise products from other websites to you.
④Another way your personal information can be collected is through social media. When your information is on social media, a lot of people can see it. Even if you don’t use social media, a friend might post a picture or video of you with your name on it. Pictures and videos can be shared for free on social media, which is one of the great advantages. However, that same act of sharing could be a problem for your own security (安全). If someone knows too much about you, they steal (偷窃) your identity. Then they can buy things online and post messages while pretending (假装) to be you.
⑤_________. The law is finally changing when it comes to technology. In the European Union, for example, they have introduced the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This rule means that internet users can now ask companies to show them what information they have about them and even make them delete it. If other countries do the same, the internet could soon be a much safer place.
21.According to Paragraph 2, what will the companies find by collecting your information?

D.Different people can see different ads on the same website because their online habits have been gathered.

Yangtze through Youth
The Yangtze River plays an important part in teenagers’ lives. What does the Yangtze mean to young people growing up along it? Let’s read their stories.
Chen Muyang, 15
As a teenager living in Wuhan, the Yangtze River is like a close friend to me. When I was in primary school, I often hung out at Hankou River Beach with my friends. But later, I noticed plastic bags and bottles on the riverbank and floating on the water. It made me sad to see fish die because of pollution.
To make a change, I joined the Yangtze River Protectors’ Team. It is a group made up of middle school students. Every weekend, we go to the riverbank, split into groups to pick up rubbish, and tell people walking by not to litter. Everyone should help protect nature. The government can make more eco-friendly rules, and we can also do our part.
Fang Yihong, 13
Childhood tastes always stay in our hearts. I grew up with the taste of Yangtze River water in every meal. When I left home, I missed this familiar taste very much. I like staying by the riverbank: old women washing vegetables on mossy steps, and people waiting for ferries when dusk comes. Here, the river is more than just scenery — it is life itself. The bridges over the river connect the whole city. When I walk across the big bridge, I can feel it shake a little when trains pass by. To me, home is not just a place on a map. It is in the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the river that flows through our lives.
Huang Jingxuan, 14
To me, the Yangtze River is more than just water and waves. It paints our four seasons and holds all my happy childhood memories with friends.
In spring, we get together to fly kites by the wide river. In summer, we enjoy ice cream and play with water guns, feeling the soft wind blow. In autumn, we pick up leaves from the riverbank to use as bookmarks. In winter, we all ride bikes along the beautiful shore. Every season by the Yangtze leaves a special mark on me.
I believe the river flows through our stories and our blood. It is the city’s pulse. My biggest wish is that the Yangtze will always be full of life, and keep nurturing every child in Wuhan who grows up by its side. We will always protect its beauty in return.
A.The Yangtze is full of seasonal memories of childhood
B.People protect the Yangtze River by cleaning up rubbish
C.The Yangtze provides people with plenty of clean water to drink.
D.The Yangtze stands for hometown feeling and life

The folk art form, kuaiban, which has a long history, can be performed by a group or a single person. With one or two pairs of bamboo clappers—a kind of traditional Chinese musical instrument in their hands, the performers tell stories in the local dialect (方言). These stories are usually folk tales or about social life.
Recently, Liu Jiming and Wan Yifu made and shared three short videos by using kuaiban which were viewed about 4 million times. As a result, Liu and Wan have gained more than 1 million followers on the Internet. They’ve created many new works to raise people’s awareness. Some of their works are about the danger of drunk driving and food safety. They also write stories to show respect to people who make contributions, such as traffic policemen.
According to Liu and Wan, people can understand kuaiban pieces without difficulty. The stories told in kuaiban pieces are close to people’s daily lives. Thus, they consider that it is a fun way to introduce the Chinese folk culture through kuaiban. And what matters to them is that both young people and old people begin to know the charm of the art form, kuaiban, which may not be paid much attention to, compared to other traditional art forms.
Folk art forms, like xiangsheng, pingshu and kuaiban, share something in common. These traditional art forms show the beauty and value of traditional Chinese culture so they should be known by more people and get to more areas. Luckily, through the Internet, new performers who go on sharing kuaiban pieces, like Liu and Wan are playing an active role. Hopefully these Chinese folk art forms will be alive with the times.

The earth is the only home for everyone on it. It’s crying for our help now. As middle school students, we have the power to make a difference and help save the earth!
To protect the earth, we can start by saving water, planting more trees, and reducing pollution. We can also save animals and recycle whenever possible.
We can also choose to ride a bike instead of driving a car to reduce pollution, and make sure to always throw trash in the proper bins. By doing our part, we can make a positive impact on the environment and create a better future for ourselves.
