Passage 1
(24-25八年级下·江苏扬州宝应县·期末)After the lunchtime rush, it’s time for the food delivery (递送) drivers to eat.
Liu Lijie, halfway through a 13-hour workday, usually rides to a restaurant in Beijing for his favorite choice—mutton noodle soup, for 12 yuan, 6 yuan cheaper than the regular price.
The reduced-price meals, known as aixincan or loving meals, are available at some restaurants in large cities, home to large populations of migrant workers (农民工) who come looking for jobs.
“There is a lot of pressure in life since I came to Beijing to work, so eating aixincan is both cheap and convenient,” says 40-year-old Liu, who arrived in Beijing two years ago from Shanxi province. In order to get back earlier to make money, he digs into his meal hurriedly at the Yushiji Restaurant.
Luo Shuai, another delivery driver, learned of Yushiji’s aixincan through his workmates and has since become a daily customer at the restaurant, which serves (服务,招待) food from his native (本地的) Henan province.
“It makes me think of my hometown,” says 27-year-old Luo, who moved to Beijing at the end of last year.
Feng Yong, the 43-year-old manager of a meat pie restaurant, spends much of his day making pies. He says the restaurant began serving aixincan to help people in need and inspire others to do the same. As a Shandong province native who moved to Beijing more than 20 years ago, Feng says he has a deep understanding of being an outsider working in a new city.
The key, he says, is to avoid any embarrassment (尴尬) for customers who are in need. The staff do what they can to offer help and don’t ask any private things of the customers.
“We don’t refuse them anything, just as long as they’re full,” Feng says.

Passage 2
(24-25八年级下·江苏南京联合体·期末)
“I found it! I found it!” a second grader shouted excitedly as he rushed to Ms. Liao, the librarian.
“This is exactly what I’ve been looking for — a copy of Journey to the West with pictures of Guanyin in it.”
Liao checked the student’s library card. “Have a good read, my dear,” she said. Seeing the boy rush back to a plastic chair in the corner of the room, holding the book like a box of treasure, Liao let out a broad smile.
“Children need a stable (稳定的) environment to develop reading skills,” she said. The library, covering less than 20 square meters and holding about 5,000 books, provides such an environment for the children of migrant workers (农民工) in Tongzhou, Beijing.
As a volunteer librarian, Liao helps children borrow and return books and organize the shelves. She also enjoys chatting with the students about their choices.
The library is part of the Weilan Library project, which works to set up libraries for migrant children. By late October, the project had 82 branches in different cities, helping more than 80,000young readers.
Zuo Qiao, director of the Weilan Library project, works hard on it. “Three rules are important in any one of our libraries: a large number of high-quality children’s books; consistent (连贯的) opening hours; and helping kids make their own choice of books to borrow and read,” he said.
About five years ago, Zuo found that many schools for migrant children had a dust-covered room with books, shelves, desks and chairs all over the place. The room was once a library donated by a charity group, he added.
“Many good-hearted people donated books and set up libraries at these schools, but they often ended up being forgotten and left in darkness in the long run,” he said.
He believed that every child should have the right to go to libraries, so he and his friends started the Weilan Library project.
On the window of a library, there is a postcard written by a third grader. It reads, “Your library is small, for us it is a grand hall of knowledge and teaches us so much.”

Passage 3
(24-25八年级下·江苏盐城·期末)Grade 8 students at Sunshine Middle School know that some people in Africa still don’t have enough clean water. So last month, they took part in a meaningful activity—helping build clean water wells (井) in Africa.
The activity started in 2018 and has lasted for seven years. Each year, students offer a helping hand by raising money. This year, they plan to raise about ¥ 10,000 to build the seventh well.
As part of the activity, students also went on a “water walk” on May 21. To experience how millions of people in Africa get their water every day, they carried buckets (桶) of water from Moonlight River to school. They had to walk about 6 kilometers. The heavy buckets made them truly feel how difficult it is to get clean water in poor areas.
One water well can provide clean and safe drinking water for over 500 people in Africa. A Grade 8 teacher also took part in the walk. He said, “I always tell my students that this is the most meaningful teaching and learning I have ever been a part of.”
This activity not only teaches students to care for others but also sends hope to people far away through action.

The Seine is a beautiful river which goes through France. However, the Seine has been seriously polluted. There are even laws that do not let people swim in the water. Raphael wanted to clean the river. He wanted people to swim in the Seine in the future.
Cleaning the river was a big job, Raphael fished rubbish out of the river. He had done it nearly every weekend for the past two years. He fished with his dad. They could catch a ton of rubbish in a single day.
Raphael learned about cleaning rivers from YouTube. In 2019, he found a video. People were fishing metal (金属) objects out of rivers. They used ropes tied to magnets (磁铁). That Christmas, Raphael asked his parents for supplies. He wanted some ropes, a hook (鱼钩), and a powerful magnet. The magnet was very strong. It could attract metal objects weighing more than a ton.
When he began, fishing for metal was just a lazy weekend activity. But Raphael soon saw just how much rubbish there was at the bottom of the river. He wanted to do more. “It became like a full-time job,” he said.
Raphael won an award for his efforts (努力). He received the Medal of Paris. Raphael was confident about his progress in the last two years. A section of the Seine was clearer than the rest of the river. That was where he first started fishing for metal.

(24-25八年级下·江苏宿迁泗阳县·期末)Lisa, a 13-year-old student from Suqian Middle School, started the “Green City” project in 2024 after seeing piles of litter in her neighborhood park. “One day I saw a plastic bag stuck in a tree, and it just made me sad,” she says. “I thought, If I don’t do something, who will?”
Every Saturday morning, Lisa and her team of 15 classmates meet at 8 a. m. They divide into groups: some carry trash bins, others hold signs to remind people to keep the environment clean. Last month, they organized a “Recycling Workshop” for primary school students, teaching them how to classify paper, glass, and plastic. Passage 3
(24-25八年级下·江苏扬州宝应县·期末)My friend Julie and I are crazy about creating (创建) a beautiful green town.
Gardening Course
Every September, our city has a special festival. Crowds of happy people go to the park. That’s because the gardening competition takes place there.
For Julie and me, it was a pity that we couldn’t take part in the gardening competition, for that was also the first day of our high school. We were busy choosing courses. We wanted to learn all about plants, gardening and farming. We thought it would help us succeed as gardeners.
Project presentation
After a year’s study, I decided to give a talk to my class about my project—the green farm.
“Good morning!” I said, “During my studies, I’ve learned a lot about city farming. Now, I want to do something with what I’ve learned.”
I showed them a small plastic model. “This is the high street of our town. This is an old, nine-floor car park. No one has used it for the last two years and it’s now for sale.”
“I’ve designed a city farm using the car park building. There will be eight floors to farm fruit and vegetables. This design can help us collect rainwater to wet the soil. And we can also use energy from the sun to power the special growing lights.”
“I will hire (租) the space out to local people and they will sell everything good enough for the environment in local shops. Also, the ninth floor will be for those who want to grow their own plants.”
My audience looked interested and my project got the highest marks in my class.
Later, Julie helped me search the town for the perfect place for gardening—somewhere that was not the best neighbourhood, but a poor one. One where the road was full of holes and the pavement (人行道) was all broken came into our eyes. At last, we made it.
In the neighbourhood, we posted letters through people’s doors with gardening instructions. More and more people cared about that and began to plant vegetable gardens.
Then in the same neighbourhood, we put grass over those broken old pavements for the kids to play on. Finally, we put up a sign that said, “Have fun here.”
When we finished, we were both covered in soil and completely tired. But Julie put an arm around my shoulders and smiled. “Not bad!” she said. “We can do more to make our town greener!”

Passage 1
(24-25八年级下·江苏南京外国语学校·期末)My wife and I liked keeping old things at home, even when they were broken. When a radio, an iron, or a table lamp broke, it became a trove (宝藏). Any chance our children got, they would take apart (拆开) each broken appliance (电器) to see the inside. I can’t say this activity is the only reason for their choosing technical (技术的) jobs but I’m sure it has something to do with that.
It all started when our clock radio stopped working after years of service. Some of you might remember the type: the plastic body with bright red numbers showing the time. On a whim, I didn’t throw it away but placed it on the floor and gave my kids some tools. “Have a try. Take it apart.” Our 8-year-old daughter was excited. With a cheer, she started working on it right away. Her younger brother joined soon. Once they opened the radio, the excitement only grew. “Look at all these wires” “Is this what lights up the numbers?” There were a lot of smiles and giggles.
Soon, it became a tradition. Any time an appliance broke, it didn’t go to the trash. They went to the “project pile” in the garage. When we had time, we broke them down together. I enjoyed showing the kids how to use various tools to do the work. One of my favorite moments came when the mother of our boy’s friend called my wife. She asked why her son suddenly wanted to take apart their perfectly good coffee maker. We laughed.
Of course, I was always there with the kids, watching carefully to keep things safe. I kept the kids away from sharp parts and anything possibly dangerous. But they still had freedom to explore, break, cut, and go at their own pace (节奏).
Through these fun times, our kids learned to be curious while also understanding something about patience and attention to details. As for my wife and me, we’ve learned to relax, simply watch, and realize that we didn’t have to guide their every step.

Inside, she saw a wooden box with “China 1987” written on it. Mei opened it and found an old Leica camera. It was dusty but looked like it could still work.
Mei’s hands shook as she held it. She remembered seeing this camera in old photos—her grandfather had been a famous photographer (摄影师) in Beijing before moving to Canada.
Suddenly, she heard a voice. “Mei! What are you doing?” Mei turned and dropped the camera. Lina stood in the doorway, her face pale. She held the door so hard that her fingers turned white.
“Mom, I…” Mei tried to explain, but the words stuck in her throat. “Why did you hide this? Grandpa was a photographer You always said he sold electronics.”
Lina’s voice turned cold. “He left our family for his art. Your grandma worked two jobs while he took photos of storms. Photography isn’t a real job.”
She quickly put the camera back and closed the box. “You should try your best to become a doctor, not wasting time on hobbies.”
Mei felt tears in her eyes. “But Dad supports my photography He says…”

“Mei? What…” Lina looked at the camera, then softened.
Mei handed her the photo. It showed Lina with messy hair, but her face looked peaceful in the dark light. “You look happy here,” Mei said. “Not like working at the hospital.”
She knelt beside Lina. “Mom, I’ll study hard. But can I also learn photography? Grandpa’s camera…it connects us. Let me show you my world through it.” Lina was silent for a long time. “Look at the tree over there!” cried Peter. The girls looked and saw a tree moving slowly down towards the railway line!
“It’s magic!” said Phyllis. “I knew the railway was magic. Look, some other trees are moving, too.” They watched as the trees moved on and on, grass and stones moving with them. Then a big rock began to move as well. Soon, everything crashed down onto the railway line below.
“It’s across the line!” said Phyllis, feeling a little frightened now.
“Yes,” said Peter, “And the 11.29 hasn’t gone by yet. We must let them know at the station, or there will be an awful accident”.
“There isn’t time,” said Bobbie. “It’s past eleven now.”
They thought for a moment. “We need something red. Then we could go down on the line and wave it,” said Peter. “Everyone knows that red means danger, and the train would stop.”
“Our petticoats!” said Phyllis. “They’re red. Let’s take them off.” The girls did this.
“We’ll need some sticks as well,” said Peter, taking a knife from his pocket.
“Yes, cut them!” said Bobbie. “If we can’t stop the train, there will be a real accident and people will be killed.”
They cut the petticoats into six pieces and put them onto sticks. Now they had six red flags. They placed two flags into stone heaps on the line, then Bobbie and Phyllis each took one, and Peter took the other two. They stood ready for the train. It seemed a long time before they heard the train.
“Wave your flags!” ordered Peter. “But don’t stand on the line, Bobbie.”
The train came very, very fast. The two flags fell, but Bobbie ran across and picked up one of them. “The train’s not going to stop! They won’t see us. It’s no good!” Bobbie shouted. Then she ran onto the line, waving her two flags.
“Get back, Bobbie!” shouted Peter. But Bobbie didn’t move from the line. She waved and waved her flags, shouting “Stop, stop!”
It did stop... but only twenty metres from Bobbie.

Passage 3
(24-25八年级下·江苏宿迁宿城区·期末)I was now in my twenty-seventh year on the island. One evening, Friday went out to look for food. But soon he was back, and he looked very afraid.
“Master! Master!” he cried, “There’s a great ship near the island, and men are coming to the beach in a boat!”
I jumped up and ran with him down to the beach. I saw that it was an English ship! But why was it here? English ships never came this way. Perhaps they were pirates (海盗)! “Don’t let them see you, Friday!” I called, “We’ll hide in the trees and watch.”
There were eleven men in the boat, but three of them were prisoners (囚犯). Their arms were tied with a rope. The other sailors pushed the three prisoners up the beach, laughing and shouting and hitting them. The three prisoners walked slowly along the beach and sat down under a tree, not far from us. They looked very unhappy.
Very quietly, I came up behind them through the trees, and called out to them in English.
“Don’t be afraid,” I said. “I’m an Englishman. Perhaps I can help you.”
The three men turned and looked at me. They did not answer at once. They were too surprised.
Perhaps they thought I was a wild man, in my strange clothes made of animals’ skins, and with my long hair and beard (胡须).
Then the oldest man spoke, “I am the captain of that ship,” he said, “and these two men are my first and second officers. Last night there was a mutiny (叛乱), and the seamen took the ship from me. Now they’re going to leave the three of us here, to die on this island.”
“Do these mutineers (叛军) have guns?”
“Only two,” he answered, “and they’ve left those on the boat.”
“All right,” I said. “We’ll fight them. But if we get your ship back for you, you must take me back to England.”
Friday ran back to my house to get all the guns, and the captain and I made a plan.

In her grandparents’ house, Meg found an old family calendar (日历), with each page filled out carefully. On June 6, 1892: “Helped Mr. Thompson repair his house.” On November 14, 1907: “Volunteered my time at an old people’s home.”
“That is the tradition (传统) of our family.” her grandmother explained. “Every day, for generations (一代代), we complete one kind act and write it down, no matter how small it is.”
Meg was interested. “Why?”
Her grandmother smiled, “We believe that through continuous kind actions, we can create a life of purpose. Every day, we find a moment of light by offering help to others, even when the world around us is dark.”
With respect, Meg decided to keep the tradition. Every night, she recorded her act for the day. As years went by, Meg’s kind acts grew, from helping a stranger on the road to organizing community clean-ups.

Passage 2
(24-25八年级下·江苏盐城东台·期末)Last fall, I signed up (报名) for a four-month program for teenagers in Mountain High School. I went there because hikes, art and fields of corn sounded fun to me.
When I set out in August, I hugged my parents goodbye. “See you in December!” I said.
My parents nodded. They were worried—I could tell. It was because they knew me so well. They knew that I had trouble reaching out. They knew that I was shy and I made friends slowly.
My dad looked worriedly at me and my mom’s voice shook as she said, “You’re going to be just fine, baby girl.”
The first two weeks was difficult. I made half-hearted (不热心的) small talk at meals, and I cried in the shower. For me, and I couldn’t go back.
One day during the third week, I spent two hours collecting corn with one of my classmates. My feelings matched the darkening sky. I wanted to be alone. After a while, she asked, “How many brothers or sisters do you have? ”
Finally, my classmate said the three magic words in the English language: I LOVE READING. Soon I found myself talking about books I enjoyed reading. I started to relax. A few bricks fell down from my wall of shyness.
A few more fell. I started to reach out. The bricks fell and fell and fell. By the end of the program, I was totally different. I ran through the dining hall. I jumped on the chairs, I sang.

Passage 3
(24-25八年级下·江苏南通启东·期末)Dennis didn’t feel like sleeping. He had gone to bed at the same time every night for as long as he could remember. He was tired of going to bed when his parents told him to. So one night, when fall seemed over, but it wasn’t yet winter, he decided he would stay up.
What Dennis didn’t realize is that staying awake at night is hard when your body needs to sleep. He tried everything he could think of to stop himself from falling asleep. He tried counting wolves (if counting sheep makes you sleepy, then counting wolves must surely do the opposite), but unluckily it made him even more tired. He started to think that it was the counting, and not the choice of animal, that made people sleepy.
Dennis was just about ready to give up when he heard a squeak (尖叫声) from his hamster (仓鼠) Charlie. He went over to Charlie’s cage, but it was empty. Dennis followed the sounds of squeaking until he found Charlie on the floor, looking behind the door. Dennis noticed that something back there was throwing things at Charlie! Balls, balls of paper, and even some stones were flying in Charlie’s direction, as he squeaked.
“What’s there, Charlie?” Dennis asked as he picked up the hamster and walked towards the door.
What he saw made him wonder if he had actually fallen asleep and not realized it.
“It’s a…it’s a rabbit,” he said. No bigger than Charlie (and no smaller), the rabbit wore a yellow shirt, a tiny pair of green pants, and a hat.
“Why are you throwing things at my hamster, rabbit?” asked Dennis.
“Why do you keep a vicious (凶猛的) hamster as a pet, human?” asked the rabbit. “Charlie is not vicious. More importantly, why are you in my room, rabbit?” asked Dennis.
“That is an interesting question, human.”
“My name is not ‘human’, it’s Dennis,” Dennis said angrily.
“I already know your name. And rabbits have names, too.”
Dennis didn’t say anything for a moment, and neither did the rabbit. It was an awkward (尴尬的) silence for everyone except Charlie who, as usual, had fallen asleep shortly after Dennis picked him up.
“Well, what is your name then?” asked Dennis.

Passage 1
(24-25八年级下·江苏泰州靖江·期末)Danny was just putting his cleats (训练鞋) into his locker when his teammate, Max, told him that Mr. Irving, the principal (校长) wanted to see him in the office.
He made his way to the office, wondering why. He was a quite good student, so it wasn’t his grades. Though, to be honest, he’d been making things a little worse, especially that last math test. But this was the first time the baseball team went into the state finals in 11 years and as the star pitcher (明星投手), Danny had helped a lot. Surely there is nothing that can’t be excused.
No more thinking, he stepped inside to find Mr. Irving, Coach Geller, and surprisingly, his mother was waiting for him and looked as if she had been crying. Uh, oh. He must really be in trouble.
Mr. Irving told the truth that Danny wouldn’t be able to play in the final. Coach Geller had left Danny’s name off the roster (候选名单) by accident, and once handed in, adding more was not allowed.
“We’re very sorry, Danny,” said Mr. Irving, “I have been trying to fix it, but so far, no luck.” Danny didn’t know what to say.
As the game began, Danny cheered for his team, having a mix of feelings as its score rose and fell. In the bottom of the ninth, Simon hit a winning run, making it certain that their team won. “No,” he said with the biggest smile of his life, “That was my win, and Max’s, and Simon’s too. Don’t you get it, Mom? That’s what it means to be part of a team. I helped get us to the final. And in my own way, I helped win it, too.”

(24-25八年级下·江苏苏州昆山、太仓、常熟、张家港四·期末)Luke lived with his grandma during the last summer holidays. He was interested in everything in his grandma’s house. One night, he quietly went into his grandma’s storeroom. She kept her special things there. He knew she did not like anyone to touch her treasures, especially her cup for skating. Luke walked around on tiptoe (脚尖) and happily felt the treasures one after another. He found the cup wasn’t there. “Where is it?” he thought to himself. He raised his head and found it! It was on the top of a shelf, but he still wanted to feel the cup again.
With the help of a ladder (梯子), Luke reached the cup. It was much heavier than it seemed. Luke lifted the cup and tried to get it down. While climbing down, Luke bumped his arm into the ladder. He couldn’t stand straight and fell down hard. The cup dropped from his hands and broke in half.
Luke was too nervous to feel the pain. He stood up quickly and felt heartbroken. He picked up the broken pieces with his shaking hands, put them back on the shelf and left the storeroom quickly. Grandma was watching TV in the living room. Luke went into his bedroom quietly so that his grandma wouldn’t notice him.
That night was so long. He couldn’t fall asleep till midnight. He woke up and looked at the clock many times. Time seemed to go much slower. Early in the morning, Luke bravely knocked on grandma’s door. He told Grandma about the broken cup. Grandma hugged Luke warmly and said, “That cup was given to me when I was only ten years old. I won the first prize in my skating competition.” Luke followed grandma to the storeroom. “I’m really sorry, grandma.” Luke said sadly. With a smile, grandma took down the broken glass cup and used glue to stick the broken pieces together. The cup was repaired, and it was like magic!
She continued, “When I was young, I once messed (弄乱) my uncle’s priceless painting. I was not as brave as you. I didn’t tell the truth at first. I couldn’t stop worrying about it for a week. Passage 3
(24-25八年级下·江苏苏州立达中学·期末)In the centre of the busy city, where skyscrapers kissed the clouds and people hurried about, there was a small park. It was an island of peace in the city center, a place where I, a high school boy, often went to after school.
One sunny afternoon, as I sat on a bench, my attention was drawn to a street performer preparing his act. He was a middle-aged man with a warm smile and eyes that shone with courage mixed with life’s wisdom. Placing his hat on the ground, he began to play the violin, each note filled with sad beauty that seemed to tell tales of his life’s journey.
I watched as the crowd passed by, most too preoccupied (心事重重) with their own thoughts to notice the soulful melodies that surrounded them. Suddenly, a coin would clink into the hat, but for the most part, the performer was overlooked.
Coming close to him when he took a break, I asked, “Don’t you ever feel disheartened when people don’t stop to listen?”
He looked at me with a gentle smile and replied. “Disheartened? Yes; there are moments. But I tell myself that my music is a personal expression, not just a performance for others.”
“Is it the money that keeps you going?” I asked, looking at the collection in his hat.
He smiled, “The money is not bad, but it’s not the driving force. I play because I’m crazy about music. Every note I make is part of me that I share with the world. Whether anyone listens or not, I stay true to my love for the art.”
His words struck a chord (和音) within me. Here was a person who was indifference (冷漠) of the world, but hold on to his pursuit (追求) of happiness. It was a powerful lesson in endurance (忍耐力) and self-worth.
As the sun set, painting the sky orange and pink, he continued his playing. This time, I listened with new ears. The music was no longer just a melody; it was the strength and spirit of humanity.
When it was finally time for me to head home, I placed a coin in his hat, not only as an act of charity, but as a respect for a man who had taught me a valuable life lesson: to follow one’s passion bravely even without an audience.

“Your father is optimistic. He dreams too much.” Lina stopped. She walked out, leaving Mei alone.
That night, Mei couldn’t sleep. She remembered her grandpa’s words: “Find the light in the dark, mei mei.”

Passage 2
(24-25八年级下·江苏镇江丹徒区·期末)One day, the children were walking by the fence along the top of the hill beside the railway line. On the hillside were many flowers, trees and rocks. Suddenly, they heard a noise. It was clear and slowly got louder

As she waited in line, Lena reached into her pocket —it was empty. Her heart sank. She forgot her money at home. Embarrassed, she turned to leave.
“Wait, young lady!” A gentle voice called out. An elderly man in a blue cap stood behind her. “Let me buy you a hot chocolate.” Before Lena could refuse, he smiled and added, “I have a granddaughter about your age. ”
Lena thanked him for his help, her cheeks warm. They sat at a small table by the window. The man introduced himself as Mr. Evans. He spoke softly about his garden, his old dog, and how he missed his granddaughter who lived abroad. Lena shared stories about her science project and her noisy brother. For fifteen minutes, the rainy world outside seemed to fade away.
When Lena finished her drink, Mr. Evans handed her his phone number. “Tell your mom an old man made sure you got home safe,” he winked.

Danny jumped out of his seat and rushed to the field to celebrate with his teammates, giving each other high-fives.
That night, as he told the story, his mother listened quietly and said, “You should have played. That was your win, and it was taken from you.”
“No,” he said with the biggest smile of his life, “That was my win, and Max’s, and Simon’s too. Don’t you get it, Mom? That’s what it means to be part of a team. I helped get us to the final. And in my own way, I helped win it, too.”

Luke walked around on tiptoe (脚尖) and happily felt the treasures one after another. He found the cup wasn’t there. “Where is it?” he thought to himself. He raised his head and found it! It was on the top of a shelf, but he still wanted to feel the cup again.
