Just as its name suggests, the paintings are made from sugar. They can be either regarded as works of art or eaten as desserts. In and around China’s southwestern Sichuan Province, it is usual to see some folk artists producing sugar paintings along the streets, in the parks and around the schools. The art of sugar painting goes back to the Ming Dynasty, about 400 to 600 years ago. At that time, the upper-class people used sugar paintings as offerings (祭品) to gods. Some common patterns were tigers, lions, dragons and so on. Later it became popular among the common people. In the Qing Dynasty, sugar painting became more popular. Many people made a living by making and selling sugar paintings as desserts. The patterns for sugar paintings included all kinds of things that people liked. Sugar painting is very different from the other forms of painting. First, the artist doesn’t use brushes, oil paints or paper to create paintings. Instead, the artist uses brown sugar or white sugar as the main material, a spoon and a shovel (铲子) as the tools, and a marble slab (大理石板) as the “paper”. When the painting is done, the artist uses a wooden stick to hold it. Second, the artist has to produce the work very quickly, since it’s nearly impossible to paint if the hot sugar cools down. Third, the sugar painting is finished in one stroke (笔画), so the artist should design a pattern and the order of stroke in mind before any action. And the artist must follow the order while making the painting, or he/ she will ruin it. To know the whole process very well, the painter has to practice hundreds of times in the first place. 24. In the Ming Dynasty, people used sugar paintings to ________. A. make their houses beautiful B. show respect (尊重) and love for gods C. celebrate important festivals D. make children happy 25. To get the pattern right, the sugar painting artist must ________. A. follow a certain order B. cut a pattern on the marble first C. paint slowly and carefully D. keep the sugar as hot as possible 26. The underlined word “suggests” in paragraph 1 has the closest meaning to “________”. A. 建议 B. 研究 C. 表明 D. 指导 27. What can we learn from the passage? A. Sugar paintings can only be seen in Sichuan. B. Sugar painting has a history of over 1,000 years. C. A sugar painting must be finished in one minute. D. It takes a lot of practice to become a great sugar painting artist. C London is a huge city. In its northern part sits a small garden cared for by Albert. Born in Italy, Albert grew up watching his grandfather plant tomatoes and learning from his grandfather. When he first moved to London, his gardening place was limited, so he had to choose to grow small plants outside his windows. That all changed a year ago when he moved to a house with an outdoor space. Even though it was small, he was thankful for this area and set to work, building a greenhouse where he planted beans, onions, chilies (辣椒) and so on. Using recycled plastic bottles as planters, Albert hung them on a wall, and everything else was grown in pots. Believe it or not, he was able to fit all of these in a shared balcony (阳台) that was only 16 by 26 feet. Albert’s first crop this summer included 30 kinds of vegetables. He got over 75 pounds of tomatoes from just 6 plants and his 17 kinds of chilies produced 22 pounds of hot peppers. He has not been to the vegetable market since last March! He even started to give the vegetables away to friends and neighbors, even putting up a sign outside his house asking people to take them for free. At present, his rooms seem to be filled with as many green plants as he has in the backyard! Many city gardeners became very interested in what he was doing. So he started a web page called Spicy Corner, where he shared his gardening tips. He got many city followers and hoped his viewers would also create small green gardens in the city. “City backyards and green areas help make the air cleaner and healthier for people. Gardening is really healthy, improves the joy of life, and helps green the planet,” Albert said. 28. What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. The life of his family. B. The condition of his gardening. C. The kinds of his vegetables. D. The experience of his growing up. 29. What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A. Albert had a good harvest. B. Albert was proud of his crop. C. Albert wanted to help local farmers. D. Albert was famous for his green food. 30. Why did Albert create Spicy Corner? A. To make people interested in his online products. B. To ask people to share their gardening experience. C. To teach people to plant more kinds of vegetables. D. To encourage people to grow plants in the city home. 31. Which words best describe Albert according to the passage? A. Honest and patient. B. Humorous and clever. C. Strict and hard-working. D. Creative and kind-hearted. Do you usually expect that everything is going well or do you usually think about the trouble and difficulties ahead? ②You may think whether you are an optimist or not depends on things around you. However, recent studies have shown that optimism (乐观主义) is 50% influenced by our genes (基因), 40% influenced by ourselves and 10% influenced by the environment around us. This is really good news, because it means we can work on the 40% to increase our levels of optimism. Then what can we do to achieve it? ③Studies have shown that taking part in interesting activities like singing, hanging out with friends, cooking with parents, will give off dopamine (多巴胺). You will feel happier and more active. At the same time, we can do more sports, because sports can also bring dopamine and keep us happy. ④On the other hand, we should do something to avoid bad feelings. Researchers also believe that bad feelings can break the immune system (免疫系统), which will make us feel uncomfortable and unhappy. For example, stress will cause the rise of blood pressure and blood sugar levels. But there are many ways that can help you reduce (减少) your stress. For example, you can take a deep breath. According to a study by the University of Kansas, smiling and taking a deep breath can help reduce your heart rate (心率) and lower your blood pressure when you are in stressful situations. That is to say, it reduces your stress. ⑤Do you still usually think about the trouble and difficulties ahead? Now you must have known what to do with it. 36. How does the writer lead into the topic? 【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. D 【解析】 【导语】本文介绍了中国传统民间艺术——糖画的历史、用途和制作特点。 【24题详解】 文中第二段“At that time, the upper-class people used sugar paintings as offerings to gods.”指出,明代人们用糖画作为祭品献给神明,以此表达对神明的尊重与敬爱。 【25题详解】 文中第三段“Third, the sugar painting is finished in one stroke, so the artist should design a pattern and the order of stroke in mind before any action. And the artist must follow the order while making the painting, or he/she will ruin it.”表明,糖画艺人必须遵循一定的笔画顺序,才能顺利完成图案。 【26题详解】 根据上下文“Just as its name suggests, the paintings are made from sugar.”,句意为“正如它的名字所表明的,这种画是用糖做的”,因此“suggest”在此处意为“表明”。 【27题详解】 文中第三段“To know the whole process very well, the painter has to practice hundreds of times in the first place.”表明,要成为一名优秀的糖画艺人需要大量练习。 C London is a huge city. 【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. He got over 75 pounds of tomatoes from just 6 plants and his 17 kinds of chilies produced 22 pounds of hot peppers.”可知,Albert有了一个好收成,故选A。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据“He got many city followers and hoped his viewers would also create small green gardens in the city.” D。 D On the afternoon of September 10th, Chinese smartphone maker Huawei officially launched (发布) the Mate XT, the world’s first mass-produced tri-fold (三折) smartphone in Shenzhen.
