For more than 1,500 years, the Silk Road was a network of many roads. It connected China to places like Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. It was named after silk, a famous Chinese product. But it carried more than just goods-it also carried ideas, cultures, and technologies.
The Silk Road began about 2,000 years ago. In the Han Dynasty, Emperor Wudi sent Zhang Qian to Central Asia to find friends to fight against some tribes (部落). Zhang Qian’s trip took 13 years. When he returned, he told everyone about the lands he saw. Soon, trade started. China sent out silk, porcelain (瓷器), and tea, and bought horses, glass, and spices from other countries.
The Silk Road was also a road for knowledge. Buddhism (佛教) came to China from India. Chinese paper-making went west. Music, art, and new foods also traveled along this road.
However, traveling was very dangerous. Traders had to cross huge deserts and climbed high mountains. To stay safe, they traveled in large groups with camels (骆驼). Rest stops along the way grew into busy cities, where people from different cultures met.
Later, sea routes became easier and safer, so the Silk Road was used less. But today, China’s “Belt and Road” project is to build new connections between countries.
The Silk Road teaches us an important lesson: when people and cultures share with each other, everyone benefits. It wasn’t just a road for trade-it was a bridge for human culture.

Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, and when he was born, there was no one to look after him except an old nurse and a doctor. They didn’t care about him.
Oliver’s mother arrived at the workhouse the night before she gave birth to her son. She asked to see her baby and then died. No one knew where she came from and who she was. But the doctor noticed that she had no wedding ring on her finger.
When the doctor left and the old nurse dressed him, Oliver cried loudly. He was an orphan (孤儿) and he was all alone. There was no one to look after baby Oliver at the workhouse so he was sent to an orphanage (孤儿院), with little food or love.
When he was nine, Oliver was a small pale thin child. ________ and that was probably why he managed to reach the age of nine. The housekeeper of the orphanage was rude and hard. She often beat Oliver and locked him up. This was usually for saying he was hungry.
One day the housekeeper was surprised by a visit from Mr Bumble, the head of the government.
“Oliver Twist is nine years old now. He’s too old to stay here at the orphanage with you,” Mr Bumble said. “So, we will move him to the workhouse. I have come here myself to take him there.”
As soon as they arrived at the workhouse, Mr Bumble took Oliver to meet the Board (董事会). The Board was made up of nine or ten fat gentlemen sitting around a table.
“Boy,” said one of the fat gentlemen to Oliver, “You are an orphan and you must be thankful for the charity of the town. You are here to learn a subject and you will begin your work tomorrow morning. Goodnight.”
And poor little Oliver was sent to sleep on a hard cold bed in a room full of other boys, to be ready for work the next morning.

①Zhongshan Eye Center in China has made a big step in eye surgery (手术). On June 23, doctors at the center completed the world’s first remote (远程的) surgery on animals. They used a 5G robot developed by their own team. A medical team in Haikou controlled the surgery, showing that eye care is possible for almost all patients far away.
②The main part of the robot is a special arm, which allows careful control. In traditional eye treatment, doctors often put medicine directly into the eye area with their hands. But everyone’s hands shake a little, and this small shake makes it hard to do the work perfectly. The robot can do the same tasks as doctors’ hands, but without any shaking, making the surgery safer and better.
③Another advantage is that even young doctors can do eye surgery well with the 5G robot’s help. Professor Lin, the leader of the medical team, said that it takes at least 10 years of practice to become a skilled eye doctor. But with the robot, young doctors can reach a high level, just like experienced doctors.
④The third important point is that 5G technology makes it possible for doctors to treat patients far away. It lets eye doctors get clear and timely pictures of the patient’s eye, which is greatly helpful to remote surgery.
⑤However, more research and tests are still needed to make sure the technology is safe for humans. “If all goes well, 5G remote eye surgery will be available to humans within half a year,” Lin said. The team will keep working hard to help develop remote medicine and improve medical care in China.
32. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The 5G robot. B. Zhongshan Eye Center
C. The 5G technology. D. A medical team in Haikou.
33. According to the passage, how does the 5G robot help to improve the eye surgery?
①By making surgery much faster and cheaper.
②By doing the surgery without any shaking.
③By helping young doctors get better skills.
④By inventing new medicine for the patients.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①④ D. ③④
34. How does Professor Lin feel about the future of 5G robot?
A. Worried. B. Surprised. C. Doubtful(质疑的). D. Hopeful.
35. Which is the best structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

Our school forum (网络论坛) is starting a discussion on “Humans and Nature”. How should we get along with nature? Should we protect nature completely or believe technology can help us better? Here are some students’ opinions on it.
Lin Tao (13, Grade 7)—Be Nature’s Guardians (守护者) 8:35 p.m. 19 Sep.
Nature isn’t just there for us to use—it has its own value (价值). We should protect forests, oceans, and animals for our future. We can build more nature reserves (保护区) and cut down pollution. It’s also important to learn to enjoy nature and live peacefully with it, not just take from it. Small actions like saving water can help a lot if everyone does them.
Wang Mei (14, Grade 8)—Technology Helps the Environment 8:45 p.m. 19 Sep.
We can’t give up modern life and go back to a simple one. Instead, we should use technology to fix environmental problems. For example, we can develop clean energy like solar (太阳能的) power to take the place of coal and oil. Technology caused some of these problems, but it can also solve them. Humans can’t live without good natural environment, so we need smart ideas and new inventions.
Zhang Jian (15, Grade 9)—Balance Protection and Progress 10 minutes ago
We need natural resources (资源) to develop, and we have to use them in a proper way. For example, we can cut down trees, but we should also plant new ones. We can build cities, but we need to leave green space for animals. It’s not about choosing between protection and development—it’s about finding a wise middle way.
41. Does Lin Tao think small actions can help to protect nature?
_____________________________________________________________________________
42. According to Zhang Jian, what should we do after cutting down trees?
_____________________________________________________________________________
43. What is the common idea in all three students’ opinions?
_____________________________________________________________________________
44. What do you think of their opinions and why? Choose one to reply (about 30 words)
_____________________________________________________________________________
【答案】41. Yes, he does./Yes.
42. We should plant new ones/trees.
43.
Nature is important/valuable to humans, and we should try our best to protect it./They all care about nature and they all think up some ways (ideas) to protect nature/the environment.(答案不唯一,言之成理即可)
44. I prefer Lin Tao’s idea. Because Nature is our home. If we don’t protect it, our future will be in danger. Small actions are important to make a change.(答案不唯一,言之成理即可)

Did you know your brain makes over 35,000 decisions every day? From choosing breakfast to picking out clothes, we are always making choices. But sometimes, even a simple decision can become a problem. Jake wants to exercise, he might ask himself: “Should I start now?” “Can I do it later?” Before he finds the answers, it’s too late—and he ends up feeling tired and upset. This is called decision fatigue (决策疲劳).
Decision fatigue happens when too many choices make your brain tired. It can bring several problems. You may find it hard to think clearly. Small things, like replying to an email, can make you stressed. You might also get angry easily, even in situations that usually don’t bother (困扰) you.
Luckily, there are helpful ways to deal with it. In fact, you don’t need to make too many decisions. One way is to keep some daily choices the same. For example, wear similar clothes every day, or eat a healthy breakfast you already like. Another way is to let others help you decide sometimes. When planning weekend activities, you can ask a friend to pick the place or time to meet instead of always deciding by yourself. This helps to free your mind.
By using these ways, you can save energy for more important things. You will have more time and focus (专注) on choices that truly matter. So, start with small steps and you can feel more relaxed and be in control day by day.

A. Worried. B. Surprised. C. Doubtful(质疑). D. Hopeful.
