三、阅读理解
Toward the evening, some more officers came to the house. Mary heard one of them say, “Everyone is dead. The dangerous sickness called cholera (霍乱) has killed them all.” Mary knew that cholera was a very bad disease. In some years, many people died from it.
Then one of the officers opened the door of the hut (小屋). He saw Mary.
“The child isn’t dead,” he shouted. “She’s here.”
He told Mary that her parents and all the servants were dead. Mary did not say anything. She did not know what to think.
“I know I should be sad,” she thought, “but I am not very sad. Maybe it’s because I didn’t see my parents often. They were too busy to spend time with me.”
In the days that followed, Mary was like a doll without a home, passed from one place to another. The air was thick with grief and confusion, and she felt a strange numbness inside her. She did not cry, nor did she ask questions.
For a short time, Mary went to live with a man who worked in a church and his wife. He was a clergyman. His name was Mr. Crawford, and his main job was to lead people in prayer or host weddings in the church. They had a son, Basil. Mary hated him, and he hated her.
Mary was not happy living with the Crawfords. Then one day, Mr. Crawford said, “Tomorrow you will leave India, Mary, and go to England. You have an uncle there, Archibald Craven. He lives at Misselthwaite Manor in the country.”
Mary traveled from India to England by ship. When she arrived in London, a lady called Mrs. Medlock met her. She was Archibald Craven’s housekeeper.
“What a plain child,” Mrs. Medlock thought. “And what an unhappy child. I don’t know how she will fit in at Misselthwaite Manor.”
Mary thought, “I don’t like this woman, and I am sure she doesn’t like me. I won’t be happy at Misselthwaite Manor, I’m sure.” As the ship pulled away from the shores of India, Mary stood at the rail, watching the distant land fade into the mist. She carried with her the echoes of a lost childhood and a heart that had not yet learned to hope.

Camping is a fantastic outdoor activity that lets us enjoy nature. Last Saturday, my classmates and I went camping in Green Hill Park. We met at the school gate at 8:00 a.m. and took a bus there. It took us about one hour to arrive. The air was fresh and we heard birds singing.
First, we put up three tents near a small river. Then we collected dry leaves and sticks to make a campfire. In the afternoon, some students went fishing by the river. Others flew kites on the grass. The kites looked like colorful birds in the wind. Although we didn't catch fish, everyone felt relaxed.
In the evening, we sat around the campfire. We sang songs, told funny stories and roasted marshmallows. They were sweet and delicious. At night, we slept in the tents and saw many stars in the dark sky. The next morning, we packed our things and cleaned the area. Before leaving, we took a group photo together. It was really an unforgettable outdoor experience.
