Zhou loves to make it in the shape of animals, because there is a great space to play, “Even when you make the same animal, you can make it differently-cute or serious, strong or thin.” Zhou said. This year, when making tigers, he tried to show the spirit of the “king of all beasts”.

“I would be happier if I could be a bit larger,” said Alice, “Three inches (1 inch=2.54cm) is a terrible height for a child to be.”

Alice stayed there by herself and looked at the mushroom for a minute. She tried to decide which side was which, because it was round.
At last Alice took off a bit with each hand. “Which is which?” She had some in her right hand from the right side of the mushroom. And then she had some in her left hand from the left side of the mushroom. She tasted a small piece from the right hand to see how it worked. The next thing she knew, she was getting smaller! ①Do you know DNA? Every living thing has DNA, so scientists can use it to identify (识别) living things. They leave bits of DNA behind wherever they go. DNA left behind like this is “environmental” DNA, or eDNA. Scientists can use it to tell what kinds of animals are in a certain place.
②Testing eDNA isn’t a new idea. Most of the time, ▲ . But now, two teams of scientists have found a new way of identifying animals in an area by testing eDNA in the air.
③Both teams chose to test in zoos because wild animals were not easy to find in the area. One team collected samples (样本) from different places at Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo, and the other team did it at Hamerton Zoo Park in the UK.
④Interestingly, both teams used vacuums (真空吸尘器) and fans to get small bits of eDNA in the air. After collecting samples, they went back to the lab and compared (比较) their samples with examples of DNA from different animals. Therefore, the scientists were able to identify many different animals at the zoos.
⑤Both teams were able to track different animals, even endangered ones, without interfering with them by using this new method. They were so excited about their new way that they put their results of the test together and wrote a paper together in order to invite more scientists to join them.
⑥However, it’s still unknown if this new way will work out fine or not in the wild world. If scientists know where the wild animals live, they can do a better job of protecting them.
⑦So the next step is to find out how to take this new method into the wild world.

“Are you happy with your size now?” asked the Caterpillar.
“I would be happier if I could be a bit larger,” said Alice, “Three inches (1 inch=2.54cm) is a terrible height for a child to be.”
This made the Caterpillar angry. “It is a good height!” He was three inches high.
“But I don’t like it,” Alice answered sadly. “You get happy so easily.”
“You’ll get used to (习惯于) it soon,” the Caterpillar said. Alice waited for him to speak again. Before he did, he yawned (打哈欠) and shook (晃动) his body. Then he got down from the mushroom (蘑菇) and started to move away. He went on, “One side will make you grow taller and the other will make you grow shorter.
“One side of what? The other side of what?” Alice thought.
“Of the mushroom,” said the Caterpillar just as if (好像) Alice had asked the question aloud. In another minute, the Caterpillar was out of sight.
That made her so afraid that she started to taste the other from her left hand at once. Now she grew as tall as the trees in the woods!
(Adapted from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland)

【导语】本文是一篇故事节选,改编自《爱丽丝梦游仙境》,讲述了爱丽丝与毛毛虫对话后,通过蘑菇调整自己身高的经历。
【32题详解】
根据第二段爱丽丝的话“I would be happier if I could be a bit larger”可知,她希望自己再高一点儿,对应选项C“She wished she could be a bit taller”。
【33题详解】
原句“the Caterpillar was out of sight”意为“毛毛虫从视线中消失了”,其中“sight”指“视力所及的范围”。选项B“The farthest place you can see”(你能看到的最远范围)符合此意。
【34题详解】
根据“She tasted a small piece from the right hand…she was getting smaller”可知,右手(即蘑菇右侧)的蘑菇使她变小。结合图示,右侧对应序号②。

36. Which sentence can be put into ▲ ?
A. scientists had no idea of how to look for eDNA
B. scientists couldn’t agree on how to look for eDNA
C. scientists looked for eDNA in water
