Ni Jiaojiao is made of mud (泥). It takes more than 10 steps to make. The key is kneading (捏) the mud with your hands. You can knead it into anything you like, from animals to plants. Often, it uses traditional cultural elements that have good meanings.

Zhou loves to make it in the shape of animals, because there is a great space to play, “Even when you make the same animal, you can make it differently-cute or serious, strong or thin.” Zhou said. This year, when making tigers, he tried to show the spirit of the “king of all beasts”.

“I would be happier if I could be a bit larger,” said Alice, “Three inches (1 inch=2.54cm) is a terrible height for a child to be.”

“But I don’t like it,” Alice answered sadly. “You get happy so easily.”
“You’ll get used to (习惯于) it soon,” the Caterpillar said. Alice waited for him to speak again. Before he did, he yawned (打哈欠) and shook (晃动) his body. “One side of what? The other side of what?” Alice thought.
“Of the mushroom,” said the Caterpillar just as if (好像) Alice had asked the question aloud. In another minute, the Caterpillar was out of sight.
Alice stayed there by herself and looked at the mushroom for a minute. She tried to decide which side was which, because it was round.
At last Alice took off a bit with each hand. “Which is which?” She had some in her right hand from the right side of the mushroom. And then she had some in her left hand from the left side of the mushroom. She tasted a small piece from the right hand to see how it worked. The next thing she knew, she was getting smaller! That made her so afraid that she started to taste the other from her left hand at once. Now she grew as tall as the trees in the woods!

①Do you know DNA? Every living thing has DNA, so scientists can use it to identify (识别) living things. They leave bits of DNA behind wherever they go. DNA left behind like this is “environmental” DNA, or eDNA. Scientists can use it to tell what kinds of animals are in a certain place.
②Testing eDNA isn’t a new idea. Most of the time, ▲ . But now, two teams of scientists have found a new way of identifying animals in an area by testing eDNA in the air.
③Both teams chose to test in zoos because wild animals were not easy to find in the area. One team collected samples (样本) from different places at Denmark’s Copenhagen Zoo, and the other team did it at Hamerton Zoo Park in the UK.
④Interestingly, both teams used vacuums (真空吸尘器) and fans to get small bits of eDNA in the air. After collecting samples, they went back to the lab and compared (比较) their samples with examples of DNA from different animals. Therefore, the scientists were able to identify many different animals at the zoos.
⑤Both teams were able to track different animals, even endangered ones, without interfering with them by using this new method. They were so excited about their new way that they put their results of the test together and wrote a paper together in order to invite more scientists to join them.
⑥However, it’s still unknown if this new way will work out fine or not in the wild world. If scientists know where the wild animals live, they can do a better job of protecting them.
⑦So the next step is to find out how to take this new method into the wild world.

Dear Tom,
Winter vacation is coming. We are all making our plans. I’m sorry that I can’t accept your invitation because I have already promised to go to Chengdu with my good friend Peter.
Peter is taller and more outgoing than me. He is as friendly as me and always ready to help others. In Chengdu, we plan to climb mountains, go skiing, and visit museums. Besides, we will enjoy delicious local snacks. It must be a wonderful trip. Would you like to go with us? I believe you will have a great time and we can enjoy the trip together. Looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Nick
