High school was a hard time for me in the beginning because I had just moved to a small town and knew basically no one. I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to tryout (选拔) for the school’s team because I didn’t know anyone. One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets on the school playground to kill time. The coach Mr. Colbath had been watching me make various baskets and was pretty impressed with my moves.
He came up to me and asked me who had taught me to play like that. I told him that my dad had taught me how to play basketball. He asked me if he would see me at the tryout on Friday, but I said no and told him why. He told me to have a try because I played very well and would maybe make some friends on the court (球场). After thinking for a few minutes. I finally decided to have a try.
On the day of the tryout, the coach came, found me and helped me practise before the tryout. He helped me a lot and I did very well at the tryout and many members of the team were quite impressed. I did make the team and over the next few years the coach helped me both on and off the court. He helped me do my maths which I had such a difficult time with and he even taught me how to live independently.
I will never forget Mr. Colbath. He really inspired me and changed my life. I would not be the person that I am today if he had not taken such an interest in me when I was in high school.

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career (职业) in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put the vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly the result of the growing digital space, as the Internet has made it much easier to reach audiences around the world without people having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios. Now, anyone with a camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people communicating with their fans about everyday lives.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame (声誉) and money. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm (热情), and is always a learning experience. And that’s enough for him.
8. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers?
A. Vloggers are much richer than others.
B. Anyone with a camera will surely become a star.
C. The Internet makes it convenient to become vloggers.
D. There is too much competition in the traditional business.
9. What can we infer from the Paragraph 5?
A. A vlogger cannot earn fame or money.
B. Only a few vloggers can be successful.
C. Dreams will always remain as dreams.
D. People seldom see the bright side of being a vlogger.
10. What do young people like David do on the Internet?
A. Mix jobs with hobbies. B. Become an online hit.
C. Hold running races. D. Learn from others.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Steps to be a famous vlogger. B. The dangers of online careers.
C. Different ways to use the Internet. D. Young Britons’ changing dream jobs.

A new scientific study suggests that global warming is changing the rotation (旋转) of the Earth and is also increasing the length of day at an unusual rate. The speed of change is higher than at any point in the 20th century, they found.
Here’s what’s happening: As the planet heats up, ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting, and this water from the polar regions is flowing into the world’s oceans at the equator (赤道), which is changing the Earth’s shape and slowing its speed of rotation. Thus, as the Earth is turning more slowly, the days are getting longer, although only minimally, on the order of a few milliseconds a day. But it’s possibly enough to affect GPS, communications and even space travel.
This isn’t the first study to make such a statement: A 2021 study found that masses of melting ice around the world — a result of rising temperatures from the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料) — caused the location of the North and South Poles to move eastward since the mid-1990s.
Climate scientist Vincent Humphrey of the University of Zurich, who was not part of the 2021 study nor the new research, previously explained how more water at the equator affects how fast the Earth spins (旋转). He compared it to a ‘skater spinning on the ice’. “If they hold their arms out, their spinning is slower, but if they bring them into their body, then they speed up.” The same thing happens to the Earth.
Another cause of the Earth’s rotational slowdown is tidal friction (潮汐摩擦), which is caused by the moon, according to a statement from ETH Zurich. However, the new research comes to a surprising conclusion: “If humans continue to produce more greenhouse gases and the Earth warms up accordingly, this would finally have a greater influence on the Earth’s rotational speed than the effect of the Moon, which has determined the increase in the length of the day for billions of years.”
12. What does the underlined word “melting” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Turning into water. B. Falling down quickly.
C. Growing larger in size. D. Moving around fast.
13. Why is Vincent Humphrey mentioned?
A. To show Earth’s rotation is similar to skating.
B. To make the findings more understandable.
C. To tell people how fast the Earth spins.
D. To prove his previous finding.
14. What are people expected to do according to the last paragraph?
A. Find out more causes of the Earth’s rotational slowdown.
B. Adapt themselves to the longer days in the future.
C. Try to decrease the effect of the Moon on the Earth.
D. Take measures to reduce greenhouse gases.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Ice Sheets Change the Earth’s Shape.
B. The Moon Speeds up the Earth’s Rotation.
C. Global Warming Makes Days Longer.
D. Tidal Friction Affects the Location of Poles.

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get full marks. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for the test.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have the test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently. “The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said. “So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down. Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White.
After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary scored 100 percent in the spelling test!” Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary — the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. He had spelled it wrong.
“What should I do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master of spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back.”
Staring at the red sign “100%” which was written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him — we ought to be an honest person.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Slowly, Peter raised his hand.

He helped me do my maths which I had such a difficult time with and he even taught me how to live independently.

C 9. B 10. A 11. D
根据第三段中“This change is undoubtedly the result of the growing digital space, as the Internet has made it much easier to reach audiences around the world without people having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.(这种变化无疑是数字空间不断发展的结果,因为互联网让人们无需以传统方式进入演艺行业,就能更容易地接触到世界各地的观众)”可知,互联网让成为视频博主这件事变得更加方便可行。
根据第五段中“However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame (声誉) and money. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line.(然而,人们看到的只是成为视频博主光鲜的一面,他们没有注意到,只有成功的博主才能收获声誉和财富。每有一个成功的博主,就有上百个博主永远无法走出起点)”可知,成为视频博主并非易事,数百人中只有个别人才能成功,说明只有少数视频博主能够获得成功。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“…some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club...His job allows him to express his enthusiasm (热情)…(……一些年轻人选择的职业不一定能为他们带来名气,但能让他们充分利用互联网分享自己的爱好。例如,年轻的以色列人大卫·莱肖经营着一家名为“完赛者俱乐部”的企业……他的工作让他能够表达自己的热情……)”可知,大卫这类年轻人会在互联网上将工作和爱好结合在一起。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据原文第一段“Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career (职业) in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.(25年前,大多数英国年轻人想要从事法律职业、成为医生,如果他们足够有创造力,会选择从事唱歌。但如今情况不同了。)”以及全文内容可知,本文主要介绍的是英国年轻人梦想职业发生的变化。

A 13. B 14. D 15. C
根据第二段“As the planet heats up, ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are melting, and this water from the polar regions is flowing into the world’s oceans at the equator(随着地球升温,格陵兰岛和南极洲的冰盖正在melting,来自极地的这些水流入赤道附近的全球海洋)”可知,冰盖只有转化为水才会流动,因此melting的含义是“融化,变成水”。
根据第四段“Climate scientist Vincent Humphrey of the University of Zurich...previously explained how more water at the equator affects how fast the Earth spins (旋转). He compared it to a ‘skater spinning on the ice’. ‘If they hold their arms out, their spinning is slower, but if they bring them into their body, then they speed up.’ The same thing happens to the Earth.(苏黎世大学气候科学家文森特·汉弗莱……此前解释了赤道区域更多的水如何影响地球旋转速度。他将其比作‘冰上旋转的滑冰运动员’。‘如果运动员张开手臂,旋转速度就会变慢,如果把手臂并入身体,旋转速度就会加快’。地球也发生着同样的过程)”)可知,文森特用生活中通俗易懂的例子类比抽象的原理,让这项研究的结论更容易被读者理解,因此文中提到他是为了让研究发现更易懂。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“If humans continue to produce more greenhouse gases and the Earth warms up accordingly, this would finally have a greater influence on the Earth’s rotational speed than the effect of the Moon, which has determined the increase in the length of the day for billions of years.(如果人类继续排放更多温室气体,地球随之持续变暖,最终它对地球自转速度的影响会超过月球的影响,月球数十亿年来一直决定日长的增加)”可知,人类持续排放温室气体将会带来超出自然原有规律的不良影响,因此作者呼吁人们采取措施减少温室气体排放。
根据第一段“A new scientific study suggests that global warming is changing the rotation (旋转) of the Earth and is also increasing the length of day at an unusual rate.(一项新科学研究表明,全球变暖正在改变地球的自转速度,还会以异常的速度延长日长)”并结合全文内容可知,本文围绕全球变暖导致地球自转减慢、日长增加展开介绍,因此最合适的标题是“全球变暖让日长变得更长”。

Should China Cut Space Budget to Solve Earth Problems?
Good afternoon, everyone.
From my perspective, China should never cut the budget for space exploration. Firstly, many technologies we use daily, from weather forecasting satellites to GPS navigation, come from space research. These technologies directly help solve problems like natural disaster prevention and food production. Secondly, space exploration pushes us to develop clean energy and new materials that can benefit our environment right here on Earth. What’s more, space exploration represents human’s pursuit of the unknown, which brings long-term benefits that can’t be measured immediately. We don’t have to choose between solving earth problems and exploring space — they support each other.
Thank you !

Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’t score 100 percent in the test. I misspelled a word.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper. “I spelled ‘contribution’ with ‘s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’. Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly in a test.”
Mr. White smiled at Peter. “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.” Peter looked around and found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example to all of us. We are all proud of you, and you deserve this prize,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever.
