Chatbots (聊天机器人) are now used as teachers and helpers every day. Now, they have a new job: salesmen.
As chatbots become adbots (广告机器人), the future of AI and ad industries is at risk. For AI companies, ads help them make money from their expensive tools that most people use for free. For the ad industry, adbots may solve a big problem: How will ads work if users stop using traditional search engines (引擎)? A new kind of marketing is coming.
Most big AI companies are trying this. OpenAI is testing ads in ChatGPT. Google has put ads in its search engine’s AI Mode (模式). Microsoft also uses them in Copilot.
These tests are small now. ChatGPT shows ads in only about 1% of talks. But the number will grow.
Google and OpenAI have different plans. Most ads in Google’s AI Mode come right after users ask questions, like a normal search engine. But ChatGPT is different. Less than half of its ads are in the first reply, and nearly one-third appear after the tenth talk. “This is not search. This is a new kind of advertisement,” says Harel Amir.
