She kept this thought in mind 8 while doing her experiments late into the evening. Her way of working was serious and 9 , always step by step. To find out how a lunar eclipse happens, she placed simple objects in her room, creating a small model of the solar system. You talk happily without paying attention to others’ conversations. That’s because selective (选择性的) attention is helping you. Selective attention is an amazing ability in our brain. It allows people to choose and focus on (专注于) something in the environment. At the same time, it can filter out (过滤) unnecessary information, so people can focus on one conversation in a crowded place. But how does selective attention work? Researchers from Columbia University did an experiment to study it. The result shows that the brain is selective about the sounds it hears. When a person listens to someone talking, their brain waves (波) change to pick out the features of the speaker’s voice and filter out other voices. To further understand how selective attention works, the researchers studied two parts of the brain’s listening centre: Heschl’s gyrus (HG) and the superior temporal gyrus (STG) . Information from the ears reaches HG first, passes through it and arrives at STG later. In the study, they found the following facts: in HG area, every voice is treated the same way. That is to say, HG doesn’t prefer one voice or another. But in STG area, it’s possible to choose one speaker’s voice and make it louder. The whole process (过程) only takes 150 milliseconds and it happens immediately to a listener. As a result, people can focus on one voice when there are many other conversations around. “Today’s study is quite important. We want to better understand how the brain helps us to hear so well, as well as create technologies that help people,” said Dr. Mesgarani, the leader of the researchers. With the help of the finding, speech recognition technologies have been improved. The researchers have already developed, a new kind of hearing aid that can help collect information more correctly. It could make one speaker’s voice louder over another. They also plan to study more about HG and STG activity, in situations that have more speakers. 29.What can selective attention help people do according to the passage? A.Choose where to talk. B.Hear more in a conversation C.Forget unnecessary information. D.Focus on one voice in a noisy place. 30.What will the researchers most probably study in the future? A.How to improve listening B.How the listening centre works. C.How to make a better hearing aid. D.How HG and STG protect each other. 31.What’s the best title for the passage? A.A Great Ability in Brain B.A New Study on Technologies C.A Key to Reducing Noise D.A Way to Make Conversation 【答案】29.D 30.B 31.A 【导语】本文介绍了大脑中的选择性注意力这一神奇能力,解释了它的作用、工作原理,以及相关研究和应用前景。 【详解】29.根据第二段“At the same time, it can filter out unnecessary information, so people can focus on one conversation in a crowded place.”可知,选择性注意力能帮助人们在嘈杂环境中过滤无关信息,专注于某一个声音。 30.根据最后一段“They also plan to study more about HG and STG activity, in situations that have more speakers.” C When 14-year-old Emily Brown from London first arrived in Lianyungang as an exchange student, she felt completely lost. “The food was so different, the language sounded like music I couldn’t understand, and I missed my mom’s cooking terribly,” she recalls. Like many exchange students, she experienced what scientists call “culture shock”—a feeling of confusion and anxiety when facing a new and unfamiliar environment. However, instead of hiding in her room, Emily decided to face the challenge head-on. She started by learning to cook local dishes with her host family. “The first time I tried to make dumplings, they looked more like little boats than proper dumplings,” she laughs. “But my host mother, Mrs. Wang, never laughed at me. She just smiled and showed me how to fold the dough again and again.” Gradually, Emily began to discover the beauty of Lianyungang. She visited the Huaguo Mountain, where she was fascinated by the stories of the Monkey King. She walked along the seaside, collecting colorful shells and watching fishermen bring in their daily catch. She even joined a local calligraphy club, where she learned to write Chinese characters with a brush. “The most important thing I’ve learned is that different doesn’t mean wrong,” Emily says. “In the UK, we usually finish all the food on our plates to show we enjoyed the meal. But in China, my host family often left a little food to show they were full and satisfied. At first, I was confused, but now I understand that both are just different ways of being polite.” Professor Zhang Wei, who studies cultural exchange at Lianyungang Normal University, says Emily’s experience is valuable. “What Emily did is exactly what we hope all young people can do—embrace differences with an open mind and a brave heart. In today’s globalized world, this ability is more important than ever.” By the end of her six-month stay, Emily could make dumplings that looked almost as good as Mrs. Wang’s, and she gave a speech in Chinese at her school’s farewell party. “I came here as a stranger,” she said, “but I’m leaving as part of a family.” 32.How did Emily feel when she first arrived in Lianyungang? A.Excited and curious. B.Confused and anxious. C.Angry and disappointed. D.Tired and sleepy. 33.What did Emily do to deal with her difficulties? A.She stayed in her room most of the time. B.She called her mom for help every day. C.She actively learned about local culture. D.She asked to change to a different host family. 34.What does the underlined word “embrace” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean? A.refuse B.accept C.remember D.protect 35.What lesson can we learn from Emily’s story? A.East or west, home is best. B.When in Rome, do as the Romans do. C.Different cultures can enrich our lives. D.Learning Chinese is too difficult. 第一段最后一句“...experienced what scientists call ‘culture shock’—a feeling of confusion and anxiety...”表明,Emily初到连云港时感到困惑和焦虑。 33.第二段“...instead of hiding in her room, Emily decided to face the challenge head-on. She started by learning to cook local dishes...”以及第三段提到的参观花果山、加入书法俱乐部等经历可知,她积极学习当地文化来应对困难。 34.第五段句子“...embrace differences with an open mind and a brave heart...” D Nobody wants to buy an expensive telescope and then aimlessly scan the stars trying to find an object. Help is needed. Thankfully, there is an app for that. Celestron is a leader in the world of telescopes and its StarSense Explorer app and dock (底座) have been designed to run on the StarSense Explorer telescopes. The free StarSense Explorer app (compatible with iOS and Android) uses information based on your exact location and time to tell you which stars or planets can be seen in the night sky (cloud-dependent, of course). Mount the phone into the StarSense Explorer dock attached to the telescope and choose your observation target (目标). A bracket (支架) will hold the phone over a mirror on the dock so that star patterns can reflect off the mirror and into the phone’s camera. StarSense Explorer processes (处理) the information and your telescope will find your target. As well as locating your target StarSense Explorer holds detailed information about your chosen object. Listen to an audio presentation while you observe, or read the available data. The StarSense Explorer app will even give you observing tips on how to get the best view. StarSense Explorer is the only astronomy app to use plate solving technology to find its target and it claims a typical pointing accuracy (目标指示精度) of as little as 0.25°. Used by professional observatories, and even orbiting satellites, plate solving is the process of extracting (提取) star pattern data in images and matching the star pattern within the image to its inside database (数据库) to work out a telescope’s pointing position. StarSense Explorer uses the smartphone’s camera as its “eye” and the phone’s processing power as its “brain”. Plate solving would normally require specialised technology, such as sensitive imaging camera, lens and astronomical software, all at great cost. The StarSense Explorer app is free and compatible with StarSense Explorer telescopes, starting from £189.99. If you’re ready to take a deeper dive into astronomy, Celestron’s StarSense Explorer technology will make a fine companion. You can discover more about StarSense Explorer technology at www.celestron.com. Catch up with Celestron at the New Science Live show between 12-14 October to learn more about StarSense Explorer. Tools that have risen sharply in popularity since late 2022 are changing the way people create content. AI can help jumpstart a person’s creativity by offering countless ideas, almost with a click of the mouse. Some writers, musicians, and other artists are experimenting with AI as a tool and seeing advantages. They may use it as a source of feedback (反馈) on their work. Visual artist Matt Saunders told the Harvard Gazette newspaper, “We should be thankful to be challenged and knocked out of our habits and comfort zones!” Kevin Baragona is the founder and chief executive officer of DeepAI in San Francisco, California. It’s one of several AI platforms that people can use to generate (生成) artworks or writing in many different styles. He says it is like a personal streaming platform that creates movies just for the user. “And the same thing with music,” he adds. “We’ll generate music just for you. It’s going to be pretty cool.” Not everyone is happy about AI’s introduction into artistic fields, though. Some artists and writers object to their work being used to train AI models without their permission. Some have argued that AI-generated content isn’t real art. When a human artist creates, they express their personal thoughts, experiences, and emotions. AI models cannot express those things because they are not self-aware, say AI experts. Anousha Syed is a Canadian AI trainer and illustrator. She told the Guardian, “AI doesn’t look at art and generate its own. It copies everyone’s, then turns it into something else.” Cuban-American musician and composer Yosvany Terry says, “When you hear those compositions by AI, they lack (缺乏) surprise, emotion, and even silence.” This has also led many people to question whether AI art can truly be considered “original” (独创的). If an AI-generated piece is heavily influenced by thousands of pre-existing works, who is the true author—the artist who programmed the AI, the machine itself, or the creators of the works the AI learned from? In the end, AI in art represents both an exciting area and a significant challenge for the art world. As people get used to AI and form guidelines for its use, we might become more welcoming about its place in art. Just stay up-to-date with the latest developments and rules, and remember that AI is a tool, not a replacement (替代) for human creativity. Unlike many people, she refused 6 unscientific ideas about events like lunar eclipses (月食). “I must see the truth 7 my own eyes,” she told herself. She kept this thought in mind 8 while doing her experiments late into the evening. Her way of working was serious and 9 , always step by step. To find out how a lunar eclipse happens, she placed simple objects in her room, creating a small model of the solar system. She moved a round table, a lamp, and a mirror slowly 10 the movements of the Earth, Sun, and Moon, demonstrating the cause of the eclipse. Through this simple but clever model, she explained 11 sunlight is shaded during this event, making a complex idea easy to understand. Her important 12 to science was realized mainly through writing. B In a noisy restaurant, you can still hear your friend’s voice clearly. A.A Great Ability in Brain B.A New Study on Technologies C.A Key to Reducing Noise D.A Way to Make Conversation C When 14-year-old Emily Brown from London first arrived in Lianyungang as an exchange student, she felt completely lost. D Nobody wants to buy an expensive telescope and then aimlessly scan the stars trying to find an object.
