As the Alaskan sky gradually turned dark blue, the commands to my sled dog team broke the silence. I threw a glance over my shoulder as I raced down the frozen river in the sub-zero temperatures. Where was Mike, my guide? I wondered if he realized I was miles away.
While exploring in the early evening, my lead dog smelled something it couldn’t resist. Regardless of my instructions, it instinctively turned sharply and led all the other dogs in the opposite direction at full speed. In my conversations with Mike over the past few days, I’d been told that if I got lost, I would be in big trouble. There weren’t any supplies for me — no extra clothing or shelter, not to mention the firestarter, and we had seen wolf tracks regularly.
It was March, the end of the Alaskan winter. A long journey from Australia had brought me to Yukon, Alaska. My hosts’ log cabin was the starting point for my 10-day adventure. Wayne and Scarlett, my hosts, lived a sustainable life. They hunted, fished, and gathered food while consciously minimizing their carbon footprint. Having enjoyed many years of exploring the Alaskan wilderness, the couple chose to help adventurers to experience the same lifestyle.
Driving a team of sled dogs is not as easy as it appears. I’d imagined it would be a very relaxing experience, enjoying the scenery as I moved smoothly. In reality it turned out much tougher. You must predict where your dogs would go and watch for changes in the icy surface.
During the journey, we stayed in a different place every night, and took care of our dog teams. These dogs can guarantee our safety and help us escape dangerous situations, so their health and well-being always rank first. After we settled, we started collecting snow for water and cutting fire-wood.
Luckily, I didn’t end up in the fangs (尖牙) of wolves. Mike found me sometime later. Our dog teams, in the excitement of being reunited, headed straight for each other and got tangled up in the ropes. There’s never a boring moment.
24. Why did the author get lost?
A.The weather worsened unexpectedly.
B.The guide failed to keep up with the team.
C.The lead dog was attracted by a smell.
D.The wolf disturbed the dog with its howl.
25. How did the author like the real dog sled ride?
A.Relaxing. B.Dangerous.
C.Comfortable. D.Challenging.
26. What can we learn about the trip?
A.Wolves often attacked visitors in the area.
B.The dogs were highly valued and well treated.
C.The author stayed in the same place each night.
D.Enough supplies were prepared for emergencies.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A.An adventure in wilderness.
B.The Alaskan lifestyle.
C.An appreciation of nature.
D.The tourism in Alaska.

It has been known for a long time that obesity tends to run in families, but it was not until about 20 years ago that scientists started to discover that changes in specific genes can have very large impacts on our weight even from early childhood.
One of these genes MC4R makes a protein that is produced in the brain where it sends signals to our appetite centers, telling them how much fat we have stored- When the MC4R gene does not work properly, our brains think we have lower fat stores than we do, signaling that we are starving and need to eat.
A new study, led by scientists from the University of Cambridge and the University of Bristol, has found that around one in every 340 people may carry a disruptive mutation (变异)at MC4R. People who carry these mutations were more likely to have a greater weight from early childhood and, by 18 years of age, they were on average 17 kg heavier, with the majority of this excess weight likely to be fat.
These results were found by studying the MC4R gene in a random sample of around 6,000 participants born in Bristol. Whenever a mutation was found, the researchers went on to study its frequency and effects in the laboratory. Based on the frequency of mutations in this study, it was estimated that around 200,000 people in the UK carry a substantial amount of unexpected fat because of mutations in MC4R.
Professor Stephen O’Rahilly, one of the researchers, said, “Parents of obese children are often blamed for poor parenting and not all children obtain appropriate professional help. Our findings should encourage a more sympathetic and reasonable approach to overweight children and their families - including genetic analysis in all seriously obese children.”
Though the MC4R gene is a striking example, this is only one gene of many that affect our weight. “In the longer term, knowledge of the brain pathways controlled by MC4R should help in the design of drug that help restore people to a healthy weight,” Stephen added.
28. What can we know about MC4R gene?
A. MC4R gene affects people’s appetite negatively.
B. The mutation of MC4R gene stimulates people’s desire to eat.
C. MC4R is the only gene that contributes to people’s overweight problem.
D. Scientists discovered MC4R could influence people’s weight two decades ago.
29. What does the underlined word “excess" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Proper. B. Essential.
C. Considerable. D. Additional.
30. What can we infer from Professor Stephen’s words?
A. Parents should be to blame for poor parenting.
B. The obesity problem should be treated fairly and scientifically.
C. New drugs can help overweight children lose much fat in the long run.
D. Knowledge of MC4R should be applied to helping obese children physically and mentally.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Suggestions on how to maintain a standard weight.
B. A discussion of British people’s overweight problems.
C. A study about the effect of MC4R’s mutation on weight.
D. The relationship between people's appetite and MC4R’s mutation.
D
Do you think alien beings exist somewhere in the universe? It seems like Mars, our closest neighbor, has inspired the most science fiction as the place where aliens are most likely to come from. Recent Mars probes (探测) have shown us that there is no life on that planet—at least not now. But that does not mean that life does not exist elsewhere—after all, the universe is really big. A lot of scientific research is going on in the search for “extraterrestrial life”.
Think about it—why should the seven billion people on this little planet be the only living beings in the universe? It would, in fact, seem logical that this is not the case. So scientific research in this matter is based around the idea of finding other planets that have environments that can support life —environments similar to the Earth. The search is on for the evidence of the existence, or earlier existence of life: from very wise beings to simple organisms (有机物).
So far, there have been a number of theories as to which planetary bodies may have an atmosphere that can support such life and therefore deserve closer attention. As for places within our own Milky Way Galaxy, it has been assumed over the decades that Mars and Venus, as well as some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, may have been hosts for life. Now, as technologies have improved and we can obtain measurements of the composition of the atmosphere on extra-solar planets, the chances of finding “alien” life forms are increasing.
There has been a theory that some of the planets in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star Gliese 581 may be able to support life. In 2007, scientists discovered exoplanet Gliese 581c—and felt that its atmosphere was most suitable for supporting life. But further research revealed that it would not. Now, attention has been turned to Gliese 581d, at the outer edge of the star’s habitable zone. The main standards for deciding whether a planetary body can be life-supporting are atmospheric conditions which allow the existence of water. Gliese 581 is about 20. 4 light years away from the Earth, so even if life does exist there, the distance would mean that communication would be unlikely.
Having said this—who says alien life forms (if they exist) need water?
32. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Life existing outside of the Earth.
B. The evidence of the existence of life.
C. Other faraway planets in the universe.
D. Creatures known from science fictions.
33. What makes it possible for people to find “alien beings”?
A. Modern scientific theories. B. Atmospheric conditions.
C. Environments similar to the Earth. D. Advanced technologies.
34. From the passage, we know that _________.
A. the atmosphere of Gliese 581c was most suitable for life
B. it is not certain whether alien life forms need water or not
C. the 7 billion people on the Earth are the only beings in the universe
D. the distance of 20. 4 light years makes it impossible to find life on Gliese 581d
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Do Aliens Exist? B. Is Mars Suitable for Life?
C. Are Alien Life Forms Various? D. Can We Communicate with Aliens?
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We tend to respect and even admire those who exhibit a lot of willpower. The friend who hits up the gym five times a week. The colleague who manages to stay calm and focused in nearly every situation. Research suggests that these people are not only viewed as trustworthy but also morally superior. 36 Surveys show that many Americans are feeling heightened levels of anxiety and stress, which can make delaying gratification (满足感) and containing desires even harder.
37 While you can use willpower to manage your emotions or fight temptation (诱惑), it may not be the most effective method. To improve willpower, it boils down to just trying harder. But self-control involves a set of skills that can be learned. Preparation, mind-set and the ability to either avoid or reframe temptation can be far more effective than trying to force that desire down.
Developing your self-control starts with self-empowerment. 38 After all, if you don't think you can control yourself then why would you make any efforts to do so? Focus on the times when you have succeeded in accomplishing a goal related to the one you' re focused on now. You can also try thinking about times when a family member or friend was successful and ask them for any tips. 39
There are multiple strategies for improving self-control, like creating routines, monitoring your progress and editing your inner circle. Trying several is more effective than picking just one. And remember, attaining better self-control is not an all-or-nothing pursuit. 40 Even so, you can still make progress towards your goal. The key is to keep going.
A. If they can do it, you can too.
B. You may need support from others.
C. But do not confuse willpower with self-control.
D. Yet, willpower is in short supply in modern life.
E. Self-control is important for people to achieve goals.
F. Believing you are capable of it can help you succeed.
G. You may slip up sometimes or allow yourself a cheat day.

Maybe teenage years weren't the ideal time to receive my mother's advice to wear a range of colours. What better way to express how you feel on any given day, and convey that mood 56 the world, she would say. It was important to the eye, to the soul.
It really isn't the best advice 57 (give) any teenager, especially one 58 was hoping to disappear in all-black sportswear. It's 61 question that brings a surprising degree of daily self-awareness. It's asking,“What mood am I in?”“Do I want 62 (see) or do I want to hide?”. The idea of starting the day in the right colour sends me back to myself.
My wardrobe 63 (become) more colourful over the years, and, my mother was right: it does bring me joy to wear pink shoes with a golden shine, and a silver dress which is so bright that it can 64 (probable) be spotted from the moon. Ricky had finished school in his small hometown. Although his father hoped he would go on to study for a Master’s degree, Ricky was determined to learn computer skills. At school, he had once watched a computer demonstration and was deeply impressed. From then on, he made up his mind to leave the town and go to the city.
Life in the city was far from easy. Ricky’s troubles began with finding a place to live. He looked at several rooms, but either the rent was too high or the place was too far from his training institute. At last, an elderly couple agreed to take him in. The room was small and poorly ventilated(通风的), but Ricky felt thankful because they also provided him with meals.
Ricky attended classes regularly, yet he found it hard to follow the instructor. He sat at the back of the classroom, kept his eyes on his notebook, and wrote down whatever he could understand. As soon as class was over, he would leave quietly without speaking to anyone. Later, he would borrow the books recommended by the instructor from the library and spend the evening trying to understand them. While his classmates relaxed and enjoyed themselves after class, Ricky stayed by himself. Though he longed to join them, he lacked the courage. As the days went by, he began to doubt his decision. More than once, he wished he had listened to his father and chosen further study instead.
One day, his father came to see him and found him looking miserable. Ricky could no longer hold back his feelings. He told his father that he wanted to give up and return home. After listening patiently, his father suggested that he talk to the instructor about his difficulties and try reading books written by local authors or in a language he could understand more easily.

(1)写作词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Ricky decided to follow his father’s advice.
With growing confidence, Ricky started to challenge himself in new ways.
