Every Saturday morning, fifteen-year-old Lily takes the bus to a small animal shelter near her home. While her friends are still sleeping, she is busy feeding the cats, cleaning the cages and walking the dogs that nobody has come to take home. The shelter is small and always short of hands, so every helper is warmly welcomed.
Lily started helping at the shelter a year ago, after she saw a poster asking for volunteers. At first her parents worried that it would take up too much of her time. But Lily promised to finish her homework first, and soon they could see how happy the work made her. Now they even drive her there on cold winter mornings, quietly proud of what their daughter is doing.
Her favourite dog is a small brown one called Coco. When Coco first arrived, she was so frightened that she hid in a corner and refused to eat. Day after day, Lily sat quietly beside the cage, speaking to her in a soft voice and offering little pieces of food, until at last Coco began to trust her.
One afternoon a kind family came to the shelter, looking for a gentle dog. Lily told them all about Coco and showed them how clever and loving she really was. A week later, Coco went home with them. Watching the car drive away, Lily felt both sad and happy at the same time. She was sad to lose a friend, yet happy that Coco had finally found a warm home of her own.
People sometimes ask Lily why she gives up her weekends for animals she will one day have to say goodbye to. She just smiles. Helping a frightened animal learn to trust again, she says, is worth every early morning — and every goodbye.

Teenager's Invention Takes On Ocean Plastic
April 2026 — Around the world, tiny pieces of plastic are slipping into our rivers and seas, where they are almost impossible to clean up. This year, a clever idea from an eighteen-year-old student is giving scientists fresh hope, and her name is now known far beyond her small hometown.
Arya, a high-school student, has invented a special material that can gather these tiny bits of plastic from water and then safely break down on its own, leaving no harmful waste behind. Scientists have long warned that these tiny pieces, called microplastics, can harm fish, birds and even the food we eat. In March 2026, her invention won The Earth Prize, a well-known award for young people with ideas to protect the planet. She beat thousands of other young inventors from around the world to take the top award.
Along with the honour came about 12,500 US dollars to help turn her idea into real products. Arya plans to use the money to develop everyday items such as bags and packaging that can tackle plastic pollution instead of adding to it. If the plan succeeds, such products could one day replace ordinary plastic in many shops.
"I never imagined that a project started in my school lab could reach so far," Arya said after the ceremony. "I just hope it shows other young people that their ideas matter, and that we do not have to wait until we are older to make a difference."
Experts say that solutions like Arya's are badly needed, as plastic waste keeps growing each year. Whether or not her invention one day reaches every shop, her story has already inspired students far beyond her own classroom. Teachers say several of her schoolmates have since started their own small projects to cut down on plastic.
28. What has Arya invented?
A. A machine that makes cheap plastic.
B. A new and stronger plastic bottle.
C. A robot that swims in the sea.
D. A material that removes tiny plastic.
29. What does the underlined word "tackle" probably mean?
A. Deal with.
B. Add to.
C. Pay for.
D. Look at.
【答案】A 【解析】根据划线词处“tackle plastic pollution instead of adding to it”可知,tackle 与“adding to(增加)”相对,意为“应对、解决”。其余选项分析:add to(增加)与之相反,pay for(付钱)、look at(看)均不合语境。故选A。
30. What does Arya plan to do with the prize money?
A. Build a new school science lab.
B. Develop useful everyday products.
C. Travel around the whole world.
D. Give it away to other students.
31. What does Arya's story mainly show?
A. Plastic pollution can never be solved.
B. Winning prizes is easier than people think.

D. School labs are better than real ones.
【答案】C 【解析】根据她的话“their ideas matter ... we do not have to wait until we are older to make a difference”及末段她激励了众多学生可知,故事说明年轻人的想法也能带来改变。
D
A team of psychologists carried out an experiment to find out whether spending time in nature really changes the way young people think and feel, and the answer, they found, was a clear yes.
In the study, about 120 students were invited to take a twenty-minute walk. They were randomly divided into two groups. One group walked through a quiet, green park, while the other walked the same distance along a busy city street. Neither group was told what the study was really about. Before and after the walk, all the students took the same tests on attention and answered questions about their mood.
The results were clear. On average, the students who had walked in the park scored about 15% higher on the attention tasks than those who had walked along the street. Among students who said they rarely spent time outdoors, the difference was even larger, a finding that surprised the researchers themselves.
The students' mood was measured too. The park group reported feeling noticeably calmer and happier than the street group. Importantly, since both groups had walked exactly the same distance, the team concluded that it was the green surroundings, rather than the exercise itself, that had made the difference.
"When we are surrounded by traffic and screens, our minds are always on alert," said Dr. Helen Carter, who led the study. "Nature gives the tired brain a chance to rest. A short walk among trees may be one of the simplest ways to think more clearly."
32. What did the two groups of students do differently?
A. They studied for different lengths of time.
B. They took completely different tests.
C. They walked for different distances.
D. They walked in two different places.
33. What did the study find about the park group?
A. They did better on the attention tasks.
B. They felt more tired after the walk.
C. They scored lower than the street group.
D. They disliked walking in the park.
故选A。
34. Why did the researchers conclude that nature made the difference?
A. Because the park group walked much more.
B. Because both groups walked equal distances.
C. Because the street group did not walk.
D. Because no student took any of the tests.
【答案】B 【解析】根据第四段“since both groups had walked exactly the same distance, ... it was the green surroundings, rather than the exercise itself”可知,两组步行距离相同,故差异源于绿色环境而非运动本身。
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Guide to Walking Faster.
B. Why City Streets Are Noisy.
C. How Nature Helps the Mind.
D. The Best Tests for Students.

Anna had always been one of the liveliest girls in our class. So when she suddenly fell ill and had to stay in hospital for two weeks, the classroom felt strangely quiet without her. We all missed her cheerful voice and her bright smile. The empty desk by the window seemed to remind us of her every single day.
One morning, our class monitor, Jack, had an idea. "Anna can't come to us," he said, "so why don't we bring a little sunshine to her?" Everyone loved the plan at once. We spent the whole lunch break happily deciding who would do what. We decided to prepare a surprise for Anna and visit her together that weekend. Nobody wanted to be left out, and bright ideas came pouring in.
There was a lot to do, and not much time. Some of us were good at drawing, others at writing or singing, and each of us wanted to give Anna something from the heart. Some of us even stayed after school to finish our part, whispering so that the secret would not slip out. Quietly and happily, we began to get everything ready, taking care to keep it all a secret from her. By Friday evening everything was nearly ready, and we could hardly wait to see whether our little plan would lift her spirits.
Possible Version(约170词)
That weekend, we gathered together and got everything ready for Anna. Those who could draw made a big colourful card, covered with kind words from the whole class. Others recorded a short video, in which everyone took turns to send Anna a cheerful message and wish her a quick recovery. A few of us bought a small bunch of bright flowers and a basket of fresh fruit. As we worked, we kept imagining the look on Anna's face, and the thought of it made every busy minute feel worthwhile.
When we walked into the hospital room, Anna's eyes opened wide with surprise. For a moment she could hardly believe that the whole class had come to see her. As we handed her the card, played the video and placed the flowers by her bed, tears of joy filled her eyes. She told us, in a soft voice, that she had never felt so lucky to have such friends. Looking at her happy smile, we understood that the greatest medicine is not found in a bottle, but in the warmth of people who truly care.

24. What does Lily do at the shelter?
A. She sells pets to the visitors.
B. She trains the dogs for shows.
C. She paints pictures of the cats.

A. By being patient and kind to her.
B. By taking her home right away.

D. By keeping her away from people.
26. How did Lily feel when Coco left?
A. Angry and tired. B. Both sad and happy.

A. Deal with. B. Add to. C. Pay for. D. Look at.
C. Young people's ideas can really matter.
D. School labs are better than real ones.
34. Why did the researchers conclude that nature made the difference?
A. Because the park group walked much more.
B. Because both groups walked equal distances.
C. Because the street group did not walk.
D. Because no student took any of the tests.

That weekend, we gathered together and got everything ready for Anna.
When we walked into the hospital room, Anna's eyes opened wide with surprise.
