Every fast-food employee (员工) knows that the drive-through window is the worst position. You press the headset closer to your ear and repeat the customer’s order perfectly, only to be greeted with a shout “That’s not what I want”. Drivers don’t exactly enjoy having to stand outside in the cold and screaming their orders into a speaker box. In such cases, most customers tend to take out their anger on the employees.
It was a freezing cold Tuesday afternoon when everything changed. This woman was different.
“I’ll get the next car’s order as well,” she said as she came up to the window to pay. Though she was obviously feeling cold, her bright smile lit up her face like a fire. “I’ll pay for their meal,” she said. “Pay it forward and all that.”
Completely shocked, I charged her as required, and when the next customer arrived at the window, I explained what had just happened. I watched as his facial expression changed, first unhappy to be out in the cold, then surprised at the act of kindness, and finally delighted by his luck. “I’ll pay for the next order then,” he replied, nodding and waving at the impatient driver behind him. He handed over the cash and received his pre-paid meal.
The act continued throughout the entire rush hour. Five cars passed, and then ten, then twenty. No one refused to pay. As drivers drove off, they honked (按喇叭) to wave their thanks, knowing that they would be unlikely to see each other again.
Few employees would like the drive-through window position. Ice keeps building up on the window, the noise of engines hurts your ears and your words are lost in the violent wind. But it only takes one customer to change the entire flow of traffic. It only takes one moment, one smile, to warm up even the coldest days.
1. What makes the drive-through window the least popular task?
A. The heavy workloads. B. The countless customers.
C. The tough environment. D. The outdated equipment.
2. What is the effect of the woman’s action?
A. Increased sales of meals. B. Changes in drivers’ behavior.
C. A faster ordering process. D. A flood of praise and support.
3. What message does the text intend to suggest?
A. A smile opens every door. B. Patience is the key to life.
C. Hard work earns its own reward. D. Kindness grows when it is shared.

根据第一段中“Every fast-food employee (员工) knows that the drive-through window is the worst position.(每个快餐员工都知道免下车窗口是最糟糕的岗位)”以及最后一段“Few employees would like the drive-through window position. Ice keeps building up on the window, the noise of engines hurts your ears and your words are lost in the violent wind.(几乎没有员工喜欢免下车窗口这个岗位。窗上不断积冰,发动机的噪音震得耳朵疼,你说话的声音还会被狂风吞没)”可知,免下车窗口不受欢迎是因为糟糕恶劣的工作环境。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“The act continued throughout the entire rush hour. Five cars passed, and then ten, then twenty. No one refused to pay. (这个举动在整个高峰时段一直延续:五辆车、十辆车、二十辆车依次传递,没有人拒绝为下一位买单)”可知,这位女士主动买单的行为改变了后续司机们的行为,让原本容易对员工发火的司机们都加入了爱心传递。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“But it only takes one customer to change the entire flow of traffic. It only takes one moment, one smile, to warm up even the coldest days.(但只需要一个顾客就可以改变整个车流的状态。只需要一个瞬间、一个微笑,就可以温暖最寒冷的日子)”并结合全文讲述的一位女士主动为下一辆车付餐费而引发的连锁爱意传递可知,文章想要传递的核心是善意在分享传递中会不断延续生长。

Growing up, Blackwell had a comfortable life full of opportunity. While he studied in Chicago, he worked as a volunteer teacher at a high school in Englewood, one of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods with a high poverty rate. There, he opened his eyes to the difficulties his students faced. He realized that they wanted a chance at something better.
In 2015, Blackwell was helping turn unused land into a community farm to grow food when he was surprised to learn that the US spends billions on imported flowers each year.
“I said, ‘Wait a minute. Why are we importing flowers from other countries when we have all this land, all of this youth?’” he said. “Maybe flowers are the answer.”
In 2017, Blackwell started a flower farm. The effort provided a handful of much-needed jobs and changed rubbish-filled land into lively gardens. Today, he has six sustainable farms around the city, which have created hundreds of jobs since 2019. He has also helped his workers develop skills and confidence that will serve them in any job.
One of the workers, Dionta White, is a senior member of the farm team. He once fell into street life in Englewood, losing friends to gun violence. He’s now responsible for growing the flowers and helping train new workers. He says it feels good to let people see Englewood from a different point of view. “When we grow these flowers, it just … brings peace to the community,” says Dionta.
For Blackwell, helping young people grow isn’t that different from growing flowers. “Give them the right opportunity…the right support, and then all of a sudden you see the beauty of their lives shining for all to see,” he said.
4. What inspired Blackwell to start his farm?
A. The stories from his students. B. The lack of farms in Chicago.
C. The challenges in Englewood. D. The wish to improve education.
5. What can be learned about Blackwell’s farms from paragraph 4?
A. They have attracted massive attention.
B. They aim to provide training programs.
C. They have made a positive social impact.
D. They will develop even faster in the future.
6. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Road to a Flower Business B. Planting Hopes in Community
C. Inspiring Youth Through Volunteering D. A New Approach to Growing Flowers
根据第一段中“While he studied in Chicago, he worked as a volunteer teacher at a high school in Englewood, one of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods with a high poverty rate. There, he opened his eyes to the difficulties his students faced.(当布莱克威尔在芝加哥学习时,他在恩格尔伍德的一所高中担任志愿教师,恩格尔伍德是芝加哥危险程度最高、贫困率最高的社区之一。在那里,他看清了自己学生所面临的困境)”以及第三段中““I said, ‘Wait a minute. Why are we importing flowers from other countries when we have all this land, all of this youth?’” he said. “Maybe flowers are the answer.”(他说:“我说,‘等一下。既然我们有这么多土地,这么多年轻人,为什么还要从其他国家进口鲜花?’也许花就是答案。”)”可知,恩格尔伍德当地存在高贫困、年轻人缺少发展机会的问题,正是这个社区的发展挑战启发布莱克威尔创办花卉农场。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The effort provided a handful of much-needed jobs and changed rubbish-filled land into lively gardens. Today, he has six sustainable farms around the city, which have created hundreds of jobs since 2019. He has also helped his workers develop skills and confidence that will serve them in any job.(这项事业提供了多个急需的工作岗位,还将堆满垃圾的土地改造成了生机勃勃的花园。如今,他在芝加哥全市拥有六个可持续农场,自2019年以来已经创造了数百个工作岗位。他还帮助工人培养了可以适用于任何工作的技能与信心)”可知,布莱克威尔的农场解决了当地的就业问题,改造了当地的垃圾场,还帮助劳动者获得个人成长,说明这产生了积极的社会影响。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“For Blackwell, helping young people grow isn’t that different from growing flowers. “Give them the right opportunity…the right support, and then all of a sudden you see the beauty of their lives shining for all to see,” he said.(对布莱克威尔来说,帮助年轻人成长和种花并没有太大区别。他说:“给他们合适的机会……恰当的支持,然后你突然就会看到,他们生命的美好绽放出来,让所有人都能看见)”可知,本文围绕布莱克威尔创办社区花卉农场展开,通过种花为社区的年轻人创造机会,在社区播种希望,因此B选项“在社区播种希望”最适合作为本文标题。
C
Even while carrying $1.28 trillion in credit card debt (信用卡债务), many Americans are still willing to spend a lot on travel and entertainment. But it will cost even more thanks to “funflation,” a term used to explain the increasing price of live events as people long for the experiences they lost during the Covid years.
Despite rising costs, 38% of adults said they planned to take on more debt to travel, dine out and see live entertainment in the months ahead, according to a survey by Bankrate, a financial (财经的) information company. 27% of those surveyed said they would spend more than they have to travel, while 14% would dip into the red to dine out and another 13% would depend on credit to go to the theater, see a live sporting event or attend a concert.
“There’s still a lot of need for out-of-home entertainment,” said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate. “Some of that reflects a ‘you only live once’ mindset that grew during the Covid years, and some of that is because many economic (经济的) indicators — including GDP growth and the unemployment rate — are in favorable shape.”
Younger adults were more likely to spend heavily on leisure, Bankrate found. Although an increased cost of living has made it particularly hard for those just starting out, young adults are taking a more relaxed approach to their long-term financial security.
Nearly two out of five young travelers have spent up to $5,000 on tickets alone for destination live events, and many say it’s well worth it. Rather than cut spending to increase savings, 73% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 said they would rather have a better quality of life than extra money in the bank.
7. What is one result of people’s experiences during Covid?
A. Increasing savings for the future. B. A stronger desire to earn money.
C. Growing concerns over heavy debts. D. Rising costs of live entertainment.
8. What does the underlined phrase “dip into the red” probably mean?
A. Go into debt. B. Save up. C. Pay higher prices. D. Go a long way.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Reasons for strong interest in live events. B. Favorable signs in the American economy.
C. Young adults’ attitude toward life since Covid. D. Effects of entertainment spending on economy.
10. What best describes American younger adults’ attitude to entertainment spending?
A. Stressed. B. Carefree. C. Hesitant. D. Uninterested.
D 8. A 9. A 10. B

根据第一段“But it will cost even more thanks to “funflation,” a term used to explain the increasing price of live events as people long for the experiences they lost during the Covid years.(但由于“趣味通货膨胀”这一术语,费用将更高。该术语用来解释随着人们怀念疫情期间失去的体验,现场活动价格不断上涨的现象)”可知,人们在新冠疫情期间经历的一个结果是现场娱乐成本上升。
【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Despite rising costs, 38% of adults said they planned to take on more debt to travel, dine out and see live entertainment in the months ahead, according to a survey by Bankrate, a financial (财经的) information company.(尽管成本不断上升,但根据财经信息公司Bankrate的一项调查,38%的成年人表示,他们计划在未来几个月内通过借贷来旅行、外出就餐以及观看现场娱乐活动)”可知,此处指成年人通过负债来吃饭,故划线词意思是“负债”。
根据第三段““There’s still a lot of need for out-of-home entertainment,” said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate. “Some of that reflects a ‘you only live once’ mindset that grew during the Covid years, and some of that is because many economic (经济的) indicators — including GDP growth and the unemployment rate — are in favorable shape.”(“户外娱乐的需求仍然很大,”Bankrate的高级行业分析师泰德·罗斯曼表示,“其中一部分源于新冠疫情期间兴起的‘人生只有一次’的心态,另一部分则是因为许多经济指标——包括GDP增长和失业率——都处于有利状态。”)”
根据第四段“Although an increased cost of living has made it particularly hard for those just starting out, young adults are taking a more relaxed approach to their long-term financial security.(尽管生活成本上升使得刚起步的人尤为困难,但年轻成年人正以更轻松的方式应对长期财务安全问题)”可知,美国年轻成年人对娱乐消费态度的是轻松随意。

We rely on news to learn about what is happening in the world around us. However, reports on the same events usually present different information. How do these differences come about?
Journalists may have different focuses. ____12____ Take the two news reports on the Henderson Tower fire as an example. The first report pays more attention to the rescue efforts, while the second talks more about deaths and injuries. ____13____
Even if news reports are written from the same aspect, they may differ from each other. For instance, the numbers of deaths differ in the two news reports on the Henderson Tower fire. When we come across such factual differences, we should not rush to the conclusion that one of the news reports gives false information. ____14____ News reports written at different stages could present different information. Besides, journalists may approach information differently. Suppose official estimates (估计) of the number of deaths vary between 5 and 9. ____15____ Therefore, checking different sources enables us to draw a more informed conclusion.
To sum up, it is wise to read news reports written from various aspects and at different stages, which brings us a clearer understanding of a situation. We also need to remember not to blindly trust what we have read. ____16____
A. That is something we ought to avoid.
B. Instead, check when the reports were written.
C. This would influence how they report an event.
D. The number may cause journalists to feel worried.
E. With independent judgement, we can become critical news readers.

根据上文“Journalists may have different focuses. (记者可能有不同的关注点。)”以及后文“Take the two news reports on the Henderson Tower fire as an example. The first report pays more attention to the rescue efforts, while the second talks more about deaths and injuries. (以亨德森大厦火灾的两则新闻报道为例,第一则报道更侧重于救援工作,而第二则则更多地谈及伤亡情况。)”可知,前文提到记者有不同的关注点,后文举例说明不同报道的内容差异,C项“这会影响他们报道事件的方式。”承接前文,引出举例,符合逻辑。
【13题详解】
根据上文“Take the two news reports on the Henderson Tower fire as an example. The first report pays more attention to the rescue efforts, while the second talks more about deaths and injuries. (以亨德森大厦火灾的两则新闻报道为例,第一则报道更侧重于救援工作,而第二则则更多地谈及伤亡情况。)”可知,前文介绍两篇报道分别侧重不同内容,F项“当我们阅读两篇报道后,就能对事件获得更全面的理解。”顺承上文的举例,符合语境。
【14题详解】
根据上文“Even if news reports are written from the same aspect, they may differ from each other. For instance, the numbers of deaths differ in the two news reports on the Henderson Tower fire. When we come across such factual differences, we should not rush to the conclusion that one of the news reports gives false information. (即使新闻报道从同一角度撰写,它们之间也可能存在差异。例如,在关于亨德森大厦火灾的两份新闻报道中,死亡人数有所不同。当我们遇到此类事实上的差异时,不应急于断定其中一份报道提供了虚假信息)”以及后文“News reports written at different stages could present different information. Besides, journalists may approach information differently. Suppose official estimates (估计) of the number of deaths vary between 5 and 9. (不同阶段撰写的新闻报道可能呈现不同的信息。此外,记者获取信息的方式也可能有所不同。例如,官方对死亡人数的估计在5到9人之间不等。)”可知,前文指出遇到事实差异不要匆忙断定某篇报道造假,后文提到不同写作阶段的报道信息不同,B项“反而,你可以核查报道的写作时间”衔接前后,符合逻辑。
【15题详解】
根据上文“News reports written at different stages could present different information. Besides, journalists may approach information differently. Suppose official estimates (估计) of the number of deaths vary between 5 and 9. (不同阶段撰写的新闻报道可能呈现不同的信息。此外,记者获取信息的方式也可能有所不同。例如,官方对死亡人数的估计在5到9人之间不等。)”可知,前文给出死亡人数的估计范围,G项“记者可能会报道最小值、最大值或是介于两者之间的数值”对应前文范围,解释了数据差异的来源,符合语境。
【16题详解】
根据上文“To sum up, it is wise to read news reports written from various aspects and at different stages, which brings us a clearer understanding of a situation. We also need to remember not to blindly trust what we have read. (总之,明智的做法是从不同角度和不同阶段阅读新闻报道,这有助于我们更清晰地了解某一情况。同时,我们也应记住不要盲目相信所读到的内容。)”可知,前文总结指出不要盲目相信读到的新闻,E项“拥有独立判断,我们就能成为批判性的新闻读者”收束全文,点明主旨,符合要求。

How is everything going? I can’t wait to share a special DIY experience with you. I just turned an old pair of jeans into a practical tote bag.
The jeans were worn out but I hated throwing them away to create waste. Besides, plastic shopping bags pollute the environment badly, so I decided to reuse the jeans instead of buying new bags. I cut and sewed them carefully with basic tools.
This activity brought me a lot. Not only did I learn simple sewing skills, but I also realized the value of recycling small items. It feels great to live an eco-friendly life. Have you ever tried reusing old clothes?
