It was a hot summer day. Papa had some work to do. “It’s hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk (人行道),” he said. “You boys keep yourselves busy while I finish my work, and we’ll do something fun together to cool off.”
After hearing his father’s words, Jesse thought it was unbelievable. Was it true? So he decided to have a try himself. He came back a few minutes later. “Actually, it didn’t work,” Jesse said disappointedly. “Dad lied to us.” “What?” Sam asked. “It isn’t hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk,” said Jesse.
Papa looked up from his work. “Did you try to do that?” he asked. “Yes, but the egg wasn’t cooked, and it didn’t even turn white around the edges (边缘),” said Jesse. “Show me the egg, Jesse,” said Sam. The egg had not changed a bit. It looked like a yellow eye.
“Why don’t you use a magnifying glass (放大镜) to focus sunlight on the egg?” Sam suggested.
“Miss Li told us that the magnifying glass focuses the sunlight and causes the temperature to rise. Maybe we can use it to fry the egg.” “It’s a good idea. Let’s have a try!” After a few minutes of focusing the sunlight with the magnifying glass, the egg was just fried. The two boys were so excited about that.
Later, they understood, “What others say is not always right. It only takes practice and effort to find out whether it’s true or not. Therefore, when things don’t go well, we can try to think differently so that the problems can be easily solved.”

C
The 2026 Government Work Report clearly says that China will support some areas to carry out spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary school students, while putting into practice the staggered paid leave (错峰带薪休假) system for workers. As a hot topic, the rule has been tested in provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Sichuan.
These short holidays bring many benefits to students. They can lower study stress and help students keep healthy both in body and mind. With nice and comfortable weather, students can go out of classrooms to take part in activities, including farming experiences, nature watching and local culture learning. In this way, book knowledge is turned into real-life experience.
The holidays also bring good points to families. Wrong-time leave allows parents to spend happy time with their children at lower costs, avoiding the crowds during busy travel seasons. Many families choose to travel, visit relatives or go to museums together, making family ties closer. At the same time, the holidays help develop local tourism and economy (旅游业与经济), making a win-win situation for education and society.
However, there are still difficulties in carrying out these rules. The main problem is that many working parents cannot look after their children during the holidays. To solve this, many schools offer childcare services with colorful activities, and local communities offer more activities for students. The holidays can also be set freely according to local situations.
In short, spring and autumn holidays are an important educational change. They show a turn from exam-centered education to a focus on all-round development. If families, schools and society work together, these holidays will help students grow in a healthier and more meaningful way.
36. What can students do during spring and autumn holidays according to the article?
A. They can only learn knowledge from textbooks.
B. They can take part in different kinds of activities.
C. They have to stay at home and do more schoolwork.
D. They can travel with no parents around.
37. Why are the holidays good for society and education?
A. They make schools have longer teaching time.
B. They let parents spend less time with their children.
C. They help develop local tourism and create a win-win situation.
D. They make people travel only during busy seasons.
38. Which of the following can be inferred (推断) from the passage?
A. All provinces in China must follow the rule right away.
B. The “wrong-time paid leave” system will solve all the problems for parents.
C. The development of local tourism and economy depends on the new rule.
D. The rule will play an important role in helping students develop in many ways.
39. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the spring and autumn holidays?
A. Doubtful and worried B. Supportive and hopeful
C. Uninterested and careless D. Calm and unhappy
40. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. ① / ②③ / ④ / ⑤ B. ①② / ③④ / ⑤
C. ①②/③ / ④⑤ D. ① / ②③ / ④⑤
【答案】36. B 37. C 38. D 39. B 40. A

①We know that AI is not a real human. However, it seems many of us can’t help treating it like one. In a survey of 2000 people in the US, 48 percent believed we should have good manners when talking to AI, said The New York Post.
②Scientists at the Imperial College London in the UK have made a similar discovery recently. They found that humans tend to treat AI as human beings, showing sympathy (同情) toward them and even protecting them, Science Daily reported.
③In their experiment, the scientists invited 244 volunteers to play an online ball game with an AI bot. A make-believe (假扮的) volunteer also took part, and sometimes left out the AI on purpose by passing the ball only to human players. As the scientists watched the game, they discovered that most of the time the volunteers tried to fix the unfairness (不公平) toward the bot by giving it the ball more often.
④The finding is in line with the ideas of Media Equation Theory (媒介方程理论), the scientists said in their papers. Developed in the 1990s by scientists at Stanford University in the US, the theory suggests we often respond to media and technology as we do to real people and places, rather than just seeing them as tools.
⑤An example is Replika, an AI chatbot created in 2017. It has about 2 million users worldwide. “Your Replika will always be by your side no matter what you are up to,” reads its official website. But the AI’s support turned dangerous when it encouraged Jaswant Singh Chail, a young man in the UK, to carry out his plan to kill the Queen of England. Chail tried to do so in December 2021, but he was stopped in time. However, he was still put in prison.
⑥Companies should avoid making AI too human-like in their design, advised the scientists at Imperial College London. This can help people tell the difference between virtual (虚拟的) and real communication.
41. How does the writer organize paragraph 1?
A. By giving an example. B. By listing some numbers.
C. By answering several questions. D. By introducing different opinions.
42. What does the writer want to tell us by mentioning “Replika” in the article?
A. AI has educational advantages. B. AI can influence humans in some ways.
C. AI is designed for some purposes. D. AI can’t be used in social communication.
43. What does the underlined phrase “in line with” in Paragraph ④ probably mean?
A. different from B. similar to
C. opposite to D. not connected with
44. The following sentence can best be put at the end of ________.
While this could make humans and AI work better as a team, it also has risks, especially when AI bots are designed to act like “friends” to people.
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 3 C. Paragraph 4 D. Paragraph 5
45. If a company is going to develop a new AI robot, which suggestion from the passage should it follow?
A. Make the AI robot have its own feelings to attract users.
B. Design the AI robot to refuse any dangerous questions or orders from users.
C. Avoid making the AI robot too human-like to help users tell virtual from real.
D. Let the AI robot learn from humans to improve its communication skills.

文章第一段提到“In a survey of 2000 people in the US, 48 percent believed we should have good manners when talking to AI”,作者通过列举“2000人”“48%”等具体数据来支持观点,因此写作手法是“By listing some numbers”。
【42题详解】
文章第五段提到Replika的例子,指出它“encouraged Jaswant Singh Chail... to carry out his plan to kill the Queen of England”,说明AI在某些情况下会对人类产生负面影响。
【43题详解】
根据上下文,第四段提到“the finding is in line with the ideas of Media Equation Theory”,结合后文对“媒介方程理论”的解释(人们常将媒体和技术视为真实的人和地方),可知研究发现与该理论的观点是“相似的”,即“in line with”意为“与……一致;与……相似”。
【44题详解】
待插入句 While this could make humans and AI work better as a team, it also has risks...是对前文理论的承上启下总结;第4段完整介绍了“媒介方程理论”,解释了人类把AI当人对待的底层逻辑;这句话承接第4段的理论,引出第5段Replika的风险实例,是完美的过渡句。
【45题详解】
文章最后一段提到“Companies should avoid making AI too human-like in their design”,并指出这样可以帮助人们区分虚拟与现实的交流。因此,公司开发新AI机器人时应遵循的建议是“避免使其过于拟人化”。
