DIY, short for “Do It Yourself,” has become a global trend. It means creating, repairing, or improving things by oneself instead of buying new items or paying someone to do them. DIY projects can be very different, from making home decorations to fixing broken furniture.
First, DIY helps save money. Instead of spending a lot on new products or services, people can use their skills and creativity to make things at a lower cost. For example, repainting old furniture or sewing a handmade bag is much cheaper than buying new ones.
Second, DIY enhances creativity and problem-solving skills. When working on a project, people often need to think creatively to find solutions. This not only makes the brain more active but also brings a sense of achievement once the task is completed.
Moreover, DIY is environmentally friendly. By reusing and recycling materials, we reduce waste and help protect the planet. For instance, turning glass jars into flower vases or using old clothes to make tote bags can minimize unnecessary trash.
In conclusion, DIY is a rewarding activity that saves money, boosts creativity, and benefits the environment. Whether it’s a small craft or a big home improvement project, the joy of creating something with your own hands is truly priceless. So why not start a DIY project today?
21. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By asking a question. B. By showing an example.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving an explanation.
22. Which of the following is a DIY project?
A. Buying a handmade bag on one’s own. B. Paying someone to repaint old furniture.
C. Creating something with your own hands. D. Reducing waste and helping protect the planet.
23. What does the underlined word “enhances” in Para 3 mean?
A. improves B. suggests C. predicts D. understands
24. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To ask people to save money. B. To encourage people to start DIY.
C. To show people the bad points of DIY. D. To make people care about the environment.
25. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Memory is the ability to remember things. A good memory can help us do better in school, such as language-learning. A few people are born with amazing memories, but most people need to improve their memories by practising. Here are some secrets about memories.
We can still remember things that happened in our childhood, but not those from last week. In fact, if the things have strong connections (联系) with our feelings in our mind, we can remember them longer. When things happen for the first time, children often have strong feelings. Also, parents tell us the interesting or funny stories from our childhood again and again. So, we remember them much better.
It’s natural for most people to forget the new words which they learnt yesterday. Hermann Ebbinghaus wrote a book called Memory and showed a famous forgetting curve (曲线). According to him, the quickest loss of memory happens during the first two days after learning. That means going over what we’ve learned during this time can help us very well to remember the information.
A 15-year-old sometimes forgets things, but that doesn’t mean his or her memory is getting worse. Our memory gets the top at the age of 25. At that point, we can remember over 12,000 pieces of information in a minute. But after this age, the brain starts to get smaller. By middle age, our memory is much worse than when we were young.
26. How do most people improve their memories?
A. By being born with it. B. By doing nothing. C. By practicing. D. By watching TV.
27. Who wrote the book Memory and put forward a famous forgetting curve?
A. A few people with amazing memories. B. Most people who need to improve memory.
C. Hermann Ebbinghaus. D. Some language learners.
28. Which is the right picture for Hermann Ebbinghaus’s forgetting curve?
A. B. C. D.
29. At what age does our memory reach its peak, and how many pieces of information can we remember in a minute at that age in the last paragraph?
A. 15; 10,000. B. 25; over 12,000. C. Middle age; 8,000. D. 20; around 11,000.
30. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. All people are born with amazing memories.
B. We can remember last week’s things better than childhood things.
C. We can’t improve our memories by practising.
D. Having strong connections with our feelings can help remember childhood things better.

“Why is Mandarin (普通话) difficult?” and “Is it hard to learn Mandarin?” are common Baidu searches for beginners in the Mandarin language. ____31____ Here are some tips for you.
Grammar
Compared to languages like French or English, Mandarin grammar is a piece of cake. ____32____ When speaking in the past tense, a simple “了” will do. A very important thing for Mandarin is the sentence structure. Luckily, it is very easy to follow: Subject + Time + Place + Verb + Object.
Pinyin Pronunciation
Pinyin may be a challenge for many, as Mandarin sounds don’t often happen within the English language. ____33____ If you’re having trouble or are unsure of how to pronounce pinyin, there are a lot of pinyin pronunciation videos that are ready to offer help. Understanding rules of pinyin will also greatly help you learn Mandarin fast.
Tones
____34____ One word in pinyin can be used for different characters, all with very different meanings. For example, the word “si”. While “sì” means four, “sǐ” means death. If you’re not confident in tones yet, context (语境) can often help you understand the meaning behind.
In our view, it’s about time we stop asking “Is it hard to learn Mandarin Chinese”. ____35____ Not only is it a great exercise for the brain, but it’ll open up a new world for you.
A. Instead, just start learning.
B. Maybe we should use Mandarin more.
C. How can we learn Mandarin easily and fast?
D. However, with practice it shouldn’t be a problem.
E. Mandarin doesn’t have any of those different tenses.
F. They may be one of the most difficult parts in learning Mandarin.
G. How can we improve the ability to communicate in Mandarin?

六、任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1.5分,满分15分)
On buses, in meeting rooms, wherever (无论在哪里) we are, we see people looking at their mobile phones. Smart phones are so important that they are becoming irreplaceable (不可替代的). As we depend too much on them without using our brains, it seems that we are losing our smartness. Many people have lost basic skills as a result.
The first skill many people have lost is remembering phone numbers. Because phone numbers are stored (存储) in smart phone contacts, we don’t have to dial (拨) a number or look at it again. If this continues, we can’t contact (联系) others without our phones.
And some of us may be bad at telling directions (方向) because some apps can show us the way anywhere we want to go. We get so dependent on them that when we can’t use our smart phones, we lose our way.
But the worst lost skills may be social (社交的) ones, meaning that some people are becoming socially useless. We often lose ourselves in our smart phones and we don’t care about the people and things around. So some of us have lost conversational (对话的) skills and sometimes can't even tell if a person is happy or not.
Some researchers studied 51 students aged 13 and 19 who had over five hours’ screen time every day. Their task is to tell the emotions (情感) of 48 pictures of faces that were happy, sad, angry or scared. The children made an average (平均) of 14.02 mistakes at the beginning. But after a five-day camp without electronic products (电子产品), they made only 9.41 mistakes on average.
Luckily, there are ways to help us get these abilities back. We should try to remember our parents’ numbers. We should also look at street signs and shops, and it will help us draw a mind map so that we won’t lose our way. And the easiest way is to take a break from electronic products from time to time.
Are smart phones really good?
The reason for losing our smartness
We can see people looking at their mobile phones ____46____. Smart phones become so important that we depend ____47____ on them than our brains.
The ____48____ that we have lost
Remembering phone numbers
Now we ____49____ remember other people's numbers or dial them because they are stored in smart phone contacts.
The ____50____ of direction
Some apps can ____51____ us to the place we want to go to. Without smart phones, we may get lost.
Conversational ability
We often lose ourselves in our smart phones and pay ____52____ attention to the people and things around, so we are becoming socially useless.
The influence (影响) that screen time has on students
During the task of telling emotions of pictures, students made ____53____ mistakes without electronic products.
The ways to help you get those skills back
Try to remember our parents’ phone numbers.
Look at street signs and shops, and it will help us draw a mind map and ____54____ us getting lost.
Taking a break from electronic products now and ____55____ is the easiest way.

Are you nervous when you stand in front of the public? Are you afraid of making a speech? Li Jun, a middle school boy, felt shy when he was making a speech the other day. ___56___ first, Li thought it quite easy because he had already practiced at ___57___ (little) five times. “I was totally wrong. It was very different and much ___58___ (hard) than talking to my classmates during playtime.” Li said. “I felt ___59___ (help) and wanted to leave the classroom quickly.”
Li is not alone. Many middle school students now have the same problem: they can talk about their ideas freely with their best friends after class, ___60___ they can’t speak in public. According to Zhou Hong, ___61___ teacher from a university, the main reason is that schools in China pay more attention to ___62___ (write) instead of speaking.
Zhou hopes schools can give students more chances to open their mouths, such as speech competitions, English corners and class discussions. He also offers some ___63___ (suggest) to students. “During your free time, you should practice more. When you’re speaking in public, take it easy. Just imagine you’re talking to nobody and speak up your ideas ___64___ (clear), which helps you to be at the ____65____ (high) of your powers.” Zhou said. “That makes a fine public speech and you will be happy.”
