Understanding China requires exploring its ancient capitals, the lifeblood of its civilization. These cities, where empires rose and fell and cultures intertwined, shaped China’s enduring identity.
Xi’an: The Eternal Capital
Xi’an, historically known as Chang’an, served as the capital for thirteen dynasties, including the Qin, Western Han, and Tang. As the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, Xi’an blossomed into one of the world’s first truly metropolitan cities. It safeguards the world-renowned Terracotta Army and the well-preserved Ming Dynasty city wall, earning Xi’an the title of a “Living History Museum.”
Luoyang: The Sacred Center
Luoyang, also hosting thirteen dynasties, is revered as the spiritual heartland of Chinese civilization. It flourished as the capital during the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Northern Wei Dynasty, and notably under Empress Wu Zetian, China’s only female emperor. Its profound spiritual significance is carved into the Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The White Horse Temple, traditionally recognized as China’s first Buddhist temple, marks the arrival of Buddhism into Chinese culture.
Nanjing: The Southern Capital of Resilience
Nanjing, meaning “Southern Capital,” served as the seat of power for ten dynasties, including the early Ming and the Republic of China. The city’s history is a story of glory, destruction, and rebirth, showing the repeating patterns of Chinese history. Landmarks like the grand Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, the colossal Ming Dynasty city wall, and the solemn memorials to its tragic past collectively narrate the story of this resilient “City of Memories.”
1. What do the three ancient capitals have in common?
A. They all served as capitals during the Tang Dynasty.
B. They are all home to UNESCO World Heritage sites.
C. They all have well-preserved ancient city walls.
D. They all served as political centers for many dynasties.
2. What is special about Nanjing according to the text?
A. It was once the eastern starting point of the Silk Road.
B. It is known as the spiritual heartland of Chinese civilization.
C. Its history reflects a pattern of destruction and reconstruction.
D. It has China’s first Buddhist temple.
3. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A personal travel journal. B. A historical research paper.

Almost every Monday morning, plenty of us can be found daydreaming about taking off and escaping the daily routine. Few of us, once we’re buried in grown up employment and adult responsibilities, have the courage to actually do it. But one couple did.
Josie Scott and Graeme Ramsey, based in New Zealand, decided to take a one-year vacation from their lives. Rather than committing to a full-time position as beach-goers or backpackers, they chose to volunteer in Ghana for a year, in a small village called Dzita.
Having stayed at MMT, a not-for-profit lodge that offers accommodation and helps the functioning of an NGO, Dream Big Ghana, which works to improve the public hygiene (卫生), education and health care for local people before, Josie knew how it worked and about the good it did with the local community. She then volunteered herself and Graeme to run the lodge for a year.
And so began a year of African adventure away from everything they were used to. They greeted guests and took bookings, cooked and cleaned, shopped and swam and finally become a part of this tiny village community.
One year on and Josie and Graeme are now back in New Zealand adjusting to life at home. The couple think they’ve got a lot from that experience, the most important of which is patience. “Time is viewed differently and so expecting things to run the same way as they do in New Zealand is going to lead to disappointment. Everything gets done in its own time, and that was a very valuable lesson to learn. People are also very friendly in Ghana, but it actually takes a long time to really get to know what’s going on. Being patient and building relationships slowly is very rewarding. Using what we have rather than what we think we need was another lesson. Living outside the city with few resources is a good way to learn to make good use of what’s around us.”
4. Why do we often fail to escape from the daily routine?
A. Because our kids are growing up.
B. Because we are not confident enough.
C. Because we have many duties to perform.
D. Because we are employed in big businesses.
5. What does the underlined word “lodge” mean in the third paragraph?
A. A small hotel. B. A charity foundation.
C. A royal fountain. D. A travel agency.
6. What did the couple do during their stay in Africa?
A. Go to different beaches. B. Set up their own company.
C. Hike with their backpacks. D. Work in the local community.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Patience and adapting to local rhythms are valuable lessons.
B. They found city life in New Zealand meaningless.
C. They will move to Ghana to work full-time.
D. Ghana’s way of life is more efficient than the other places.
C 5. A 6. D 7. A

根据第一段中“Almost every Monday morning, plenty of us can be found daydreaming about taking off and escaping the daily routine. Few of us, once we’re buried in grown up employment and adult responsibilities, have the courage to actually do it. (几乎每个星期一的早晨,我们中的许多人都会做着逃离日常生活的白日梦。一旦我们深陷成年人的工作和成年人的责任之中,很少有人有勇气真正去做这件事)”可知,我们常常无法逃离日常生活是因为我们有许多责任要履行。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“Having stayed at MMT, a not-for-profit lodge that offers accommodation... (曾住过MMT,一个提供住宿的非营利性lodge……)”中“stayed at MMT”和“that offers accommodation”可推知,lodge是指提供住宿的地方,类似于小旅馆。
根据第三段“Having stayed at MMT, a not-for-profit lodge that offers accommodation and helps the functioning of an NGO, Dream Big Ghana, which works to improve the public hygiene (卫生), education and health care for local people before, Josie knew how it worked and about the good it did with the local community. She then volunteered herself and Graeme to run the lodge for a year.(乔西此前曾入住过 MMT 民宿。这是一家非营利性民宿,既提供住宿,也协助非政府组织 “大梦加纳” 开展工作。该组织致力于改善当地民众的公共卫生、教育及医疗服务。因此乔西十分了解这家民宿的运营模式,也清楚它为当地社区带来的积极影响。随后,她主动和格雷姆一起报名,志愿运营这家民宿一年)”根据第四段中“And so began a year of African adventure away from everything they were used to. They greeted guests and took bookings, cooked and cleaned, shopped and swam and finally become a part of this tiny village community. (于是,他们开始了一年的非洲冒险之旅,远离了他们所习惯的一切。他们迎接客人、接受预订、做饭、打扫、购物、游泳,并最终成为这个小村庄社区的一部分)”可知,这对夫妇在非洲期间在当地社区工作。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The couple think they’ve got a lot from that experience, the most important of which is patience.(这对夫妇认为他们从那段经历中获益良多,其中最重要的是耐心)”和“Time is viewed differently and so expecting things to run the same way as they do in New Zealand is going to lead to disappointment. Everything gets done in its own time, and that was a very valuable lesson to learn. People are also very friendly in Ghana, but it actually takes a long time to really get to know what’s going on. Being patient and building relationships slowly is very rewarding.(对时间的看法不同,所以期望事情像在新西兰那样运作会导致失望。每件事都会在它该完成的时候完成,这是非常宝贵的一课。加纳人也非常友好,但要真正了解情况确实需要很长时间。保持耐心并慢慢建立关系是非常有意义的)”可推知,作者告诉我们的宝贵经验是要有耐心,每件事都会在它该完成的时候完成,要适应当地节奏。
C
The beneficial relationship between dogs and humans goes far beyond companionship. Dogs have been part of human society for over 20,000 years. While they initially aided hunters, they soon became household members. Although companion dogs don’t help secure food, mounting evidence suggests they help reduce anxiety and improve social skills. Recent research led by Dr. Kikusui Takefumi at Azabu University, published in iScience, longs to explore the underlying mechanism. It reveals that the microbes (微生物) in the gut (肠道) of dog owners differ significantly from those of non-owners, which at least partially explains the behavioral differences.
The brain does not operate in isolation. Microbes elsewhere in the body, particularly in the gut, produce compounds that influence brain function. These microbes are shaped by diet, stress, pollutants, and exercise. Knowing from prior work that dog ownership affects the human gut microbes, Dr. Kikusui wondered whether that microbe transfer from dogs might bring psychological benefits. To test this, he conducted an experiment with 343 participants in Tokyo.
The study focused specifically on teenagers, as adolescence is a crucial period for brain development where social interactions have lasting mental effects. Psychological analysis of 96 dog-owning teens and 247 non-owning teens showed, as expected, that dog owners had fewer social problems. More particularly, they exhibited less aggressive and problematic behavior. Saliva (唾液) samples revealed that certain strains (菌株) were more plentiful in dog owners. Further analysis linked lower levels of these key stains to more problematic behaviors, suggesting that microbes introduced by dogs may healthily influence their owners’ brains.
The ideal next step — introducing dog microbes into non-owning teens. Given that it is an ethically grey area, he worked instead with mice. He cultured microbe samples from both teen groups and fed them to 24 mice. After six weeks, mice social tests measured how long they sniffed unfamiliar mice. Remarkably, mice with dog-owner microbes sniffed unfamiliar mice for up to 14 seconds, versus six seconds for the others.
Dr. Kikusui admits direct comparisons between mouse and human behavior are not ideal, but his findings nevertheless indicate that microbial changes from dog ownership influence the brain. If true, the path to a healthier mind might begin not with self-reflection, but with a gentle petting and a few affectionate licks.
8. What is the main purpose of Dr. Kikusui’s study?
A. To suggest that dogs can help reduce anxiety.
B. To explore the key factor for brain development.
C. To clarify the various microbes in dog-owners’ guts.
D. To figure out why dog owners possess better social skills.
9. According to prior work, what did Dr. Kikusui assume before the experiment?
A. Dog ownership has an effect on the human gut microbes.
B. Microbes from dogs might psychologically benefit humans.
C. Diet, exercise and stress are the factors to influence the microbes.
D. Teenagers may transfer certain strains from their social interaction.
10. Why did Dr. Kikusui’s study focus on teenagers?
A. Because they have more social problems.
B. Because they are more likely to own dogs than adults.
C. Because saliva samples are easier to collect from teens.
D. Because social interactions will affect teens’ development.
11. What can we learn about the mouse experiment?
A. It acted as an alternative when human testing wasn’t allowed.
B. It successfully dismissed the doubts about Dr. Kikusui’s research.
C. It was ideal because it was easy to introduce dog microbes to mice.
D. It directly proved the comparisons between mouse and human behavior.
D 9. B 10. D 11. A

根据第四段“Given that it is an ethically grey area, he worked instead with mice.(鉴于这是一个道德上较为模糊的领域,于是他转而用老鼠进行实验)”可知,这项老鼠实验在人类实验不允许进行的情况下起到了替代作用。
D
In the history of Major League Baseball (MLB), various eras (时代) have defined the game, from the low-scoring dead-ball era to the modern live-ball era, followed by the regrettable steroid (类固醇) era. It seems that the history of this great American pastime is being rewritten once again.
Based on more than 100,000 games and 220,000 individual hits, a new study has found that over 500 home runs (本垒打) since 2010 can be put down to higher-than-average temperatures resulting from climate change — with several hundred more home runs per season to come if global warming continues. “There’s a clear physical mechanism at play — warmer temperatures reduce the density of air and a batted ball is consequently going to fly farther on a warm day,” said senior author Justin Mankin.
The researchers also accounted for a host of potential variables, such as the use of performance-enhancing drugs, the different dimensions of stadiums, the construction of bats and ball, and other technology intended for batters’ performance enhancement. The fact is that these variables don’t vary day to day or they won’t be affected if a day is unreasonably warm or cold.
This study is far from the first time that this idea of hotter weather juicing home run statistics has been proposed. During a broadcast, Tim McCarver, a major league catcher, once stated that climate change could be impacting the long ball by “making the air thin”. However, the comment was not well received at the time with a well-known sports website calling the theory “one of the stupidest things ever spoken on a television broadcast”.
When examining each major league ballpark in the US to measure how the average number of home runs per year could rise, they found that the open-air Wrigley Field — which hosts only a limited number of night games due to the local law — would experience more than 15 home runs per season. However, the roofed Tropicana Field would remain the level of one home run or less no matter how hot it gets outside.
“What these results make clear is that climate change is fundamentally going to transform nearly all aspects of society, from cultural touchstones like baseball to basic human well-being,” Mankin said. “Nothing can escape.”
12. What’s the focus of the new study?
A. The climatic conditions ideal for home runs.
B. The impact of MLB events on climate change.
C. The correlation between warm air and home runs.
D. The physics behind long-distance batted baseballs.
13. What is the implication of researchers’ taking account of potential baseball-related factors?
A. Batters’ performance can be improved in various ways.
B. The count of home runs varies slightly on a daily basis.
C. Baseball data collection is a complicated task.
D. Their findings are objective and reliable.
14. Which of the following might be Tim McCarver’s remark on the new study?
A. It was well-designed but poorly conducted.
B. It’s been proven effective in studying ball games.
C. It provided solid evidence for his previous claim.
D. It was a good start but the statistics were limited.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Climate-Ball Era of MLB Could Be Dawning
B. How MLB Should Respond to the Rising Temperatures
C. The American Culture Is Undergoing a New Revolution
D. How Climate Change Is Shaping Americans’ Leisure Activities
C 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第二段“Based on more than 100,000 games and 220,000 individual hits, a new study has found that over 500 home runs (本垒打) since 2010 can be put down to higher-than-average temperatures resulting from climate change — with several hundred more home runs per season to come if global warming continues. “There’s a clear physical mechanism at play — warmer temperatures reduce the density of air and a batted ball is consequently going to fly farther on a warm day,” said senior author Justin Mankin.(基于超过10万场比赛和22万次个人击球,一项新研究发现,自2010年以来,超过500个本垒打可以归因于气候变化导致的高于平均水平的温度——如果全球变暖持续下去,每个赛季还将增加数百个本垒打。资深作者Justin Mankin说:“这里有一个明确的物理机制在起作用——温度升高会降低空气密度,因此在温暖的天气里,击出的球会飞得更远。”)”可知,新研究的重点是温暖空气与本垒打数量之间的关联。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The researchers also accounted for a host of potential variables, such as the use of performance-enhancing drugs, the different dimensions of stadiums, the construction of bats and ball, and other technology intended for batters’ performance enhancement. The fact is that these variables don’t vary day to day or they won’t be affected if a day is unreasonably warm or cold. (研究人员还考虑了一系列潜在变量,如兴奋剂的使用、体育场的不同尺寸、球棒和球的构造,以及其他旨在提高击球手表现的技术。事实是,这些变量不会日复一日地变化,也不会因为某一天异常温暖或寒冷而受到影响。)”可知,研究人员排除各类干扰因素,让研究发现客观可靠。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“During a broadcast, Tim McCarver, a major league catcher, once stated that climate change could be impacting the long ball by “making the air thin”. (在一次广播中,大联盟捕手Tim McCarver曾表示,气候变化可能通过“使空气变稀薄”来影响本垒打。)”可知,Tim McCarver此前曾提出过气候变化影响本垒打的观点,而新研究为他的这一说法提供了确凿证据。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“In the history of Major League Baseball (MLB), various eras (时代) have defined the game, from the low-scoring dead-ball era to the modern live-ball era, followed by the regrettable steroid (类固醇) era.(在美国职业棒球大联盟的历史上,不同的时代定义了这项运动,从低得分的死球时代到现代的活球时代,随后是令人遗憾的类固醇时代。)” “The Climate-Ball Era of MLB Could Be Dawning”最能概括全文主旨。
In today’s digital age, screens are everywhere. From online classes to social media and video games, technology is deeply woven into the daily lives of high school students. While digital devices offer endless convenience and entertainment, spending too much time on them can negatively affect your sleep, mood, and academic performance. ____16____.
● Track your current habits.
Before making changes, you need to know exactly where your time goes. Most smartphones have built-in screen time trackers that show how many hours you spend on specific apps. You might be shocked to discover that you spend three hours a day scrolling through short videos. ____17____. Once you identify the apps that consume most of your time, you can start making conscious decisions to reduce them.
● ____18____
Not all screen time is created equal. Spending two hours researching for a history project is obviously more productive than spending two hours aimlessly browsing social media. When setting your screen time goals, differentiate between necessary and recreational use. You don’t have to cut out technology completely. Instead, aim to limit passive consumption while keeping the active, purposeful use that supports your learning and growth.
● Create tech-free zones.
Another effective way to manage screen time is to establish physical boundaries in your home. Designate certain areas, such as the dining table or your bed, as tech-free zones. When you eat without a phone, you can actually taste your food and connect with your family. Similarly, keeping devices out of the bedroom helps your brain associate the bed with sleep rather than stimulation. ____19____, making it much easier to fall asleep at night.
● Replace screen time with offline activities.
If you simply try to stop using your phone, you will likely feel bored and quickly return to your old habits. The key is to fill the void with engaging real-world activities. Pick up a book that you’ve been meaning to read, go outside for a walk, or spend time practicing a musical instrument. ____20____. By gradually substituting digital entertainment with physical and social activities, you will find that you rely less on screens to pass the time.
A. Focus on quality over quantity.
B. This realization is the first step toward change
C. They will not only enrich your life but also reduce your urge to check your phone
D. However, breaking free from the screen doesn’t mean you have to abandon your phone entirely
E. These boundaries send a clear signal to your brain to wind down
F. Therefore, it is essential to develop healthier screen habits
G. Set reasonable goals for yourself
F 17. B 18. A 19. E 20. C

前文“You might be shocked to discover that you spend three hours a day scrolling through short videos.(你可能会惊讶地发现,你每天会花三个小时浏览短视频。)”
空格处是本段小标题,由空后“When setting your screen time goals, differentiate between necessary and recreational use. You don’t have to cut out technology completely. Instead, aim to limit passive consumption while keeping the active, purposeful use that supports your learning and growth.(在设定屏幕使用时间目标时,要区分必要使用和娱乐性使用。你不必完全摒弃科技产品。相反,应努力限制被动消费,同时保持积极、有目的的使用,以支持你的学习和成长。)”可知,本段核心内容是区分必要用屏和娱乐用屏、不彻底戒掉电子产品、合理规划用时,A选项“Focus on quality over quantity.(注重质量而非数量。)”说明在定目标的时候要重质量而非数量,也就是要区分用屏的目的,概括了本段内容,可作为小标题。
【19题详解】
前文“Another effective way to manage screen time is to establish physical boundaries in your home. Designate certain areas, such as the dining table or your bed, as tech-free zones.(另一种有效管理屏幕时间的方法是在家中设立物理界限。指定某些区域,比如餐桌或床,为无科技区域。)”和“Similarly, keeping devices out of the bedroom helps your brain associate the bed with sleep rather than stimulation.(同样,将设备留在卧室之外有助于你的大脑将床与睡眠联系起来,而不是与刺激活动联系在一起。)”提到在家划定无电子区域,远离卧室电子产品,E选项“These boundaries send a clear signal to your brain to wind down(这些界限向你的大脑发送了一个明确的信号,让你放松下来)”中These boundaries指代上文划定的物理无屏幕界限,承接上文,说明该做法能让大脑放松,衔接后文“making it much easier to fall asleep at night(这样就能更容易地在晚上入睡)”更容易入睡。
前文“Pick up a book that you’ve been meaning to read, go outside for a walk, or spend time practicing a musical instrument.(拿起一本你一直想读的书,出去散散步,或者花些时间练习一种乐器。)”列举读书、散步、练乐器等线下活动,C选项“They will not only enrich your life but also reduce your urge to check your phone(它们不仅会丰富你的生活,还会减少你查看手机的冲动)”中的They指代这些现实活动,说明线下活动的两大好处,完美总结本段主旨,收尾自然。

Tessa never spoke unless she had to. Every time she opened her mouth, people would stare at her mouth. She had heard the whispers — “like a frog” — and learned to keep quiet, feeling extremely bad about her appearance.
She spent her days hiding in corners: the back of the classroom, the farthest table in the library, the bench (长椅) behind the gym. She carried a book everywhere, holding it close like a shelter. But it was not a textbook. It was field guides, filled with leaves and flowers, their names and secrets. She knew every plant around the school, though no one knew she did.
One afternoon in biology class, Ms Taylor announced a project. Each student had to collect different plants, press them, and put them on paper with descriptions.
Her classmates were not happy about it. Tessa said nothing, but something woke up inside her quiet heart.
After school, she walked to the woods behind the football field, walking slowly with her eyes on the ground. She found a lovely branch of yarrow (蓍草), a heart-shaped violet leaf, and a soft lamb’s ear leaf, picking each one carefully. By the playground, she discovered a tiny plot of moss, no bigger than her finger. On her way back, she picked a maple leaf still holding its autumn red.
Back home, she pressed them between the pages of an old dictionary. Three days later, she took them out, finding them flat and perfect. She arranged them on a white paper, leaving space for each one. Then she began to write. Her handwriting was small and steady, each letter formed with care. Under each plant, she put the common name, the scientific name, where she found it, and a small detail only she would have noticed.
She finished late at night. The next morning, she slipped her work into all students’ homework, saying nothing. She returned to her seat, opening a book as usual. She expected nothing. She never did.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
But when the teacher walked into the classroom, she was holding Tessa’s paper.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The students’ reaction gave her a great deal of confidence.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
But when the teacher walked into the classroom, she was holding Tessa’s paper. She held it up for everyone to see, a big smile on her face. “Look at this wonderful work!” she said loudly. “Tessa knew every plant’s name, even the smallest details. This is amazing!” All the students leaned forward, their eyes wide with surprise. Then someone started clapping. Soon the whole class joined in, their hands coming together. Tessa felt her face burning, her eyes fixed on her desk.
The students’ reaction gave her a great deal of confidence. For the first time, she felt truly seen — not for her mouth, but for what she knew and could do. After that day, she began to change. She raised her hand in class, her voice shaking at first but growing stronger. She talked to her classmates during breaks, finding them kind and curious. More of her good sides came out, surprising everyone, including herself. Slowly, she came to understand that a person’s worth cannot be judged by appearance alone.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
But when the teacher walked into the classroom, she was holding Tessa’s paper.
