When I got to college, I decided to change my hairstyle. I had my curly (卷曲的) hair straightened (拉直). However, it cost me $700 once every six months to do this. People said I was crazy to spend that much on my hair. But I was willing to do anything to never again see that curly-haired girl in the mirror (镜子).

When I arrived there, the stylist, Jacquai, was waiting for me.
“Do you really think this will work?” I asked.
“No curly hair is hopeless,” she replied. “You just haven’t found a way to work with it. That’s all.”

Hummingbirds (蜂鸟) are one of the smallest birds in the world. They are found only in America.
They are called hummingbirds because they make a humming noise when they fly. They make this noise because they beat their wings so fast. Hummingbirds are well known for their ability to move their wings fast. They can move their wings up to 70 times in a second.
Most of them are 7.5-13 cm long. The Bee Hummingbird is the smallest at just 5 cm. The largest is the Giant Hummingbird reaching over 20cm. Most hummingbirds weigh less than 4 grams. They eat mostly nectar (花蜜), and they also eat insects. They need to eat at least half their body weight of food each day.
No other bird on Earth can fly like a hummingbird. They can move their wings in a circle (圆圈), so they can fly forwards, backwards, up, down, sideways and hover (盘旋) in mid air. This type of flying can be quite an exercise. That’s why hummingbirds eat a lot of food each day.
Hummingbirds have no sense of smell but have very good eyesight. They can see and hear better than humans. They find their food through bright colours. They like red flowers. I can’t forget he played with me when I was3-4 years old. He taught me how to read when I was at the age of 5. He took care of me all night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He also cared about my lessons and often helped me get ready for examinations. Later he sent me to New Delhi for the best education. Whenever I needed money, he never refused. He always managed money for my studies.
Two years ago, I got a job at a hospital in New Delhi. When I helped my first patient, I got a strong feeling of satisfaction. When I got my first salary (薪水) which was about ten times more than my pocket money, I spent it all on myself.

根据第一段“making a small amount of money with difficulty”(艰难地赚取微薄收入)、“doing a part-time job at home”(在家做兼职)以及“work till late night”(工作到深夜),这些细节都生动地体现了父亲勤劳的特质。
【52题详解】

【53题详解】
按原文时间顺序梳理:根据第一段“Being a child, I was unable to understand him.”可知,儿时,作者无法理解父亲,c排第一;根据第二段“Later he sent me to New Delhi for the best education.”可知,父亲送作者去接受最好的教育,a排第二;根据第四段“He also told him that I had a higher salary than him at the end of his work.”可知,作者有了工作,薪水比父亲职业生涯末期的还高,e排第三;根据第四段“A dream, his son should become better than himself came true.”可知,父亲认为他的梦想实现了,b排第四;再根据第五段“I could understand the meaning of my father’s aspirations.”可知,作者理解了父亲的愿望,d排第五。因此,故事发展顺序为:c-a-e-b-d。

They are often seen flying near small flowers because they can’t reach deep in larger flowers. They can visit over a thousand flowers every day.

【答案】
例文
Hello! Everyone! I’m Helen. I want to join the Students’ Union and do something to protect animals. I’m glad to make a speech here.
I have always loved nature and treated animals with kindness. Last year, I took part in raising money for “Save China’s Pandas”. I also visited nearby wetlands to count birds, and was upset to find their numbers were getting smaller. Animals are our close friends, so it’s our duty to protect them. Protecting animals is just protecting ourselves. If I join the Students’ Union, I will tell more people about the importance of animal protection. I hope we can build a warm home for all animals together.
Thanks for listening!
