Last summer, a trip to western Hunan with my parents opened a new world of local culture to me. I once imagined mountain villages as quiet and boring places, yet a unique folk art totally changed my impression — Miao painting.
The small village we visited is well-known for this time-honored craft. As our guide introduced, Miao painting, a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产), has existed for hundreds of years. With bright colors and plain lines, it vividly presents flowers, birds and various traditional stories of the Miao people.
I was lucky enough to learn painting from an elderly master. Far from being an easy job, it brought me plenty of trouble at first. Messy lines and mismatched colors made me feel upset and even want to quit. “This art is more than just pictures. It records our history and expresses our love for life,” the master told me gently. After repeated attempts and careful changes, I finally finished a lovely phoenix (凤凰).
Great pride filled my heart when I stared at my simple but meaningful work. As a precious treasure of Hunan culture, Miao painting carries the Miao people’s stories and spirits passed down through generations. It is hoped that more teenagers will know about it and keep this wonderful art alive. Truly, traditional culture shines brightly all the time.
24. How did the writer feel about mountain villages before the trip?
A. Quiet and boring. B. Noisy and modern. C. Bright and lively.
25. What do we know about Miao Painting from the passage?
A. It is a modern new art popular in big cities.
B. It only describes beautiful flowers and lovely birds.
C. It has a long history and shows rich cultural meanings.
26. What does the underlined word “quit” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. cheer up. B. give up. C. show up.
27. What’s the writer’s attitude towards Miao Painting?
A. Proud. B. Doubted. C. Worried.
C
The Uyuni Salt Flats, located in southwestern Bolivia, is known as the “Mirror of the Sky”. After the rain, this place looks like a mirror. It reflects the sky so perfectly that you can’t tell where the ground ends and where the sky begins. The amazing mirror effect doesn’t come out of thin air. It is made possible by three key factors (要素).
The first and most important factor is the flat ground. The ground of the Uyuni Salt Flats is one of the flattest on Earth. The salt flat was formed when ancient lakes dried up over time. When the water of these lakes evaporated (蒸发), a thick and flat layer (层) of salt was left behind. This made the ground almost perfectly flat. Therefore, when it rains, the water doesn’t collect in water holes. Instead, it forms an even layer of water on the top of the salt. This is what creates the huge natural mirror.
The rainfall (降雨量) also plays an important role. It can’t be a storm. Just enough rain to cover the layer of salt is perfect. If the rain is heavy, water holes will form and the mirror effect will be lost. The mirror effect mainly appears during the rainy season, which runs from December to March.
Besides, calm weather is necessary for the clear mirror effect. Even a small wind can make waves on the water. These waves will break up the clear reflection and take away the magical experience.
In short, the Uyuni Salt Flats is famous for its amazing “sky mirror” scene, which is created by its extremely flat land, proper rainfall and calm weather. Come and enjoy this fantastic natural scenery!

29. What are the key factors for the mirror effect?

30. When is the best time to visit the Uyuni Salt Flats?
A. May. B. July. C. February.

A. B. . C.

Through trial and error, Kang Xiaolong learns to train smart robots. He works at a special robot center in Lanzhou. For him, training robots is just like teaching little kids. He has to guide and correct their actions again and again.
Kang graduated from Lanzhou University in 2020. He once worked in other fields before becoming a robot trainer in 2025. He loves this new job because it mixes different kinds of knowledge and brings him great fun every day.
It is not easy to train a robot well. Engineers first show standard movements and record them carefully. Then they change the data and test on computers. Finally, they let real robots try. The machines are expensive and easy to break, so to keep robots safe, workers always stay nearby. Kang’s team trains robots for different shows and public activities. Now he has a new dream: to combine robots with local culture. He hopes robots can perform local dances or speak special local words, so that local culture can be spread to other places. Though some difficult movements are hard to copy, robots are getting better day by day.
Kang doesn’t want robots to take people’s place in daily life. He just wishes robots can work better with humans and bring joy to people.
56. Where does Kang Xiaolong work?
57. When did Kang begin to train robots?
58. Why do workers always stay near robots?
59. Do you think it is a good idea to let robots show local culture? Why or why not?
