Among all traditional Chinese operas, the types of facial makeup in Beijing Opera (京剧脸谱)have developed into the most systematic (系统化的)ones. Different colors are used to show different characters. But at first, only three colors were used: red, white and black.
Red is generally used to show that a role is honest and loyal (忠诚的). In fact, the red was originally just to show the color of people's skin. But because many roles used red and black to show they were very brave and honest, red gradually had another meaning. A typical “red full face” is Guan Yu, known for his loyalty to Liu Bei.
The role with a white face commonly seen on the stage is bad in human nature. The typical character is Cao Cao, who was powerful but cruel in the time of the Three Kingdoms.
The black face shows either a rude and brave character or a fair and selfless personality (品格). Typical characters of the former are Zhang Fei with a black cross butterfly face and Li Kui, and a typical character of the latter is Bao Zheng, a fearless and fair official of the Song Dynasty.
Later, other colors are gradually added to them, such as purple to show justice (正义); yellow used for soldiers, to show bravery; blue, showing that a character has a strong personality.
( )62. Which color was not used in the facial makeup in Beijing Opera at first?

Have you ever wondered why we say maidongxi instead of mainanbei, and shangcesuo rather than xiacesuo? These directional words in Chinese are not only about giving directions but also carry a wealth of history and culture.
East/west or south/north One theory says that in the Tang Dynasty, when shopping, people in Chang'an usually went to the East Market first, and then the West Market. And these markets became more and more popular as time went by. Gradually, people started to describe shopping as maidongxi.
Left or right In Chinese, we say yijian xiangzuo when we have different opinions. Why is it not yijian xiangyou? Most people today are righthanded. They feel uncomfortable if they try to use their left hands to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. In ancient Chinese, “left” was related to being different, such as in yijian xiangzuo. If people don't accept common beliefs or always use some nontraditional ways to achieve a goal or solve problems, we say they are following pangmenzuodao.
Up or down We use shangcesuo to mean “go to the bathroom” and xiachufang to mean “go to the kitchen”. Why? In ancient times, houses were laid out in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeast of the house and the kitchen in the southeastern part. On a map, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about north as shang and the south as xia. Therefore, people would say they were going “up” to the bathroom and “down” to the kitchen.
These directional words help us find our ways and get__a__glimpse__into the interesting history and culture of ancient China as well. Next time when you use them, maybe you can think about the special meanings behind them and make your conversations much more fun.
( )66. Why does the writer use shangcesuo and maidongxi in the first paragraph?
A.To tell a story. B.To introduce the topic.
C.To give an example. D.To solve a mystery.
( )67.(跨学科·语文)Which of the following Chinese expressions can be used as an example in “Where to buy things”?
A.东市买骏马,西市买鞍鞯
B.东边日出西边雨
C.青山横北郭,白水绕东城
D.任尔东西南北风
( )68. Which is the right layout of the ancient house?
( )69. In which of the following sentences can we put “get a glimpse into”?
A.It's really fun to ________ camping outside, and we all love it.
B.Though you turn down our invitation, we still ________ your coming.
C.The trip to the museum made us ________ the development of science.
D.If you keep buying something expensive, you will ______ your money.

Hi, Peter! I'm glad that you're interested in Chinese culture. I would like to tell you something about Chinese red.
Chinese red is considered as the favourite colour of the Chinese. It usually stands for happiness, and we believe that it can bring us good luck. We use many red objects in the important events or on special occasions. For example, in a wedding, you can see that the bride is in a red wedding dress and that the wedding room is decorated with red. What's more, the houses are also filled with red papercuts, lanterns and Chinese knots during the Spring Festival. Children will get red packets for best wishes as well. Obviously, Chinese red plays an important role and enjoys the highest popularity in China.
I truly hope I can help you understand Chinese red better. And I hope you can come to China for a visit one day!
