It's believed that people reach their mental peak (智力巅峰) in their 20s. However, this isn't completely true. According to a recent study by scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, people are best at doing different things at different ages. They studied many people aged 10 to 90 years old, who were asked to take part in different memory tests.
1.( )At what age can people reach the peak of their attention?
A.18. B.32. C.43. D.50.
2.( )Lisa wants to learn and remember the faces of her new classmates quickly.Who can help her?
A.Lisa's 21yearold cousin. B.Lisa's 32yearold sister.
C.Lisa's 48yearold father. D.Lisa's 67yearold grandfather.
3.( )Which fact does the passage provide?
A.The younger people are, the better memory they have.

Do you ever wish for a better memory during the exam season? If Doraemon were your friend, he might give you his “Memory Bread”. Wait, don't know who Doraemon is?
Doraemon is a round, blueandwhite robotic cat from the 22nd century. He travels back in time to help Nobita (大雄), a kind but lazy boy. Nobita often has trouble with school and life. Doraemon uses tools from the future to solve the boy's problems.
The robotic cat, created by two Japanese artists, first appeared in a magazine in 1969. Since then, he has won the hearts of millions around the world through TV shows, movies and more.
One big reason for his popularity is the 4D pocket on his belly. This magic pocket holds many amazing tools. The “Anywhere Door” is a pink door. Just think of a place, step through the door and there you are. The “Takecopter” is a tiny fan. You can fly as soon as you put it on your head. And if you press “Memory Bread” onto a page and eat it, you'll be able to remember everything on that page. These fun inventions make Doraemon exciting to watch.
But Doraemon is more than fun. It also teaches valuable lessons. In the “Memory Bread” episode (集), for example, Nobita eats too much bread and gets a stomachache. In the end, all the knowledge he ate ends up in the toilet. The message is clear: There's no shortcut (捷径) to learning.
So, kids, though it's fun to dream of magic tools, you already have the power to learn and grow. Even without “Memory Bread”, you can still perform well on your own.
5.( )The writer mentions the “Memory Bread” at the beginning of the passage to ____.
A.explain one of Doraemon's most powerful tools
B.show that Nobita is a lazy boy with poor study habits
C.attract readers' interest by connecting it with exams
D.prove Doraemon's inventions can be helpful in real life
6.( )How does the writer introduce Doraemon to readers?
A.By telling them that two Japanese artists created Doraemon.
B.By describing what Doraemon looks like and how he helps Nobita.
C.By saying that Doraemon has won the hearts of millions around the world.
D.By explaining how Doraemon uses future tools to solve Nobita's problems.
7.( ) The writer writes the last paragraph mainly to ____.
A.encourage hard work and confidence in learning
B.show that tools like “Memory Bread” could be harmful to users
C.warn readers not to eat too much “Memory Bread” like Nobita did
D.tell readers not to watch cartoons like Doraemon during the exam season
8.( )(高阶思维·标题归纳) What can be the best title of the passage?
A.Fun of Doraemon's stories B.Power of learning by yourself
C.Doraemon's magic tools D.The lessons from Doraemon

New research from Tohoku University shows that wasabi (芥末) is good for people's memory. Wasabi is something that people usually eat in Japanese dishes. It is made from the wasabi plant, and has always become popular on Japanese menus.
For further information, a recent study tested people between the ages of sixty and eighty. Some of them took a wasabi extract (提取物) every night before going to bed, while the other testers didn't. After three months, the people who took the wasabi extract did much better in shortterm and longterm memory tests, with scores jumped an average of 18%. However, the other people did not show any improvement.
Scientists already know that wasabi has something different called 6MSITC. It is infrequent in other plants. The researchers think that 6MSITC might do good to the hippocampus (the area that works for memory). Scientists say they will do more research, hoping to help people with memory problems.
Wasabi not only improves the taste of dishes and people's memory, but 6MSITC in wasabi can also help to keep us away from getting ill and offer many other good things to our health as well.
The new research seems to be good news for sushieaters. However, most wasabi in Japan is not real wasabi. Real wasabi is difficult to grow. The plant takes nearly two years to grow up and needs strict temperature, proper sunlight and etc., and, as a result, is very expensive.
9.( )Which country is wasabi popular in?
A.China. B.Japan.
C.Canada. D.America.
10( )What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Who took part in the test. B.How long the research lasted.
C.Why people took the test. D.How scientists carried out the study.
11( )What does the underlined word “infrequent” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Unusual to see. B.Easy to find.
C.Cheap to extract. D.Expensive to buy.
12( )What will the writer most probably talk about next?
A.The way people eat wasabi in Japan.
B.The reason why wasabi is hard to get.
C.The places where real wasabi plants grow.
D.The health problems that wasabi can solve.

Many students have problems with vocabulary when preparing for tests. Here is some advice on how to memorize new words.
Repeated encounters (反复遇见). The usual way of memorizing new words is through repeating them while they're still in your mind. However, simply repeating a word doesn't seem to be useful. But the following way is helpful: repeated encounters. We can memorize words more easily if we've met them at least seven times in our reading. So, read English magazines and newspapers from time to time.
Spacing (间隔) and review. It's necessary to make a plan of your memory work over a period of time. You'd better memorize words day by day instead of doing it in a single day. That's why new vocabulary introduced in one lesson is reviewed in the next lesson, and then in later lessons.
Use it or lose it. Putting words to use in interesting ways helps add them to your longterm memory. In a study of vocabulary learning, students who made up their own sentences with new words memorized them better than those who learned the words separately and silently. Besides, you can imagine a picture when memorizing a new word. That can help a lot.
Mix it up. Let's face it. Learning words can be really boring, but it doesn't have to be. Thanks to the Internet, there are more interesting ways to get the job done. Try watching videos (视频) from Englishspeaking countries and copying the way they speak. You can even upload (上传) your own videos and try becoming a star yourself.
13.( )What is the usual way of memorizing new words according to the text?
A.Making word cards.
B.Reading them aloud.
C.Repeating them while they are in your mind.
D.Reviewing them again and again.
14.( )What will happen if you meet the new words at least seven times in reading?
A.I will read them correctly. B.I will forget them soon.
C.I will feel bored. D.I will memorize them more easily.
15.( ) What kind of students can memorize the words better?
A.Students who have no plans.
B.Students who have enough sleep.
C.Students who learn the words separately and silently.
D.Students who make up their own sentences with new words.
16.( )What is the writer mainly trying to do in the text?
A.Tell us to read more English magazines.
B.Show us some good ways to memorize new words.
C.Ask us to watch videos from English speaking countries.
D.Teach us to make a plan of our memory work.
