Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He suddenly fell ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was a perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them.
One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed (使瘫痪) her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.” At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me walk.”
My dad would cry, every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctors, and my dad — who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture — loved every single child in that hospital.
24. Why did the author’s father work at the local children’s hospital?
A. To make his serious heart condition less serious. B. To keep himself occupied and pleased.
C. To realize his childhood dream. D. To earn money to pay for treatment.
25. How did the author’s father help the paralyzed girl?
A. He helped her practice walking. B. He visited her and made a toy for her.
C. He showed her that she could still do things. D. He painted special pictures for her.
26. What can be learned about the paralyzed girl according to Paragraph 3?
A. She eventually became a unique painter.
B. She was sent home and never seen again.
C. She gradually recovered and walked.
D. She sent the author’s dad a picture painted with her mouth.
27. What message does the passage mainly convey?
A. It’s better to give than to receive. B. A sick person should not focus on his disease.
C. Volunteering is a worthwhile thing to do. D. Love can sometimes bring great results.
C
It is no surprise that within many education systems, wealthier students often test better than poorer students, which education experts often called the “achievement gap”. Sean Reardon, a professor of poverty and inequality in education at Stanford University in California, found that from 1998 to 2010 the achievement gap closed a small amount.
One way to reduce the gap is to offer pre-kindergarten programs to all 3-and 4-year-old kids. Such classes are already being offered in some areas around the United States, including the U. S. capital, Washington, D. C. These programs offer hope for many youngsters. It is more than learning the ABCs or counting to 100. Kids have the chance to learn how to listen, develop social skills, and interact with others.
Vincent Gray, a former mayor of the District of Columbia, says, “We’ve always had some form of early childhood care in the District of Columbia for decades. But what we didn’t have was universal access. And I did the legislation (立法) in 2009 as Chairman of the Council to get it done. And then when I became the mayor, it gave me an incredible opportunity to be able to fully implement (执行) the legislation.”
Gray also explains “Today, most of Washington’s youngest children are in school. The pre-K programs are not a requirement in the city. But almost no parent at this stage is saying ‘I don’t want my child in school.’ They want them in school because there’s not a cost associated with it, other than the cost of them not having the opportunity to learn.”
Generally, wealthier parents have more financial resources to help their children. Educated parents, wealthy or not, might take their children to participate in certain activities instead of attending school at an early age. For example, they may take their children to free events at a public library or recreation (消遣) center. Washington, D. C. also has many free museums.
28. What is finding of Sean Reardon?
A. People have narrowed the achievement gap slightly.
B. People have learnt the meaning of achievement gap fully.
C. People have tried to get rid of the achievement gap gradually.
D. People have known how to reduce the achievement gap greatly.
29. The author used the example of Vincent Gray to show _________.
A. he had accounted for the pre-kindergarten classes in detail
B. he had made good preparations for pre-kindergarten classes
C. he has helped develop pre-kindergarten classes for a long time
D. he had devoted himself to educating pre-kindergarten classes
30. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. The education system reform is popular with the public.
B. The pre-K programs don’t satisfy parents’ requirement.
C. Some parents can afford the cost of their kids’ education.
D. Most parents pay much attention to their kids’ education.
31. What do the educated parents do when educating their children?
A. By always encouraging them in their studies.
B. By making good use of the resources they can get.
C. By offering them various out-of-class activities.
D. By accompanying and playing with them together.
D
Finding trapped people quickly is often the difference between life and death in relief missions. New robot tech is coming to the rescue. Imagine you’re trapped in a collapsed building. Unable to move, you’re forced to wait. Finally, something looks through the crack (裂缝), and you find yourself face-to-face with... a robot?
We have to deal with our fair share of disasters on our little blue planet. These calamities can range from extreme weather events like hurricanes to other naturally occurring phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. There are times when people suffer from intentional injuries, even resulting in death. And for most wildfires, they are simply the unfortunate side effect of human activities. Regardless of the cause, for centuries, humans have set out on search-and-rescue missions to save those left in a disaster’s wake.
But in the past few decades, robots have taken an increasingly active role in these rescue efforts. They have battled their way through disasters. These mechanical rescuers can range from ground to sea to aerial (航空的) vehicles — including unmanned aerial vehicles that don’t just search through disaster areas for survivors, but provide exploration from above. Beyond that, scientists across the globe are building new, creative types of rescue robots.
Many projects still in development draw inspiration from the animal kingdom, mimicking (模仿) designs that nature has perfected to make machines that can move through difficult environments, from droids that look like snakes to a group of autonomous bees. And while many are still years away from being used in actual disasters.
32. Why did the writer use the situation of people being trapped in a collapsed building?
A. To tell people the real scene of the earthquakes.
B To show how people are disappointed in disasters.
C. To stress the importance of waiting in disasters.
D. To introduce a new way of saving during disasters.
33. What does the underlined word “calamities” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Buildings. B. Failures. C. Missions. D. Disasters.
34. What is the advantage of the rescue robots?
A. They are able to increase very quickly in numbers.
B. They can carry out missions in different situations.
C. They would take the place of human completely.
D. They don’t have any side effects of human activities.
35. Where do the scientists get inspirations to make droids?
A. The various animals. B. The science fiction.
C. The personal imagination. D. The harsh environment.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One sunny afternoon, 8-year-old Leo was running after a colorful butterfly around the neighborhood. He laughed as he ran faster, his eyes fixed on the moving wings. He was so caught up in the game that he didn’t notice where he was going. Near the neighbor’s yard, he tripped over a small stone and crashed right into Mrs. Lee’s potted sunflowers — her favorite ones.
The pot broke into pieces, and soil spread all over the path. Leo froze, his laughter gone in a second. Mrs. Lee was always so nice to him — she’d even given him a tiny sunflower plant last spring. He knelt down and tried to put the flowers and soil back into the broken pot, but only made it worse and got his hands all dirty.
He was so scared he’d ruined her hard work that he stepped back, his heart beating fast. He looked at her door, half hoping she hadn’t seen it and half wishing she would come out so he could say sorry right away. However, scared of what Mrs. Lee might say, he turned and ran home as fast as he could. When he pushed open the door, he didn’t even take off his shoes — he just ran to his room and sat on the bed, hands covering his face.
After a few minutes, his mom Clara knocked softly on his door. “Leo? You’re home early, and you ran in so fast. Are you okay?” She eased the door open and saw him sitting with his head down. She walked over and sat next to him, putting a hand on his back. “You look upset. What’s wrong, sweetie?” she asked.
Leo took a deep breath and then told his mom what had happened with tears in his eyes. His mom hugged him gently and said, “It’s okay to make mistakes, but we need to take responsibility.” She took out a new pot and some fresh soil, and then held Leo’s hand. “Let’s go and say sorry and fix it together.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Leo thought for a while and nodded.

W: Can I ask why?
M: It’s a long story. I found the website through an ad while surfing the Internet. I clicked on the link to the website and looked for shoes. The way they advertise their products is attractive.
W: Wow, their website looks cool. So many cool shoes.
M: No, don’t be cheated by Internet images. Let me show you the shoes.
W: Oh, dear! The color seems to be pink, not red.
M: That’s right. But this isn’t the end of the story.
W: What else?
M: When I asked to return them, the seller read my message but he didn’t reply to me until the next day. Can you believe it? Their customer service is absolutely terrible.
W: Well, I’ve learned from your experience. Always shop on the most frequently used websites.
M: Yes.

【原文】 The Brazilian sport of footvolley is a popular activity on sunny days along Rio’s coast. But recently, people stopped to watch a special player, a three-year-old named Floki. But the young player is not a child. Floki is a dog. He is also very good at footvolley. The rules of footvolley are almost the same as beach volleyball. However, the game requires a lower net. Similar to soccer, the rules don’t allow players to use their hands on the ball. Floki jumps up and hits the ball with his mouth. Floki’s owner, Gustavo Rodriguez, is a footvolley trainer. He found Floki’s sporty qualities early on. At just two months old, Floki started playing with small balloons. He would jump in the air to reach them. Floki was a natural. A star was born. The dog appears to understand the basic rules of the game. Seeing social media, we had thought those videos were just cuts, which they used the best takes. But now I feel he is really cool, said Cioli, one viewer of Floki’s videos. Now Rodriguez and Floki live in the capital, Brasilia. However, they often travel to Bahia and other Brazilian states for games.

【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. B

【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中文森特·格雷的话“We’ve always had some form of early childhood care in the District of Columbia for decades. But what we didn’t have was universal access. And I did the legislation (立法) in 2009 as Chairman of the Council to get it done. And then when I became the mayor, it gave me an incredible opportunity to be able to fully implement (执行) the legislation.(几十年来,华盛顿哥伦比亚特区一直有某种形式的幼儿保育服务。但我们此前没有实现全民可享的学前教育。2009年,我以市议会议长的身份推动了相关立法,而后成为市长后,我又获得了绝佳的机会来全面执行这项立法。)”可知,作者举文森特·格雷的例子是为了说明他长期助力学前教育课程的发展。故选C项。

B. To show how people are disappointed in disasters.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. B 35. A
【解析】

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Leo thought for a while and nodded.

To his surprise, Mrs. Lee’s face softened into a smile.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Leo thought for a while and nodded. They walked to Mrs. Lee’s gate together, with the new pot pressed against Leo’s side. When they arrived, Mrs. Lee was already outside, sweeping the spilled soil into a small pile. When she saw Leo, her eyes widened, but before she could speak, he stepped forward and said with his head down, “I broke your pot. It was an accident. I brought a new pot to help plant your sunflowers again, if you’ll let me.” He looked up, worried she’d be angry.
To his surprise, Mrs. Lee’s face softened into a smile. “Of course you can, Leo, I’m proud of you for telling the truth — that’s the hardest part.” Together, the three of them carefully lifted the sunflowers into the new pot. Leo patted the soil gently, while Clara helped straighten the plant. Mrs. Lee then fetched her green watering can and poured the cold water gently around the roots. When they finished, Mrs. Lee picked a small sunflower and gave it to Leo. “This is for being honest and responsible,” she said.
