Los Angeles is great, but sometimes you need a change. If you only have one day to spare, consider one of these quick day trips from Los Angeles to some amazing nearby destinations.
Palm Springs
If you want to exercise, check out the Indian Canyons that offer hiking trails (路线) and different attractive views. If relaxation is your goal, shop at the stores in Cabazon, or just sit by the pool. You can see works of famous artists including Picasso and Warhol in the Palm Spring Art Museum but the works are not for sale.
Solana Beach
It’s easy to get there from L. A. by train. And it’s a perfect way to day-trip because all the places are within walking distance of the station. Head down to the beach at Fletcher Cover or walk along the Cedros Design District for window shopping.
Balboa Island
Visitors can enter the man-made island by car, but it’s far easier and more fun to park your car on the Balboa Peninsula and take the boat for a quick trip across the water. Walk along Marine Avenue, the island’s main street. Here you’ll find plenty of restaurants, gift shops, and you can learn some local history in Island Museum.
San Juan Capistrano
A piece of California history and an old town make San Juan Capistrano an unusual day-trip destination with a lot of beauty and a little learning. If you have your heart set on getting up close with some animals, pay a visit to Petting Zoo. You can also learn some local history in the museum, which is perfect for a walking tour.

When Harrison School District 2 turned to e-learning last spring, they made sure to provide each student with a laptop and the tools needed to succeed at home. But one remaining need in many families was Internet access (接入).
Christine O’Brien, spokesperson for District 2 said, “When you had many people learning and working from home, sometimes there were Internet problems. We wanted to avoid that and make sure students in our district could have equal chances to learn and that our families could learn from home as well.”
O’Brien said that this year they made sure to survey each of their students to see who exactly needed the Internet.
“This year we were really specific about asking whether families had Internet service at home without a phone,” she said. They discovered that about a thousand families needed some sort of Internet connection.
And that’s where Altia came into play. A local software company heard there was an Internet shortage for students and it stepped in to see how they could help. Teaming up with local foundations (基金会), they were able to provide a monthly Internet service that allows many people to have Internet access at the same time. Mike Juran, CEO of Altia said, “At Altia we talked to Randy Rocha at District 2 and I just put out an email to friends and people that I knew and that made its way back to Pikes Peak Community Foundation and Norwood Foundation and people spread that around. Within weeks we were able to get something done.”
“The community came together and helped us piece this part. We worked so hard as a school district to get those devices into the hands of students but this was a piece that we weren’t ready to do. We hadn’t budgeted (预算) for it, so the community’s coming together to help our families in this way was really truly amazing,” said O’Brien.

More than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, most of which were stolen and illegally shipped out (运出) of China during the times of war before 1949. About 1.67 million pieces are housed in more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors.
Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23, 000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.
The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back. In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official channels (渠道) to demand the return of relics.
In 2003, a priceless (无价的) Bronze Pig’s Head (青铜猪头) dating from the Qing Dynasty (清朝) was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago. Macao entrepreneur (企业家) Stanley Ho (何鸿燊) donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.
Although buying-back is the most possible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache.
In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database (数据库) collecting relevant information. It has signed several international agreements with many countries on this matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations.
28. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. We need to forcefully demand the return of lost cultural relics.
B. Private collectors made a fortune by selling cultural relics.
C. The war caused a serious loss of Chinese cultural relics.
D. Countries of the world prefer Chinese cultural relics.
29. How the Bronze Pig’s Head returned to the motherland?
A. Purchase through our government. B. Donate through Stanley Ho.
C. Return through foreign governments. D. Recover through scientists.
30. What efforts have the Chinese government made to recover lost cultural relics?
①Set up a national project to recover.
②Found a database to collect information.
③Sign several international agreements.
④Establish several international organizations.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①②③④
31. Which will be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. The cultural relics to be brought back to China.
B. Some funds raised by the Chinese government.
C. The problems challenging the Chinese government.
D. Some examples of international cooperation.

Preventing the illegal hunting of any creature is hard, especially when small numbers of park workers are often responsible for patrolling (巡逻) large areas. So researchers in Iguazu National Park of Argentina have been exploring new ways to predict where poachers (偷猎者) might strike — and they are turning to new kinds of mapping technology for help. They now use satellite phones in the forest, along with the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (Smart) system.
But Smart technology is only as helpful as the data available to inform it. “The whole situation improved a lot, but the reality is that we are still faced with a high number of hunters,” says Belloni, a leader of the park. Conservationists in Iguazu are thus constantly on the look-out for new ways to map and predict poaching hotspots. One mapping tool could be based on audio (声音). For seven months from August 2018, researchers from Argentina and Brazil used acoustic monitoring methods to map poaching hotspots inside the two national parks.
The system covered about 4,637 sq km area and, by putting the automatic high on trees out of sight of poachers, the team were able to record gunshot sounds up to 2km away from each location. After seven months, they had reported gunshots at 43 sites out of 90, with a range of one to 68 shots per site. The researchers then used this information to make a predictive map of poaching activity. They confirmed that the predictive map was 82% reliable, says Julia Martinez Pardo, a conservation biologist.
The practical application of this system could, in future, further help the workers. By comparing the acoustic monitoring data with the worker’s existing patrol routes, the park staff could establish whether their current tours coincide with (与……一致) the places with greatest gunshot activity. If the maps don’t match, then the patrols could be adjusted.
32. What is the main purpose of the researchers in Iguazu National Park?
A. To study creatures in the forest. B. To predict poachers’ movements.
C. To explore new mapping technology. D. To find evidence of poaching activities.
33. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. Smart technology is not helpful without available data.
B. Acoustic monitoring methods are better than Smart technology.
C. Smart technology is the most effective tool to predict poaching hotspots.
D. Acoustic monitoring methods can help discover new ways to protect animals.
34. How does the author convince the readers in paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By listing figures. D. By providing explanations.
35. The practical application of the system can help the park workers by ______.
A. improving their working clothes
B. telling them when to start their patrols
C. providing them with food
D. showing them where to adjust their patrol routes

How to Be at Peace
Is feeling truly peaceful a day dream? No! With a little work, you can feel calm, cool, and collected. 36 These work based on personal preference, so just find one that works for you!
Go for a walk or run.
Going for a walk or run is a good way to calm yourself down. Getting exercise not only tires us out and lets us release tension, it also gives out endorphins (内啡肽), which are the brain chemical that controls our emotions. 37
38
When we try to be someone that we’re not, it adds tons of stress, guilt, and unhappiness to our lives. We can hope all we want to be a different person than we are, but that’s not really how people work! You just have to be yourself and the person that you are.
Get an inspiration from nature.
39 Listen to the trees. Watch the animals. Do they seem worried about what their brother did last Christmas? Do the trees seem to notice when it starts to rain? No. Nature adapts and embraces (拥抱) every twist and turn in life and you should too.
Create goals.
Having a goal that you can work for can really help when you’re feeling lost and aimless. Really, what’s the point in life if you don’t have something to work towards, right? Find something that you want for yourself and then figure out what you have to do to pursue it. 40
A. Be yourself.
B. Be free of stress.
C. Go sit out in a natural area nearby.
D. Read on to learn how you can find a hobby.
E. Happiness is ahead, and we’re here to show you what to do.
F. Go for a quick jog around the block if you find you’re having a hard time.

My dear Ginger, a female Golden Retriever (金毛犬), came into my life about nine years ago. I named her Ginger because of the color of her coat. At that time, my two cousins were staying with me and my dad. We already had two dogs: Chocolate and Candy, which had been rescued by my younger cousin.
As he loved dogs, I always reminded him that having pets is a big responsibility. Having two dogs was already very taxing. But somehow my younger cousin managed to persuade me to accept another dog as a neighbor wanted to sell his dog cheaply because he couldn’t care for it. That’s how Ginger came into my life.
For the first three years, it was my cousin’s responsibility to care for her. But when my cousin went away to further his studies, I took her under my care and started to spend more time with her. She became my dog. Her intelligence never failed to amaze me. For example, I tried walk her without the leash (链子). To my amazement, after a few times, she would walk on the left side of the road and stop whenever a vehicle passed by.
I also trained her to wait if I started a conversation with someone. Once, I received a call from my friend. While talking to him I wanted to walk Ginger as it looked like it was going to rain. But she just sat still and wouldn’t move. Then I told my friend I would call him again later. Once I disconnected the phone, she stood up and began to walk. It struck me then that she was doing what she had been told: To sit and stay when I was having a conversation.
Ginger had this graceful way of walking. All my neighbors who lived along our walking route knew her. They would greet her by name, and she would respond by wagging her tail. She was also a very protective dog. As my house is in a village, we would get unwelcome visitors.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One hot evening, Ginger was barking non-stop at the shoe cabinet (柜).
I immediately took Ginger to a nearby vet (兽医).

Dear Schoolmates,
With the development of our society, more and more cultural relics are facing the danger of disappearing. So we must try our best to protect them.
As we all know, cultural relics offer us a great opportunity to learn about what happened in the past. Only when they are preserved well can we pass on our culture from generation to generation. As students, we can play a role in protecting them. For example, we can make apps or websites about some cultural relics to tell people the stories behind them. Besides, we can call on international cooperation if it is too hard for ourselves to preserve some badly-damaged cultural relics.
I hope all of us will become concerned about protecting our cultural relics.
Sincerely,
Li Hua

One hot evening, Ginger was barking non-stop at the shoe cabinet. I realized there was something wrong, and then I saw a snake! It was coiled up in the cabinet. Ginger kept barking at it, and the snake was making a strange sound which was very frightening. But Ginger felt no fear at all. She used her paws as if to make the snake go away. Unfortunately, the snake bit Ginger and quickly made its way out of the cabinet and disappeared in the darkness outside. I was heartbroken.
I immediately took Ginger to a nearby vet (兽医). She was vomiting. I kept petting her on the way. She got slightly better. The vet had her checked thoroughly. The vet said that the venom from the snake was not so strong, and Ginger could survive. He gave Ginger some medication. He also suggested that I force-feed her if she refused to eat. I tried that and it worked. Ginger was back to her normal self.

Hello, everyone, I’m Tom. I’d like to share with you some tips to help you love studying! Some of you might see studying as a boring thing, but you can learn to enjoy it, especially for those of you who are at the beginning of high school. First, you’d better pick a quiet area that will help you stay focused. Secondly, it’s a good idea to find study partners with similar habits. Get to know people in your class and ask them about their learning methods. Ask then if they’d like to study with you some time. Thirdly, it’s nice to plan breaks during study time. For every hour that you study, put aside ten minutes of time to relax. Breaks will reduce your stress levels and help you understand what you’ve studied. Finally, set large achievement rewards. For example, if you study all weekend for a mid-term exam and cover all the material, reward yourself with a ticket to a concert on the next weekend. Having an exciting interest in mind while you study will make the whole process more enjoyable.
May you enjoy your studying!
