She arrived with the car windows down, playing his song, Easy Now, as loud as the volume could go. That’s when she told him that he was nominated for a Juno Award, in the category of Reggae Recording of the Year. “I’m so glad that reggae music is being recognized and appreciated here in Canada,” Kairo said. At age 13, Kairo is the youngest artist ever nominated for Reggae Recording of the Year at the Junos. “It’s really special to be recognized at such a young age, and it motivates me to keep making more music,” said Kairo. Kairo’s mom, Kim, recalls her son being interested in music from a very young age. “Kairo would try to play the keyboard before he was tall enough to reach it,” she said. Listening to music from the “golden era” of reggae music is a normal thing in their household, she added. Reflecting on his inspirations, Kairo said that if he could change anything about himself, it would be when and where he was born. “I would have loved to be born in Jamaica during the 1960s, at a time when reggae music was becoming more popular around the world,” said Kairo. As a Canadian reggae artist outside of Jamaica, Kairo said he feels that music needs to return to the “roots” of reggae. He said that music should spread a message about love and peace, not things like violence and hate. “As a black musician in Canada, I have a lot to talk about, and a lot to sing about,” he said. Kairo’s music is about staying positive, despite negative things that we might see in the world. “There are some injustices that I can see in the world and I talk about them because they need to be spoken about,” said Kairo. 24. What is special about Kairo’s being nominated for Reggae Recording of the Year? A. He is a black musician. B. He has made many music works. C. His music is recognized in Canada. D. He is the youngest to receive the prize. 25. What mainly contributes to Kairo’s achievement in music? A. His mother’s support. B. His passion for music. C. His years of hard work. D. His teacher’s encouragement. 26. What can we learn about Kairo from paragraph 4? A. He wants to get reggae music back to its origin. B. He moved from Jamaica to Canada in the 1960s. C. He is not content with his present life. D. He was born in Jamaica in the 1960s. 27. In which column of a newspaper can you probably read the passage? A. Technology. B. Travel. C. Entertainment. D. The American wildlife officials proposed removing the waterfowl (水禽) from the endangered species list. This symbolic species, which is the only stork native to North America, has rebounded (反弹) because dedicated partners in the southeast have worked tirelessly to restore ecosystems that support it. In addition, the wood stork has increased its range in coastal areas. The birds have adapted to new nesting areas, tripling the number of colonies across their range from 29 to 99 in recent years. Credit goes mainly to the wildlife protections provided by the Endangered Species Act(ESA), which can impose restrictions on a variety of activities in areas where such species are, located, such as development, mining and oil drilling. The act saved the wood stork and it helped; preserve and rebuild vital habitats throughout the southeast, which has improved water quality and benefited countless other species who call the area home. The Endangered Species Act has saved 99% of the species that have been on the list since 1973, with 100 types of plants and animals delisted because they have recovered or are at least stable. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that restoration of the wood stork’s habitat, especially in the Florida Everglades and adjacent Big Cypress National Preserve, led to a, sharp increase in breeding pairs. Those numbers had shrunk to just 5,000 pairs in 1984, whereas there are more than 10,000 pairs today. “The proposed delisting of the wood stork is a significant milestone and a remarkable, achievement of the hard work by federal agencies, state and local governments, tribes, conservation organizations, and private citizens in protecting and restoring our most at-risk species,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said. If the wood stork is delisted, officials said it would remain protected by other laws including the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Clean Water Act. A monitoring plan, would be put in place for at least five years to ensure the stork population remains stable. 28. What can be inferred about the wood stork from the text? A. Its population is increasing. B. It has already died out. C. It is widely distributed worldwide. D. It is the most endangered species. 29. What contribute mostly to recovering the population of the wood stork? A. Charity organizations. B. Federal agencies. C. Protections of the ESA. D. Local companies. 30. What is Deb Haaland’s attitude to the delisting of the wood stork? A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Positive. 31. What is the best title of the text? A. Effect of the Big Cypress National Preserve Counts B. Saving of the Endangered Wood Stork Progresses C. Efforts to Restore the Wildlife Habitat Pay Off D. Protection of American Native Species Works D Physical education, or gym class, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”. Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult. High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school. The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weights. Inactivity increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes towards treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine. According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education. 32. What can we know about physical education in high school from paragraph 2? A. It can help teens learn to make good plans. B. It can get teens to encourage adults to exercise. C. It can make teens think much of exercise later. D. It can remove the stress faced by teens at school. 33. What does the underlined word “hindered” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Raised. B. Prevented. C. Shown. D. Adjusted. 34. What does the PCFSN think of doing sports? A. It helps students do better in their studies. B. It means students adjust to their studies better. C It helps students make good use of all their time. D. It means making students choose between sports and studies. 35. What is the text mainly about? A. How high school students can live a better life. B. How schools can help students love doing sports. C. Why some schools consider physical education important. D. Why high school students should receive physical education. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Increase the Speed of Your Internet Connection When using the Internet connection, we often encounter slow Internet speeds, greatly affecting our office efficiency. He looked down at the hospital bills in his hands and tears filled his eyes. His poor mom had been so ill, and here he was complaining and feeling sorry for himself! He should be praying for her recovery, not crying over a lost, childish dream. Andrew was nineteen, and as far back as he could remember, he’d wanted to become a software engineer. That dream became harder to realize after his dad died when Andrew was twelve. His mom had been left to bring him up on her own, and it was hard to make ends meet. So Andrew started doing part-time jobs. Andrew put away every cent he earned for going to college. When he was sixteen, he got a summer job at a local IT company, where his insight (洞察力) and intelligence caught the owner’s eye. Mr. Lewis, the CEO, made Andrew the assistant of his best and most innovative developer and the boy continuously grew on the challenge. He couldn’t wait to go to college! Unfortunately, when Andrew was in his senior high year, his mother became very ill. The usually energetic woman was constantly feeling tired and in pain. She went from doctor to doctor, but no one knew exactly what was the matter with her. They sent her off to do dozens of expensive tests, and then shook their heads over the results. Andrew’s mom started getting weaker and weaker and thinner and thinner until she could hardly walk. Andrew added the medical bills up and was in a great shock. They owed the hospital over $23,000! He pulled out his bank book. He had in his savings account almost $30,000, which he had painstakingly (艰苦地) saved up for years. He’d be able to use this money to go to college, but his mom’s health was more important. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next day, Andrew went to see Mr. Lewis. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ That night, Mr. Lewis appeared on Andrew’s doorstep. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 楚雄州民族中学高一年级5月月考 英语试题 本试卷满分150分,考试用时120分钟。 6. He went straight to the hospital and paid off his mother’s medical bills. His savings account was now almost empty, but his mother had great news. The doctors said his mother’s disease could be treated, which made Andrew pretty relieved. That night, Mr. Lewis appeared on Andrew’s doorstep. “Andrew,” he said softly, “I apologize for the way I spoke to you this morning. I refused your request for a good reason.
