Good morning, class. Today we’re going to talk about World Letter Writing Day on September first. It is a day for us to try to keep the art of letter writing. Before we had phones and computers, people wrote letters to communicate. It was the only way to talk to someone far away. Now most people just send texts or emails. But letter writing is still important for some reasons. First, when you write a letter by hand, it shows you really care. You take time to think about the person. Second, writing by hand excites our brain in a different way and improves our language skills. It’s good practice for your English, too. Third, letters make you say things more carefully. You can think about your words before writing them. How can we celebrate this day? It’s easy. Just write a letter to someone you know, maybe your parents, grandparents or a friend. Of course, we can also learn the right way to write a letter or just read some letters. Remember, even in our digital world, a real letter can make someone very happy.

With e-learning, people can study according to their own time and sometimes for free. They don’t need to sit in the traditional classroom. They can hand in their homework through the Internet. In traditional learning, there is a timetable for students at school. This makes study easier for those who can’t plan their own time well. What’s more, students can also get together in study groups to help each other with their work. Also, the discussions among students and between students and teachers can bring them fun sometimes.
Teacher:
It depends on you. You should know yourself well before choosing either traditional learning or e-learning. Some questions you may need to ask yourself are: Am I at self-study? Do I enjoy working online? Do I need a “live” teacher? Making a right choice will help you succeed.

C
When you walk in a forest, you may see fallen leaves and dry branches everywhere. Scientists call these things natural debris (残骸). It also includes dead trees and other parts of plants. Though many people think these things are useless waste, they are important for keeping ecosystems balanced.
Things from nature give back food to the soil. When they fall to the ground, small living things like insects break them down. They turn hard plant pieces into soft pieces and return food to the soil. This process is important for keeping the soil rich.
Natural debris provides homes and food for wildlife. From small insects to bigger animals, many living things depend on organic (有机的) materials that break down for food, homes, and places to have babies. This forms a good food chain that keeps many kinds of living things alive.
Also, natural debris can control water movement and help the ground hold more water. It works like a wall to reduce soil loss. Fallen leaves and branches slow down water on the land, so the ground can take in more water. By reducing soil loss, natural debris helps keep riverbanks and river beds in good condition.
However, human activities harm this balance. When people clear forests for farming or building cities, they take away important materials that form natural debris. This causes weaker nutrient (营养) cycling, poorer water control, and fewer living places for wildlife.
Natural debris is key in our life, so we should protect forests and reuse it. For example, we can collect fallen leaves to make nutrient-rich soil for plants. In this way, we can keep ecosystems healthy.
56.What can we know about natural debris?
A.It is useless waste in nature.
B.It plays a key role in the ecosystems.
C.It is dead plants and animals in the forest.
57.What helps natural debris turn into nutrients?
A.Small living things. B.Organic materials. C.Soil.
58.Why is natural debris good for riverbanks?
A.It helps reduce the soil loss.
B.It can slow down the water.
C.It provides food and homes for fish.
59.What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.Wildlife loses homes because of cities.
B.Natural debris needs humans’ protection.
C.Human activities harm the balance of nature.
60.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? (①= Paragraph 1)
A. B. C.
56.B 57.A 58.A 59.C 60.A
第一段最后一句“Though many people think these things are useless waste, they are important for keeping ecosystems balanced.”
57.第二段第二句“When they fall to the ground, small living things like insects break them down.”
58.第四段第三句“By reducing soil loss, natural debris helps keep riverbanks and river beds in good condition.”
allow amaze be friend language little many necessary parent
realize stay though
At my young age, I learned that what people said wasn’t always what they meant. I remember in a 61 meeting at my primary school, the teacher told my mother with a smile, “She’s doing fine. There’s still room for improvement 62 .” At first, I was really pleased. But the more I thought about the teacher’s words, the more I 63 that “fine” wasn’t actually very positive at all. What she really wanted to say was that I needed to work harder.
This became my first lesson in understanding the true meanings behind words. And I became quite good at understanding euphemisms (委婉语) later as I found them a part of my family’s 64 . When my father stopped going to the office at the age of 40, my mother told everyone that he 65 at home and making some time for the family. I didn’t understand it at first, because we saw him even 66 for he stayed in his room all day. It took me a while to understand that my father had actually lost his job. After this, I began to notice that my mother used other euphemisms more often at home.
I notice these euphemisms in school, too. Every time I chat with a friend who I 67 out of touch with for a long time, we would say, “We must have dinner together one day soon.” But unsurprisingly, “one day soon” never happens. Those words are just a way of showing 68 .
I found languages 69 : they have different parts, the meanings of words and the meanings behind the words. The next time you are listening to someone, take care of the words that they are using. Remember, what they are saying may not 70 be what they really mean.

根据“meeting at my primary school”可知,这里说的是家长会,“parents’ meeting”意为“家长会”,故填parents’。
根据“There’s still room for improvement...”
根据“the more I...that ‘fine’ wasn’t actually very positive at all”可知,此处表示“意识到”,“realize意识到”符合语境;结合上下文可知句子时态是一般过去时,此处用动词过去式“realized”。故填realized。
根据“And I became quite good at understanding euphemisms (委婉语) later as I found them a part of my family’s...”
根据“my mother told everyone that he...at home and making some time for the family”可知,这里要用过去进行时“was/were+现在分词”结构,主语“he”是第三人称单数,be动词要用“was”,“stay”的现在分词是“staying”。故填was staying。
根据“because we saw him even...for he stayed in his room all day”可知,这里说见到父亲的时间比以前少,要用“little”的比较级“less”。故填less。
根据“Every time I chat with a friend who I...out of touch for a long time”可知,“be out of touch”意为“失去联系”,根据语境这里表示从过去一直持续到现在的状态,要用现在完成时“have/has+过去分词”,主语“I”用“have”,“be”的过去分词是“been”。故填have been。
根据“Those words are just a way of showing...”
根据“I found languages...”
根据“what they are saying may not...be what they really mean”可知,此处用“necessary”的副词形式“necessarily”,意为“必然地,必要地” ,修饰“be”动词,强调“不一定”这种语气。故填necessarily。

Do you know the erhu? It’s a two-stringed Chinese violin with a history dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). If you ask any Chinese music fan about this traditional instrument, they will probably tell you something about Erquan Yingyue. This famous piece was written and played about 90 years ago by Abing, a blind street musician. Many years later, his hometown Wuxi has become a main production center of the instrument.
Erhu, one of the most famous traditional musical instruments in the southern Yangtze River area, has a deep connection with Meicun in Wuxi. Ever since Meicun began making the erhu in 1965, more and more people have spent most of their time making the erhu there. So far, Meicun has trained many erhu makers and continues to be a protector of its musical form. In fact, over the past century, more than half of China’s top erhu artists have come from Wuxi.
Meicun erhu-making shows both tradition and skills. As one of the erhu makers introduced, “Erhu-making involves several processes, with more than 100 steps. Each step is highly connected.” Now, the famous “Meicun brand” has at least 18 main groups producing more than 50,000 erhus yearly. Today, Meicun erhu-making tradition connects the past and future, while musicians play the Meicun erhus, sharing China’s music with listeners everywhere.

Have you ever heard of an AED? AED means Automated External Defibrillator (自动体外除颤器). When someone’s heart suddenly stops beating—an AED can restart it. This small medical machine is truly a life-saver.
Using an AED isn’t as hard as many people think! Using it includes just a few steps. First, turn on the AED.It will give both voice and visual (视觉的) instructions (指令). Next, put the sticky pads on the person’s chest. Make sure to place them where the AED shows. These pads allow the AED to check whether the heart is working well. Then, move away and don’t touch the person until the AED gives another instruction. If the AED says “shock advised”, make sure no one is touching the person, then press the shock button. If not, follow the AED’s instructions for CP (chest compression) before the doctors arrive.
Actually, you can find an AED in many public places. In schools, you can usually find it near the gym or the school office. In shopping malls, check the information desks. At airports, look for it on the walls. It is usually marked with a heart symbol, making it easy to be found.

Farms and factories also greatly depend on it. However, the water in the Colorado River gets used up during its journey. Because of the warmer weather, there is much less snow in the mountains and less water runs into the river.
c. The Amazon Rain Forest
d. It is one of the largest rainforests in the world. It is named after the Amazon River and the river runs through the forest. It is home to different kinds of plants and animals all over the world. Today, the Amazon Rain Forest is in big trouble. The causes include warmer weather and human actions. People are cutting down the trees for wood and to make space for farming. The Amazon Rain Forest is disappearing quickly.

Nowadays, online learning has become popular. We also call it e-learning. For people who are too poor or too busy to go to classes, it’s an excellent choice. However, some people think learning at a traditional school is more fun, because the teacher is “live”. Which one is better?
Student A:
With e-learning, people can study according to their own time and sometimes for free. They don’t need to sit in the traditional classroom. They can hand in their homework through the Internet. E-learning also allows students to learn something new even while they are having class at school or doing their work.
Student B:
In traditional learning, there is a timetable for students at school. This makes study easier for those who can’t plan their own time well. What’s more, students can also get together in study groups to help each other with their work. Also, the discussions among students and between students and teachers can bring them fun sometimes.
Teacher:
It depends on you. You should know yourself well before choosing either traditional learning or e-learning. Some questions you may need to ask yourself are: Am I at self-study? Do I enjoy working online? Do I need a “live” teacher? Making a right choice will help you succeed.
51.What is the discussion mainly about?
A.Opinions on e-learning.
B.Popular learning ways.
C.E-learning or traditional learning.
52.Who thinks e-learning is better?
A.The teacher. B.Student A. C.Student B.
53.Which picture can show the meaning of the underlined word “timetable”?

A. B. C.
allow amaze be friend language little many necessary parent
realize stay though

AEDs are important. Every second counts when a sudden heart stop happens. With an AED, we can help save lives even before the doctors arrive. More and more places are getting AEDs, and more people are learning how to use them. This way, we can be ready to help if someone around us has a heart problem.
81.When do we need to use an AED?
82.What two kinds of instructions does an AED give?
83.How many steps do people use an AED to save a person?
84.What have you learned from this passage besides (除了) when and how we use an AED?
