In a world where artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming our lives, a unique experiment took place in a quiet neighborhood. 82-year-old Mrs. Chen, a retired teacher who had lived alone since her husband passed away, received a special package from her son—a small, friendly-looking robot named “Xiao Yi”.
At first, Mrs. Chen was 1 . She had never used a smartphone, let alone a robot. “What do I do with this?” she muttered. But Xiao Yi’s gentle voice replied, “Grandma, would you like me to read today’s news or remind you to take your medicine?”
Over the next few weeks, something 2 happened. Xiao Yi didn’t just help with tasks; it began to 3 Mrs. Chen’s daily routine. It learned that she enjoyed watering her orchids at 9 a.m. and listening to Beijing opera in the afternoon. When she forgot to turn off the stove, Xiao Yi would 4 her with a soft alarm. More surprisingly, the robot started telling 5 jokes based on her favorite stories from the past.
One evening, Mrs. Chen felt a sharp pain in her chest. Xiao Yi detected her abnormal breathing patterns and immediately 6 her son and the local emergency service. “Don’t worry, Grandma. Help is on the way,” it said calmly. Later, the doctor said that if help had arrived ten minutes later, the 7 could have been fatal.
The story of Mrs. Chen and Xiao Yi spread quickly on social media. Some people 8 the idea, saying that AI could provide companionship for the elderly. Others worried that 9 on machines might weaken human connections. But Mrs. Chen had her own opinion: “Xiao Yi never 10 my bond with my son. Instead, it made me more confident to use video calls with him. Technology is like a walking stick—it supports you, but you still have to walk on your own two feet.”
This experiment 11 a deeper truth: AI works best not when it replaces humans, but when it 12 human abilities. The goal of innovation should never be to make life 13 , but to make it richer and more connected. As a high school student, you might be the next person to 14 such technology. 任务2:
If I were to add one more function to the robot “Xiao Yi”, I would design “Emotional Memory & Remote Empathy”.
Specifically, the robot would record Grandma Chen’s daily emotional changes — for example, humming when happy or sighing when lonely — and synchronize this data with her son’s mobile phone via the cloud. If the robot detects that Grandma has been feeling down for two consecutive days, it would automatically send a warm reminder to her son: “Mom seems to miss you today. It might be a good time to give her a call.” At the same time, the robot could play a recorded voice message or an old photo of them together.
Why this function?
Because true companionship comes not just from machines, but from enhancing human connections. Many adult children are not unfilial — they are simply busy and may overlook their parents’ emotional needs. This function does not replace the son’s role; instead, it acts as a catalyst for family bonds. It turns emotional data collected by the robot into a gentle, loving nudge, making technology a bridge rather than a barrier. As Grandma Chen said, “Technology is like a walking stick — it supports you, but you still have to walk on your own two feet.” This function helps family members walk back toward each other.

The goal of innovation should never be to make life 13 , but to make it richer and more connected. As a high school student, you might be the next person to 14 such technology. Remember: the most powerful code you can write is the one that 15 empathy into action.
