Passage 10
When you first hear about the Dead Sea, it might sound scary, but the truth is quite different. Let’s get closer to the Dead Sea and learn more about it.
The Dead Sea is located in southwest Asia. It is about 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide. It sits at about 430 meters below sea level, making it the lowest lake on Earth’s land.
What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with a salt concentration (含盐度) of more than 30%, which is about eight times saltier than common seawater. This makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth. The Dead Sea stays so salty because of its special natural conditions. Each year, it receives very little rainfall, and only a small amount of fresh water runs into it. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate (蒸发) quickly, which makes the salt concentration even higher. For these reasons, it is also known as the Salt Sea.
If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life-- no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to live there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t let the name of not having any sea life scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float well, without the need for life buoys (救生圈). In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation. If you walk along the lakeside, you’ll likely see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.
1. What do we know about the Dead Sea?
A.It is the largest place in Asia. B.It is the widest sea in the world.
C.It is the deepest point in America. D.It is the lowest place on Earth’s land.
2. Why do people call it the Dead Sea?
A.It is a lake with very high salt concentration.
B.No fresh water runs into it and water evaporates fast.
C.It is not very safe for people to swim in it.
D.No sea animals can stay alive in its water.
3. What does the underlined word “float” in the last paragraph probably mean?
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.It shares some interesting facts about the Dead Sea.
B.It explains why people enjoy visiting the Dead Sea.
C.It gives advice on safe swimming in the Dead Sea.
D.It encourages people to take a trip to the Dead Sea.
D 2. D 3. B 4. A
结合文章第二段“It sits at about 430 meters below sea level, making it the lowest lake on Earth’s land.”,死海位于海平面以下约430米,是地球上陆地上最低的湖泊。
2. 结合文章第四段“If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life-- no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to live there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.”,死海里没有任何海洋生物,高含盐度让它们无法在那里生存,这就是它被称为死海的原因。
3. 结合后文“without the need for life buoys”和“many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines”,不需要救生圈,人们还能在水里看书看杂志,可推断“float”意为“漂浮”。
Passage 11
In December, 2025, a terrible tsunami hit Japan. There was a huge earthquake under the sea. Huge waves rushed towards the land. They caused serious damage (损害), and many families lost their homes.
Japan is not the only country that has experienced a large tsunami. In 2004, there was a big earthquake under the Indian Ocean. The tsunami reached many countries, such as Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
In Sri Lanka, something interesting happened before the tsunami arrived. Just before the big waves came, many animals started to run away. Elephants were very nervous and tried to get far from the sea. Flamingos flew off together and left the area. But the tsunami was a big shock to humans — no one knew it was coming. So how did the animals know about it earlier than people did?
In Japan, some people are trying a new animal warning system (系统). Many believe that animals, such as dogs or chickens, become nervous before an earthquake. In Susaki, a small town in Japan, people check how their pets behave. If they notice that their cat or dog looks worried, they can call a special phone number.
Can animals really predict (预测) earthquakes and other natural disasters? Can they save lives? No one really knows. But perhaps animals know more than we do.

3. 由第四段最后一句“If they notice that their cat or dog looks worried, they can call a special phone number.”
4. 由全文内容尤其是最后一段“Can animals really predict earthquakes and other natural disasters? Can they save lives? No one really knows. But perhaps animals know more than we do.”
Passage 12
Belarus (白俄罗斯) is known for its many unique customs. Belarusians are also famous for their wonderful traditions and habits. They’re kind, with special ways to talk, meet, and treat guests. Let’s learn about them together!
Belarusians are open, warm, and honest. They often say “please” and “thank you”. They use “you” in different ways. Young people call each other by first names, but grown-ups use first names and father’s names.
When meeting, they shake hands, hug, or kiss. Old people kiss kids’ foreheads (前额). Friends kiss each other’s cheeks. Men may kiss ladies’ hands to show respect. If you don’t know a lady well, don’t shake hands unexpectedly. Just say she looks young and nice.
To welcome guests, Belarusians give them bread and salt. Guests should bow, pretend to kiss the bread, take a small piece of it, then put salt on it, eat it, and say “thank you”. When you visit Belarusians, bring odd-numbered flowers (3, 5, 7 …) for the hostess. Even numbers (偶数) are for people who have died.
Belarusians laugh loudly to express happiness. A small smile may mean they look down on someone. This is very different from the meaning of our “polite smile”.

One evening, Mrs. Barry said she would take Diana and Anne to their school’s concert to celebrate Diana’s birthday. She also said Anne could stay over.
Anne and Diana dressed in their best clothes. Anne’s clothes were not as pretty as Diana’s, but she imagined they were. They rode through the snow to the concert. The evening was very pleasant. There was only one performance Anne did not enjoy—Gilbert Blythe’s poetry reading. Anne picked up a book and read until he finished.
It was eleven o’clock when they got home. The house was dark and silent. The girls ran to the spare room and raced to see who could reach the bed first. They jumped onto the bed at the same moment. Then something moved! “Oh, goodness!” cried a voice. Anne and Diana jumped off and ran away, very surprised.
“Who was it?” whispered Anne.
“It was Aunt Josephine,” laughed Diana. “She will be so angry!”
The next morning, Anne left early. She saw Diana again in the afternoon.
“Your Aunt Josephine was very angry, wasn’t she?” said Anne.
“Yes,” answered Diana. “She said I was the worst-behaved girl she’d ever seen. She said she would not stay another night.”
Anne decided to tell the truth. She walked into the sitting room. Miss Josephine Barry was knitting by the fire. “Who are you?” she cried.
“I’m Anne of Green Gables,” said the visitor, “and I’ve come to tell the truth. It was all my fault jumping into bed on you. We were only having fun. If you’re going to be angry, be angry with me, not Diana.”

woke up“醒来”与电力无关、turned off“关闭”是人为操作、cut down“砍倒”同样与电力供应无关。
remembered what she had learned后她查看应急箱状况,checked“检查”准确描述核对应急物品的举动,符合语境。
during a snowstorm“在暴风雪期间”是固定搭配,during符合语境。by“通过”、against“反对”、without“没有”均不能与a snowstorm构成“在暴风雪期间”的时间表达。

B.No fresh water runs into it and water evaporates fast.
C.It is not very safe for people to swim in it.
D.No sea animals can stay alive in its water.
3. What does the underlined word “float” in the last paragraph probably mean?

C.It gives advice on safe swimming in the Dead Sea.
