Panda Passport
Three-year-old Qing Bao and Bao Li traveled all the way to Washington, D. C., where they would live at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. How did they make their long journey? Let’s have a look!
Later, China!
Qing Bao and Bao Li started their journeys at two panda bases in Sichuan Province, China. They both spent a few weeks getting comfortable in their travel boxes. Then trucks took them to the airport (机场).
The Panda Express (专运)
The pandas took the plane in Chengdu, China and began their 19-hour journey to an airport in Washington, D. C. They were the only cargo (货物) on the plane. Two zookeepers, an animal doctor, and lots of bamboo came with them.
Eat, sleep, repeat
Pandas are solitary (独居的) animals. So during the journey, Qing Bao and Bao Li stayed in different travel boxes. And the boxes were large enough for them to move comfortably. “They’d just eat, sleep, then be ready to eat again,” Director Brown-Palsgrove said.
Keep trucking
After landing in the US, the pandas had one more journey to make: the 40-minute truck ride from the airport to the National Zoo. Finally, after traveling a total of 8,250 miles, they arrived at their new home and would live there for the next 10 years.
16. How did Qing Bao and Bao Li travel from their bases to the National Zoo?
A. By truck→by plane→by truck B. By truck→by ship→by train.
C. By train→by plane→by truck D. By train→by ship→by truck.
17. What do we know about the pandas during the journey?
①They ate bamboo. ②They slept.
③They stayed in different boxes. ④They went with three zookeepers.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①③④
18. What can we learn from the passage?
A. It took the pandas two hours to get used to the travel box.
B. The pandas would return to China after 19 years in the US.
C. The pandas traveled 8,250 miles and got to their new home.
D. The pandas spent 40 hours traveling from China to the US.

Book Report on A Wrinkle in Time
by Kirstin Bowman, Class 8A
I have chosen to write my book report on A Wrinkle in Time, a science-fiction novel by Madeleine L’Engle.
It tells the story of a thirteen-year-old girl called Meg Murry who travels through space with her little brother Charles to find their father. He is a scientist and is missing.
Meg and Charles meet a mysterious old woman called Mrs Whatsit. She says that she knows where their father is—he is trapped (被困) as a prisoner (囚犯) on a far-away planet Camazotz and controlled by IT. She says she can help them travel through space to rescue him. Mrs Whatsit has two strange friends, Mrs Who and Mrs Which, and the three women travel with the children.
On Camazolz Mr Murry is a prisoner of IT, a powerful, evil (邪恶的) creature who rules the planet. The children and their friends are able to free Mr Murry, but then IT catches Charles. With the help of Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who, and Mrs Which, Meg is finally able to free Charles.
A Wrinkle in Time is an exciting story of goodness fighting against evil. I like the characters in the book. At first Meg is not confident, but she learns that her love for her family makes her strong. Charles is very smart and brave, too. Mrs Whatsit and her two friends are funny and wise.
The book has some interesting scientific ideas in it, too. I enjoy reading about how they are able to quickly travel long distances (距离) through space. I recommend A Wrinkle in Time to anyone who likes science fiction stories.
19. Where is Mr Murry trapped?
A. In a science lab. B. On a space station.
C. In an old woman’s house. D. On a planet named Camazotz.
20. What can we infer about Meg?
A. She changes a lot during the journey. B. She is afraid of all the strange women.
C. She knows her father’s experience at first. D. She gives up easily when meeting trouble.
21. What does the writer think of Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who, and Mrs Which?
A. They are funny and wise. B. They are afraid of IT.
C. They are evil and dangerous. D. They are unkind and serious.
22. Why does the writer write this book report?
A. To explain the scientific ideas in the book. B. To introduce the three strange old women.
C. To share thoughts and recommend the book. D. To tell the whole story of A Wrinkle in Time.
D 20. A 21. A 22. C

根据第五段“At first Meg is not confident, but she learns that her love for her family makes her strong”可知Meg一开始不自信,后来因对家人的爱变得坚强,能推断出她在旅程中改变很大;B“害怕所有陌生妇人”、C“一开始就知道父亲的遭遇”、D“遇到困难轻易放弃”均与原文内容不符。
根据第五段“Mrs Whatsit and her two friends are funny and wise”可知作者认为三位妇人风趣又充满智慧;B“惧怕IT”、C“邪恶危险”、D“冷漠严肃”均不符合原文描述。
C
Every year, hundreds of millions of trees die from lightning strikes (雷打) around the world, especially in rainforests. And as the climate changes, that number is rising. However, scientists in Panama have discovered a special tree—the tonka bean tree (香豆树). The tree can survive lightning strikes.
According to a new study written by Evan Gora and his team, the tonka bean tree has a surprising ability. They have compared 9 tonka bean trees with 84 other kinds of trees since 2021. It showed that all 9 tonka bean trees survived lightning strikes, while over half of the other kinds of trees died in less than 2 years after being hit by lightning.
What’s more, the tree actually benefits from lightning strikes. Each lightning strike on a tonka bean tree kills almost 80% of its parasitic vines (寄生藤蔓) and about 9 nearby trees, giving it more space to grow. As Gora explained, “It’s better for a tonka bean tree to be hit by lightning than not.”
Tonka bean trees grow about 4 meters taller than nearby trees, helping them get more sunlight. The height difference also makes it more possible for them to attract lightning strikes. “Trees die more easily when living next to a tonka bean tree than living next to any other big old trees in that forest,” said Gora.
Now, scientists are trying to find out how this tree resists (抵抗) lightning strikes. They hope this tree’s secrets could help protect forests from lightning strikes.
23. How does the writer show that the tonka bean tree can survive lightning?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking and answering questions.
C. By listing numbers and comparing. D. By describing the tree’s appearance.
24. Why does the author say “It’s better for a tonka bean tree to be hit by lightning than not”?
A. Because it gives the tree more energy. B. Because it gives the tree more space.
C. Because it helps the tree get more water. D. Because it attracts more insects to the tree.
25. What is the main purpose of the scientists’ research now?
A. To study how vines affect tree survival. B. To find out how the tree resists lightning.
C. To compare how fast different trees grow. D. To prove that tonka bean trees are the tallest.
26. What can we infer from the passage about trees living next to a tonka bean tree?
A. They grow taller than the tonka bean tree.
B. They benefit from the tonka bean tree’s parasitic vines.
C. They die more easily than trees living near other big trees.
D. They are protected from lightning by the tonka bean tree.
C 24. B 25. B 26. C
根据第二段“They have compared 9 tonka bean trees with 84 other kinds of trees since 2021. It showed that all 9 tonka bean trees survived lightning strikes, while over half of the other kinds of trees died in less than 2 years”可知,作者通过列举数字、对比不同树木的存活情况来证明香豆树能扛住雷击;A“讲故事”、B“自问自答”、D“描述树木外形”文中均未使用。
根据第三段“Each lightning strike on a tonka bean tree kills almost 80% of its parasitic vines and about 9 nearby trees, giving it more space to grow”可知,雷击能除掉寄生藤蔓、清除周边树木,给香豆树更多生长空间,因此被雷击对它更有利;A“提供更多能量”、C“获得更多水分”、D“吸引更多昆虫”原文无依据。
根据最后一段“Now, scientists are trying to find out how this tree resists lightning strikes”可知科学家当下研究的主要目的是弄清楚这种树抵抗雷击的原理;A“研究藤蔓对树木存活的影响”、C“对比不同树木生长速度”、D“证明香豆树最高”均不是研究目标。
根据第四段“Trees die more easily when living next to a tonka bean tree than living next to any other big old trees in that forest”可推断,和香豆树相邻的树木更容易死亡;A“长得比香豆树更高”与原文“Tonka bean trees grow about 4 meters taller than nearby trees”相反;B“从寄生藤蔓中获益”原文无对应信息;D“被香豆树保护免遭雷击”与文意相悖。
D
A loud siren (警报器) sounds. It’s the tsunami warning siren. In every classroom of the high school, students put down their pens and books, stand up and go outside. Then all the students and teachers make their way out of the school and walk along a road that goes up a hill. Local people join them. When they reach a special meeting point, they stop. The teachers count their students and congratulate them on getting here quickly and safely.
But is a tsunami coming to destroy villages, boats and plants along the coast? No. This is a practice. This is Tonga, in the Pacific Ocean and today is Tsunami Awareness (意识) Day.
Every year on 5 November, Tonga holds Tsunami Awareness Day to teach people about the danger of tsunamis and how to keep safe. The key messages are to know the warnings and to get to high ground-away from low ground along the coast. Another message is to help people who can’t move as quickly as others, like the elderly and people with disabilities (残疾), so they make it to high ground.
“We all remember the tsunami of 2022,” says student Leia Mafi. “It happened after a big volcano erupted (火山爆发) under the ocean nearby. Big waves caused a lot of damage (损害). Thankfully, we had early warning of the tsunami, and most people left the low ground. Four lives were lost, but it could have been worse.”
“Tonga is a nation of 170 islands, and many of us live beside the ocean,” says teacher Ben Pulu. “We now have the technology to check movements (移动) under the ocean and warn us that a tsunami is on the way. But we all need to know what to do when that warning comes. Tsunami Awareness Day is a great way to make sure everyone is ready.”
27. What is the main purpose of holding Tsunami Awareness Day?
A. To remember the meeting point.
B. To count the students and teachers.
C. To check the tsunami warning siren.
D. To help prepare for tsunamis that may happen.
28. Why were only four lives lost in the 2022 tsunami?
A. Because the tsunami was very small.
B. Because everyone stayed inside their houses.
C. Because the volcano stopped erupting quickly.
D. Because people got early warning and left the low ground.
29. What does the underlined word “it” mean in paragraph 4?
A. The eruption. B. The low ground. C. The warning. D. The damage.
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Tsunami Awareness Day in Tonga B. Islands Facing Tsunami Risks
C. How to Help the Elderly in Disasters D. The Terrible Volcanic Eruption in 2022
D 28. D 29. D 30. A
根据原文第三段“Tonga holds Tsunami Awareness Day to teach people about the danger of tsunamis and how to keep safe. The key messages are to…Another message is to…”和最后一段“Tsunami Awareness Day is a great way to make sure everyone is ready.”
根据原文第四段“Thankfully, we had early warning of the tsunami, and most people left the low ground.”
画线词“it”的前文“Big waves caused a lot of damage”和“Four lives were lost”提到海啸巨浪已经造成了损害,仅四人遇难,“but”转折表述意为“这本可能会更糟”,因此“it”指代前文提到的海啸带来的损害。

as well as“和、也”、because of“因为”、in front of“在……
after“在……之后”、if“如果”、though“虽然”均无法体现同步进行的动作。
【43题详解】
句意:在花园里,杰西给弗雷德梳完毛。
前文提到started to brush him,固定搭配finish doing sth, brushing“梳毛”符合语境。
Turn on“打开”、Turn up“调大(音量/水流)”、Turn down“调小”均无法解决积水险情。
off“离开”、out“出去”、down“向下”方向相反。
looked for“寻找”、looked after“照顾”、looked like“看起来像”均无法搭配互相观望的场景。
him“他”、you“你”、it“它”指代对象不匹配。
