My home is in Edmonton, near a river in the mountains. It is a beautiful area that has been made into a park with meters of hiking paths (小路) along the river. One day, I discovered a wild path I had never seen before. It was really slippery (滑) because it was covered with ice. I was alone at the time and even though I was afraid, I still wanted to go for a walk. Just this thought made my heart beat faster. I was shaking, not from the cold, even though it was about -15℃ outside, but from fear. I knew I had to do it. I moved forward slowly and put one foot on the path, then the other. Then I continued, one foot in front of the other. I went very slowly down the path, shaking with every step. I was sweating (流汗) even though I felt cold. I had no idea how long it would take me to travel along the path, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to overcome my fear. At last, I succeeded! At least that’s how I felt. I nearly ran down the path. Well, not exactly ran, but it felt like that compared with my very slow speed in the beginning. Maybe you don’t think this is much of a story, but I just want to tell you that we never know what’s around the corner. If you compare this story to life, you’ll see that we have no idea where life is going to take us, or how many easy or difficult paths there are to choose from, until we make a choice! The point is: we have the right to choose! 5. Why did the writer sweat when taking the path? A. He felt very afraid. B. He shook to keep warm. C. He ran down the path. D. He wanted to fight his fear. 6. What do we know about the writer? A. He always likes taking risks. B. He travelled along the path with fear. C. He ran fast along the path. D. He went down the path with his friend. 7. What can we infer from the passage? A. The weather was warm that day. B. The path was not far from the river. C. The writer had walked the path before. D. The writer knew where life was leading him. 8. What does the writer mainly tell us through his experience? A. Rome was not built in a day. B. Things may not seem so dangerous in the end. C. It’s worth challenging our fears and pushing on. D. We do not have the right to do whatever we like. A 6. B 7. B 8. 【5题详解】 第二段中提到“I was shaking, not from the cold... but from fear.”,第三段中提到“I was sweating (流汗) even though I felt cold.”,说明作者出汗是因为害怕。 【6题详解】 第二段中提到“I was shaking... from fear”,第三段提到“I went very slowly down the path, shaking with every step”,所以作者是带着恐惧走完这条小路的。 【7题详解】 第一段提到“My home is in Edmonton, near a river in the mountains. It is a beautiful area that has been made into a park with meters of hiking paths along the river.”,说明作者的家在埃德蒙顿,靠近山间的一条河流,这条野生小路是沿着河流的,所以可以推断小路离河流不远。 Passage 3. Have you ever been to a swamp (沼泽)? The book Swampfire: A Shockoe Slip Gang Adventure will tell you all about it. It tells the story of siblings Sally and Andrew who are also amateur (业余的) teen detectives (侦探). They are also known as “The Shockoe Slip Gang”, a name given to them by reporters after their last successful case. They are excited to return to their cousin Anne’s farm in Virginia this summer. Mostly they are looking forward to camping out in the largely unexplored swamp near the farm with their friend Robin. Sally and Andrew admire Robin because he and his parents live in the swamp, and he knows how to survive in the great outdoors. The three friends are even more excited to explore the swamp when they hear about a recent ghost sighting there. As it turns out, there is a mysterious creature living deep in the swamp. Robin even says he has caught sight of the creature, which he says is actually a beautiful red-gold horse! But before leaving for the camping trip, Anne warns Sally, Andrew and Robin about the possibility of swamp fires, which are dangerous but also attractive. The Native Americans who used to live in the area believed that a swamp fire was a special kind of fire, and meant something special was going to happen. From fighting off bears to facing snakes, Sally, Andrew and Robin have plenty of challenges during this adventure. Will their skills, bravery and friendship be enough to leave the swamp alive? Read the book to find out. 9. Where will Sally go this summer? A. A swamp. B. Anne’s farm. C. A city. D. A school. 10. What does “siblings” most probably mean? A. Friends. B. Cousins. C. Brother & sister. D. Detectives. 11. Why do kids get more excited? A. For ghost news. B. For Anne’s farm. C. For warm weather. D. For safe camping. 12. What’s the purpose of the last sentence? A. To show danger. B. To introduce fire. C. To praise friends. D. To draw readers. B 10. C 11. A 12. 【9题详解】 第二段明确指出:“They are excited to return to their cousin Anne’s farm in Virginia this summer.” 【11题详解】 第四段开头指出:“The three friends are even more excited to explore the swamp when they hear about a recent ghost sighting there.” 【12题详解】 最后一句“Will their skills, bravery and friendship be enough to leave the swamp alive? Read the book to find out.” D。 Passage 4. It happens all the time—you are standing on a bus, listening to music, when you feel someone’s breath on the back of your neck. You think to yourself: Is this person getting too close to me? The answer is “yes”. Everyone has a sense of personal space. But how big is this space? According to a new study, the size of the space is different for different people, but usually it is between twenty to forty centimetres in front of the face. In the study, researchers from University College London asked volunteers to hold their hands at different distances from their faces. They then gave them an electric shock on their hands while measuring (测量) how often the volunteers blinked (眨眼). The more they blinked, the more of a threat (威胁) they felt the shock was to their faces. The results among volunteers were a little different, but the average personal space was twenty to forty centimetres. Researchers also found that the more anxious a person was, the larger their personal space was, because they were more sensitive (敏感的). Besides psychological factors (心理因素), culture is also thought to be able to change your personal space. For example, a person who grows up in a country that hugs a lot has less of a problem with strangers getting too close than a person who grows up in one with more distance between people. People’s senses of personal space also depend on the environment they are in. “If you are chatting to someone in your living room, you won’t have a large safety margin at all,” explains researcher Gian Domenico Iannetti. “But if you are walking through a dangerous area, then that will be much bigger.” Sadly, sometimes people just don’t understand the idea of personal space and keep getting into yours. Whenever that happens, you needn’t try to step backwards. Researchers suggest that you “create a new space” by turning to wave at someone passing by or to get something out of your bag. 13. What can we learn about personal space from the new study? A. It stays the same for all people. B. Its average size is 20-40 centimetres. C. People blink less when feeling threatened. D. Calmer people always need larger space. 14. Which of the following influences people’s personal space? ① psychological state ② culture background ③ living environment ④ body height A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④ 15. What does the example in Paragraph 6 show us? A. People from hugging-friendly countries hate closeness. B. Culture shapes personal space feelings. C. People should keep far from strangers daily. D. Hugging breaks personal space easily. 16. What should you do when others break your personal space? A. Step back away from the person quickly. B. Argue with the person directly and loudly. C. Create new space with gentle body moves. D. Keep silent and never do anything at all. B 14. A 15. B 16. 【13题详解】 原文第三段和第五段指出“the size of the space is different for different people, but usually it is between twenty to forty centimetres in front of the face... the average personal space was twenty to forty centimetres”,可知个人空间的平均大小为20-40厘米。 【14题详解】 原文第五段指出“the more anxious a person was, the larger their personal space was” (心理状态①)、第六段“culture is also thought to be able to change your personal space” (文化背景②)、第七段“People’s senses of personal space also depend on the environment they are in” (生活环境③),可知影响个人空间的因素包括①②③,文中未提及身高。 【15题详解】 第六段的例子提到,在拥抱文化盛行的国家长大的人,对陌生人靠近的容忍度 【16题详解】 原文最后一段指出“Researchers suggest that you ‘create a new space’ by turning to wave at someone passing by or to get something out of your bag”,可知当他人侵犯个人空间时,可以通过温和的肢体动作来创造新空间。 Beijing Silk Figurines (绢人) For the younger generations (一代) in China, modern toys have always been attractive (有吸引力的). The US Americans have a tradition of tipping. You can tip waiters, taxi drivers, hotel doormen… nearly anyone with a service job. Pay attention when you talk with Americans. Questions like “How old are you?” may be common between friends. But as tourists in the US, it is not polite to ask people’s age. Britain British people are known for queuing. From the supermarket to the underground, queues are very common in Britain. Usually, it takes a British person six months of their life in queues. If you jump the queue in Britain, you may make them angry. Japan You should never wear shoes indoors in Japan. When visiting someone’s home, it is rude to enter with shoes on. Shoes should be taken off at the door and replaced with indoor slippers. This is also the same when you try clothes on in a clothes shop. You should take off your shoes before going into the fitting room. There are indoor shoes prepared for customers inside. 41. D. The writer knew where life was leading him. 8. What does the writer mainly tell us through his experience? A. Rome was not built in a day. B. Things may not seem so dangerous in the end. C. It’s worth challenging our fears and pushing on. D. We do not have the right to do whatever we like. Passage 3. A. Beijing Silk Figurines (绢人) For the younger generations (一代) in China, modern toys have always been attractive (有吸引力的). But if you don’t learn about local traditions, you may get into trouble. To help stop things like that, I list some cultural taboos (禁忌) in several countries. Let’s take a look and then you can have a great trip there. Mexico In Mexico, bringing an expensive gift to someone’s home could be seen as a bribe (贿赂). For local people, some simple things like flowers are good gifts. But you shouldn’t take along red flowers, because in Mexican culture, they symbolize death and can be connected with witchcraft (巫术). 41.
