4 Bullet Train Journeys across China
China is blazing a new future with its record-breaking bullet trains. These trains make crossing the country’s huge landmass accessible on a shorter visit.
Silk Road
Time:8 hours| Distance:690 miles
Spanning Gansu’s northwest deserts, this high-speed journey traces ancient camel trails once used to trade silk and philosophy. Today, you can make the trip in days, exploring grand Buddha statues, night markets, temples, and sweeping landscapes. From Lanzhou, the train sails through the Hexi Corridor, passing Zhangye and Jiayuguan (Great Wall’s western end) — before reaching Dunhuang, home to giant dunes and the Mogao Caves, a priceless Buddhist art treasury.
Tibetan Plateau
Time: 20 hours| Distance:1,215 miles
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway, technically the only non-high-speed train here, is an engineering wonder built on permafrost (冻土) across extreme terrain. Departing Xining, this overnight journey passes Qinghai Lake — China’ s largest — before crossing the Tibetan Plateau into the Himalayas, arriving next morning in Lhasa.
Wintery Northeast
Time: 4.5 hours| Distance: 771 miles
This high-speed route shoots northeast from Beijing through the vast plains of Dongbei. You’ ll pass through Shenyang before reaching Harbin, a city with onion-domed churches, frozen rivers, and a mix of cultures including Chinese, Russian, Mongolian, etc. Time your journey for January/ February to catch the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, where ice palaces glow with neon.
Skyscrapers to Coast
Time:4 hours| Distance:351 miles
Board a bullet train in Hong Kong coastward. The route zips past fishing villages and river estuaries to Xiamen — a port city with 1850s architecture and sea views. Detour inland to explore Fujian’ s Tulou, a UNESCO site of circular Hakka clan houses made of packed earth and timber, some over 700 years old.
1. What can you do in Silk Road?
A. Do some silk trade. B. Visit Buddhist temples.
C. Explore ancient markets. D. View the whole Great Wall.
2. Which journey covers the longest distance?
A. Silk Road. B. Tibetan Plateau.
C. Wintery Northeast. D. Skyscrapers to Coast.
3. What do the last two journeys have in common?
A. They pass through frozen rivers. B. They provide amazing sea views.
C. They enjoy a mix of foreign cultures. D. They feature uniquely styled buildings.

Cammie, a young camel who lost her front leg in Pakistan’s Sindh province, left her caregivers emotional as she walked for the first time on a prosthetic (义肢的)leg. “I started weeping when I saw her walking with the prosthetic leg. It was a dream come true,” said Sheema Khan, manager of an animal shelter in Karachi. Veterinarian Babar Hussain confirmed it was the first time a large animal in Pakistan had received a prosthetic leg.
Cammie’s leg was said to be cut off by a landlord in June 2024 as a punishment for entering his field in search of food. A viral video of the wounded camel on social media prompted immediate government action. She was transported the next day to Karachi — 250 kilometers away, and has been living in a shelter there ever since.
“She was terrified on arrival. We witnessed her heartbreaking cries. She was afraid of men,” Khan recalled. One of the biggest challenges the caregivers faced was gaining her trust. “I cannot put her condition into words.” Khan added.
To aid her recovery, the caregivers introduced another young camel named Callie. Her presence brought comfort to the injured Cammie, who tried standing on her three legs for the first time after seeing her new companion. “Cammie had been stuck in her small space for almost four to five months before Callie arrived,” Khan added. After treating the wound and completing initial recovery training, the shelter — Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project — arranged a prosthetic leg from a US-based firm so she could walk on all fours again. “We don’t force her to walk. After attaching it, we wait about 15 to 20 minutes. Then she stands up on her own and walks slowly,” Hussain explained.
Caregivers emphasize that full adaptation to the prosthetic limb may take15-20 days and Cammie will remain at the shelter permanently.
4. Why did Cammie lose her leg?
A. From a viral infection. B. As a landowner’s punishment.
C. Because of an untreated wound. D. Due to caregivers’ untimely rescue.
5. What made it harder for Cammie to recover?
A. Her profound fear and distrust of people.
B. Landlord’s intervention and official inaction.
C. Her serious injury and resistance to treatment.
D. Limited food and insufficient medical resource.
6. What did Callie’s presence mean to Cammie?
A. Providing pain relief and companionship.
B. Supporting trust-rebuilding and wound care.
C. Ensuring emotional comfort and physical recovery.
D. Offering emotional support and mobility motivation.
7. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A US-based Firm Specializes in Prosthetic Legs
B. Caregivers Contribute to Helping Injured Camels
C. Cooperative Efforts Were Made to Save Poor Camels
D. A Pakistani Camel Relearns to Walk with a Prosthetic Leg
C
Over the course of the 1990s, an average of 20.5 million American children ages 7 to 17hopped on a bike six or more times a year. Now such scenes are rare. Data from an authoritative association prove that number has fallen by nearly half, to about 10.9 million in 2023, with under5% riding “frequently”.
With this decline, kids are losing more than a potential mode of transport. Biking supports children’s independence and overall health in a way that many activities cannot. Also, it’s much more affordable especially if you buy a used bike. Kids aren’t the only ones who benefit when they start getting around on two wheels. The research has shown that when children ride a bike in the open, parents feel more of a connection to their neighbors, and many people begin to feel safer.
As fewer kids go out, however, all those benefits are gone. Nancy Pullen-Seufert, the director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School, said kids do want to bike, but conditions on many streets don’t exactly inspire confidence. The traffic in their neighborhood makes riding too dangerous or that their parents won’t let them go on their own. In many places, this fear is well founded. American roadways have gotten faster and busier. And over the past 30 years, the average U. S. passenger vehicle has gotten larger and heavier. These machines can be much more intimidating to people on bikes.
Children need space to bike. By adding more bike-friendly infrastructure (基础设施) — lower traffic speeds, separated bike lanes, calmer crossroads — local governments could encourage children and other residents to start riding again. In the interim (临时), teaching children how to share the road with drivers is mostly up to caregivers. Finding safe-enough spots for practice might be tough in some cities. But with a little creativity, parents can track down dead ends, streets closed to cars, unused parking lots, or parks with paved pathways to let their kids spread out and find their bearings in relatively calm surroundings.
8. What might happen with the decline in children’s biking?
A. Weakened children’s well- being.
B. Improved children’s independence.
C. Strengthened neighborhood social ties.
D. Lessened American household expenses.
9. What does the underlined word “intimidating” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Familiar. B. Attractive. C. Terrifying. D. Interesting.
10. Which of the following statements would Nancy Pullen-Seufert most probably agree with?
A. Larger vehicles have little impact on cyclists’ safety.
B. Parental permission is the only barrier to kids cycling.
C. Safer street designs could help restore children’s cycling.
D. Children have lost interest in cycling as a leisure activity.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Who to blame? B. Where to bike?
C. What to come? D. How to change?
D
Twice a year, when animals like bears and squirrels are either curling up for a deep sleep or stretching their way into spring, migratory birds are getting ready to take epic journeys over land and sea.
And in so doing, they play a crucial role in keeping nature in balance. As they fly from one place to another, pollinating plants, spreading seeds and controlling pests by eating insects and other invertebrates (无脊椎动物), they help to maintain ecosystem health, which in turn contributes to food security. And that’s not all. Francisco Rilla, a wildlife biologist and consultant to the UN, said migratory birds also serve as “bioindicators”. In other words, because they tend to avoid polluted areas, their movements provide useful information in the assessment of water and air quality.
Migrating birds use the sun, stars, coastlines and large bodies of water to guide them on their journeys across the world. But some places where they stop to rest and refuel along the coasts are being altered by floods connected to rising sea levels. Small crustaceans (甲科动物), which are an important food source for migratory birds, can struggle to build their shells and skeletons (骨架) in oceans made more acidic by having to absorb more carbon dioxide. And this has a knock-on effect on migratory birds. Without sufficient food, they are less likely to survive tough journeys or successfully reproduce.
Though humans often feed birds, Rilla said putting food out for migratory birds can do them more harm than good. If they are given bread and seeds meant for people, they might feel too full to eat the things that provide them with crucial nutrients. He added that putting food in places where it will be easy to spot could expose birds to predators. Instead, Rilla recommended helping these travelers by urging governments to expand the network of protected areas through international treaties.
This year’s World Migratory Bird Day emphasizes promoting the coexistence between humans and birds. If migratory birds start to disappear, it could affect agriculture and the food chain. In other words, as Rilla said, “whatever happens to them could also happen to us.”
12. What is the main role of migratory birds in ecosystems?
A. Improving food quality. B. Inspiring airplane design.
C. Maintaining ecological balance. D. Indicating animals’ migration paths.
13. How does climate change affect migratory birds?
A. By polluting coastlines. B. By disturbing their reproduction.
C. By confusing their navigation. D. By reducing their food sources.
14. What does Rilla advise helping migratory birds?
A. Feeding them nutrient-rich food.
B. Expanding protected areas globally.
C. Creating safe rest stops along coasts.
D. Teaching people to avoid disturbing them.
15. What does the last sentence in the text imply?
A. Humans depend on migratory birds.
B. Migratory birds need human protection.
C. Birds and humans face the same problems.
D. The disappearance of birds is unavoidable.

In the blistering heat (酷热) of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, I watched the elderly woman struggle with a walker and bags of groceries. I’d seen her before, each time feeling guilty I didn’t offer her a lift.
This day, however, slowing down, I opened the window and called out, “Need a ride?” The woman looked tired, with sweat pouring down her exhausted face. “Let me help you with your groceries,” I added.
Getting out of the car, I placed her walker and bags into my trunk. I helped the woman into the passenger seat, and we were off.
She directed me to go farther south, chatting as if we’d known each other for years. Her name was Ida. I found her delightful.
It was starting to get dark. We continued down unfamiliar streets until she finally pointed to an old apartment building where she lived. I began to feel uneasy. Several noisy young men in their early twenties had gathered around the entrance. They were smoking something and appeared threatening. Some were on motorcycles, and one, wearing a hoodie (连帽夹克) over his bushy, long hair, was staring at me intently, too intently and smiling.
I stopped the car and Ida directed a couple of the guys to help with her cart and groceries. She thanked me, and I drove away as fast as I could.
Suddenly I was interrupted by the roar of a motorcycle behind me. Slowing down, I recognized the biker from the apartment house, the one with the hoodie and bushy hair. He didn’t pass me but continued to drive at the same speed as me, waving for me to stop.
No way was I going to stop for a total stranger on a deserted street. In a panic, I reached down for my purse to get my cell phone. I had to call 911. But I felt an empty seat. My purse wasn’t there! “No! She stole my purse!” I thought.

My Declaration at Eighteen
I’m Li Hua, thrilled to share my 18-year-old declaration.
Once a shy girl struggling in group projects, I regained courage last semester to join a science research team. Initially, I was scared to talk for fear of awkwardness. I pushed myself to exchange ideas — staying up late, adjusting experiment plans when data went wrong, and managing conflicts with patience. Together we overcame countless difficulties, finally achieving first prize. This experience has been carved in my heart: growth blooms when we step out of comfort zones.
At 18, environmental science lights my passion. I’ll aim for a top university, obtaining professional knowledge to deal with climate challenges. I am determined to start small — organizing campus recycling drives, to grow into a responsible adult who turns enthusiasm into action.

【答案】One possible version:
Then I noticed that a different purse was on the floor of my car. The biker was right outside my window, waving my purse! I couldn’t believe my eyes. I pulled over to the curb, and the young man stopped his motorcycle by the passenger side. Through the window I had opened, he handed me my purse. “Grandma sent me to give you this. She picked it up by mistake. She is so sorry.” He was still smiling. This time, his smile didn’t appear threatening, simply gracious. I was speechless as I regretted that I mistook his goodwill for something else.
I handed him Ida’s purse in shame. Groping in my purse, I quickly retrieved a few dollars. I wanted to reward him ever so slightly, but he had disappeared into the night. I did manage to yell, “Thank you!” I never had a chance to say I was sorry for my thoughts. Sometimes, we think we know a person’s character because they don’t conform to what we believe is the proper, suitable way to be. They may not drive a stylish car, live on the “right” side of town, or dress in what we consider to be fashionable, but who’s to say they are not equal to or better than we are?
