Home workouts have become more and more popular in recent years, especially for students who don’t have much time to go to the gym. You don’t need expensive equipment to exercise at home.
There are many benefits to home workouts. First, they save time. You don’t have to spend time going to a gym, so you can fit exercise into even the busiest school schedule. Second, home workouts are flexible. You can choose when to exercise, whether it’s early in the morning before class or in the evening after finishing homework. Third, they are low-cost. Most home exercises use your body weight, like push-ups, sit-ups and squats, so you don’t need to pay for a gym membership.
Different home workouts suit different goals. If you want to build strength, try body weight training like lunges and planks. For cardio (有氧运动), jumping jacks, high knees or dancing to music are great choices. Yoga and stretching are perfect for relieving stress from studying and improving flexibility. It’s important to start slowly and not push yourself too hard at first — even 15 to 20 minutes a day is enough to see results.
Sticking to a home workout routine can be hard, so it’s helpful to set small goals. For example, aim to do 10 push-ups a day and slowly increase the number. You can also work out with family members to make it more fun. Remember, consistency is key — short daily workouts are better than one long period once a week.
7.What is one benefit of home workouts mentioned?
A.It is time-consuming. B.There is no fixed time.
C.It requires no equipment. D.It has a good effect on weight loss.
8.Why is it important to set small goals for home workouts?
A.To buy more exercise equipment. B.To exercise with family members.
C.To make it easier to follow the routine. D.To finish workouts in a shorter time.

Interesting Festivals in the World Throwing tomatoes — Spain
Spain takes “tomato fights” to a whole new level. But the tomatoes are being thrown, not eaten. The festival takes place on the last Wednesday in August. Trucks carry tomatoes in to the square. People rush to the tomatoes and throw them into the crowd.
Rolling cheese — England
The festival is celebrated in May. It takes place on Cooper’s Hill. A large wheel of cheese is rolled down Cooper’s Hill. The festival is actually a race where people run down the hill after the rolling cheese. The first person to cross the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese.
Burning man — The United States
The Burning Man Festival is held annually, spanning from the last Sunday in August to the first Monday in September (Labor Day). The festival takes place in Black Rock Desert. The best part of the festival is the burning of a large sculpture of a man.
Pouring water — Thailand
The Songkran Festival is the celebration of the New Year in Thailand. Rather than a single day, Thailand celebrates the New Year from April 13th to April 15th. Thai people run after each other, pouring water. Songkran is one of the most important reasons why foreigners travel to the beautiful land.

The upcoming effort will be the second phase of a project funded by Ford Motor Co. that teams the Ann Arbor University with a local driving school. During phase one of the study, researchers found that students with autism spectrum disorder detected fewer risks than control participants during simulated (模拟的) drives. But, according to lead researcher Elise Hodges, some extra work behind the wheel did the trick. “Those folks that underwent training improved in two-thirds of risks in the simulated drive,” said Hodges.
Tate Ellwood-Mielewski, who was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at age 3, is among those who plan to get back in the driver’s seat for phase two of the study. “I do want to be able to drive and get to places where I want to go,” said Ellwood-Mielewski, a 23-year-old from Ann Arbor whose mother, Debbie Mielewski, a technical fellow of sustainability at Ford, was instrumental in pulling together the partners to make the study happen. Mielewski had been harboring a growing concern about how her son would survive in the future with no driver’s license and his parents no longer around.
Ann Arbor Academy, a school for students with learning and social differences, hosted driving lessons. Hodges designed the simulated drives and oversaw the study. Ford footed the bill. The goal, in part, was to provide an opportunity for those with autism spectrum disorder to improve their driving skills. “Many of them would like to drive, but wanting to drive and being able to drive are two different things,” Hodges said.
Hodges said she hopes the individualized driving sessions planned for phase two will bear fruit. She hopes similar programs appear elsewhere. “In the best case, I would hope that parents would learn that their, teens or young adults who have autism spectrum disorder actually may be able to drive successfully,” she said. “And there may be some tools out there that they may not have been aware of.”
14.What did the researchers find in the first stage of the study?
A.One-third of major risks can’t be avoided.
B.Training can improve special students’ driving skills.
C.It’s dangerous for students with autism spectrum disorder to drive.
D.Students with autism spectrum disorder can drive as well as normal ones.
15.Why is Debbie Mielewski interested in the study?
A.She intends to be a famous technician.
B.She believes driving skills are essential.
C.She is a responsible and caring mother.
D.She hopes her son will step into her shoes.
16.What does Hodges point out in paragraph 3?
A.Most people have a strong desire for driving.
B.A great number of people can’t afford to drive.
C.Driving proves a necessary task for special people.
D.There are some people who can’t drive without help.
17.What’s Hodges’s attitude to special people’s driving?
A.Favorable. B.Indifferent. C.Ambiguous. D.Doubtful.

Carl Wieman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist at Stanford University, excelled in the lab, where he created the Bose-Einstein condensate (玻色—爱因斯坦凝聚态). However, his mastery in the lab did not extend to the classroom. For years, he wrestled with what seemed to be a straightforward task: making undergraduates comprehend physics as he did. Laying it out for them — explaining, even demonstrating the core concepts of the discipline—was not working. Despite his clear explanations, his students’ capacity to solve the problems he posed to them remained inadequate.
It was in an unexpected place that he found the key to the problem: not in his classrooms but among the graduate students(研究生) who came to work in his lab. When his PH.D.candidates entered the lab, Wieman noticed, their habits of thought were no less narrow and rigid than the undergraduates. Within a year or two, however, these same graduate students transformed into the flexible thinkers he was trying so earnestly, and unsuccessfully, to cultivate. “Some kind of intellectual process must have been missing from the traditional education,” Wieman recounts.
A major factor in the graduate students’ transformation, Wieman concluded, was their experience of intense social engagement around a body of knowledge — the hours they spent advising, debating with, and recounting anecdotes to one another. In 2019, a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences backed this idea. Tracking the intellectual advancement of several hundred graduate students in the sciences over the course of four years, its authors found that the development of crucial skills such as generating hypotheses (假设), designing experiments, and analyzing data was closely related to the students’ engagement with their peers in the lab, rather than the guidance they received from their faculty mentors (导师).
Wieman is one of a growing number of Stanford professors who are bringing this “active learning” approach to their courses. His aspiration is to move science education away from the lecture format, toward a model that is more active and more engaged.
21.What problem did Carl Wieman have with his undergraduates?
A.Making them excel in the lab. B.Demonstrating lab experiments.

A.Intense lab work. B.Peer pressure and evaluation.
C.Academic interaction with fellows. D.Engagement with external society.
24.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Transforming Graduates’ Habits B.Carl Wieman’s Nobel Prize Journey

A Taste of China explores diverse cuisine. In this episode, we’re in Chengdu, Sichuan, exploring its spicy dishes with culinary (烹饪的) experts.
Mei: Could you tell us how you fell in love with Sichuan cuisine?
Jing: I grew up in Canada, feeling quite disconnected from the identity of being Chinese. After university, I went to China to work and began digging into Chinese food. At first, I was just amazed by its diversity and complexity. But the more I studied, the more I realized how little we know about Chinese food in the West. The passion for Chinese food led me to found a restaurant called Fly By Jing. It is inspired by the flavors of “fly restaurants” or cangying guan. These restaurants in Chengdu are so delicious that no matter how shabby or lacking in atmosphere, people will find them and flock to them.
Mei: What do you love about Sichuan?
Fuchsia: There is a saying that if you are young, you should not go to Sichuan. Its capital city — Chengdu is a relaxing, pleasure-loving city, so ambitious people should steer clear! Sichuan is best known for its folk cooking and street food. You can just go into quite ordinary-looking restaurants and have a delicious meal.
Mei: What do you think is one of the main things Westerners don’t know about Sichuan cuisine?
John: One of the ironies is that while Sichuan cuisine has become popular internationally, people are often taken in by this stereotype (刻板印象) that it is just about the great drama of loads of chilies and peppers in pools of oil. But the real heart and soul of Sichuan cooking lies in the flavoring. I would say that sophistication and flavoring variety is something that people often miss out on.

Red pandas live in forests where they prefer to be near water and have a good supply of bamboo. They are mostly active in the late evening and early morning, and they sleep during most of the day. They take the trees for shelter and to hide from predators (捕食者).
About 98% of a red panda’s main food is bamboo. They need a lot of it to survive — around 2 kilograms each day. However, finding enough bamboo is difficult as the red panda’s habitat becomes smaller. When people move into the red panda’s area, they clear forests for housing, farming and mining.
Natural disasters such as landslides, floods, heavy snow and rainfall have also destroyed their habitats. Forest fires and issues with bamboo flowering have similar effects on the red panda’s habitat. As people move into the area, they often collect bamboo, leaving less for red pandas to eat.
Although the red panda is endangered, steps are being made to save the species and its habitat. China has 46 protected areas, covering about 65% of the species’ habitat in the country. With worldwide support, there are at least 19 protected areas in India, 5 in Bhutan and 3 in Myanmar.
The Red Panda Network is a nonprofit organization that protects red pandas and their habitat. They work with local community groups to establish wildlife feeding centers, train forest protectors, and work with villagers to establish protected areas. The WWF is also working to protect red pandas. Because more than a third of its habitat is in Nepal, the group works with yak herders (牦牛牧民) there to lower their effect on the red panda’s habitat.

In 2025, Chinese architect Liu Jiakun won the Pritzker Prize, known as the “Nobel Prize of architecture,” for creating buildings that bring peace and beauty to everyday life. Born in 1956 in Sichuan, Liu grew up surrounded by plain communist-style buildings and traditional Chinese wooden houses. His work uniquely mixes old Chinese traditions with modern ideas.
Liu’s career started with two identities: by day, he worked as an architect for a government company, drawing building plans; by night, he wrote stories. Though his early job at a design institute in Tibet felt repetitive, his love for writing secretly influenced his architecture. “Designing buildings is like telling a story,” Liu explained. “Each space has its own flow, like the beginning, middle, and end of a book.” This storytelling approach is visible in his projects. For example, at Suzhou’ s Imperial Kiln Museum, he combined ancient brick-making techniques with bold modern shapes. In Chengdu’s Xicun Courtyard, he built huge sloping walkways where people ride bikes, jog, and skate, turning concrete into lively public spaces.
Liu’s concept became clear after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. He created “Rebirth Bricks” using broken pieces from destroyed buildings, helping communities rebuild. The Pritzker judges praised how he “transforms ruins into hope.” His design for a panda nursery at Chengdu’s research base also shows his belief that “architecture should care for all living things.”
From a young writer to a world-famous architect, Liu connects the past and present through his buildings. As the Pritzker award statement says, his works are “gifts to human culture,” proving that Chinese traditions can inspire modern architecture. By honoring Liu, the world celebrates China’ s growing role in shaping how we live and build.
17.What is the main purpose of the article?
A.To explain the glorious history of the Pritzker Prize.
B.To introduce the switch of Liu’s career and the outcome.
C.To present Liu’s architectural achievements and philosophy.
D.To discuss the impact of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake on Liu’s concept.
18.According to the text, what was Liu Jiakun’s early career like?
A.He threw himself wholeheartedly into writing novels.
B.He immediately became famous for innovative designs.
C.He worked as a full-time architect while pursuing writing.
D.He specialized in designing earthquake-resistant buildings.
19.What cultural value is reflected in Liu’s use of “Rebirth Bricks”?
A.Pursuit of luxury and uniqueness.
B.Preservation of traditional techniques.
C.Combination of tradition and modernity.
D.Dream of harmony between man and nature.
20.Which statement best reflects Liu’s design concept?
A.Designers must favor profit over beauty.
B.Historical styles should never be changed.
C.Design should combine storytelling with function.
D.Architecture should follow strict modern standards.

For emperor penguins, sea ice is essential to survival. The iconic birds, found only in Antarctica, breed, lay their eggs and raise their chicks on fast sea ice. They arrive at their breeding sites in late March. In May and June, they lay their eggs, which hatch after 65 days during the Antarctic winter. The chicks then remain on the ice until their fluff (绒毛) down is replaced by waterproof feathers, finally fledging (长出羽毛) in the summer months of December and January.
Last year, sea ice levels in Antarctica were at an all-time low— a record first set in 2021. The Bellingshausen Sea region, to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula, saw the most extreme reduction of sea ice, with some areas experiencing a 100% loss. Of the five known emperor penguins’ habitats in the Bellingshausen Sea region, all but one experienced what was most likely a total breeding failure due to the loss of sea ice, according to a paper published today in Nature Communications Earth & Environment. Satellite imagery clearly showed the sea ice had broken up before the chicks would have developed enough to survive on their own.
“We have never seen emperor penguins fail to breed at this scale in a single season,” the study’s lead author, Peter Fretwell of the British Antarctic Survey, said in a statement. “The loss of sea ice in this region during the Antarctie summer made it very unlikely that displaced chicks would survive. ”
The study team also believe their findings support a projection that if present warming rates continue, more than 80% of emperor penguins’ habitats will disappear, meaning they have too few individuals to support a population, by 2100.
21.When may emperor penguins’ eggs hatch?
A.In May. B.In August. C.In November. D.In January.
22.What can we infer from the second and third paragraphs?
A.All emperor penguins suffered breeding failure.
B.Chicks can grow up before the sea ice breaks up.
C.Sea ice levels in Antarctica reached the lowest in 2022.
D.Most areas experienced a 100% sea ice loss in Antarctica.
23.What’s the function of paragraph 4?
A.Supporting ideas. B.Giving examples.
C.Making conclusions. D.Serving as transitions.
24.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Chicks are bred difficultly in Antarctica.
B.Emperor penguins fail to breed their chicks.
C.Sea ice loss affects emperor penguins’ survival.
D.Climate change affects sea ice loss in Antarctica.

Nature, with its beauty and simplicity, always offers powerful and clear life lessons when we least expect them. From the perseverance of a tree to the persistence of a river, there’s so much we can learn.
Nature reminds us that we must be flexible and embrace change. When a storm howls through the town, uproots the trees and destroys the houses, we have no choice but to dry our tears, adapt to the sudden change, and rebuild what has been lost during the storm. Experiences like this often throw challenges to us. If we don’t learn how to deal with these unexpected occurrences, we might find ourselves struggling through them without any idea where our lives are headed next!
Flowers wait for the right conditions to amaze the world at the most beautiful moment and seeds endure a long journey to become plants or trees, despite many not making it. But if you look close at these little guys, you’ll see that they’re actually pretty cool.
Bees busily collecting nectar (花蜜) among flowers and migrant birds winging their ways in the sky seem to be ordinary. However, behind these lies the great collaboration related to survival. Isn’t human society the same? In fact, we need it more than ever!
When walking among the mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas, don’t forget to stop your quick footsteps, look up at the leisurely white clouds, bend down to smell the fragrance of the flowers, and let the golden sunlight shine on your face. Immerse yourself in the embrace of nature, appreciating its heavenly beauty. In this way, gratitude will quietly take root in your heart.
The lessons of nature are like countless stars, illuminating your way forward. With its wisdom, you will surely write a wonderful chapter of your life.

Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage is passed down through the generations. It is in the buildings and structures around us. It is in the arts and artifacts (手工艺品) we treasure. It lives in the languages we speak and the stories we tell. But today, it is under attack as never before. Not only are the damages of time threatening our cultural heritage, but conflicts, climate change, globalization and tourism are all exacting a heavy price. Technology is now the most important weapon in the battle. Here’s how technology is preserving our cultural heritage.
As you can imagine, creating the replicas (复制品)by 2D images is extremely time-consuming. Increasingly, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms (算法) allow millions of images to be stored in a matter of hours. AI will also make restoration and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and better than previous methods.
Virtual reality (VR) technology will play a leading role in preserving our cultural heritage in the coming years. Many of the most important sites and architecture are easily damaged. Human interaction with these locations is doing a great deal of harm. Wastes pile up everywhere, causing serious problems. As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We’ll all finally be able to walk through places, look at (and touch) artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes.
Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved by technology. Efforts in research, data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.
29.What does the underlined word “exacting” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Paying. B.Cutting. C.Receiving. D.Demanding.
30.What is the advantage of AI in preserving cultural heritage?
A.It generates 2D images. B.It makes restoration easier.
C.It makes preservation safer. D.It creates replicas in seconds.
31.How does VR help to preserve cultural heritage?
A.By recycling huge amounts of waste. B.By reducing human impact on the site.
C.By forbidding visitors from touching artifacts. D.By educating people about the sites’ importance.
32.What is the author’s attitude towards AI in cultural protection?
A.Ignoring. B.Objective. C.Supportive. D.Disagreeing.

The 15-Minute City
The “15-minute city” is an urban planning concept where all daily needs — work, school, groceries, parks, healthcare — are within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from home. Paris and Melbourne are actively testing this model. Supporters say it reduces car use, cuts pollution, improves public health, and strengthens local communities.
But critics point to challenges. In many existing cities, rich neighborhoods already have amenities, while poor areas are “food deserts” with no supermarkets nearby. Making every neighborhood a 15-minute city requires huge investment and political will. Also, some people enjoy long commutes or prefer driving.
Nevertheless, the idea has gained traction since the pandemic, as remote work made local living more possible. A recent study in Barcelona found that residents in 15-minute pilot zones walked 22% more and reported higher life satisfaction.
Q1 (Short answer – table completion):Complete the following table based on the passage:
Advantage of 15-minute city Challenge mentioned
1. _______________ 1. _______________
2. _______________ 2. _______________
Q2 (Extended writing – 50–60 words):
You are a high school student in a neighborhood that has no park and only a small convenience store. Write a letter to the city planner suggesting one specific change to move toward a 15-minute city in your area. Explain two benefits of your suggestion. Use ideas from the passage if helpful.

9.The underlined word “consistency” in paragraph 4 probably means__________.
A.changing workout plans often B.keeping doing exercise regularly
C.choosing different workouts each time D.doing exercise at the same time every day
10.What can be a suitable title for the text?

C.Facilitating their all-round development. D.Enhancing their physics problem-solving.
22.Which of the following best describes the graduate students who first joined Wieman’s lab?
A.Limited in thinking. B.Resistant to new ideas.
C.Flexible and earnest. D.Experienced and cooperative.
23.What is crucial for developing students’ intelligent thought according to the 2019 study?

6.What made Jing decide to found Fly By Jing?
A.Her love for Chinese food.
B.Her desire to get Chinese identity.
C.Her understanding of Chinese culture.

A.Stay away. B.Move forward. C.Pass down. D.Pull through.
8.What is the common misunderstanding of Sichuan cuisine?
A.It may cause health problems. B.It is very popular in the world.
C.Its soul lies in the amazing flavor. D.It is all about chilies and peppers in oil.
9.What is the text mainly about?
A.Ways to make local food.
B.The charm of Sichuan food.
C.Experts’tips on Sichuan cuisine.

13.Why is it challenging for red pandas to find enough food?
A.They are not active hunters. B.Their habitats are short of water.
C.Their habitats are threatened. D.They struggle to identify bamboos.

25.How does the author emphasize the flexibility in paragraph 2?
A.By quoting experts. B.By giving an example.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。通过描绘自然界的景象和生物的行为传达了关于生活、适应变化、坚持与努力、合作与生存以及感恩与欣赏自然之美的深刻哲理。
【详解】25.推理判断题。根据第二段“Nature reminds us that we must be flexible and embrace change. When a storm howls through the town, uproots the trees and destroys the houses, we have no choice but to dry our tears, adapt to the sudden change, and rebuild what has been lost during the storm. Experiences like this often throw challenges to us. If we don’t learn how to deal with these unexpected occurrences, we might find ourselves struggling through them without any idea where our lives are headed next!(大自然提醒我们,我们必须灵活应变,拥抱变化。当一场风暴呼啸着穿过小镇,连根拔起树木,摧毁房屋,我们别无选择,只能擦干眼泪,适应突如其来的变化,重建在风暴中失去的东西。这样的经历经常给我们带来挑战。如果我们不学会如何处理这些意想不到的事情,我们可能会发现自己在挣扎中不知道下一步的生活将走向何方!)”可知,本段作者通过举例子来强调灵活应变。故选B项。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段“Flowers wait for the right conditions to amaze the world at the most beautiful moment and seeds endure a long journey to become plants or trees, despite many not making it.(花朵等待合适的条件,在最美丽的时刻让世界惊叹,种子经历漫长的旅程,成为植物或树木,尽管许多人没有成功)”可知,花和种子都经历漫长的旅程,才成功,所以我们能从花和种子的旅程中学到耐心对成长很重要。故选A项。
27.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“When walking among the mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas, don’t forget to stop your quick footsteps, look up at the leisurely white clouds, bend down to smell the fragrance of the flowers, and let the golden sunlight shine on your face. Immerse yourself in the embrace of nature, appreciating its heavenly beauty. In this way, gratitude will quietly take root in your heart.(漫步在山川湖海之间,别忘了停下你快速的脚步,抬头看看悠然的白云,弯腰闻闻花香,让金色的阳光照在脸上。让自己沉浸在大自然的怀抱中,欣赏它的天堂之美。这样,感恩之心就会在你心中悄然扎根)”可知,作者对自然是感激的。故选D项。
28.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Nature, with its beauty and simplicity, always offers powerful and clear life lessons when we least expect them. From the perseverance of a tree to the persistence of a river, there’s so much we can learn.(大自然,以其美丽和简单,总是在我们最意想不到的时候提供强大而清晰的人生课程。从树的坚持到河的坚持,我们可以学到很多东西)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了自然界的景象和生物的行为传达了深刻哲理,所以C项“自然看似简单,却展现了深刻的真理。”最能描述文章的主旨。故选C项。

【导语】本文为一篇说明文。因为时间、气候变化、全球化和旅游业,历史文化遗产正在遭受着前所未有的破坏,文章主要介绍现代技术(AI和VR)在文化遗产的保护方面的应用。
29.词义猜测题。根据第一段中“But today, it is under attack as never before. Not only are the damages of time threatening our cultural heritage,”(但今天,它受到了前所未有的攻击。 故选A项。
30.细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“AI will also make restoration and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and vastly superior to previous methods. (人工智能还将使现有文化遗产的修复和保护比以往的方法更容易和更胜一筹。)”可知,人工智能使现有文化遗产的修复变得更容易,修复得更好。故选B。
31.推理判断题。根据第三段“As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We'll all eventually be able to walk through places, look at (and touch!) artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes. (随着越来越多的文化遗产和文物被数字化测绘和记录,VR技术将越来越多地成为人们体验它们的方式。我们最终都将能够在不用亲眼去看它们的情况下穿行于各个地方,观看(和触摸!)文物和艺术品。)”可知,VR技术使我们不用亲临遗址现场,却依旧能感受历史,从而减少人类对文化遗址地的影响以及破坏。故选B。
32.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved via technology. Efforts in research, data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world. (最后,我们的文化遗产将通过技术来保存。在研究、数据共享和项目工作方面的努力将有助于促进和保护世界各国的文化遗产)”可推知,作者对科技在保护文化遗产方面的应用持支持态度。故选C。

【参考答案】
Q1:
Advantages: reduces car use/pollution; improves public health; strengthens local communities (any two).
Challenges: inequality between rich and poor areas; high investment needed; some people prefer driving.
Q2 示例:
Dear City Planner,
please build a small community garden on the empty lot near my school. First, it would give us a green space within a 10-minute walk, improving mental health (as the Barcelona study shows). Second, neighbors could grow fresh food, helping our “food desert” problem without a full supermarket.
