Recently, a low-budget (低成本的) Chinese film named Dear You (also known as Love Letters to Grandma) has become an unexpected box office hit. Filmed almost completely in the Chaoshan dialect (潮汕方言), this moving drama has touched the hearts of millions, especially young viewers.
The story is about a family discovery. A grandson travels to Thailand to find out why his grandfather left China many years ago and never returned. There, he uncovers a touching secret: a Thai-Chinese woman had been secretly writing letters and sending money to his grandmother in his grandfather’s name for 18 years to keep a promise. In Chinese history, these letters combined with money are called Qiaopi. For families left behind, they were both financial (经济的) support and an emotional connection.
The film has received high praise for its true social background. It beautifully shows Chaoshan traditions, such as Gongfu tea and the colorful Yingge Dance. However, what really makes viewers cry is the strength of the women in the story. They showed deep-rooted trust and love that could transcend (跨越) oceans.
Today, many young people live a fast-paced life and often communicate through instant (即时的) messages. This movie encourages them to slow down and listen to the stories of older generations. As one viewer said, “It reminds us that behind every elderly person, there was once a story of youth, passion, and deep love.”
3. What is special about the movie Dear You?
A. It was filmed with a huge budget.
B. It is mainly in Chaoshan dialect.
C. It is focused on modern city life.
4. What does the underlined word “Qiaopi” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. A kind of traditional hot tea.
B. A colorful dance in southern China.
C. Money and letters from Chinese abroad.
5. Why do the viewers cry after watching the film?
A. Because of the strength, trust, and love of the women.
B. Because of the fast-paced lifestyle of young people.
C. Because of the beautiful views of Southeast Asia.
6. What is the purpose of the movie?
A. To encourage us to send more text messages.
B. To tell us to move back to our hometowns.
C. To remind us to slow down and listen to the elders.

Let Deaf People “See” Conversations
A new and exciting invention now allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Using augmented reality (AR) glasses and a smartphone, deaf and hearing-impaired (听力受损的) people are also able to join in everyday conversations.
The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he had Christmas dinner with his family. The man saw his 97-year-old hearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. The images of his grandfather always watching TV shows with subtitles (字幕) crossed Scarfe’s mind. He suddenly realized that maybe the AR glasses could help.
Scarfe got to work, partnering with Nreal, an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out. The glasses have a microphone that receives the sound from the environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that sound. By special software, these subtitles then appear on the user’s glasses screen.
The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground as over 12 million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it could change the lives of some 430 million people. This represents 5% of the world’s population and includes 70 million people with total hearing loss.
This is a game-changer for the deaf. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, says, “As a deaf person myself, I am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so surprised. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.”
7. Why did Dan Scarfe develop the AR glasses?
A. To help his 97-year-old grandfather join family talks.
B. To make money by selling to deaf people.
C. To design new AR glasses as Nreal asked.
8. How do the AR glasses help deaf people “see” conversations?
A. They send sound to a speaker for deaf people to hear.
B. They turn sound into subtitles and show them on the screen in real time.
C. They connect to the TV to show subtitles for all programs.
9. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. The UK was chosen for its large hearing-loss population.
B. Over 430 million people have tested the glasses.
C. The company tested the glasses only in the UK.
10. What’s Mark Atkinson’s attitude towards this technology?
A. Worried. B. Supportive. C. Uncertain.
【答案】7. A 8. B 9. A 10. B
【解析】

【8题详解】
第一段“A new and exciting invention now allows deaf people to see conversations in real time.”和第三段“The glasses have a microphone that receives the sound from the environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that sound. By special software, these subtitles then appear on the user’s glasses screen.”表明,这款AR眼镜的工作原理就是将声音转换为字幕,并实时显示在眼镜屏幕上。
【9题详解】
第四段“The UK was chosen as a testing ground as over 12 million adults in Britain have hearing loss.”提到,英国被选中是因为它拥有大量的听障人口。
【10题详解】
最后一段Mark Atkinson的表述“I am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so surprised. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.”可推知,Mark Atkinson非常认可这项技术,持支持态度。

Cachita lived in a crowded apartment building in a busy Caribbean city. The building had a large backyard, and it was always noisy. Neighbors sang, chatted loudly on the phone, fixed old cars, played guitar, and even raised parrots on the roof. Cachita could almost never find a quiet place to study.
One day, a new neighbor named Montoya moved in. He was quiet and always alone. He wore dark glasses and used a cane (拐杖). Cachita learned that he was blind, but he made beautiful sculptures (雕像). “I see with my hands,” he told her.
Cachita had trouble with math and her final test was coming, so she felt hopeless. She tried to study in the backyard, but the noise drove her crazy. She went to the park, but still couldn’t understand the problems. “I hate math. This is impossible!” she cried.
Montoya heard her and offered to help. At first, Cachita was reluctant (勉强的) because she had always depended on herself. But finally she accepted. Montoya turned out to be a math teacher before. 【答案】
例文
Together, We Create Light
A single light is dim (微弱的), but many lights shine bright.
Last term, in my study group, we had a hard time preparing for a science project. I was stuck on data analysis. My teammates noticed and offered help—one shared methods, another explained concepts. With their support, we finished the project successfully.
In my opinion, togetherness means sharing both happiness and difficulties. Just like lights in the dark, our small efforts combine to create warmth. When we care for each other, even weak lights become a bright light that guides us forward.

C
A. Worried. B. Supportive. C. Uncertain.

He worked with her for a whole afternoon. He explained math problems patiently. He also gave her advice: “If you cannot see a solution, skip ahead (跳过) and come back later.”
On the test day, Cachita felt nervous but remembered his words. She passed with a 95! She ran home shouting the good news. The neighbors decided to throw a party. Each neighbor offered some food—some pumpkins, some beef, some sweet potatoes… Cachita had an idea, “Let’s make a big stew, a caldosa (炖菜), with everyone’s food.”
The party was a great success. The caldosa filled the backyard with delicious smells. Montoya danced and laughed. He was no longer the quiet stranger. Cachita turned to her mother and said, “I never want to move. This is like a big family.”
