Ever since I was a kid, I have been in the middle of a large circle of friends. Most of them are classmates in school. I always get on well with them. However, there was one exception (例外)— Jake, a math talent in my class. I seldom talked about anything with him because math was not my favorite subject. Things didn’t get better until October when I turned to Jake for help.
“Sure, I’d be happy to help you!” Jake said. I wasn’t expecting Jake would help me. I wasn’t sure until the moment when I found Jake knew my name. And yet here he was, happy to save me from drowning (淹死)in my sea of math problems.
During our study time, Jake was patient and creative, explaining the math problems to me over and over again. For the first time, I finally understood the difficult math formulas (公式)! The next day, I succeeded in solving a math problem in class. Everyone, including myself, was surprised. How proud I felt at that moment!
From then on, I became interested in math. I became much more focused (专注的) on math than I ever was before. And I always spent a lot of time on math. I made great progress in a short time.
The other day, our teacher showed us a math problem: “If you wrote all the numbers from one to one hundred, how many times would you write a nine?” Jake and I were the only ones who gave the correct answer.
This winter break, Jake and I decided to hang out together. He promised to show me the Math Museum downtown. I believe we will enjoy ourselves in the coming winter holiday.

C
①Sand, whether it’s on the beach or in the desert, seems simple and the same. But in fact, there are many differences between the two types of sand. Let’s explore these differences and learn more about sand.
②Beach sand is usually made up of crags (岩石碎片), small pieces of shells, coral, and other marine organisms (海洋生物). Over time, waves and the running of water break these larger pieces into smaller ones, which then form the sand we see on beaches. Beach sand is often smooth and rounded, giving people a pleasant feel. It’s also rich in minerals (矿物) and nutrients (营养物) that come from the ocean and land around it.
③Because of its rich mineral content, beach sand can support many kinds of marine life. Tiny creatures live in the beach, feeding on organic matter. These creatures are basic to the health of beach ecosystems
④Desert sand, on the other hand, is made up of tiny particles (颗粒) of rocks and stones that have been eroded by wind. It’s usually dry and not smooth, with sharp edges that can be uncomfortable to touch. Desert sand is short of the minerals and nutrients found in beach sand, making the desert a much harder environment for life to live in.
⑤Besides its harshness (粗糙), some plants and animals have special body structures to live in deserts. For example, some plants have developed deep roots to store water, while animals like camels have evolved (进化) to store water in their bodies.
⑥In short, beach sand and desert sand are different in their composition, texture (质地), and the environment they live in. Beach sand is rich in minerals and nutrients, supporting different kinds of marine life, while desert sand is dry and poor, with few plants and animals able to live there. Understanding these differences can help us enjoy the unique beauty of each type of sand.

第二段首句明确写道“Beach sand is usually made up of...”(海滩沙通常由……

The Zero-Waste Movement
For many years, people have tried to reduce waste through recycling. However, the world still produces about two billion tons of waste each year. The Zero-Waste Movement is a campaign (运动) against waste. People in the movement try to create zero waste in their lives. For most people, it is a completely new lifestyle. A zero-waste lifestyle prevents waste before it happens. ____36____
To follow a zero-waste lifestyle, zero-wasters mainly do two things. ____37____ And two, they reuse more. How do they do these two things?
To use less, zero-wasters live simply. Usually, they cook at home instead of eating out. They shop at second-hand stores instead of buying new items. ____38____ In other words, they do not live expensive lives. By living this way, zero-wasters produce less waste.
____39____ When shopping, they use reusable cloth bags. When getting takeout at restaurants, they use reusable containers. After eating, they pack their leftover food. When cleaning their houses, they use reusable cloth towels. And if something breaks, they fix it instead of buying a new one.
Each year, more people join the Zero-Waste Movement. ____40____ You can start small and reduce your waste more and more each day.
A. One, they use less.
B. Do you want to join?
C. Recycling is not even necessary.
D. They own one pair of shoes instead of owning five.
E. To reuse more, zero-wasters take different actions in their daily lives.
C 37. A 38. D 39. E 40. B
前文提到“A zero-waste lifestyle prevents waste before it happens”,说明这种生活方式重在预防而非事后处理。C选项“Recycling is not even necessary”正好承接此意,强调零浪费比回收更进一步。
后文出现“And two, they reuse more”,说明此处应填“One”开头的句子。A选项“One, they use less”与之形成“One... And two...”
前文列举了“cook at home”“shop at second-hand stores”等具体做法,D选项“They own one pair of shoes instead of owning five”是同样风格的生活细节,且后文“they do not live expensive lives”与少买鞋的节约生活一致。
E选项“To reuse more, zero-wasters take different actions in their daily lives”是对这些内容的总起概括。
后文说“You can start small and reduce your waste more and more each day”,这是对读者的号召。B选项“Do you want to join?”

根据下文“The next day Susan went to school early. When the competition began”可知,Susan第二天去学校参加的是一场比赛。
根据上下文Susan在画画并讨论颜料选择,以及后文“There in the middle of her picture was a blob(污点) of brown paint!”
根据后文“There in the middle of her picture was a blob(污点) of brown paint!”
根据后文“Suddenly, she dropped the brush right on the picture.”
根据后文“That little dog finished a good painting”及“the little dog seems to belong there”可知,Susan在棕色污点周围画了一只狗。
根据前文“turn bad into...”
Mr.King说道。
根据后文“I‘ve chosen three pictures, and I want you to say ____ one you like”可知,空格处引导宾语从句作say的宾语,从句中缺少定语修饰one,需用which表示“哪一幅”。
