Many people catch a cold in spring and autumn. It’s easy for us to catch a cold or get the flu because of viruses. Here is how viruses get into our bodies and make us ill.
Virus Healthy cell (细胞) A cell with viruses
● Viruses usually get in through the nose and the mouth.
● Viruses get into healthy cells.
● Cells with viruses will make thousands of new viruses and they will get into more healthy cells.
● We begin to feel ill. We may spread some viruses like the flu virus through a cough.
You may feel terrible, but actually, your body is trying to fight against the cold. Your temperature rises but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a running nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells.
Different people have different cures for colds. In some countries, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm drinks. Other people take the medicine to stop the fever. There is one interesting thing to note—some scientists say taking the medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it or kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own.

Thirdly, putting up information online is also a good idea to allow more people to know you are in need of help. If help doesn’t come, knock on the door to get attention from other people in the building.

The Mariana Trench is the deepest known place on Earth, hidden deep in the western Pacific Ocean, about 200 kilometers east of the Mariana Islands. This amazing underwater trench is shaped like a half-moon, reaching about 2,550 kilometers long and only 69 kilometers wide on average. Its deepest point, called Challenger Deep, reaches nearly 11,000 meters below the sea surface—deeper than the height of Mount Everest.
This amazing trench formed millions of years ago because of the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates (地壳板块). The heavy Pacific Plate slides slowly under the smaller Mariana Plate, creating this deep crack on the ocean floor. It is one of the most extreme environments on our planet. The water here is completely dark, with near-freezing temperatures and huge water pressure, which is more than 1,000 times stronger than that at the sea surface.
Surprisingly, life still lives in this harsh place. Scientists have found special deep-sea creatures, such as sea cucumbers, small worms and shrimp, living in the trench. These animals have strong bodies to live under high pressure and in cold, dark water.
However, human activities have even reached this faraway place. Researchers have found plastic waste at the bottom of the trench, reminding us that we need to protect our oceans. The Mariana Trench holds many mysteries of nature, and it reminds us how amazing and fragile (脆弱的) our planet is.
12.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.The formation of the trench. B.The depth of the trench.
C.The life in the trench. D.The pollution of the trench.

15.What will the writer probably talk about next?
A.How to protect our oceans. B.How to explore the deep sea further.
C.The history of the Mariana Trench. D.Ways to save deep sea animals.
【答案】12.A 13.D 14.B 15.A
【导语】本文介绍了马里亚纳海沟的地理位置、深度、极端环境条件、生活在其中的特殊生物以及科学家研究它的意义。
【详解】12.第二段首句“This amazing trench formed millions of years ago because of the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates (地壳板块).”直接点明段落主旨,介绍马里亚纳海沟的形成原因。
13.第二段“The water here is completely dark, with near-freezing temperatures and huge water pressure, which is more than 1,000 times stronger than that at the sea surface.”提到了这里完全黑暗(无光照),温度接近冰点,水压巨大,可知 A、B、C项均符合文意。第三段“Surprisingly, life still lives in this harsh place”表明海沟里有生物, D项不符合事实。
14.第二段的“completely dark”、“near-freezing temperatures”和“huge water pressure”表明,这是一个环境非常恶劣、生存条件艰难的地方。因此harsh意为“恶劣的、艰难的”,与hard意思最接近。
15.由最后一段“Researchers have found plastic waste at the bottom of the trench, reminding us that we need to protect our oceans”以及结尾强调地球的脆弱性可知,文章落脚点在于海洋保护,因此接下来最有可能讨论的是如何保护海洋。

13.The following are all about the environment of the Mariana Trench EXCEPT ________.

15.What will the writer probably talk about next?
