Lily used to be a girl who never said “no” to her friends. She was afraid that disagreeing would make her lose friends. So she always went along with whatever her friends suggested, even when she didn’t really want to.
One day, her friends decided to skip class to go to a concert. They asked Lily to join them. Lily felt uncomfortable. She knew skipping class was wrong, but she didn’t want to be the only one to say no. So she agreed. However, she felt so guilty that she couldn’t enjoy the concert at all.
That night, Lily told her father about her feelings. “I always do what others want,” she said. “I’m afraid to be different.”
Her father said nothing. He took out a small plant from the garden. “This plant grew in the shade,” he said. “See how weak its stem is? It never got enough sunlight because it was always following the shadow. Now look at this one.” He pointed to another plant that stood straight and strong in an open area. “This one got full sunlight because it dared to grow where no big tree blocked its way.”
Lily thought for a while. “You mean I should stand on my own?” she asked.
Her father smiled. “Having your own opinion doesn’t mean you are against your friends. True friends respect each other’s choices.”
From that day on, Lily started to express her true thoughts. To her surprise, her real friends stayed with her, and those who left were never true friends anyway.

In ancient China, there was a famous doctor named Hua Tuo. He lived during the Three Kingdoms period. People called him the “miracle doctor” because he could cure many difficult diseases.
One day, a soldier came to see Hua Tuo. The soldier had been wounded by an arrow in his arm. The arrowhead was stuck deep inside. Other doctors had tried to take it out, but the soldier felt great pain every time they touched it. The soldier was suffering day and night.
Hua Tuo examined the wound carefully. Then he gave the soldier a cup of a special drink. It was a kind of anesthetic (麻醉药) that Hua Tuo had invented. He called it “ma fei san”. 参考范文:
Never Give Up
Have you ever faced a difficulty and wanted to give up? I have, and I learned that persistence makes all the difference.
Last year, I tried to learn to ride a bike. I fell off many times and hurt my knees. I almost gave up. But my father encouraged me to keep trying. He said, “Every expert was once a beginner.” So I practiced every day. After two weeks, I finally rode without falling. I felt so proud!
From this experience, I learned that difficulties are like mountains — they look big, but if you keep climbing step by step, you will reach the top. So don’t give up easily. Believe in yourself, and you can achieve anything!
