There is a saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Although eating properly is important, being kind to others is also good for your health. Studies show that people who perform kind acts are more relaxed, happier, and healthier than other people.
In one study at Arizona State University researchers, found that many volunteers experienced a sudden feeling of joy, followed by a long period of calm, after performing a kind act. This feeling, called “a helper’s high” may actually help reduce stress as the body releases (释放) natural painkillers (止痛药).
Stress can cause serious health problems such as heart depression, and sleeping problems. However, the study found that volunteers had fewer stress-related health problems when they did helpful things for other people.
The study also found that people who did nice things for others felt better about themselves as well. They had higher self-esteem (自尊), and were happier. Many believe this is because volunteers spend more of their time with other people. People who are more outgoing are often healthier.
Another study at the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center confirmed the health benefits of volunteering. A ten-year study showed that people who volunteered live longer than those who didn’t. Although you shouldn’t need a reason to be helpful, it is nice to know that kindness may help you live longer.

When we talk about helping others, we often focus on giving material things. Yet there is another valuable form of support—sharing our time and listening. For people who feel lonely or upset, a patient listener is just like a ray of sunshine.
In many communities, there are special volunteer groups made up of teenagers. Their main work is to talk with lonely seniors and kids who feel stressed. These volunteers do not bring expensive gifts. They just sit down quietly, listen to others’ stories, and share their own feelings. Many elders say they no longer feel lonely after these talks. Some students under pressure also become relaxed and confident again.
This kind of spiritual help is easy to offer for everyone, but it needs true care and patience. You cannot be in a hurry while listening. You need to put yourself in others’ shoes and understand their feelings. What’s more, this warm connection works both ways. Volunteers also learn a lot from the stories they hear and become more thoughtful.
Small acts of company and listening have great power. They bridge the gap between people and fill daily life with warmth. We all have the ability to offer such simple but precious help to those around us.

Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. “You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason, a volunteer said.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations. Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities.
The following tips can help you if you have some of these worries.
★ Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
★ Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
★ Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
★ Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, and he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
★ Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
★ Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “… little things can change a person’s life.”

固定搭配“introduce oneself to sb.”
前文提到“I always felt upset”,后文说“It led me to believe…”,说明想法发生了转变,因此用“changed”。
“Instead of”代替,“Along with”连同,“According to”根据,均不合逻辑。

A.Giving away clothes and food. B.Listening to and talking with people in need.

Make a Difference with Small Actions
Small actions can make a big difference in daily life. We can do many little things to help others and protect the environment.
For example, we can volunteer to clean up the park or help the old cross the road. Turning off lights when leaving a room saves energy. Giving a smile to someone sad can warm their heart.
