Mike awoke to the sound of the alarm clock. Normally, this was followed by feelings of worry about the day ahead. But today was different. Today he couldn’t wait to go to school.
He rushed to his desk and picked up the old jam jar which contained a colourful butterfly. It had taken him hours to catch and now it was going to be part of his biology presentation for school.
While most of his classmates would be showing drawings of insects or animals taken from textbooks, Mike planned to present something different — a live creature. This was sure to get him the highest grade in the class.
Mike sat at his desk admiring the insect’s beautiful red and yellow wings. He had made air holes in the jar’s lid, and added leaves for the butterfly to eat. It might be in a glass prison but at least it was being well cared for, Mike thought as he left for school.
Mike entered the classroom early, and put the jar in his desk. Biology was the first lesson after lunch and he wanted his presentation to be a surprise. After taking the jar from his bag, he noticed the butterfly was very still. Its wings moved very slowly and its colour seemed to have faded too. Probably just a little tired from the trip in the bag, Mike hoped.
Throughout the morning, Mike secretly checked on the insect. Each time it seemed a little stiller, its colour a little duller. Something was wrong. When the lunch-bell rang, he waited for his classmates to leave before opening the jar. The butterfly was still alive, but only just.
He took the jar to the bathroom and sprinkled a few drops of water on the butterfly’s head. The cooling effect was instant. The butterfly came to life again and Mike barely managed to replace the lid before the butterfly flew out. But rather than pleasure, the sight of the revived butterfly crashing against the jar, desperate for freedom, made Mike feel guilty. He was being cruel for a mark.
As he walked back to class, feeling ashamed, the bell went again. It was time for Biology. He walked over to the window, opened the jar and set the butterfly free. A moment later the biology teacher entered. “Mike, your presentation’s first today.”
“Sorry sir,” the boy replied, “I forgot all about it.”

“Sorry I’m late!”
I used the power of a Cognos Bloom to climb over the vines, rushing to the classroom and Nervously pulling open the door, only to make eye contact with the person I had an appointment with. The professor, barely over thirty, was leaning casually against the stone lectern, loose and relaxed. The scholar’s robe gleamed bright in the dim light of the Evernight, giving off an almost divine aura.
“Hmm? The first class, and already late. Looks like someone is eager to meet Thanatos…” In other words, this was our first one-on-one lesson and I just totally blew it from the start. Probably even Cerces would’ve felt embarrassed looking at such a sorry scene. Luckily, I had already come up with a plan.
“Sorry, professor! I’ll do anything to make it up to you!”
“Anything?”
“Well... please, I hope you’ll be lenient.”
At these words, the professor’s face broke into a charming smile
“Then, I want you to teach me.”
“Wait, Professor…?”
“I want you to break down the points in this paper, word by word, and explain them to me slowly.” Although there was no mirror here, I could guess that my face had turned red from the sudden and direct request.
“Um, but... Professor... I’m still just a student intern. Isn’t it... a bit too... early for me to do something like this?”
“Hmph... I finally worked up the courage to say it! Do you want me to waste the lesson I prepared? You fool!”
“At least.. at least wait until after class!”
“... If that’s what you’d prefer, then fine. But don’t forget, I still haven’t forgiven you. So, what should we study first today?”
“Why don’t we peruse this academic journal? I think they recently published a paper on the patterns of natural numbers.”
“Sounds good. Come on, let’s have a look.”

The boys at the back of the school bus were restless. Stevie did his best to ignore the others. “Settled own!” Mr Taylor said. “We’ll be there soon. Wait till you see the climbing walls. You’ll be very happy.” Stevie hadn’t liked this “Boys Rulz” club from the start. They were troublemakers. Mom had made him join because she was worried that he didn’t seem to be fitting in. It was not his fault, thought Stevie, school was boring. None of the teachers trusted him, and no special boy’s group was to change that.
All the boys stared up in wonder at the huge climbing walls. Stevie looked down at his thin arms and wondered how he could climb up that. Mr Taylor and a man called Rick helped the boys get into their harnesses(保护带) and showed them how to climb up. “Now find a partner and get them to check all your straps(带子) and everything,” said Mr Taylor. The boys quickly paired off, leaving Stevie standing there alone. “Cool, you’re with me,” said Rick, holding up his hand for a high-five. Stevie high-fived him back weakly. Stevie was on a tiny wall which the others had called the “baby wall”. He gritted his teeth(咬紧牙关), his face pressed against the rough surface and reached for the next hold. “Done!” he called down from the top. “Now let go of the rock and walk down as I showed you,” said Rick. “It’s perfectly safe.” Stevie did as instructed, and Rick started to let him down slowly. “Well done,” said Rick when Stevie got to the bottom.
Then someone pointed out that Mr Taylor hadn’t done any climbing himself. “I plan to,” said Mr Taylor. “But I’ll need a partner, someone I can really trust.” The boys volunteered actively, but Mr Taylor pretended he hadn’t heard. He looked around the group. “How about you, Stevie?” he said at last. “Fancy being my belayer?” A be layer is somebody who controls how you come down, the one that stops you from falling. Stevie looked up, greatly surprised.

One early afternoon, when I finished the day’s work inside the children’s library, an editor of regional magazine called me.
Besides my job in the library, I was a part-time writer. I was so part-time that I would never have called myself a writer, even though many of my poems had been published in literary magazines across Canada. A few months ago, I noticed that this particular regional magazine occasionally published poetry, so I took a chance and sent them a letter along with some of my best poems for their consideration.
The instant I picked up the phone, the editor greeted me excitedly, “Hello Carol!I received your letter and I was wondering if you might be interested in reviewing (评论) books for us. You’ll have a month to write your review, and we do pay.”
Reviewing books? I had never written a review before, at least not the kind that would appear in a magazine with many readers. Sure, I had written short and enthusiastic summaries of books in the library to engage our users with newly acquired titles, but they were always positive assessments since I only focused on books I liked. This request was something entirely different.
Could I do it? I questioned whether I had the skills and the right to review others’ work. After all, I was only an occasional poet and library assistant. My spirits sank when they didn’t even mention my poetry; instead, they wanted me to review someone else’s writing.
“I have a novel here. It’s by a well-known author. Would you like me to send it to you?” the editor asked. Suddenly, my heart whispered, “You can do it and say ‘yes’ now!” “Yes,” I then said. The book arrived soon. I felt anxious. Again, my heart said, “Take it one step at a time. First, read the book.” So, I did. I read it carefully and discovered I enjoyed the story.
Now what? I sat at my computer, with fingers frozen. “Think! Think! Think! What are you going to say?” I whispered and remained still for several minutes.

From Code And Arm To Care And Action
In a senior high school, Mr. Hurd’s hands-on workshop was alive-robotic arms clicking and lines of code (代码) flashing on screens. Wilson sat focused at his workstation.
With steady hands, he carefully connected the final wire of the robotic arm with the remoter and uploaded his code. With the remoter, Wilson tried to control the robotic arm beside his desk. Finally, the arm came to life, smoothly picking up a small ball as planned. At the sight of it, Wilson exchanged a high-five with his classmate Peter, who made a successful attempt as well. Around them, students were rewriting the code, adjusting their robotic arms, testing their functions and celebrating their progress. Mr. Hurd wandered between the desks, offering tips and encouragement. When he reached Wilson and Peter, he nodded with a satisfied smile. “Impressive,” he said. Wilson and Peter’s faces lit up at the praise.
Seeing their proud smiles, Mr. Hurd nodded approvingly and said, “You’ve done a remarkable job with your robotic arms, but what can this arm help in real life?”
After school, lost in Mr. Hurd’s question, Wilson unconsciously took a different route home, one he hadn’t adopted for years. As he approached the lake, he froze in disbelief, shocked by what he saw. The once-clear water was now dark and polluted, with bottles and other rubbish piling up along the bank.
He couldn’t believe his eyes. The lake used to shine like silver under the morning sun, and butterflies danced above flowers while families laid out picnic blankets on the grassy banks. Wilson remembered those mornings clearly, especially the one when his grandfather said, “This lake raised us. One day, it’ll be your turn to take care of it.”
Sitting on a rock by the shore, Wilson stared at the rubbish in front of him. “How did something so beautiful end up like this? What could I do to help it?” he thought. Then, suddenly, an idea hit him.

Vivie woke up with the feeling that something special was supposed to happen. Was it Saturday, pancake day? Were her grandma Nona coming over? No, it wasn’t either of those things. After a quick breakfast, she brushed her teeth but left her hair messy and headed to her room. A shiny pink dress lay across the bed.
“Mom, is it my birthday?” she yelled.
Her mom replied, “It’s school picture day, honey!”
Vivie’s eyes widened with excitement. She pictured herself sitting in front of the giant blue screen, smiling brightly. Then, her excitement faded as her gaze landed on the pink dress her mom had picked out. She hated that dress. Her mom suggested other clothes, but none of them worked for Vivie. She didn’t want the childish teddy bear skirt. She wanted to wear herself, not someone else’s idea of pretty. So she decided to pick her own clothes.
She looked around, grabbing whatever twinkled, or made her face curve into a smile: a leopard-print T-shirt, a blue tutu(芭蕾舞短裙), orange tight pants. Her purple cowgirl boots winked at her from the corner. She grabbed Nona’s old beads, wrapping them around her waist, and slipped in a dazzling sweater.
“HURRY UP OR WE’LL BE LATE!” Her mom’s shout pierced(穿透)through the air.
Vivie added a few finishing touches and raced downstairs. She turned around and around, eyes sparkling with pride. Her mom froze, sighing, “I want you to look nice for the photo”. Vivie explained that each piece had a special meaning to her: the leopard shirt because she loved cats, the tutu for her ballerina dreams...
The car ride was thick with silence. Vivie didn’t like feeling bad in her favorite clothes. She pressed her nose against the car window, looking out. Outside, a boy caught her eye, standing out boldly. He wore a bright green cape tied around his neck and super-shiny purple shoes. It was her classmate, Joe.
When she arrived at the school, the gym was full of kids in neat clothes waiting for their turn to stand in front of the big blue screen.

I keep a two-dollar bill in my wallet that was given to me by my mother when I was six years old. I still remember the day when she pulled me into the living room and said, “You are brilliant in my mind, but if you fail once don’t give up. Don’t fear failure. It is a way of getting us to try harder. You will succeed, I promise.”
She looked at me and continued, “I want you to carry this two-dollar bill for extra good luck.”
“Thanks mom,” I replied. “I will keep it close to me always.”
I am not superstitious (迷信的), but from that day on the bill goes with me wherever I go. I firmly believe that luck would follow me everywhere.
Every morning I would get dressed and my two-dollar bill went into my pocket. My mother passed away when I was 17 years old and I remember taking out my two-dollar bill. I held it in my hand for the longest time and knew that she would be watching over me the rest of my life.
Each time I felt I had a crisis on my hands, I would reach for my two-dollar bill and set it on the table. I would stare at it for several hours and could always come up with a solution.
When I applied for my first job, I was thirty years old and very shy. The thought of being interviewed for a job was scary but I had to work. On my first interview, as I sat in the waiting room, I noticed there were five women ahead of me. All of the women were younger and very well dressed. One of them looked perfect in her blue striped suit with matching purse and shoes. I knew I was up against women better qualified by looking at the length of their resumes (简历).

Paco was my soul dog. We had been through a lot. Five years ago, he came with me to look after my granddaughter, Mia. Paco was sweet, affectionate and perfectly behaved, particularly with Mia.
Then, Paco got seriously sick. I had to put him to sleep, yet my feelings did not die with him. I missed him so much that it became unbearable. Therefore, I hid Paco’s collar (项圈), empty bed, and stuffed fox — his favorite toy — under my bed. “No more dogs,” I thought. I couldn’t bear that kind of loss again.
A week after Paco died, Mia talked me into going to the shelter to look for a new pet. “A cat,” I reminded Mia on the road.
“There aren’t any cats available right now,” the lady at the desk told us. Mia was disappointed. Suddenly, we heard “Click, click, click”. Turning to see where the noise was coming from, we found a big black dog. He was old and fat. But that didn’t stop him from dancing on his legs, his toenails tapping the glass in front of him. “Pick me”, he seemed to be saying. “Pick me”.
“Can we take him home, please?” Mia said. “I will walk him and feed him.” The dog wagged his tail, a hopeful smile on his face. I still didn’t want a dog, especially not this old, overweight dog. But I couldn’t refuse my granddaughter. “I guess I don’t mind having him,” I said. “But remember, he’s your dog. I’m not going to take care of him. You are.” “I will!” Mia promised. She named him Eddie.
Eddie was thrilled when he arrived home. He dashed around as if to say, “I’m home! I’m home!” Even I couldn’t help smiling. But I had no intention of getting attached. Eddie had other ideas. Every time I turned around, he was at my side. He found Paco’s stuffed fox and tried to play it with me. He snuggled (依偎) beside me on the sofa whenever I sat down and looked at me fondly with a familiar smile on his face. Still, in my heart he was not Paco.

“Hey Ms. Woodall!” The cheerful shout cut through the warm Saturday air. My daughter and I were walking through a sample house in the new neighborhood where she and her husband had just bought land. When I heard that voice, my heart gave a little jump of recognition.
I looked around. There, standing on the fresh earth of the yard next door, was a little figure covered in dirt, his brown hair messy. “William!” I cried out, genuinely surprised. “What on earth are you doing here?”
He patted his chest proudly. “Helping my dad put down grass!” He pointed towards the next yard, where I spotted his father, head down, working hard with a roller. William’s dad owned a gardening business.
“I bet he loves the help,” I said warmly, turning to my daughter. “This is William. One of my students. He’s...” My usual praise about his helpfulness was caught in my throat. “He’s wonderful to have in class... a hard worker,” I finished, seeing his expectant face.
In my class, William was different from others. Reading was a real struggle for him. He often forgot his homework. Numbers sometimes escaped from his head. I’d spent so many lunchtimes trying to help him catch up. My voice was patient but my stomach was often filled with worry. “Will he ever grasp this? What if he falls too far behind?”
William’s eyes lit up when we learned about insects, or birds, or how plants grew. Break time, he wasn’t on the swings; he was chasing a butterfly or watching a line of ants carry food bigger than themselves.
When spring arrived, I announced our special project: Growing Sunflowers! Each child would plant some seeds, care for them, and watch them grow. “Sunflowers follow the sun,” I explained. “They teach us about patience... and about finding the light.”
William’s hand shot up like a rocket. “Can I give them water? Every day?!” His voice was urgent, hopeful.
“Of course you can, William,” I smiled. But inside, a small, doubtful thought whispered: Is this just another distraction (干扰)?

One afternoon, my three children asked my husband and me to sit down to watch their PPT. The slides were designed to convince us that we needed a second dog. “Turtle would have a friend!” their last slide read. Turtle, our 32-pound dog, was almost 3. From his first weeks, he would stay at my side during the day. Each night, he found his place beside whichever kid needed him most.
“Okay,” my husband said after talking with me. “But,” he continued with his eyes on the kids, “you need to show us you can handle a dog by taking more responsibility for Turtle from now on.” In response, they eagerly promised to take good care of him.
To our surprise, that evening, Turtle didn’t come for dinner. We finally found him at the top of the stairs, sitting still, as if in pain. The kids’ excitement was replaced by worry. We immediately carried him to the animal hospital, where a vet (兽医) said he had a back problem and gave us some medicine.
But overnight, Turtle’s condition worsened. Back at the hospital, we learned an operation was the only option, although there was a chance that Turtle might never walk again. With a heavy heart, we decided to give it a try. Then we drove home to await the “all clear” call. Instead, with almost no warning, Turtle died, which came as a shock. Not even a day had passed since we had agreed to get a second dog.
That night, the kids crowded into our bed, crying. The next morning, I stared at Turtle’s empty water bowl and felt the house was too quiet without him. In the days that followed, our neighbor’s dog Bertie became a small comfort. My kids borrowed him to cuddle (搂抱). One night, my son asked, “Mom, could we invite a bunch of dogs over to play? Like a party in Turtle’s honor?”
I understood the desire. I’d asked to pet every dog I passed and looked forward to Bertie’s visits as much as the kids. Therefore, the idea for a celebration of life for Turtle was born.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】Possible Version 1:
The teacher noticed an empty jam jar in Mike’s hand. “What happened to your presentation, Mike?” Mr. Thompson asked, raising an eyebrow. Mike hesitated, then confessed. “I... I set the butterfly free. It wasn’t right to keep it trapped.” To his surprise, the teacher nodded. “Sometimes the best lessons aren’t about grades,” he said, “but about understanding life.”
After hearing what the teacher said, Mike could hardly believe his ears. Instead of scolding him, Mr. Thompson invited Mike to share his experience with the class. With shaky hands, Mike stood up. “I thought catching a butterfly would make my project special,” he admitted, “but watching it struggle made me realize that we shouldn’t hurt living things just to impress others.” The classroom fell silent, then burst into applause. Later, Mike wrote a new report titled “Respect Over Grades”.
Possible Version 2:
The teacher noticed the empty jar in Mike’s hand. Mike froze, his sweaty hands almost dropping it. He expected a scolding for his failed project, but the teacher smiled gently. “You set the butterfly fre e, didn’t you?” Mike nodded, his face turning red. Instead of getting angry, the teacher patted his shoulder. “This shows you understand something more important than grades,” he said. Mike’s heart pounded —this wasn’t how he imagined the conversation would go.
After hearing what the teacher said, Mike could hardly believe his ears. The teacher’s words gave Mike unexpected courage. Standing before the class, he shared his story simply: “I couldn’t hurt the butterfly for a grade.” To his surprise, classmates nodded thoughtfully. One even said, “That was brave!” Though Mike received no grade that day, he learned a real lesson about respecting life — a truth that would stay with him long after school.

【答案】The research paper was immensely valuable, but I couldn’t even grasp the basic arguments. My palms started to sweat as I flipped through the pages, the complex formulas and theories dancing before my eyes. Sensing my discomfort, the professor leaned closer, his robe brushing against my arm. “See this equation?” he murmured, pointing to a particularly daunting section. “It’s the key to understanding the entire paper. Let me walk you through it.” His voice was gentle yet authoritative, each word unlocking a piece of the puzzle. As he spoke, his eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, making the abstract concepts feel tangible. I found myself nodding along, gradually gaining confidence.
The bell signaling the Curtain-Fall Hour rang, and we looked at each other in surprise. The lesson had flown by, but I felt a strange mix of relief and disappointment. “I guess that’s it for today,” I said, gathering my things. The professor smiled, a mischievous glint in his eye. “Not so fast,” he replied. “You still owe me a lesson, remember? Meet me here tomorrow, and this time, don’t be late. I expect a full explanation of that paper.” I grinned, feeling a surge of excitement. “Yes, professor,” I said, bowing slightly. As I turned to leave, I couldn’t help but wonder what tomorrow’s lesson would bring.

He thought he’d been invisible. “I’m not so sure,” he smiled weakly. But Mr Taylor came up to him, patted him on the arm firmly and, before he could refuse, said “Let’s do it.” The boys gathered around. Then Stevie and Mr Taylor checked each other’s straps—the way they had been taught. With everything ready, Mr Taylor began to make his way up. Watching carefully as the teacher climbed, Stevie could feel his heart pounding fast and his palms sweating. Finally, Mr Taylor reached the top, and the whole place burst into cheering.
“Are you ready to let me down?” Mr Taylor asked Stevie from above. Stevie took a deep breath and reviewed what Rick had taught them about how to use the belaying device. At last, he looked up and said loudly, “OK!” Then the teacher let go of the wall and began to walk down. Stevie let the rope slip through his hands bit-by-bit cautiously and watched the teacher’s movement closely. He was so nervous that he could even hear his heart beating fast. Luckily, things went smoothly! Hearing the teacher say “You’re really trustworthy!”, Stevie smiled with relaxation and great joy.

“Just start writing down anything.” It old myself. My fingers then responded by typing a sentence then two. The words flowed from my fingertips as if they had been waiting for this moment. I found myself absorbed in the process, letting my thoughts and emotions guide my review. And soon enough, I had a complete draft before me. As I read through what I had written, a sense of accomplishment washed over me. It wasn’t perfect, but I captured the essence of the novel. With a deep breath, I hit the “send”button. Then, all I could do was wait. Meanwhile, I felt worried that it wouldn’t be accepted by the editor.
It wasn’t long before the editor replied. “Hi, Carol. I did a quick read through of your review. It looks great the editor excitedly. Upon hearing these words, all my doubts were pushed aside and replaced by newfound confidence. From that day forward, I embraced more opportunities to write reviews. It was a journey of growth and self-discovery, one that taught me the power of stepping out of my comfort zone and trusting in my own abilities. And so, my humble beginnings as an occasional poet and library assistant paved the way for a new chapter in writing journey. I’m grateful for the initial chance the editor gave me.

He described how their robotic arm could help clean the polluted lake. With excitement, Peter quickly grasped the potential. They spent every afternoon in the workshop, where they carefully adjusted the design for cleaning the lake. The arm’s fingers were reshaped to better grasp trash, while new sensors helped identify different types of waste. In the end, their creation was ready for testing.
After a month, they tested their new design near the lake. A small group of curious onlookers gathered as the robotic arm extended over the murky water. With precise movements, it successfully retrieved plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and even a submerged bicycle tire. Local residents cheered. When the arm struggled with a particularly heavy object, Wilson quickly adjusted the pressure settings, demonstrating their invention’s adaptability. As the sun set, casting golden light on the cleaner water, Mr. Hurd proudly announced, “This is what technology can do for our environment.”

Vivie felt out of place among them.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】 Paragraph 1: Vivie felt out of place among them. The girls wore matching outfits — soft pink dresses paired with white knee-high socks, their hair neatly woven into identical braids. The boys stood in crisp polo shirts, their polished shoes gleaming, and some had new haircuts. Vivie stood near the wall, her leopard-print T-shirt clashing boldly with her orange leggings. Her Nona’s old beads felt heavy now. She hadn’t even brushed her hair. A few kids glanced her way, their giggles sharp in her ears. Whispers floated around her:“Why’s she dressed like that?” Each word stung. Clutching the beads at her waist, she bit her lip, head drooping. “Am I wrong?”Maybe the pink dress would’ve been easier. Slowly, she shuffled toward the corner, her confidence slipping away.
Paragraph 2: As she tried to slip into the corner, a voice cut through the noise, “You look cool!” It was Joe, his green cape flapping as he bounded over, purple shoes glinting. Vivie’s cheeks warmed with a shy smile. “Thanks, Joe! I love your cape — it’s like a superhero’s!” Joe grinned. “I wanna be a comic book hero someday. Your outfit’s like... a jungle ballerina cowgirl!” They both giggled, and Vivie’s nerves began to melt away. A few other kids turned, their whispers turning into curious questions about where she got her clothes. Vivie beamed, explaining her outfit with growing pride — the leopard shirt for her love of cats... When Vivie’s turn came, she strode to the blue screen and sat, chin high. The photographer blinked. “Big smile!” Vivie grinned, her smile as bold as her clothes. Vivie knew she’d chosen perfectly—she was herself, and that was enough.

Paragraph 2:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Mrs. Martin, the office manager called me into her office. “What makes you feel you are qualified for this job?” she asked. “I really need this job and there is nothing I cannot do,” I responded. She asked me a series of questions and the interview was over. As I exited her office, I turned around and said, “Mrs. Martin, I know that I am not qualified like your other applicants but please give me a chance. I learn quickly and can be a very productive member of your team.” I thanked her and went home exhausted. Oh well, I thought tomorrow would be another day.
Late that afternoon, while I was cooking, the telephone rang. It was from Mrs. Martin Gina. She said, “you were not the most qualified applicant, but you have so much confidence in yourself that we decided to give you a chance to prove yourself.” I screamed out loud, jumping all over the room in disbelief. I could hear Mrs. Martin laughing in the background and suddenly I realized that Mrs. Martin was still on the line. “Thank you Mrs. Martin, you will not regret this decision,” I said and hung up the phone.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】 Eddie didn’t mind that I didn’t return his love. He seemed happy just to be with me. He even listened patiently when I told him about Paco. Later, I found him snuggling up in Paco’s bed that I’d hidden away. One evening, when I was watching TV, I held Paco’s collar in my hand for comfort. Eddie, as usual, was right beside me. He sniffed the collar and tried to bury his flat face into it, as if trying to say, “I’m your dog.”
Soon, it was hard for me to imagine a life without Eddie. Whenever I sat on the sofa to read or watch TV, it wouldn’t feel right without Eddie snuggling close, his little front legs next to mine, as if to confirm we belonged together. I grew to love his face, his energy and his company. I was grateful for every minute I had with him. Never again would I push away love because I was afraid of loss. Eddie taught me that love was fearless and asked nothing in return. I love you, Eddie. Thank you for choosing me.

On the last school day, a flash of brilliant yellow in the garden caught my eye.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Shouldn’t he be focusing on his reading? The familiar worry arose in my chest as I watched him dash towards the water pond to fetch water. Yet, each afternoon, William was the first at the garden plot, kneeling intently, dirt smudging his cheeks as he carefully measured water for his seeds. His usual classroom restlessness disappeared here, replaced by a quiet, focused determination. My doubtful whisper faded, replaced by a hesitant hope: perhaps this was the key to unlocking his potential, patience growing alongside the unseen roots.
On the last school day, a flash of brilliant yellow in the garden caught my eye. There stood William, beaming beside a sunflower taller than himself, its huge face glowing in the sunlight. “Look, Ms. Woodall!” he shouted, bouncing with pride. “Mine found the light really good!” The other children gathered, murmuring in awe. Seeing his pure joy and the magnificent result of his dedicated care, my heart swelled. This, I realized, was his kind of reading — understanding the earth, the sun, and the miracle of growth.

The kids designed invitations that read, “Come Celebrate Turtle’s Life.” They drew pictures of Turtle playing and added colorful decorations. We delivered them to friends, neighbors, and anyone who had ever met Turtle, encouraging them to bring their own pets along. On the morning of the party, we baked cookies for the guests and carefully set out dog treats and toys. The kids even arranged a photo wall showing Turtle’s happiest moments. Our yard looked wonderful, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. As the start time approached, my heart was filled with a mix of hope and anxiety.
To my surprise, 13 dogs and 40 people showed up that day. The yard was full of laughter as dogs played and the guests shared stories about their own pets. My kids excitedly joined in the play and storytelling. It was a heartwarming and comforting sight. As the celebration neared its end, I gathered everyone together and my son read a note. “Turtle was more than just a pet. He was a beloved family member,” he said emotionally. As we all stood there, united by the memory of Turtle, I realized that even in his absence, he had brought us closer and taught us the true meaning of love.
