A
Body language is a very important part of communication, but do you know the same gesture can mean different things in different countries?
Nodding your head usually means “YES”. Especially in Japan, nodding and bowing are the ways that locals show their agreement and respect. But in Bulgaria (保加利亚) and Greece, nodding up and down means “NO”.
Strong eye contact is very common in Spain, Greece and Arab (阿拉伯的) countries. However, in Finland and Japan, too much eye contact is considered rude. To avoid embarrassment, they often look at the other person’s neck or shoulders instead.
Tapping your nose means “secret” in England while it means “be careful” in Italy.
In many cultures, like Italy and the U.S., people use their arms freely when talking. However, Northern Europeans don’t like gesturing with their arms. They think it is too dramatic Similarly, in Japan, gesturing with broad arm movements is thought to be impolite.
The “thumbs up” sign is another interesting example. In the U.S., it usually means “good job” or “everything is okay”. But in some Middle-Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Iran, this gesture is very offensive. It’s like a very bad word.
Understanding these differences helps us avoid misunderstandings. When you travel or talk to someone from a different culture, pay attention to their body language. You can make a big difference in how well you communicate!
36. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Nodding one’s head means “Yes” in Greece.
B. It is polite to look at a person’s eyes when talking with him in Finland.
C. By tapping his nose, an Englishman means: “It’s between you and me.”
D. Gesturing with broad arm movements is popular in both America and Japan.
37. In which picture, the “thumbs up” gesture is not suitable?
A. B. C. D.
38. The author wrote the article to _______.
A. ask readers to use more body language
B. help readers better understand people from other cultures
C. show readers the importance of body language
D. suggest readers make a big difference in communication
B
Zhai Yuliang becomes extra busy whenever the holidays are around the corner. The Beijinger, in his 60s, has just finished a pair of palace lanterns for a courtyard home in the capital.
“The owner wants every part of them to be done in the old-fashioned way, so that they will fit perfectly with the grand style of their historical house,” says Zhai, who has practiced the craft for more than four decades. One of the most popular styles, which is also Zhai’s favorite, is the double-layered octagonal (八角形的) palace lantern. It’s full of Chinese elements, and features dragon heads and many other specific patterns.
However, he stresses the essential elements to be classified as palace lanterns—hand-painted scenes and Chinese knots (中国结) as decoration. Most importantly, they must be created using the specific techniques, which require over 100 steps.
To make a palace lantern, a single craftsman has to do everything from the woodwork to the painting. “It takes months to make a palace lantern,” Zhai says. “It requires the skills of a woodworker, the knowledge of a mechanic, an appreciation of classical architecture, poetry, painting and an additional talent for mortise-and-tenon joints (榫卯) by hand before they can create the right carvings and layer combinations.”
Zhai has received many invitations from communities and institutes to show the charm of palace lanterns. He particularly enjoys hosting workshops where he teaches people to make lanterns themselves. He is enchanted to see the smiles of children and the expressions of adults when they complete their works under his guidance.
He believes his lifelong devotion to this craft has been worthwhile. His lanterns can be seen in such locations as the Tian’anmen Square and many overseas sites that promote friendship with China.
“Wherever you are, when you see a palace lantern, you know there’s a connection to China,” Zhai says.
39. What is a must for a palace lantern?
A. A dragon head in grand style. B. Application of over 100 techniques.
C. Hand-painted scenes and Chinese knots. D. A double-layered octagonal pattern.
40. Which of the following best describes the process of making a palace lantern?
A. Boring. B. Efficient. C. Creative. D. Challenging.
41. The underlined word “enchanted” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. surprised B. confused C. pleased D. stressed
42. Which statement about palace lanterns may Zhai Yuliang agree with?
A. They bring him fame and fortune. B. They act as a cultural link to China.
C. They’re well preserved in overseas locations. D. They connect him with many other craftsmen.
C
The number of monarch butterflies spending the winter in the western United States has fallen to its second-lowest level in nearly 30 years, according to a recent survey. Pesticides (农药), habitat loss and climate change are threatening this beloved pollinator (传粉昆虫), known for its striking orange-and-black wings.
The survey, conducted by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, began in 1997. It tracked monarch populations along the California coast, northern Baja California, and inland sites in California and Arizona. In 2024, only 9,119 monarchs were counted, a 96% decrease from 233,394 in 2023. This is the second-lowest number since the survey started, with the record low being 1,901 monarchs in 2020. For example, a site in Santa Barbara that hosted 33, 200 monarchs last winter saw only 198 this year.
Monarchs face multiple threats, including the disappearance of milkweed, the plant essential for their youngsters. Drought, wildfires, agriculture, and urban development have reduced milkweed availability, while pesticides have poisoned much of what remains. Additionally, extreme heat in 2023 may have harmed the butterflies. Temperatures above 37.7℃ slow monarch breeding (繁殖), and anything above 42.2℃ is lethal. Last summer, parts of the western US experienced record-breaking heat, with Palm Springs reaching 51.1℃ in July.
Despite the alarming decline, there is hope. Monarch populations had recovered before. After hitting a low of 1,901 in 2020, the number increased to 247,246 in 2021. Emma Pelton, an endangered species biologist with the Xerces Society, emphasized that while the 2024 drop is concerning, it serves as a wake-up call to protect these insects.
Efforts are underway to safeguard monarchs. In December 2024, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing monarchs as a threatened species, which would protect their habitats and restrict harmful activities. A public comment period on the proposal ends in March, with a decision expected by December. Additionally, environmental groups like Earthjustice are pushing for stricter regulations on pesticides to protect monarchs and other pollinators.
In summary, the dramatic decline in monarch butterfly populations highlights the urgent need for conservation efforts to address habitat loss, climate change and pesticide use. With united action, there is still hope to save these iconic insects.
43. What do the figures in paragraph 2 suggest?
A. The consistent breeding conditions. B. A severe drop in monarch populations.
C. The success of wildlife regulations. D. A failure in conservation measures.
44. What are the factors leading to the reduction of milkweed?
①drought ②wildfires
③agriculture and urban development ④extreme heat
A. ①②④ B. ②③④ C. ①②③ D. ①②③④
45. What specific action is Earthjustice advocating to protect monarch butterflies?
A. Tougher regulations on pesticide usage. B. Relocating monarchs to cooler climates.
C. Funding for urban milkweed plantations. D. Restricting agricultural expansion in California.
46. What can be inferred about monarch butterflies?
A. They’ll recover quickly on their own. B. Milkweed will be sufficient for them.
C. They’ll keep decreasing without efforts. D. habitat loss isn’t a major issue for them.
D
Can science fiction tell us about the future? Setting aside aliens and spaceships, much contemporary science fiction is concerned with themes such as the impact of artificial intelligence, the danger of ecological collapse and the misuse of corporate power. In all these cases, science fiction writers are taking advantage of the freedom that this type of writing gives them to think about ongoing concerns and picture what they might lead to in the future, coming to surprising and thought-provoking conclusions.
All of those do have some predictive value. It means science fiction can play a useful role as a way to predict technological, social and political trends— but in the near term, not the distant future in which it is often set. This is the first of three ways in which science fiction can give us a glimpse of the future.
The second is that it can help broaden the mind when assessing future scenarios (设想) for planning purposes, both in government and in business. France’s Defence Innovation Agency is setting up a “red team” of sci-fi writers to propose scenarios that might not have occurred to military planners. Arup, an engineering firm, commissioned Tim Maughan, a science-fiction writer, to create four scenarios of what everyday life might look like as a result of climate change. Tech giants including Google, Microsoft and Apple have also employed sci-fi writers as consultants, using a process sometimes called “design fiction.”
And then the third one is more direct: by inspiring people in the tech industry who want to make these fictions a reality. The creation of the mobile phone at Motorola was motivated by the handheld wireless communicators from Star Trek, and Amazon’s Alexa voice-assistant by the talking computer on the Enterprise. The Kindle was inspired by an electronic-book device in Neal Stephenson’s novel The Diamond Age, and an entire industry is trying to bring to life the virtual world he described in Snow Crash. The future technology leaders are certainly reading science fiction today.
47. What does the author think of science fiction?
A. It focuses mainly on aliens and spaceships.
B. It explores current issues to imagine the future.
C. It addresses the contemporary existing problems.
D. It aims to predict technological progress in the future.
48. Why do the government and the business hire sci-fi writers?
A. To give support to their creations. B. To better understand science fiction.
C. To benefit from their expansive imagination. D. To enhance their influence and commercial value.
49. How does the last paragraph show the impact of science fiction?
A. By listing main points. B. By giving examples
C. By analyzing causes. D. By explaining a concept.
50. What is the main idea about the text?
A. Why is science fiction gaining popularity?
B. Science fiction provides insights into the future.
C. How does science fiction broaden people’s vision?
D. Science fiction serves as an inspiration for inventions.

A. collect B. collected C. to collect D. collecting
2. —Driving less and walking more is good for our health.

根据分析句子“So I prefer…an hour’s walk to work rather than…a car.” 故选A。

根据“the traditional things”可知,它们应该是被重视的对象,所以应该用被动语态“be+过去分词”,设空处前有should,所以是“should be done”。故选D。
5. —You don’t know how hard it is ___________ these two tickets.

help sb. (to) do sth.
“Since joining the force in October 2023, Bo...some amazing things.”
空后为“a cold afternoon in January 2024”,具体到某一天的下午,介词应用on。
“not only for Bo’s achievements...for the dedication”表明,not only…but (also)… 故填but。

A
Body language is a very important part of communication, but do you know the same gesture can mean different things in different countries?

A. Nodding one’s head means “Yes” in Greece.

C. By tapping his nose, an Englishman means: “It’s between you and me.”
D. Gesturing with broad arm movements is popular in both America and Japan.

B 44. C 45. A 46. C
