It’s important to teach your children good manners. Teaching good manners should begin long before they know how to walk or talk. In life, you have to set a good example for them.
But how do we teach them good manners? There is a good book, How to Behave and Why by Munro Leaf. I read it with my first grade students and we love the book. It tells good manners that every child should know. The words in the book are not difficult and there are pictures in it. They make the book easy to comprehend.
In daily life, before children are going to school or a friend’s house, tell them the importance of good manners. In your family, you can make a list of family manners. This helps children learn good manners. And you can have a manners match. It makes learning manners more interesting.
What are good manners for children? At school, they should respect teachers and other classmates. They should be quiet in class and listen to their teachers. And they should say “hello” or “goodbye” to teachers and classmates, and “thank you” when they get help from others. Good table manners are important too. For example, teach your children not to talk with their mouths full. Tell them that old people should eat first. Teach your children not to be late for classes, parties, meetings and so on.
In fact, good manners will help your children a lot in their daily life. So teach them to your children and learn with your children.

D
People drive in all countries, but the rules can be quite different. For this reason, you should always learn the laws before you decide to drive in a foreign country.
In the US, people in Alaska may have a learner’s permit (实习驾照) at the age of fourteen. This is quite different from the driving laws of Niger. There a person must be at least twenty-three years old to drive. If you want to know how old you need to be to drive in most countries, the answer is eighteen. It may also surprise you to learn that not every country allows women to drive, although most of the countries do.
Driving on the right or left side of the road is also different. In Great Britain, Cyprus, Australia, India and Malaysia, people drive on the left. However, in the US, Mexico, France and Canada, people must drive on the right. In fact, one country can have different driving rules for different areas. People in Hong Kong drive on the left, while drivers in other parts of China use the right side of the road.
Other different driving laws between countries include those about using mobile phones. In Japan, using any kind of mobile phones when driving is illegal (非法的), even if you don’t need to hold the phone with your hands. However, in Argentina and Australia, drivers can talk on their mobile phones if they do not use their hands to hold the phone.
You might also find it interesting to learn that some countries have very unusual laws. For example, in Cyprus, it is illegal to eat or drink anything while driving.
12. Why should people learn driving laws before driving in a foreign country?
A. It’s a popular hobby. B. To get a license quickly.
C. Others will laugh at them. D. Rules can be quite different.
13. How old do you need to be to drive in most countries?
A. 14. B. 18. C. 20. D. 23.
14. What does the underlined word “allows” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Stops. B. Believes. C. Agrees. D. Encourages.
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Different Driving Rules B. Driving Ages Around the World
C. Left or Right: Driving Directions D. Mobile Phone Use While Driving
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

【14题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词上文主要介绍的是在不同国家和地区允许人们驾驶的法定年龄,由此可知划线词所在句子表达的是允许人们驾驶的法定性别,即“It may also surprise you to learn that not every country allows women to drive, although most of the countries do.”意为“得知并非每个国家都允许女性开车,你可能会感到惊讶,尽管大多数国家是这样做的”,allows此处指的是“允许、同意”在四个选项中与Agrees(同意、准许)意思最相近。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“People drive in all countries, but the rules can be quite different. For this reason, you should always learn the laws before you decide to drive in a foreign country.(各国的驾驶规则都不同,因此在决定前往国外驾驶之前,务必先了解当地的交通法规)”以及随后第二至五段分别从法定驾驶年龄、靠左或靠右行驶、开车时使用手机的规定以及其他特殊规定(如开车时吃喝)等方面,举例说明了不同国家各不相同的驾驶规则。因此,“Different Driving Rules(不同的驾驶规则)”最适合作为文章标题。

第二节:读后续写
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this? The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.”
After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?” At this time, some expression of anger was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?”
A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page: Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my innocent son.
Paragraph 1:
After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears and began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling irritation while his father asked him the same question just 4 times! The son thought to himself: If I attain old age, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding?
Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said aloud, “I promise to make you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money so that I could afford to go to university. I will serve you in the best way.”
①开始:began/started/initiate

In Russia, if you give flowers as presents, you have to give an odd number of them (one, three, five, etc.) because even numbers of flowers are for funerals.
In Germany, if you are invited to dinner, flowers are good presents to take to your dinner hostess (女主人), but don’t take her red roses because it means you are in love with her. Don’t take thirteen of anything because it’s an unlucky number. Don’t take an even number of anything, either. Don’t wrap your presents in white, brown, or black paper.

8. According to Paragraph 1, who may be the text for?
A. Friends. B. Parents. C. Teachers. D. Students.

C. How to teach children good manners.
D. Why good manners are important.

A. Helpful. B. Creative. C. Painful. D. Boring.
