The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports enthusiast, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. Come fall, our backyard football games began with passing practice.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games, accelerating (加速) my competitive fever. However, in girls’ sports games at my school, I was no star. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. School sports did not bleed into the weekends, as they do today, but at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare funds to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation evolved (演变) in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered essential even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.
4. What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Responsibility B. Panic C. Shame D. Desire
5. What did the author owe her victory in the Softball Throw event to?
A. Her advanced sports outfits.
B. Her confidence in her sports ability.
C. The sports talent passed down from her father.
D. The example and training offered by her father.
6. What happened after the author stepped into adulthood?
A. She generally exercised on weekends. B. She joined Royal Canadian Air Force.
C. She preferred reading to exercising. D. She kept her love for sports.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?
A. To describe how her father built her interest in sports.
B. To recall her childhood memories about sports.
C. To express her passion for sports and fitness.
D. To stress the benefits of physical exercise.

Since graduating from middle school, this year's new 9th-grade class is adapting to (适应) the challenges of high school, a difficult process (过程) for many students. Some of the challenges the students must get used to are the increasing difficulty of schoolwork, the amount of homework, and the change in the grading system among other things.
“It's a bit harder than middle school, but that is to be expected from every ongoing year,” David Palacios, 9th-grade student, said.
Adaptation is also influenced by stories the freshmen hear before entering. These stories create a negative (消极的) idea of high school, as they are usually bad stories about classes, teachers, or other topics.
“Stories I've heard of high school are exaggerated (夸张的),” Palacios said.
The school is fighting against student fear by providing information about high school, even before they enter. This year, the 9th-grade class entered school on August 8, one day earlier than other high school students. This was done to help the freshmen by solving any doubts they could have.
“In general, they adapt well, because since middle school they have been given some information on what high school is,” Ana Isabel Garcia, high school advisor, said.
The changes faced in 9th grade are more challenging than those found in middle school. However, after experiencing the first two months of 9th grade, many 9th graders agree that 9th grade is not as hard as they thought it would be.
“It's not that different from middle school,” Palacios said.
High school is harder than other grades as it's the final step students take before they enter the real world. Students must see the important role high school plays as it teaches them many skills that will help them improve their future.
“They do well because they come in with a good attitude (态度) and wish to adapt well,” Garcia said.
8. What did Palacios think of the freshman challenges?
A. They happened as expected.
B. They were hard to fight off.
C. They would disappear soon.
D. They mostly focused on grades.
9. Why did Palacios' school require the 9th graders to enter the school on August 8?
A. To show them around the campus.
B. To help them deal with their nervousness.
C. To let them experience high school life in advance.
D. To avoid them hearing bad stories about high school.
10. What kind of feeling did Garcia express in her words?
A. Shock. B. Worry. C. Annoy. D. Satisfaction.
11. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A personal diary. B. A travel guide.
C. A news report. D. A letter.
D
Group exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve physical fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Group exercise is challenging, yet fun and empowering! Of course everyone knows that exercise is good for the body. However, studies have shown that when exercise is performed in groups, it’s not only great for improving physical health but for psychological health. It’s an opportunity to be social, release endorphins(内啡肽), and improve your strength. Additionally, group exercise creates a community feel and the shared common goal motivates participants to work hard. The instrumental support of taking on a fitness journey with others proves more effective than going to the gym alone.
Another beneficial aspect of group exercise is the informational support participants receive from the instructor. Many people fear the gym because they feel lost and don’t want to embarrass themselves. If you feel you can relate, then group training is an even better option for you. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about fitness through the clear instruction and supervision of a fitness instructor. If you’re tired of wandering around the gym wasting time and becoming bored, you can attend a cheerful group fitness class that’ll keep your workout on track. Don’t let fitness frighten you!
If you’re serious about wanting to live a healthy lifestyle, it’s extremely important to surround yourself with people who’ll provide you with the proper emotional support. I wouldn’t scold anyone for deciding to party on weekends and in turn I wouldn’t expect anyone to give offence to me for focusing on my health. Surround yourself with people who uplift, encourage and understand you! Make fitness even more fun by trying something new or any group fitness class, with a friend. Plan to go for a jog together. Then try a fun healthy restaurant or fresh juice bar! Fitness can be both fun and social!
Surrounding yourself with people who’ll provide you with respect and support can be very beneficial while working towards reaching health and fitness goals. First, decide to do it for yourself and work towards staying positive. Then make sure the people you surround yourself with are supportive. Don’t let negativity ruin your motivation.
12. What does the author want to emphasize in the first paragraph
A. An effective way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
B. A community feel created by exercising in groups.
C. The importance of improving one’s physical fitness.
D. The contribution of group exercise to physiological health.
13. What is the informative support from the instructor in Paragraph 2?
A. Guidance. B. Fright. C. Tiredness. D. Negativity.
14. What does the author think matter most in offering emotional support?
A. Having a colorful lifestyle. B. Trying a fun healthy restaurant regularly.
C. Partying on weekends with positive friends. D. Surrounding yourself with supportive people.
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Improving Your Fitness B. Supporting Health C. Building Up Strength D. Seeking Support

D. A letter.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段的“In general, they adapt well, because since middle school they have been given some information on what high school is(总的来说,他们适应得很好,因为从中学开始,他们就被告知一些关于高中的信息)”和最后一段的“They do well because they come in with a good attitude (态度) and wish to adapt well(他们做得很好,因为他们带着良好的态度来,希望能很好地适应)”可以推出,Garcia在她的话里表达了一种满意的感觉,故选D。
【11题详解】
