Norman Lear, a genius producer and screenwriter, passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 101. “Lear’s hit comedy shows changed television forever,” said Darnel Hunt, a leading artist on TV.
Lear grew up in an ordinary family in Connecticut, where an unexpected accident brought about his father’s business collapse. So he had to drop out of college and joined the army. In his late 20s, he moved to Los Angeles where he struggled hard for several years, selling furniture door to door. Later on, unsatisfied with his life, he eventually turned to writing for a nightclub comedy act.
By 1971, when he was almost 50, Lear had produced and directed some shows, among which was the hit show All in the Family. In the beginning, it didn’t get on the air smoothly. However, once it did, this show made it to the top 10 for eight of its nine seasons, promising Lear’s life was to change.
This successful show was just the beginning of Lear’s dominating position in comedy shows. Then came The Jeffersons, about a family on its way up. It ran for eleven seasons, one of the longest running comedy shows on television, becoming another successful story. When interviewed about the hit of his shows, Lear said, “Our team read two or three newspapers a day, paid a lot of attention to our families, and came in to talk about everything that was affecting us in our daily lives.” Therefore, it came as no surprise that viewers had a sense of Lear’s own family after watching All in the Family.
“Routinely, Lear’s shows might get fifty or sixty million viewers. He was in direct contact with the living rooms and families of the country,” says Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center. “Lear did everything with humor and sympathy.”
4. What can we learn about Lear from the first two paragraphs?
A. He led a challenging life in his twenties.
B. His shows had little impact on television.
C. His father expected him to be a screenwriter.
D. He received good education despite his father’s business failure.
5. Which factor may contribute to the success of Lear’s shows?
A. His shows reflected real daily life. B. His shows featured surprise endings.
C. His shows go on the air immediately. D. His shows dominated the comedy industry.
6. What can we infer from Marty Kaplan’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Lear promoted his shows to families directly.
B. Lear won widespread popularity for his shows.
C. Lear carried out face-to-face interactions with viewers.
D. Lear always focuses on the themes of humor and sympathy.
7. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A comedy script. B. A story collection.
C. A literature review. D. A news report.
A 5. A 6. B 7. D

Have you ever spent a couple of hundred on a video game like Fortnite, where the outfit (服装) you buy is only in the virtual world to be worn by your virtual character? If so, then you can make sense of a new trend in the fashion scene (时尚界的新潮流): The rise of virtual clothing.
For many, the idea of buying virtual clothes is hard to accept. But more and more digital fashion stores are entering into a growing market — not actual clothes but digital outfits that stores just photoshop onto a customer’s photos or videos to be posted onto Instagram and elsewhere. Soon they are likely to become a way to dress your avatar when communicating in online games and meeting places, all maybe while staying in sweat pants at your own home.
27-year-old British influencer Daniella Loftus sees so much potential (潜力) that last month she gave up her job with a fashion consultancy to spend all her time on her website, This Outfit Does Not Exist. Her Instagram shows the potential of virtual clothing.
Isabelle Boemeke, a Brazilian model and influencer, is already a buyer of digital outfits. Online, she is known as Isodope. She is crazy about virtual clothing. “I wanted to do something very eye-catching. If my videos featured me wearing a T-shirt and jeans, they wouldn’t have the same attraction,” Boemeke said. “I do not have much social ability and I love expressing myself in different ways through virtual clothing.”
That’s the demand (需求), so the supply is coming fast. Outfits on digital fashion store DRESSX range from $25 hats to strange jellyfish-like dresses for hundreds of dollars. “Every brand (品牌) in the future will be on board with digital fashion,” said DRESSX co-founder Daria Shapovalova. Its own research said 15% of customers were doing so for Instagram posts, and almost a quarter found it satisfied their need for new clothing.
8. The main purpose of paragraph 2 is to .
A. introduce the growth of digital fashion B. stress the importance of the virtual world
C. explain why virtual clothes are easy to make D. discuss whether it is necessary to dress avatars
9. What did Daniella Loftus do?
A. She quit her part-time job. B. She gave up her online avatars.
C. She started to work in a new field. D. She followed her dream as a buyer.
10. How did Isabelle Boemeke feel about virtual clothing?
A. It would be the same as any other daily outfit. B. It was expressive and attractive.
C. It was creative and expensive. D. It would soon be out of date.
11. What does the author want to say about digital fashion in the last paragraph?
A. It will be as popular as traditional fashion. B. It has been greatly accepted by the public.
C. It hardly meets people’s present needs. D. It has a big potential market.
A 9. C 10. B 11. D

The growing digital divide, the gap between those with access to advanced technological tools and those without, has increasingly become a main point of discussions. In today’s digital world, this widening disparity leads to significant disadvantages for poor communities, especially in terms of educational opportunities.
While some argue that the rise of online learning platforms has popularized education by offering a great amount of resources to anyone with an Internet connection, others believe this expansion often overlooks the fundamental barriers that prevent many people from using these technologies. The digital divide is not just about the existence of online platforms, it also concerns access to reliable Internet, appropriate devices, and technical support, all of which are necessary for effective learning.
As a result, students in low-income areas, particularly those in rural or underdeveloped regions, find themselves at a distinct disadvantage. They face challenges such as difficulties in accessing learning materials, participating in virtual classrooms, and even developing basic technological skills. These barriers not only block their academic progress but also limit their future opportunities in an increasingly digital economy.
Although some view digital divide as a temporary issue that can be solved through hardware improvements and increased Internet accessibility, the problem is more complex. Without targeted efforts to fix both the availability of technology and the development of essential digital skills, the gap is likely to continue. Guaranteeing fair access to both the tools and the knowledge needed to use them effectively is crucial to bridging this divide and promoting fairness in education.
The digital divide presents a significant challenge to educational fairness. Fixing it requires a complete approach that goes beyond simply increasing Internet access, focusing also on building the necessary facilities and skills to make sure that all students, regardless of their background, can achieve success in the digital age.
12. What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Difference. B. Difficulty.
C. Disadvantage. D. Distribution.
13. What does the author think causes the digital divide?
A. People’s low digital skills. B. Inequality in accessing technology.
C. Lacking basic learning hardware in poor areas. D. Lack of interest in digital technology.
14. What will be the result of not accessing reliable Internet?
A. Slow academic advancement. B. Damage of educational fairness.
C. Unstable digital economy in future. D. Preference for traditional classroom settings.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Disadvantages of Modern Online Education.
B. Understanding and Solving the Digital Divide in Education.
C. How to improve Stidents’ Basic Learning Skills.
D. Why Poor Areas Need More School Facilities.
A 13. B 14. A 15. B
根据第一段“The growing digital divide, the gap between those with access to advanced technological tools and those without, has increasingly become a main point of discussions. (日益扩大的数字鸿沟——拥有先进技术工具的人和没有这些工具的人之间的差距——越来越成为讨论的焦点)”及“In today’s digital world, this widening disparity leads to significant disadvantages for poor communities (在当今的数字世界里,这种不断扩大的____给贫困群体带来了巨大的不利影响)”可知,this widening disparity指的是前句的The growing digital divide,因此划线词disparity与Difference意义相近。
根据第二段“The digital divide is not just about the existence of online platforms, it also concerns access to reliable Internet, appropriate devices, and technical support, all of which are necessary for effective learning. (数字鸿沟不仅涉及在线平台的存在,还关乎可靠互联网接入、合适设备以及技术支持,而所有这些因素对于有效的学习都是必不可少的)”和第三段中“As a result, students in low-income areas, particularly those in rural or underdeveloped regions, find themselves at a distinct disadvantage. They face challenges such as difficulties in accessing learning materials, participating in virtual classrooms, and even developing basic technological skills. (因此,低收入地区的学生,特别是农村或欠发达地区的学生,发现自己处于明显的劣势。他们面临着诸如获取学习材料、参与虚拟教室、甚至发展基本技术技能等方面的困难)”可知,作者认为不能平等地获取技术导致了数字鸿沟。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“These barriers not only block their academic progress but also limit their future opportunities in an increasingly digital economy.

Tricks To Becoming A Patient Person
Here’s a riddle: What do traffic jams, long lines and waiting for a vacation to start all have in common? There is one answer. ___16___.
In the Digital Age, we’re used to having what we need immediately and right at our fingertips. However, research suggests that if we practiced patience, we’d be a whole lot better off. Here are several tricks.
●Practice gratitude (感激)
Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: Research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic. ___17___. “Showing thankfulness can foster self-control,” said Ye Li, researcher at the University of California.
● Make yourself wait
Instant gratification (满足) may seem like the most “feel good” option at the time, but psychology research suggests waiting for things actually makes us happier in the long run. And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practice. ___18___. Put off watching your favorite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. You’ll soon find that the more patience you practice, the more you start to apply it to other, more annoying situations.
● ___19___.
So many of us have the belief that being comfortable is the only state we will tolerate, and when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances. You should learn to say to yourself, “___20___.” You’ll then gradually become more patient.
A. Find your causes
B. Start with small tasks
C. Accept the uncomfortable
D. All this adds up to a state of hurry
E. It can also help us practice more patience
F. This is merely uncomfortable, not intolerable
G. They’re all situations where we could use a little extra patience
G 17. E 18. B 19. C 20. F

根据上文“And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practice. (我们养成等待习惯的唯一方法就是练习)”以及后文“Put off watching your favorite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. (把你最喜欢的节目推迟到周末再看,或者多等10分钟再去吃蛋糕)”可知,后文列举的事情都是日常的小事,说明要从小事开始练习等待,故B选项“从小任务开始”符合语境,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据本段内容“So many of us have the belief that being comfortable is the only state we will tolerate, and when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances. (我们中的许多人都认为舒适是我们唯一能容忍的状态,当我们经历舒适区之外的事情时,我们会对环境失去耐心)”可知,本段提到了舒适是我们唯一能容忍的状态,结合前文的小标题都是祈使句可知,本段的主旨与接受不舒适相关,C选项中uncomfortable对应后文comfortable。故C选项“接受不舒服”符合语境,故选C。
【20题详解】
根据上文“You should learn to say to yourself (你应该学会对自己说……)”以及后文“You’ll then gradually become more patient. (然后你会逐渐变得更有耐心)”结合本段主要说明的是不舒服的状态,可知,本句为对自己所说的话与接受不舒服相关,故F选项“这仅仅是不舒服,而不是无法忍受”符合语境,故选F。

C
