You might have thought that the world’s longest-serving lifeguard would be found on a sunny beach in California or Australia. But on a rainy British spring day, the Guinness World Records people held a ceremony in Bournemouth to award local lifeguard Chris Lewis the title. Lewis, 74, began working at the Dorset spot when he was 16, meaning he has been coming to the aid of users of the sandy beaches here for 58 years. “It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “You’re working on the beach, which I love, and you’re helping people. What could be better?”
Lewis said friends used to rib (逗弄) him that his colleagues in Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were half his age. “Now they say they’re a third my age,” he said. But he is still fighting fit. RNLI lifeguards must complete a 400-metre pool swim in under 7.5 minutes. They have to do a 25-metre pool swim underwater and a 25-metre surface swim continuously in under 50 seconds. And run 200 metres along the beach in under 40 seconds. The swimming fitness tests are still reasonably easy for Lewis. All winter he has been doing 3,000 metres of sea swimming each month with no wetsuit.
Lewis had ever suffered anxiety and depression. But he believes his training and the time spent on the beach relieved this. He now helps to train young lifeguards. Over the years, he has performed hundreds of rescues. He says giving advice that prevents people getting into trouble is preferable to carrying out exciting rescues. “I would love to go through the whole of summer without having to rescue anybody.”
4. Why does Lewis consider his job the best?
A. It enables him to get an award. B. It matches his interests and values.
C. It allows him to work at an old age. D. It wins him the beachgoers’ respect.
5. What is the purpose of the figures mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show Lewis’ physical fitness. B. To analyze lifeguards’ safety risks.
C. To measure Lewis’ performance. D. To stress the training requirements.
6. What can we learn from Lewis’ words in the last paragraph?
A. Good advice sells for nothing. B. It’s never too late to rescue people.
C. Prevention is better than cure. D. Actions speak louder than words.
7. Which of the following best describes Lewis?
A. Devoted and creative. B. Knowledgeable and brave.
C. Kind and determined. D. Emotional and adventurous.

One day in elementary school, a friend asked me “What are you eating?” as she glanced at my lunchbox. “It smells,” she said, nose crinkled.
I was eating bhindi roti, my favorite Indian snack, which my mom had packed for me. But feeling embarrassed for having a “smelly” lunch and wanting to fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbox. That day, I went hungry.
Most days after that, lunchtime at school felt like a battle. If I wasn’t trying to hide my lunch or sneak quick bites when no one was looking, I’d insist on bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the other kids. My mom, who didn’t grow up eating American food, tried her best, but the sandwiches never looked, or tasted, as good as the food I devoured(津津有味地吃) at home.
I didn’t know that I wasn’t alone. Many kids with immigrant parents encounter(遭遇) what’s known as “the lunchbox moment” at school: the experience of being judged for bringing in food considered culturally different and so being made to feel like an outsider.
For this article, I talked with kids who could relate. But they also surprised me:They dealt with “the lunchbox moment” differently than I did. For example, Satya Singh, 6, who takes her mom’s Indian cooking to lunch most days, told me that one day a classmate said that her aloo, or potatoes, looked like poop. Another time, someone said that the dal, or lentils, looked like “throw up”. The next day, Satya brought enough dal to share with her entire class — and they loved it. From then on, she says, “My teacher at school made a rule: Don’t yuck someone’s yum.”
Looking back, I wish I’d had the wisdom of Satya and offered my friend a bite of my lunch, or just told her it was delicious — especially because now, as an adult, I see that Indian food is universally loved by my friends. Some even try to cook Indian lentils or chickpeas at home! And when I’m hungry, guess what? I miss my mom’s bhindi roti and her care in making it for me. Food is an expression of culture, tradition, family and love. And that’s something to celebrate, not hide.
8. Why did the writer go hungry one day in elementary school?
A. She didn’t like her smelly lunch. B. Her classmates ate up her bhindi roti.
C. Her mom didn’t prepare lunch for her. D. She skipped her lunch to fit in with others.
9. What can we infer about the writer according to the passage?
A. She enjoyed the lunchtime at school.
B. Her parents are immigrants from India.
C. She liked peanut- butter-and-jelly sandwich best.
D. She would bite her bhindi roti quickly when someone was looking.
10. How did Satya deal with “the lunchbox moment”?
A. She threw away her lunch box.
B. She asked her teacher to make a rule.
C. She ate American food instead of her mom’s Indian cooking.
D. She brought more Indian cooking to share with her classmates.
11. What does the author want to tell us?
A. Food is something to celebrate, not hide.
B. Never should you yuck someone’s yum in any case.
C. Indian food is delicious and universally appreciated.
D. The lunchbox moment is when one can taste different foods.

Researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system to help historians renovate the writings and identify when and where they were written.
Many ancient populations used writings, also known as inscriptions (碑文), to document different parts of their lives. The inscriptions have been found on materials such as rock, ceramic (陶瓷) and metal. The writings often contained valuable information about how ancient people lived and how they structured their societies. But in many cases, the objects containing such inscriptions have been damaged over the centuries. This left major parts of the inscriptions missing and difficult to identify and understand. In addition, many of the inscribed objects were moved from areas where they were first created. This makes it difficult for scientists to discover when and where the writings were made.
The new AI-based method serves as a technological tool to help researchers repair missing inscriptions and estimate (估算) the true origins of the records. The researchers, led by Alphabet's AI company DeepMind, call their tool Ithaca. The team said it trained Ithaca on the largest collection of data containing Greek inscriptions. Feeding this data into the system is designed to help the tool use past writings to predict missing letters and words in damaged inscriptions. The researchers reported that in experiments with damaged writings, Ithaca was able to correctly predict missing inscription elements 62 percent of the time. In addition, the tool was 71 percent correct in identifying where the inscriptions first came from. And, the system was able to effectively date writings to within 30 years.
When historians work on their own, the success rate for restoring damaged inscriptions is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent. The team is currently working on other versions of Ithaca trained on other ancient languages. DeepMind has launched (发行) a free, interactive tool based on the system for use by researchers, educators, museum workers and the public.
12. Which can replace the underlined word “renovate” in paragraph 1?
A. Adopt. B. Recover. C. Collect. D. Translate.
13. Which reason for the ancient inscriptions' being hard to recognize is mentioned?
A. The wars in the past. B. The development of industry.
C. The objects' being damaged. D. The extinction of language.
14. What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?
A. Ithaca currently recognizes only English.
B. Ithaca has great market development potential.
C. Ithaca can completely replace historians in the future.
D. Ithaca cannot bring any profit to its development company.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Shortcut to Ancient Inscriptions
B. Who Will Be the Historians' Right-Hand Man?
C. The Mysterious Contents of Ancient Languages
D. AI Used to Fill in Missing Words in Ancient Writings

On an Arctic island, an enormous vault(保险库)has been built deep underground. Like any bank vault, it holds treasures. ____16____ This vault holds seeds from food crops around the world.
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is in Norway. It is a seed bank, a place to store and protect seeds. More than 800 thousand different seed samples rest here. All are dried and kept in temperature- and moisture-controlled conditions. ____17____
Many nations have their own seed banks, too. One main purpose is to make sure that even if crops fail, there will still be seeds for farmers to plant.
____18____ Loss of diversity can cause problems. That was made clear in Ireland in the 1840s. People grew and ate just one kind of potato, which had no defense when a disease struck. The potato crops failed, and one million people died as a result.
Seeds hold information for scientists. ____19____They might grow into plants that can resist pests and disease. They might grow where other plants can't. Even the seeds of an invasive plant like kudzu are saved in seed banks. Perhaps scientists will find out their use someday.
A nation commonly has more than one seed bank. Still, a backup plan is a good idea. Floods, fires, war, and other disasters can destroy storehouses of precious seeds. ____20____The seeds come from all over the world, and they belong to everyone, not just one nation.
A. But you won't find precious jewels or metals here.
B. That's why the Svalbard Global Seed Vault was created.
C. Another main purpose of seed banks is to protect diversity.
D. The seeds of plants that are no longer farmed may be useful.
E. They will still have seeds to plant, crops to grow, and food to eat.
F. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is nicknamed the Doomsday Vault.
G. This means the air in the vault stays dry and the temperature is always the same.

第二节 读后续写 (满分15分)
54. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus!” she shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it.”That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.
“Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma?” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money, ”she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that tendollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs pollock’s Grade Two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess (课间休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.“Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

【答案】Dear Tony,
How is everything going? I’m writing to share with you the school reading festival themed Embrace Classics, Embody Virtues.
I read The Analects at the activity. It records wise words of Confucius, telling us virtues like being honest and respecting elders. What impresses me most is the idea of treating others kindly.
This classic lets me better understand traditional Chinese virtues. I really want to send you a copy so you can feel its charm.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, and then she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, and dashed for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and then Grandma and I hid in the car.
Paragraph 2:
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open and finally it opened. Out went Bobby Decker. Seeing the coat in the bag, he looked very astonished and then called his mother to go out. After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that time I decided to be Santa’s helper forever. It was on that night that I realised the truth that one who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.
