Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low - income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo's students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores." The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks," she says." They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful." Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts ' classes , at two middle schools and two high schools , include hands - on experiments such as soil testing , flower - and - seed dissection , tastings of fresh or dried produce , and work in the garden . Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes." We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they're eating differently," Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program's benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo's special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues." They get outside," she says," and they feel successful."

When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow, London on a gray January morning. Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me. Without my beloved beaches and endless blue - sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place. Until I made a discovery.
Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing. I loved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don't worry about it. Once , when trying a certain trick on the beam (横杆), I fell onto the stones , damaging a nerve in my hand , and Toby came over , helping me up : Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting:" Safe! Safe! Safe!" And that's what mattered - landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming. Within a couple of years, I'd given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there. I've traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear; tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters. Weaving (穿梭) among the kids who rushed by on their boards , I found my way to the beam . Then a rail - thin teenager, in a baggy white T - shirt, skidded (#) up to the beam. He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him. But soon I caught a few of his glances." I was a local here 20 years ago," I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head." Safe,man.Safe."
"Yeah," I said." Safe."

The Panamanian government announced that the Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, would be listed as a national holiday in Panama starting from 2022. "The decision will boost the country's tourism economy, meanwhile acknowledging the contributions of Chinese-Panamanians to the country's ethnic diversity and multiculturalism," noted Ivan Eskildsen, the former Minister of Panama's National Tourism.
"The country is working together with the Chinese Embassy in Panama to plan 2022 Spring Festival celebrations, which are expected to generate over $100 million in economic output," Eskildsen said. In addition, "by holding nationwide events, the Chinese in Latin America can gather in Panama and celebrate the traditional Chinese festival," said Carlos Aguilar, Panama's former Minister of Culture.
Some Chinese netizens have questioned whether the decision was motivated by "genuine concern for the Chinese living and working in the country" or merely an attempt to boost the country's economy. But many others looked on the brighter side, saying they believed that a "national celebration will cheer up the Chinese living in Panama, even if it is just an attempt to boost international tourism." "I hope it can enhance a sense of belonging among local Chinese towards the traditional culture during the Spring Festival and attract Chinese from some neighbouring countries to participate," posted one netizen.
There has been a history of more than 100 years of the Chinese living in this Central American nation, where the arrival of the Chinese in Panama can be traced back to the mid-19th century. On June 13, 2017, China and Panama established diplomatic (外交的) relations. Since then bilateral relations have developed rapidly. When it comes to the news that the Panamanian government prepared to celebrate the Chinese New Year in 2022 as an official national holiday, Chinese citizens have applauded the country's plan.
32. What does Eskildsen think of the announcement of the government?
A. It speeds the rapid development of the bilateral relations.
B. It has increased over $100 million in economic output.
C. It contributes to the country's ethnic diversity and multiculturalism.
D. It helps the Chinese in Latin America gather in Panama and celebrate the traditional Chinese festival.
33. Which is not the reason why the government announced the Spring Festival as a national holiday in Panama?
A. To boost international tourism.
B. To develop Panama's tourism economy.
C. To provide the convenience for Chinese in Panama.
D. To establish the relations between China and Panama.
34. What is the attitude of many Chinese netizens towards the decision of the Panamanian government?
A. Opposed. B. Cautious. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.

[2025年高考综合改革适应性演练(八省联考)] I was in Philadelphia for a conference when I saw an ad in the hotel. A nearby theater was showing a documentary (纪录片) about several local animal shelters that were helping to save abandoned dogs across the country. I love animals, and I felt an urge to go to this fund-raising event. However, none of my co-workers would go with me, and I was worried about walking on the street alone at night.
I resigned myself to spending the evening in my hotel room, but as soon as I got back to my room I felt restless and bored. The theater where the event was taking place was only about five blocks from the hotel, and the area around the hotel didn’t seem particularly dangerous. So, I decided to brave it. I gathered up my wallet and room key and set off.
It was already getting dark and the streets were nearly deserted. I managed to find the street the theater was on, but when I turned the corner, I stopped in shock. In front of the theater were a group of bikers—very big, tough-looking bikers.
I’ve known lots of motorcycle enthusiasts and most are nice people. However, in this case, I was a woman all alone, in a strange neighborhood, at night, and there were twenty or so very large men—all wearing insignia (徽章) that indicated they were in some sort of club—standing before me. Warning bells began to sound in my head, and my heart was pounding. Was I at the right theater? Had I misread the date of the event?
A sign outside the theater told me that I was in the right place on the right evening. Nevertheless, I wondered if I should rush back to my hotel instead of walking through that crowd of bikers. I finally decided that I would be safer inside the theater. Hopefully, the bikers would have gone away by the time the film was over.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside.

Hello Li Ming!
Improving English writing abilities can indeed be full of struggles. I can empathise with your situation as I also faced similar challenges. However, I found that continuous practice can lead to great improvement. What I strongly recommend is to read a lot of well-written English articles and try to imitate their writing styles. I also kept a daily journal in English, through which I gain confidence and gradually improve my English writing skills.
In spite of the progress made in my writing, my English reading skills are a challenge. I find it difficult to grasp the complete meaning of sentences. I’d be grateful if you could share any useful strategies or resources for dealing with this issue. I look forward to hearing from you.
第2节 参考范文(读后续写)
I hurried into the theater, only to find there were even more bikers inside. My heart sank, and I felt my hands trembling as I searched for a seat in the dim light. To my surprise, several of them smiled and gestured to an empty spot beside them. One even moved over to make more room for me. I sat down nervously, still keeping my bag close to my chest, unsure of what to expect.
After the film began, I realized that the bikers were an animal rescue group. The documentary showed how they often risked their own safety to rescue abandoned and abused dogs, and many of them were featured in the footage. I felt a wave of guilt for my earlier fear. After the show, they were the first to line up to donate to the shelters. On my way back to the hotel, a few of them even offered to walk with me to make sure I was safe. That night, I learned never to judge a book by its cover, and that kindness can come in the most unexpected forms.
