Unit 8 Section B Writing 全英文上课逐字稿(完整版)
(Step 1: Warming-up 课堂导入)
Teacher (T): Good morning, everyone! Before we start today’s class, let’s look at the title of our unit first. It’s called “Making a Difference”. Can anyone tell me what “making a difference” means in simple words?
(Pause for students’ answers)
T: Exactly! It means doing something good to change someone’s life for the better. And today, we’re going to talk about one way we can make a difference—helping others as volunteers.
First, let’s warm up! Let’s watch a short video together. As you watch, please pay attention to the new word we’ll see in the video: backbone.
(Play the video)
T: Okay, the video is over. Who can tell me what “backbone” means here? Yes, it means “core strength” or “main part”. Young people like us are the backbone of volunteer work!
Now, look at this question on the screen: If there’s a chance to help international students in our school as a volunteer, would you take it?
Raise your hand if you would like to try.
(Wait for students’ responses)
T: Wow, so many of you want to be volunteers! That’s awesome. Today, we’ll learn how to write an email to apply for this volunteer position. Let’s move on to the next part.
(Step 2: Pre-reading 读前活动)
T: Now, look at the volunteer recruitment advertisement on your screen. First, let’s answer some questions together.
What kind of text is it?
(Call on a student to answer)
T: Perfect! It’s a volunteer recruitment advertisement for student volunteers.
Who may be interested in it?
(Call on another student)
T: Great answer! Students who want to be volunteers and help international students will be interested in it.
Next, let’s look at the structure of this advertisement. Let’s break it down into three parts: the headline, the beginning, the body, and the ending.
The headline is “STUDENT VOLUNTEERS WANTED”. It tells us the purpose of the ad right away.
The beginning is: “Do you want to make a difference in someone’s life? Join us to be a friend to our international students!” It attracts readers’ attention and introduces the activity.
The body has two parts: “Your tasks as a volunteer” and “We hope…”. It tells us what volunteers will do and what qualities they need.
The ending tells us how to apply: “To volunteer with us, just drop us an email!”
Now, let’s match the parts of the ad with the information they include. Look at the options on the left:
A. what qualities and skills volunteers need to have
B. what the volunteering programme is about
C. how to sign up as a volunteer
D. what duties volunteers will carry out
(Point to each part of the ad and ask students to match)
T: Yes! The headline and beginning talk about what the programme is about (B). The “Your tasks” part tells us the duties volunteers will carry out (D). The “We hope…” part lists the qualities needed (A). And the ending tells us how to apply (C).
Now, let’s extract the key information from the ad together.
First question: What will volunteers do?
(Ask students to list the answers)
T: That’s right! They will:
Take students on a tour of the hometown
Teach them useful Chinese expressions for daily use
Introduce Chinese culture to them
Second question: What qualities are needed?
(Call on students to answer)
T: Perfect! Volunteers need to:
Be willing to help others
Be familiar with the arts like Chinese dance, calligraphy, music
Speak good English
Be good at expressing themselves
Third question: How can you apply?
(Ask students to answer)
T: Exactly! You just need to send an email to the school.
(Step 3: Writing Preparation 写作准备)
T: Now, imagine that you are planning to be a student volunteer. Let’s make notes first. Look at the questions on the screen—they will help you organize your ideas for the email.
Let’s go through each part together:
1. Beginning
Question: What would you like to be / do?
This is where you introduce your purpose. For example: “I want to be a volunteer to help international students.”
2. Body
These three questions will form the main part of your email:
Why do you want to be a volunteer?
Think about your reasons. For example: “I want to make a difference in others’ lives, and I enjoy meeting new people from different cultures.”
What skills or talents do you have?
Think about your abilities. For example: “I speak good English, and I know a lot about Chinese calligraphy. I can also teach them how to make Chinese paper-cutting.”
What experience do you have as a volunteer?
If you have any volunteer experience, you can share it. For example: “Last year, I volunteered at the city library to help kids read books. I learned how to communicate well with others there.”
3. Ending
When can you start volunteering?
Tell them your available time. For example: “I can start volunteering next week, after my mid-term exams.”
What other thoughts do you have about volunteering?
You can add something about your plans or hopes. For example: “I hope to help the international students feel at home here, and learn more about their cultures too.”
Take 3 minutes to write down your notes. You can use the answers we just talked about as examples.
(Give students time to take notes)
(Step 4: Writing Guidance 写作指导)
T: Okay, time’s up! Now, let’s talk about how to write the email properly. First, let’s look at the writing guidance on the screen:
Topic: Volunteer recommendation letter (application email)
Genre: Practical writing (application email)
Person and tense: Use the first person (I, my). Use the simple present tense when talking about your abilities and reasons. You can use the simple past tense when talking about your past volunteer experience.
The most important thing to remember is: your email should be polite and concise, and show the school that you are the right person for this volunteer job.
Now, let’s analyze the structure of an application email together. An application email usually has 5 parts:
Subject: A clear title for your email, like “Application for Student Volunteer”.
Greeting: Polite opening words, such as “Dear Sir or Madam,”.
Introduction: Introduce yourself and state the reason you are writing the email.
Body: Talk about your advantages, skills, talents, and volunteer experience.
Closing: Express your hope for the reply and sign off politely.
Let’s use the mind map to write the first draft step by step.
First, the Introduction part. You can start with these useful expressions:
“I’m writing to apply for…”
“I want to be a volunteer, so I am writing this letter to introduce myself and apply for the position.”
“My name is… I am very interested in being a volunteer and I hope I can get this chance.”
For example, you can write: “My name is Li Hua. I am writing to recommend myself as a volunteer to help international students.”
Next, the Body part. You need to talk about your skills, experience, and why you want to be a volunteer. Here are some useful expressions you can use:
“I’m willing to help others.”
“I’m good at speaking English, so I can communicate with international students easily.”
“I’m familiar with Chinese culture, so I can introduce it to them.”
“I have volunteered at the community center for six months, so I know how to work with people.”
Let’s look at some example sentences together:
“I want to be a volunteer because I like helping others and I hope to make more friends.”
“First, I speak good English, so I can communicate with others easily. Second, I am outgoing and patient, so I can get along well with people. Besides, I like helping others and I am always ready to give a hand.”
Then, the Closing part. You need to tell them when you can start volunteering and express your hope to hear from them. Useful expressions include:
“I can work on weekends and after school.”
“I promise I will work hard and be a good volunteer.”
“I am looking forward to hearing from you soon!”
“Thank you for your consideration.”
Let’s look at the sample email together to see how all these parts fit:
(Show the sample email on the screen)
T: Let’s read the sample email aloud together.
(Read the sample with students)
T: Great! Now you can see how the subject, greeting, introduction, body, and closing work together. The writer introduces himself, talks about his reasons, skills, and experience, and ends with a polite closing. Notice that he gives specific examples, like playing the guzheng for five years, to show he is familiar with Chinese culture. That makes the email more persuasive!
Now, you have 10 minutes to write your email. Use your notes from Step 3 and the expressions we just learned. I’ll walk around to help you if you have any questions.
(Students start writing; teacher provides help)
(Step 5: Homework & Closing 课堂收尾)
T: Okay, time’s up! I see most of you have finished your emails. Let’s review what we learned today: we analyzed the volunteer advertisement, organized our ideas with the 3b questions, learned the structure and useful expressions of an application email, and wrote our first draft.
Before we end, let’s look at your homework for today:
Basic homework: Finish your application email based on your 3b notes, about 60 words long.
Advanced homework: Choose a different volunteer job (like working at an animal shelter, old people’s home, or environmental group) and write an 80-word application email.
Extension homework: Choose a real volunteer organization (like Red Cross or WWF) and write a short 100-word report about it.
Next class, we’ll share some of your emails, correct mistakes together, and learn how to make our writing even better.
Class is over. See you next time!
