My cousin Mariana came to visit my family last month. We spent our days playing happily together and I really couldn’t wait to introduce her to my friends.
“Great news!” I told her one day. “My friend Shawn is having a pool party this Saturday. You can come with me! We’ll have a lot of fun.”
“That’s a really nice invitation,” said Mariana. “but I’m sorry I can’t go. I didn’t bring my swimsuit.”
“That’s not a problem at all!” I said, I showed her all my swimsuits. Mariana said these looked too small for her. But after she tried one on, it fit perfectly.
On Friday night, she seemed more nervous and made another excuse. “I’m really sorry I can’t come to that pool party. I forgot to bring my sunscreen (防晒霜), and I use it for my special skin (皮肤).”
“That’s so lucky!” said my mom. “I happened to have the same brand.”
“Oh... that’s great.” Mariana said in a low voice.
That’s when I knew for sure something was wrong.
After dinner, I talked to her. “Can you tell me the truth?”
Mariana said hesitantly (犹豫地). “OK. It’s hard to say. I’m afraid of swimming pools. I get scared when my feet can’t feel the bottom.”
“I understand.” I said patiently. “No one will care about it. It’s normal to have fears for everyone. But we shouldn’t always make excuses and run away from it. We have to be brave and face them. Actually we can just enjoy the food and play games in the party together.”
Mariana bravely agreed to give it a try. The next day, the weather turned out to be foggy and cool. Most people didn’t even go into the pool. Mariana had a wonderful time with everyone, and she said the cherry pie Shawn’s grandma made was the most delicious thing that she’d tasted in her life.

Have you ever looked up at the stars? Do you want to know more about them? A big telescope (望远镜) in China may help you explore them well. It is called the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (500米口径球面射电望远镜), or FAST for short. Because it is so large and powerful, people often call it China’s “Sky Eye”.
Dr. Jiang Peng has always loved watching the stars. After graduating, he made an important decision to join the FAST project. He now serves as its head engineer. When Jiang first learned about it, he was amazed by its huge size and difficult challenges. “I have always been interested in space and other planets since I was little, and I love solving difficult problems.” Jiang said. He believes that building big dreams requires both passion (热情) and hard work.
Jiang and his team had to connect thousands of steel cables (电缆) perfectly. “No one had done this task before. There wasn’t even a precedent of failure to learn from and every step felt like walking on thin ice.” said Jiang. But he never gave up, all driven by his passion for exploration. He worked with his team for years, and in 2016, FAST was finally completed.
Dr. Jiang hopes that more young people can study astronomy (天文学) in school. He thinks learning about space will help students understand science better. For example, the way stars shine for billions of years teaches us about balance in nature. He suggests adding astronomy to geography classes and calls it “Earth and Astronomical Sciences”. He also wants experts to help write clear and interesting textbooks for students. Now, it’s time for the next generation to carry forward this love for the stars.
26. According to paragraph 1, what information can we get?
A. We are all interested in stars. B. FAST is so big and powerful.

A. needed a job after graduating. B. was asked by his team to join.
C. enjoyed difficult challenges. D. wanted to be a famous scientist.
28. What’s the meaning of underline word “precedent” in paragraph 3?
A. Theme. B. Example. C. Connection. D. Difficulty.
29. What can we infer from Jiang Peng’s suggestion about school classes?
A. He finds the school science education is enough for all the students.
B. He thinks geography is more important than astronomy in school.
C. He hopes to make science learning more enjoyable by adding fun activities.
D. He believes learning about space can make science interesting for students.
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Dream Built with Love B. A Task Filled with Difficulty
C. An Expert in astronomy D. A Tool for Exploring the Universe

第一节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。
Mooncakes are a traditional Chinese food, which means reunion and happiness in Chinese culture.
Today, besides the classic five-nut mooncakes, many new kinds with special fillings have appeared. For example, Shanxi offers the “vinegar mooncakes (醋月饼)”, inspired by its long history of vinegar-making. Zhejiang is known for its hollow osmanthus (空心桂花) mooncakes, which are sweet inside and a little hard outside. Shandong introduces the salty mooncakes with local beans and meat. They not only are interesting but also reflect different cultures across China.
However, such creative changes do not come by accident since they have been deeply rooted (扎根) in local foods, tastes and historical traditions. There is an old saying: “You are what you eat”. Food is not just about eating. It is a way to express our culture and remember our past. Although the taste of mooncakes keeps changing, the tradition of sharing them with family and friends remains the same. New mooncakes don’t replace the old ones; instead, they make the tradition more lively and interesting.
In fact, many old Chinese things are becoming cool and popular again. Traditional clothes are now worn on streets. Old arts like clay art and silk are used to create new looks for bags and toys. These changes show that when our history meets new ideas, wonderful things happen, making our culture lively for everyone.
All these changes, big and small, help to bring new ideas into our culture. They show that our traditions are not frozen in time. Instead, they are like a tree that grows new leaves each year. By keeping our traditions and making new changes, our culture becomes richer and more alive, passing down warmly from generation to generation.

Hello, everyone! I’d like to share a story about kindness.
