Filmmaking usually brings to mind a video camera, sound equipment and a sky-high budget. But what if you could make a movie with just the device in your pocket? Filmmakers are reimagining what it takes to make a movie and inspiring those with little more than a smartphone.
The London International Smartphone Film Festival, known as SMART, was launched in 2021 to celebrate the creativity and diversity of smartphone films. “Anyone can now make an amazing film,” British producer Adam Gee, who set up the festival with director Victoria Mapplebeck, told the BBC. “All you need is the vision and the talent. It is no longer a question of being able to afford the right equipment or securing a big distribution deal.”
In 2019, Gee and Mapplebeck won a BAFTA award, beating the bigger budgeted competition with their short film, Missed Call. Since then, a demand for more diverse films has resulted in a boom in smartphone filmmaking. “We set up the festival around smartphone films because it enables greater access and diversity, as well as innovation (创新),” Gee said. “Our competition categories cover all types, both scripted and unscripted. And there are no suggestions now about quality.”
However, filming with a smartphone does not only belong to the world of independent cinema. High-profile American director Steven Soderbergh experimented with the form in his first iPhone-shot movie from 2018, Unsane. A-list actors such as Sir Ian McKellen and Kristen Stewart have also starred in films shot with phones.
The future seems bright for filmmaking with digital devices. Its ease of use and accessibility will surely draw in more aspiring filmmakers. Soderbergh is reportedly such a fan of filming on digital cameras. When asked if he’d return to film, he said it would be like “writing scripts in pencil”.

History, culture are pointers to the future: Apple CEO
"Our history and culture is very important to understanding the present moment and where we're heading in the future,"said Apple CEO Tim Cook on Monday.
"What technology does and what our products do is help expand the audience (for traditional culture),"Cook said shortly after watching a classic excerpt from 400-year-old Kunqu Opera play, Peony Pavilion 牡丹亭, which was performed by the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre in Beijing.During the event, model-actress and director Chang Chunxiao introduced her ongoing short documentary shot on iPhone, The People in the Time Tunnel, which features behind-the-scenes stories about the Beijing theater's new interpretation of Peony Pavilion.
"Only a few of us could fit in the theater and enjoy it, but with the video we're able to capture that for the world. It enables us to connect with our history in a much deeper way and with many more people,"Cook told China Daily.
"I love Chinese calligraphy. I think it's one of the most beautiful art forms in the world, and preserving that is so important."
Cook said he sees the importance of protecting the history and culture in a country with 5,000 years of history, and "there's so much in the past that can be learned from and used to make our lives better in the present moment".
Speaking of the current trend of AI (artificial intelligence), Cook said technology, at its best, is for enriching people's lives, and for making people not only more productive but more creative as well.
"But it does not and it should not replace human beings. It's a complement rather than a replacement,"Cook said.
28.According to Tim Cook, why are history and culture important?
A. They symbolize outdated traditions.
B. They help understand the present and guide the future.
C. They are only relevant to artistic fields.
D. They have no connection to technological innovation.
29.What role does technology play in protecting traditional culture, as mentioned by Cook?
A. Replacing traditional art forms.
B. Expanding the audience for traditional culture.
C. Reducing the artistic value of traditions.
D. Limiting cultural exposure to local areas.
30.What is the focus of Chang Chunxiao’s documentary The People in the Time Tunnel ?
A. Apple’s product launch events.
B. The history of Chinese calligraphy.
C. Case studies of AI applications.
D. Behind-the-scenes stories of the new Peony Pavilion.
31.What do the words "complement" in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. A substitute B. A barrier C. A perfect addition D. A copy

Urban areas have long been considered lacking in biodiversity, especially by Americans, who believe that nature can flourish (繁荣) only where cities do not exist. This is called “the biological deserts fallacy” by the authors of a new paper in Bioscience, who make the case that cities contribute more than we think to regional biodiversity.
A 2017 analysis of 529 bird species showed that 66 were found only in urban areas. Some species, such as peregrine falcons, have higher survival rates or greater reproductive success in cities than in rural areas. In Australia, researchers identified 39 rare “last chance” species that survive only in urban habitats.
Cities do this by offering diverse and unconventional habitats that support species. These include traditional urban green spaces like parks and backyards, as well as golf courses, urban farms and community gardens. In addition, green facilities, such as green roofs and constructed wetlands, also attract wildlife.
The positive roles cities play in supporting biodiversity can be strengthened through intentional design. For example, cities can be planned to provide shelter from pressures such as competition. Designing green roofs and setting up nesting boxes can increase prey (猎物) availability for urban raptors (猛禽) such as Cooper’s hawks, peregrine falcons, and Mississippi kites. Cities can also design some stopover sites for travelling birds to rest and refuel. Large city parks, such as Highbanks Metro Park in Columbus, Ohio, serve as critical stopover habitats for thrushes, warblers and other travelling songbirds.
But urban conservation biology is still in its early stages, and much remains to be learned. “We often assume that wildlife will behave the same in urban habitats as it does in rural ones,” said Seth Magle, a biological expert. “But that is wrong. You have to throw out the entire playbook. Sometimes I joke that I feel like I’m doing research on an unknown planet.”
32.How does the author challenge “the biological deserts fallacy”?
A.By explaining data.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By citing research results.
D.By defining a new concept.
33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How cities support biodiversity?
B.Why wildlife declines in cities.
C.Types of urban green spaces.
D.Advantages of urban habitats.
34.Why are urban raptors mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To explain planned efforts aid city wildlife.
B.To prove raptors cannot survive in cities.
C.To show raptors’ city hunting methods.
D.To stress competition among urban wildlife.
35.What do Magle’s words imply about urban wildlife research?
A.It has made great progress.
B.It should involve more experts.
C.It is based on safe assumptions.
D.It should move beyond rural patterns.

As someone who’s been saving money for her first trip in the new year, I certainly have my fears and reservations. My brain keeps trying to scare me with worst-case situations and excuses to stay home. But the entire point of traveling is to get yourself out of your comfort zone. 36
Start small.
Many people assume that traveling requires week-long or even month-long trips to resorts or expensive hotels, but true exploration doesn’t have to be costly. Begin with short, manageable trips to build confidence. A nearby overnight stay, a dinner reservation at a local restaurant, a small-town hotel, or a weekend escape to a city you’ve long wanted to visit — all count as meaningful first steps. 37 Once you’re comfortable being alone, gradually extend your travels or travel farther. Starting small prevents overwhelming (压垮) yourself, which could avoid killing the interest in travel entirely.
38
When you plan your first travel trip, make sure you have a light itinerary (行程) to follow. That way, you don’t show up unprepared or overwhelmed by choices. For instance, I’m designing my New England trip as a mini writer’s retreat: visiting specific cafes, exploring charming downtowns, spending time in nature, and writing in my hotel. I have a list of must-try eateries, landmarks, and shops. 39 I just outlined key experiences I’m excited about. A loose plan helps guide you without limiting your choices.
Take the proper safety precaution.
Traveling can be intimidating No matter how long you’ve been traveling, you might still feel scared on your journey. This is completely reasonable, but it doesn’t mean you should avoid travels altogether. Instead, focus on what you can do to stay safe. 40 . Also, stay aware of your surroundings, follow basic safety measures, and trust your intuition. These steps will help you feel secure as you embrace your adventure.
A.I’m not over-scheduling.
B.Plan every detail in advance.
C.Create a plan that inspires and excites you.
D.Here’s how to start a traveling in the new year.
E.For example, you should never travel alone to remote areas.
F.They gradually build your ability to enjoy your own company.
G.For instance, choose a well-researched destination and a trusted place to stay.

“Freaks(异类).” That’s what kids at school whispered about our group as we walked past in the corridors(走廊). I had suggested “Potpourri(混合体)” as our band name, but Taylor shot it down immediately. She was still recovering from a nasty rumor(恶毒的谣言)that had ruined her good name. Otis, with his pale skin and total lack of hair—even eyebrows—was called “Creepy(怪人)”. And me? I was just the girl who couldn’t sing in tune曲调 or keep a beat(跟不上节奏).
We called ourselves The Misfits(不合群者)instead and decided to perform an original song at the school’s year-end talent show. Taylor had a voice made for the spotlight, and Otis was a beast on the drums. My tambourine(铃鼓)was just for show. The night of the show, we stood backstage, shaking. “You okay?” I whispered to Taylor. Her face had turned a strange shade of green. She gave a small nod, but when the curtains opened and the lights hit her, she froze.
Otis started the drum intro(前奏), but when Taylor leaned into the microphone, what came out was a sharp, painful noise. Someone in the audience yelled “freaks,” and laughter spread through the crowd. Taylor stood there, unable to move. I glanced at Otis—his eyes were wide with panic. Neither of us had memorized her song. My legs felt like jelly as I moved closer to Taylor, grabbed the mic, and weakly sang a line from “Jingle Bell Rock.” My thin, flat voice hung in the air. Another roar of laughter broke out.
Just as I wished the curtains would fall and end the nightmare, a loud, rumbling sound rolled through the hall.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
I turned to see Otis, his drumsticks rising and falling like a storm.

根据第一部分中“Due to the large number of visitors during the New Year celebrations and the high demand for accommodations, it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.(由于新年庆祝活动期间游客众多,且住宿需求量大,建议提前查询酒店价格并预订房间)”可知,文章建议参加新年游行的游客提前预订酒店。
根据第二部分中“Children enjoy carousels (旋转木马), Ferris wheels, and other fairground (游乐场) attractions, while adults enjoy the different fairs.(孩子们喜欢旋转木马、摩天轮以及其他游乐场的游乐设施,而成年人则喜欢不同的各类集市活动)”可知,该节日设有多种集市活动。
根据第四部分中“Artists from around the world play side by side with local British musicians, and many free shows are also offered as part of the festival.(来自世界各地的艺术家与当地的英国音乐家一同登台演出,而且该音乐节还提供了许多免费演出活动)”可知,游客可以在该爵士音乐节上观看免费的表演。
24.D 25.A 26.D 27.A
根据第二段中“The London International Smartphone Film Festival, known as SMART, was launched in 2021 to celebrate the creativity and diversity of smartphone films.(伦敦国际智能手机电影节,即SMART,于2021年创办,旨在庆祝智能手机电影的创造力和多样性。)”
根据第三段中“Since then, a demand for more diverse films has resulted in a boom in smartphone filmmaking.(从那以后,对更多样化电影的需求导致了智能手机电影制作的繁荣。)”
根据第四段“However, filming with a smartphone does not only belong to the world of independent cinema. High-profile American director Steven Soderbergh experimented with the form in his first iPhone-shot movie from 2018, Unsane. A-list actors such as Sir Ian McKellen and Kristen Stewart have also starred in films shot with phones.(然而,用智能手机拍摄并不只属于独立电影界。知名美国导演史蒂文·索德伯格在其2018年首部iPhone拍摄的电影《失心病狂》中尝试了这种形式。伊恩·麦克莱恩爵士和克里斯汀·斯图尔特等一线演员也出演过用手机拍摄的电影。)”可知,作者提到索德伯格是为了说明智能手机电影制作已不限于独立电影界,大牌导演和演员也参与其中,以此展示智能手机电影制作的流行程度。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“When asked if he’d return to film, he said it would be like “writing scripts in pencil”.(当被问及是否会回归胶片拍摄时,他说那就像“用铅笔写剧本”。)”

28. B 解析:第一段明确引用库克的话:“Our history and culture is very important to understanding the present moment and where we're heading in the future.”
29. B 解析:第二段库克提到技术的作用是“help expand the audience (for traditional culture)”,对应选项B。
30.D 解析:第三段指出该纪录片“features behind-the-scenes stories about the Beijing theater's new interpretation of Peony Pavilion ”,明确对应选项D。
选项A(替代品)与原文逻辑矛盾,选项B(障碍)、D(复制)不符合语境。
32.C 33.A 34.A 35.D
根据第二段“A 2017 analysis of 529 bird species showed that 66 were found only in urban areas. Some species, such as peregrine falcons, have higher survival rates or greater reproductive success in cities than in rural areas. In Australia, researchers identified 39 rare “last chance” species that survive only in urban habitats.(2017年对529种鸟类的分析显示,有66种只存在于城市区域。有些物种,比如游隼,其在城市中的存活率或繁殖成功率要高于在农村地区的情况。在澳大利亚,研究人员发现了39种极为罕见的“最后机会”物种,它们仅在城市栖息地中生存)”可推知,作者通过引用多项调研、科研结果推翻谬论。
33.主旨大意题。根据第三段“Cities do this by offering diverse and unconventional habitats that support species.(城市通过提供多样且特殊的栖息地来养活各类物种)”可知,本段主要讲述城市是如何维系生物多样性的。
根据第四段“The positive roles cities play in supporting biodiversity can be strengthened through intentional design.(城市在支持生物多样性方面所发挥的积极作用可以通过精心的设计得到进一步加强)”及“Designing green roofs and setting up nesting boxes can increase prey (猎物) availability for urban raptors (猛禽) such as Cooper’s hawks, peregrine falcons, and Mississippi kites.(设计绿色屋顶并设置筑巢箱能够增加城市猛禽(如库珀鹰、游隼和密西西比风鸢)的猎物数量)”可推知,列举猛禽是为举例说明人为规划措施能帮助城市野生动物。
根据最后一段““We often assume that wildlife will behave the same in urban habitats as it does in rural ones,” said Seth Magle, a biological expert. “But that is wrong. You have to throw out the entire playbook. Sometimes I joke that I feel like I’m doing research on an unknown planet.”(“我们通常认为,野生动物在城市栖息地的行为和在农村栖息地的行为是一样的,”生物学专家Seth Magle说。“但这种想法是错误的。我们必须摒弃原有的所有理论框架。有时我会开玩笑说,感觉自己仿佛是在一个未知的星球上进行研究。”)”可推知,城市野生动物研究不能沿用野外研究模式,需要跳出乡村生物研究框架。

Dear Christ,
I’m glad to hear that you’re interested in the cooking classes for Grade 10 students in our school.
Our school offers free cooking classes for all Senior One students. We have four 40-minute classes every term in the school cooking studio. The course is designed to teach us practical living skills instead of complicated cooking techniques.
In class, we mainly learn to cook simple and traditional Chinese home-cooked dishes, such as scrambled eggs and vegetable stir-fries. We also try making traditional pastries like steamed buns and noodles. Besides, our teacher teaches us basic knowledge of healthy and nutritious diets.
The class has benefited me a lot. I have mastered basic cooking skills and can cook simple meals for my family. More importantly, I truly realize the value of labor and develop a healthier eating habit.
I hope you can have a chance to experience Chinese cooking someday.
Yours,
Li Hua

I turned to see Otis, his drumsticks rising and falling like a storm. His pale skin shone under the lights, and the red Santa hat I had given him bounced wildly as he struck the drums with amazing speed. Each beat shook the floor and hit my chest like a second heartbeat. The crowd’s laughter faded away. A powerful rhythm filled every corner of the hall. Taylor looked at him, her frozen face melting into surprise. She stepped back to the mic, and this time, when she sang, her voice was steady and strong. The audience leaned forward, completely drawn in.
When the final beat landed, the room fell silent for a moment. Then an explosion of cheers and clapping burst from every seat. People stood up, whistling and shouting. Someone yelled “Misfits!”—but it sounded like a compliment. Taylor’s eyes filled with tears as she grabbed my hand. Otis gave us a crooked grin from behind his drums. After that night, they still called us freaks—but not in hushed whispers. They said it to our faces, with smiles instead of sneers. We were no longer outcasts. We were a group of brave, talented freaks who had found our rhythm.

W: Has your friend, Emily, reached the restaurant this morning?
M: No. She just called and said her car was hardly moving in a long line of vehicles waiting. She should be here in about 15 minutes.
W: OK. Can you tell me more about her?
M: Sure! Emily began primary school in a small town and attended a famous high school. Then she moved to the city for college education.
W: Which university did she enter?
M: She went to the University of New York at 17. She joined a music club and started performing.
W: So she studied music?
M: Initially, her mother wanted her to study law. But she was passionate about literature, so she pursued that instead.
W: That’s awesome.
M: Look, the girl walking towards us is Emily. She’s waving at us.

M: Linda, how’s retirement treating you?
W: It’s been great. I was always busy teaching in the school before retiring, but now I finally have the time to pursue things I never had the time to do, like singing and dancing.
M: Cool. I’m thinking about hanging up my boots pretty soon, too. I’m really tired of making programs all the time.
W: Wow, Jordan, I didn’t think that was possible. You’ve always been such a workhorse.
M: Yeah, but I’m no spring chicken anymore. Besides, it’ll be nice to finally slow down and enjoy life like writing my favorite novels.
W: That sounds great. Just be prepared for a period of adjustment.
M: Yeah, a lot of people seem kind of lost when they first retire. Work is such a big part of our identities. Old habits die hard.
W: They do. But if you can let those attachments go, you can finally taste the sweet fruit of your hard earned labor.

M: Yeah, it was really interesting. You know I’m a little bit in a hurry, but here’s my card. We should definitely meet up again and continue our discussion.
W: Sure, you still have my contact details, right?
M: You know what, this is really embarrassing, but your name has just slipped my mind. Can you remind me?
W: Sure, my name is Anna Faris. Don’t worry about it. It happens to me all the time. I’m terrible with names too.

M: Thank you for inviting me. I remember I wanted to become a painter in college, so I worked hard to get my degree in Fine Arts. However, when I left college, I started drawing pictures for books. I was no longer producing images from the heart but developing images for money. Then I began to develop a collection of my drawings and started to carry them around with me to show potential clients and employers. Having a wonderful collection of original artwork is the first step, but most potential clients would like to see printed artwork as evidence of quality, and without this “evidence”, they will be hesitant about offering a contract. Well, here are my suggestions for you to prepare your collections of your best artwork. The first way is by submitting your artwork for a competition. Competitions offer you an opportunity to show your artwork. The other approach is to place some of your drawings next to some text to demonstrate how your artwork would look when it is printed. Nevertheless, when you’re going for an interview, it’s important to separate your artwork into different types. That’s all from me. Thank you for listening.
